I used to be one of those drivers who was angry that cyclists were taking up the road. I'd never do anything stupid like pass them too closely, but I definitely didn't understand.
I recently had some spare cash in my health spending account at work, which covered an entry level fixed gear. I started riding on paths and in the streets and I totally get it now. I think everyone would benefit from trying out something they don't understand, you might surprise yourself. Now whenever I'm sitting in traffic behind some terrible driver, I can't help but think "I'd rather be on my bike".
I don't ride brakeless, I don't run reds, but I realize there is a skill level and acceptance of risk associated with both of these things that I just don't have. Thanks for making these, Terry. Sure, you get a bunch of hateful comments on here, but there are plenty more who are watching these and getting inspired to go outside and try something new.
Also, Cooper looks like he makes really good coffee.
THIS so much. Great comment mate, now I'm gonna go ride my bike.
Amazing comment!
It's strange '' oh cyclists taking up the road'' when cars literally gridlock each other up the whole time and have priority to all the space right down the middle of every street. It is indeed a matter of perspective though, quite a few generations were brought up with something of an expectation to learn to drive and run a car, but not really to have riding skills to go with the driving skills. Even made to attempt sports at school but like no ever much emphasis on riding in education. I agree with Cooper I don't think most people who start too young to rely on driving a car the whole time, there just not as '' good'' at reading the road. Just ''Lane, lights, speed limit and next vehicle in front '' mostly, with a bit of '' on your best behavior'' when your taking your test.
@@leifcian4288 I think there's definitely a part of angry drivers that are pissed that they have to sit in bumper to bumper traffic in their expensive cars while someone on an old recycled road bike gets to the same place way quicker than they are.
I think these people are just directing the anger they'd be feeling anyway at whoever happens to be nearby. Anyways, I'd much rather be sharing the road with someone hyper attentive like Cooper than most of the idiots who inexplicably manage to get drivers licences.
Just this morning some completely oblivious driver sped right next to the sidewalk in a huge puddle as they were driving past me. Tons of room to avoid it, but they were just completely unaware of their surroundings.
These are the same people who run someone over and drag them all the way home, then wonder why there's a mangled corpse in their driveway.
@@terminalspines Cutting the speed limit right down in the majority of urban places I think would be mostly better for everyone, I mean It's quite hard for most people to cycle over 20mph for long but get in a vehicle and all of a sudden it seems kind of slow. But then if traffic in busy areas is moving slower it should run a lot smoother and be a lot less stress. so in a lot of instances it wouldn't really impact on commute times too much anyway, and be more time to relax for a driver. But then signalling would need to be completely changed. Probably easier said than implemented tbh.
Also other than just the speed limit there should, really, also be a acceleration limit relative to the next breaking point. If the limit is only 20, still going 0 to 20 in a split second is an abrupt force and noise when throwing thousands of pounds around. Then usually just have to break harder at the next junction which only causes more wear and tear on the components which will cost more time and or money all the sooner. And fuel costs. So yeah if only drivers where more generous with acceleration and deceleration distance it should be a lot easier for everyone if it can help with synchronisation. Unfortunately the wrong precedent with etiquette was set a very long time ago. It kind of looks relatively OK in New York from what I can see in the videos, perhaps because it's a bit easier to anticipate Flow with the long wide avenues.
We need a same video, but with Safa! And yes, this should be a series.
Safas driving style is really in the middle of hate and respect.
@@TheRealAssix i totally agree :)) and i also agree that this should be a series !
YES WITH SAFA
I'm totally agree. Please Terry make a same video with Ana Puga
Palabra! Make it a series Terry.
"and I'm sure Terry can pull it up".. and then Terry DID NOT.
nah... not Terry...
This one? At 3:09 - not even close.
ua-cam.com/video/WyV894c8oqI/v-deo.html
@@bob-ny6kn it's not that. I think it's this at 1:27
@@andreitanase6245 No it's the scene at 4:57
Glad we all agree. :)
I can say that I started riding fixed gear in the city (Milano, italy) because of Terry's videos.
The level of awareness you get by communting everyday among careless drivers can' t be taught.
