Good idea. You can add some 1x2 wire for them to stick their heads through to reduce their sideways slinging of food. Coturnix Corner has a videobon this modification
I'm almost done building my cages and I've been looking for a something to reduce waste in my j feeders. everything else I've seen requires me to cut metal wire and grind down the sharp edges. i don't have a grinder and i don't want to buy one just for this. this is perfect! Thank you!
In other words when quail eat they eat just like a cat does. A cat fills up their mouth in one bite if possible, in turn when they realize they can't close their mouths they will drop half of that food back out and depending on the cat they sling it.
OK, just did this mod to all my feeders. The quail are having no issues with reaching the food, and there is a lot less in the trough, so they are not kicking it out nearly as much. Wonder why this is not built into the feeder already?
no waste feeder for quail. use open bottom cages hang like rabbit cages and let chickens run freely under them and they eat the spelled feed. no waste works good.
My quails get 28% protein feed which is more expensive then regular 20% chicken feed. A lot of people who raise chickens do so in stacked cages with waste trays (for urban environments and to increase birds per SF)
Wouldn't it be just as easy to tape a piece of the box to the outside and cut small 1" holes for them to reach in? Imagine that that would prevent from shaking too much, as well. In a 8" feeder, can put 5 or 6 holes in there.. should be more than enough.
You would be replacing the cardboard every couple of weeks. It would get worn down as they put their head in an out. This way just makes the amount of food in the feeder less.
Terry at Coturnix corner has a video using wire cut to fit over the opening, i would think using the combination would make a big difference. Im going to try that.
How are you hi I'm a regular visitor to you Every video of yours is wonderful to me, my country of Bangladesh, I cherish quail bird here. Your benefit can not be expressed or appreciated by watching your video. Hope for me and hope for some help from you. Thank you
Are you still having luck with this method. I just put them in there with 1 week and the waste is pretty significant. I think i need to readjust the box on the inside.

Just as you scratched in there the quail will do the exact same thing, filling it up to overflowing.
Awesome man..
I was actually already thinking about using those rabbit feeders. Good vid.
great idea! can I ask what size that J feeder is?
what is the name of this type of feeders?. I can't get them in my country and I want to find how to build them DIY- Thanks!
At 0:10 - 0:11 sec of video, bottom right - mouse

maybe instead of using a pc of cardboard cut a piece of plastic like from a tupperware food container and glueing it with plastic cement
Use a 1/8" markerboard sheet. It's tough, thin, flat and you can cut it to the exact size you need.

@@Markinthemiddle Just watched that video and you can see the food on the front lip just about to fall down and be wasted.
The feeder idea is just a lazy solution, my quail do not waste a single crumb, and i have not feeder at all..

+Benjamin Petersen you ill need to adjust the size of the gap/holes u till it’s right, took me about 5-6 try’s to get right.
Wouldn't the quail poo into the trough?
yup, this is rubbish