You truly become a better citizen.
"Yellow means speed up and red means you have a couple of seconds" - Cooper
Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
its a fact!!! observe any major intersection in NYC! haha. the out of state plates are the ones who give it a few too many seconds on red or stop short.. lol
I love watching this guy's videos before jumping on my beach cruiser, riding out into the streets of my sleepy little town and riding slow like I have nowhere to be and all the time in the world to get there. It really is a totally different riding experience.
Riding through heavy traffic and around my city has done 2 things for me:
1. I agree makes me a better more aware driver.
2. Helped me develop a pure hatred for roller bladers.
HAH! add ebikes, eboards, escoots etc to that list pls
I just recently found your channel. I've been watching all your past videos. Love them. I can't wait until you post new ones. I love watching Cooper Ray slice and dice his way through the city streets. Keep them coming. 👏👏
Man! You guys are just crazy!
Love the agility, etc...
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Respect from Romania!
🚲🚴
Damn that whole part about not reacting whenever your toes get Stepped on and visa versa really resonated with me. A lot of the time I stick with all the stuff that happens when it’s so much better to just let it go and flow with it. Thanks guys!
Cooper can record the hotline of Terry🚴🏻🚴🏻
MAKE IT HAPPEN PLEASE
I've been telling him that for a while now 👀
This needs to happen!
Shit yer.
8:36 I get filtering and running red lights (unless other road users have to hit the brakes and risk a collision because you come shooting through), I also try to ride fast and efficient, looking ahead. But if pedestrians on pedestrian crossings have to jump out of the way and be scared it's just unnecessary and wrong. Pedestrian crossings are for pedestrians to cross the road. They have the right of way and making a video doesn't give you any special rights.
The other thing is holding on to cars. While you're holding on to a car, a swerve to avoid an obstacle or a sudden sharp turn can throw you off the bike. Just imagine the shit day the driver is going to have if you die because you were holding on to their door handle. Completely avoidable.
That guy saying people hate cyclists because of fine folks like Cooper 😂😂 my guy... people hate cyclists riding in the bike lane. There's nothing we can do about it
Sad people, most of them would get it once they get on a fixed gear and ride through the city.
Hotline - Cooper Ray, the video that got me into the cycling courrier job, now I'm living on the edge in the streets, just like Cooper, a new kind of modern hero
Amazing! 🙏🏾 Ride safe!
Cooper Ray reminds me of my younger self. Not the riding skills (I wish), but the attitude that "I'm skilled enough not to hit you, so you don't have to worry. I'm not putting you in actual danger, so don't freak out." The problem is that other people can't read your mind. They can't be sure that you are not going to hit you, so they do have a moment of panic, which could go on to impact them and the people in their lives for the rest of the day.
Since I've gained this perspective with age, I'd be curious to see if Cooper Ray's perspective changes in about 20 years and/or if he has children.
These sit downs with the hotline GOATs need to be a thing. I was enthralled from beginning to end.
Cooper, your riding along with Terry's filming is pure, blissful art. Keep'em coming, guys!
“When it has to happen, you make it happen...” Absolutely, like most things in life we create our reality, hopefully most people eventually get it. Ride on bro!
Lol! Totally through me off at about 8:25 to hear my name! My comment was referencing the dude in the background that was stoked by that juke. It was pretty rad to watch that scene again, too.
Loved the quote at 4:17
"you give cyclists a bad name"
found the fred roadie with platform pedals on his s-works venge
So much YES!
I run mtb pedals on my full carbon roadie and I wear baggy t shirts instead of lycra. sue me
Very articulate and expressive chat as I'd expect from Cooper. Really enjoyed it.. yes, and the exemplary filming, Terry. Oh and the plants.
You're the reason I removed my bell and became more vocal when I ride. I now interact more with the environment around me and acknowledge those that do the same be it cyclist, motorist or pedestrian.
Yeeea guys! You'd be more than welcome in Buenos Aires, hands down! Just let us know in advance. And Terry, your filming is really appreciated here!
yessssssss
Again this dynamic duo Cooper - Terry works so well. All the riders in the hotline série have something that make them special. But, there is something else with Cooper, this guy is just more beautiful to watch than the others when he rides... he got so much flow, that you can almost forget he’s riding a bike in a street, he could be on a board on the ocean or on the snow... I mean his way to ride is just hypnotizing.... mad props from Paris France. You guys are inspiration for a bunch of people around the world...
More Terry and Cooper excellence! I agree that this would be a good series. The Hotline series helped me find my passion for fixed gear riding @ 45 yrs old. Blessings
Same here. I haven't been riding fixed gear over 12 years until recently. i'm 37. Once again i enjoy the fluidity of the pedal motion. terry's videos, among other things, made me wanna try it again and was suprised i still could skip stop and not get thrown out the saddle in a attempt to freewheel on the first day ;)
What a cozy and relaxing looking apartment. I dig it!
It really is!
Of course, Terry, this has to be a series. I have the title for the next one: Internet vs Safa Brian ;) ¡Abrazo desde Perú!
Discovering Terry's video in 2023...astonishing fitness, skill and grace and to top it off a surprisingly down to earth personality...thank you!
At least 20 of these 1mio views was me... thanks for your channel. And yes, let's make it a series.
Same!
Funny how your first name is Cooper, which as you know are barrel makers, and in the UK, the verb "to barrel" is slang meaning to go fast ;) Your nickname is now Cooper "the Barrel" Ray
9:00 Thing with skidding is that it drastically changes behavior, depending on the surface, temperature, humidity, liquid water, tires.
It's natural to adjust to these changes. A rider/driver that did not predict the impact of these changes, or doesn't have the necessary space to adjust for them, is prone for a uncontrollable environment and an accident, especially if there are more "skidders" behind him
One man can be faster at a race track, than the others, but he's pushing the limits much more, and leaves a small room for mistakes, if he's trying to achieve the maximum performance, whilst overtaking slower drivers, resulting in an unsafer and less stable environment. There's no issue if others are anticipating it, and are able to react in a way that's safe, but if they don't, then their mistake, will add to yours, and can result in a collision.
Public traffic's goal is for everyone to be equally fast, and to make the environment predictable. I can't blame the dude, because the traffic in most, and especially this city, is horribly slow, and waiting on everyone is not an option, and driving at the tempo of other cyclists is probably 3 times slower than he's riding.
Just imagine analogy to this in car world, if in traffic jams cars were to leave more distance between them, and BMW's would race through to gaps to get to their destination 5 minutes faster, it's insane. 🤣
Such a good point about riding safer on a track bike! Any time I'm out with gears and brakes I find myself going full speed everywhere and not paying nearly enough attention.
Cooper’s crib is damn dope. Terry’s crib next please!
chill creepy ass damn
Track ID 0:05 anyone? Thanks.
Want to know too!!

Super cool.. I hope to see you both in Bali someday.. Big Love
Dude, I thought your cycling skills were excellent.. and then you made the pour over 0_0
Godlike. Honestly tho, Cooper is a big influence lets be real
The collaboration of Cooper and Terry is very fruitful. You should consider of working together more often. The NYC bike tour has set a new level and should be extended. (Yo! - Out of the way)
This guy should run for president next year well spoken well mannered and an all round awesome guy and a great cyclist
just a fucking asshole who puts others in danger
This rules. Brilliant idea Terry! Thanks for the insight Cooper
THIS is how you address the trolls! Fantastic follow up video, definitely on board for more of these!
Lol what exactly is he adressing.
"i have a lot of respect for people"... Screaming to scare pedestrians and move past them faster.
Awesome! You guys should come to chill in Bali someday.. 😊🌴🌺🍺
Great video cooper, when I saw the ride video I was blown away by your awareness of your surroundings, forget the haters and let's see another tour video that was just fantastic. Big up from Scotland.ride on mate.
many thanks! where do you want to see another tour? its overdue :)
What is the track at the beginning?
Great video... This should be a series indeed.16:00 Have to slightly disagree with the Amsterdam part though... Let's just say it's very different here. Would be amazing if you guys make your way here one day. Hopefully I will be at monstertrack next year. Peace!
What's the song at the very beginning?
When he said you can stand on the downtube no hands, but that's to appease people it's not riding. That spoke to me. I don't bother learning wheelies or riding backwards, I just want to move forward and around the traffic and flow through the city and work out the body
Just to paint who Cooper is - I messaged him about Jazz music and he took the time to write a giant list of artists I should check out - he doesn’t even know me. Great dude - simple life, positive.
What song background name ?
Thank you.
From Russia. :)
da, eto blestyashe!
14:51 we are the one's giving cyclists a bad name this is exactly why it is important to film our rides. I scare the hell out of pedestrians that are busy on their phones not paying attention, it seems like I'm at fault for being fast but in fact they are not paying attention in traffic. This behaviour of walking around like an idiot seems to be socially acceptable, riding your bike with true skill is seen as dangerous and scares people making it socially unacceptable. Getting more people on bikes and being good at driving is going to be key into making this socially acceptable.
I love your channel! Always motivating me to go out and ride. Thank you Terry. Thank all you guys. Greetings from Brazil.
Hello! I was one who said "that's not bike spirit"... after this... I get your point, and I have to say: I agree with you. Excellent video, guys!!!
Love your style man. Keep being you.
Keep doin what u do!...amazing work and skill...👍
Keep doin what you doin boyss, amazing stuff! Big upss from Cork City Ireland Yoo!
7:50 I think there are some researches which came to the conclusion that riders (be it bicycle or motorbike) are generally better drivers in general. I have ridden bicycles a lot several years ago, especially in the city and now I ride a motorbike pretty much everywhere. I too think that it has made me a better driver. I just see the unexpected before it happens sometimes. I am more aware of possible dangers and pay attention to them even if they won't happen.
yes!! it forces you to expect the unexpected :)
@@CooperRay yea. Although just a few hours ago I had a near miss. A pedestrian ran across a red light while I was in the bus lane (legally) and had green light. He ran from between cars so the view was blocked both for him and me. I should have anticipated it better.
I honked, braked, he stopped so I did not hit him. Just barely. He apologised so all is good but damn, was a close call.
I should have seen it coming, kind of obvious, he wanted to get to the bus before it left and the cars were stopped due to traffic jam.
Thanks for the videos Terry. Pure entertainment and huge influence. Greets from Germany
well spoken . great ambassadors for the community 👍
Great work guys You're an Inspiration
Name of track at the beginning pleeeease
We need a same video, but with Erik Otto, his riding style 11:12 to Cooper Ray

@@YasminZeed God bless you
6:30 - I think we need to hear more about looking ahead, predictions and predictability of people around you. It's difficult to grasp even though I 100% agree. Without trying, most people will never know, though it is the #1 thing to learn from riding.
I'd love to argue with you on that but I do believe that this is what makes it relatively safe to drive full speed on the Autobahn in Germany while going 80 on the Highway is relatively unsafe.
TERRY AND COOPER BACK AT IT AGAIN WIT THAT GOOD SHEIT
Hats off to u guys...
2 genuinely good dudes...
I'm in total agreement with everything u said...
Hello from Serbia/Belgrade...
I'm doing the same kind of rides here for fun 20 years now (now I'm 35yo) never got ticketed, like u said if u're not in the way of someone u're golden...
I remember when this clip was uploaded, shared it to a lot of friends and everyone was like: Master Jedi level... ;)
awesome! many thanks :) keep riding safe
Did something kind of dickish where I cut close to a group of pedestrians today... needed this video. Thanks Terry & Cooper
Bro that thing he talked about everyone stepping in everyone’s feet and not reacting is really so true you would go insane here if u reacted every single time
You fellas are awesome
Thanks for sharing these rides!
I'm a mountain biker from South Africa. I had no idea this kind of cycling existed and it's incredible to watch, I'm super stoked to try it myself,(only working up the courage). Keep an eye out for South African Hotlines in the near future
Thanks for the stoke🔥🔥🔥
This was necessary, I can't agree more with Cooper, I'm from Bogotá, Colombia and it's pretty much the same, and I've read a lot articles about it, the more you push a boundary the more you master any ability. Mediocrity is worse.
indeed!! Saludos. Quiero viajar bogota para CMWC 2020 :)
This guy is my inspiration to ride my bike. Great video Terry. Please come to Buenos Aires PLEASE!
what is the background music?
Thanks Terry for bringing this to us
I have seen 1 minute of the video and I already can tell I'm going to like it, so I hit the like button.
Dude you rock ! Your videos are what keep me riding fixed gear ! Ride hard or go home !!!! Keep up the great work you do !!!! 🚲😍👍
Uh... ''Ride how you normally would''
4:30 cool to hear the way you talk about new york and camaraderie, ppl get it or they dont
what have been your scariest moments?
for sure Terry doesnt get enough credit for following and focusing guys like Cooper, Safa, and anyone lol; is like you are amazed on them going through those little holes and jumping/turning, and during all that, Terry is recording them hahahaha
More historical tours, more ride; more more more ! from France
Cooper Ray is one gnarly human being.. Congrats on a mil
Very reflecting Views and respectfull way u do what u do. Like this kind of cycling Philosophy.
Respect to you Cooper for doing this video!
Should should definitely make this a series.
wish i could like twice, at first i wasnt too interested because its not riding, but I just kept watching and now its over!!
Nice Mindset, nice ride. Respect from France keep the good vibe !
I think all those 'little tickets' might be evidence if you're ever the cause of a major accident. You may get charged, for something quite bad.
That said. Appreciate the video overall :) Cool bro
largely quota tickets that everyone from school teachers to bankers to bike messengers receive on two wheels here tbh
Cooper style.
Terry style.
Make me relax
Perfect video! Cooper Ray addresses many points a cyclist puts forward to the haters. I myself ride fixed, not brakeless, do run reds (only when I wont get hurt or hurt others). There is a freedom about cycling and as Cooper says, there is a heightened awareness about good cyclists.
I drive large vehicles in London and the cyclists that get hurt or cause incidents are the Adam's and Jane's that just ride because & have no awareness. And again like Mr. Ray says. Just be aware of your city surroundings.
Great video Terry and Cooper.
big vehicles require the most respect from a cyclists view! in my experience, bus drivers, trucks, etc are the most skilled drivers, and the best at keeping their cool. Eye contact is most important. i did not mention this in the video as i was addressing commentary - but this cannot be stressed enough! cheers
video riding behind terry riding behind someone would be cool! this is very cool too thanks terry and cooper ray you all are rad af! more hotlines this summer dude?
Saludos desde argentina!!!!! Sos un gran maestro!!!!!!!!!
Terry, next time, please tell Ray to rinse the paper filter and discard the remaining water from the chemex before adding the coffee grounds. He'll get rid of the paper taste. Thanks
He did that i cut it out of the edit :)
No. Scaring the shit out of at least 10 people in about 10 seconds. I won’t discount the skill but jeopardizing others’ safety, even just their sense of safety, nope. If this guy ends up killing someone I hope he gets a minimum sentence of involuntary manslaughter.
Cooper, Terry & NYC, the perfect trifecta. I love watching these videos. I’d never try it as my ass wud fall out! 😭
I love you guy's work! Keep up with the good attitude 🔥🔥🔥
People ride the same way in Philadelphia and I love it. I didn’t get it when I lived in a smaller city but now that I’m here it’s just the way it is
Nice one guys! Ride safe always, cheers from SG✌🏼
nice comments and good to know you point of view.... you are right about all
You are great man!!
Also ive had TWO close calls with children, i was not going that fast either time and, to me, the kids moved swifly and unpredictability as i got close. I am a pretty cautious rider and this kind of encounter is somewhat common for regular riders in nyc BUT i just wanna say this man is a pro which is why he rides like one
Good comment. Unfortunately here in America people just plain don’t move around in an orderly manner. The default expectation at this point is that people can behave erratically or just plain like assholes and the expectation is everyone else should just accommodate them.
He looks like Harry sheperd from windbreaker Webtoon, maybe the creator of the comic inspired by his looks and also hes cycling fixed. Love ur video and Ray inspired me to learn fixed tricks and what is use for 👌👌
