a 4 year would understand and build easily ,the video is good
Andrew ... not sure if you are still checking your posts or not, but here goes!
You have mentioned several times about the bird waste and smell.
Your answer is simple enough, designate an area for the waste and sprinkle a small amount on each layer of newsprint or wood shavings. Add any grass clippings, raw vegetable waste from the kitchen.
With the almost daily rains you have it may be necessary to put a cover to keep from water saturation. Some moisture is necessary just not to a point of saturation.
Turn the pile every 3 or 4 days and you will end up with some good compost.
I have a small compost pile, but its more a space issue. I just dont have room for a proper one.
Thank you! I build this cage a d it works amazing! Love it! Made 4 levels so I can keep up to 100 quail in one rack.
I did the same thing. There's room to build another level, so might as well. I also adjusted the length to the poop trays I was able to find. Mine was less that 3' in length so I still used 2' x 2's for the main support legs, but I probably would've used 2' x 4's instead if it was ~4' long with the 4 tiers.
Great Video, I made a 4 level QUAIL CAGE with dividers into 3 of the levels.
Cutting the wire so you can fold over the sharp edge has to be the best advice.
Plan to start on a two rack version of this today! Thanks to your Video.
I love this so clear to follow. I thought about building something like this, I would have to use expanded metal on the outside due to predators.. the design and your instructions are perfect.
Katheryn Brown I'm glad you liked it, this was one of my first videos so it's a little rough,
Just a suggestion, if you use washers with the screws it holds better. Hope that helps.
Thanks for the video. I especially like the detailed how to and the measurement. Now I have no excuse but to get on with building mine. The only change I'll have to make is I live in an area with all types of predators who would love to have a go at my quail. So I'll have to extend the hardware cloth to cover the two lower levels.
Thanks again.... Cheers!
Great tutorial! The issue with the pans is that Walmart no longer carries them. When they did they were around $10 just like they said in the video. I had purchased one from my local Walmart about a year ago. The manager said they no longer carry them and they were discontinued by the company. There are pans available at some auto supply stores (Advanced auto supply in South Florida for example) that sell pans for $10, however they are about 12" shorter and slightly wider than the ones in the video. Simply adjust the sizing of the cuts to these pans and you will be golden
There is a big gap between the egg roll try and the side of the cage. I had to add additional 19 inch sections of 1x2 to make the bottom flush, so quails can not squeeze into different levels.
The Oil pans in that size run $30 each, the wood cost me $77.00, Screws $12, Vinyl coated mesh for the egg roll trays $24, hardware cloth for the outside cost $50 (I did not use chicken wire), Staples $5. This cage cost me $258 and took 2 days. There is absolutely no way you made this in an hour!
Yeah. The lowest price I see for the pans is $36, each. This is not economical.
That looks like a simple but effective cage that is easy to build. Thank you for showing us and sharing the plan of this cage.
Looks great, still researching, starting quail in the spring, and I need to start putting together cages. Looking forward to catching up on some of your other videos as well. Thanks!
Thanks a lot. Very informative. I wish the audio was better though or with EN subs.
does the poop tray have enough poop clearance? Or would you make a bigger gap?
Hi Andrew ive been watching this video for so many times untill ive decide to help out i have modestly tried to gather all the details into a pdf document I'm going to try to attach to keep the information rolling, thank you
10:30 instead of cutting out the strip in the middle, can you just cut it in half and bend it in a corner for more durability/reusability (repurpose later)? Or is overlapping too messy?
Compost ..I use leaves 🍃 grass clippings and garden vegetables waste adding my wood ashes in also with chicken manure
Nice work, thank you, allah yakrimak, alger
You should use a grinder to cut your wire. Way easier and faster, and no sharp edges. Also, you should pre-fab the wire (door and feeder holes) before you install the wire to the cage. Would love to see your watering system.
I have been to Oahu while my daughter was in the Army there, driving around saw a lot of homes there with practically no yards.
great Job... well done keep up the good Job
Very nice video. Going to use most of these instructions except my quails will be outside during our cold winter so I'll need to add a shelter.
I still don't quite understand how the craig jigg bit comes into place. D
For some reason I can't quite compute why you would need to do that or where those screws even go 🤔
It makes joints with hidden screws, it also creates the angles needed for optimum joint. It’s not required but I have the tool to do it.
Where can you find the metal pans? Looks like the Walmart doesn't stock them anymore.
We bent some from tin scraps. Found them on amazon ( $31 ouch!) here in Alaska Napa has em but still ugly price tag. Let me know if you find a national retailer that has em at a fair price :0)
Will the quail nothing under the opening in the front?
How many quail can you put on a 48 inch X 32 inch floor. These are coturnix.
How are you able to get the hardware cloth to lay so flat?
👌💯
now that its been in use, would you suggest adding some center support on the egg roll out trays?
I would adjust the angel a little more to make it steeper (maybe 1/2inch more at the back) other then that it’s fine. Very little sag.
Do you have "lids" on each level? or does the poop tray act as the lid of the one below? And then I am guessing that if you take out the poop tray to clean it, the egg catching tray from the one above will be the lid?
Their is no lid on each section other then on the top one
Even with the poop tray removed their is only a 1 1/2 inch gap that they can not get out from.
If you have a predators you may consider adding a top to each cage, which could be done by stapling it to the bottom of the bars holding the poop tray above.
I am enjoying your videos.
What do you use for audio recording though?
It sounds like the audio level is clipping on all of your videos and is a bit painful on the ears.
If you are not sure how to do this, let me know what you record with and I can try to find out how you change the input gain.
I am guessing that it is an issue from the recording time and not editing later.
From about 05:30, the sound is better for a while and then quite quiet later on.
Sorry man. Don't mean to be giving you a hard time. Genuinely enjoy your videos and want to help. Your previous, wire-only cages where genius and were how I was going to build mine, but after seeing this new design, I am definitely switching. ha ha
Andrew you have the 4 2X2 listed as 60 inches but in the video you say 6ft tall? I was cutting all the pieces when I noticed 60 inch looks a little short?
+unclemonkey808 sorry about that, human error, I have 2 sets of cages I built, 1 was 5ft the other 6ft which would be 72 inch’s.
Aloha Quails No problem, I was prepared and bought a couple extra 2X2's. I'm gonna shoot you an email soon.
I’m 5 years late, but you should be composting that poopy sand
What is hardware cloth?isn't it a 1/2inch net?
Hmm...at no point do I see the "roof". Did you just use more chicken wire? Mine are going outside, so I'm going to just get some sort of weatherproof top (like white vinyl corrugated sheeting...so it protects from rain yet allows light through)
Yes i used 1x1 wire for the top. I have mine under a shelter i built. Putting a roof on top wouldn't really protect them from the elements.
How many quail can you put in each seperate cage
Each tray in this cage is enough space for 30 quail at a 4 bird SF. You could easily adapt this cage to have 4 levels meaning you could keep 120 quail less then 10SF.
Would they work to breed quail in also? I am just starting out with quail. If i could add roosters and use as breeding cages also how many roosters per hen do you recommend
Any cage can be used for breeding. Just make sure to keep your female to male ratio right for optimum fertility and comfort,
4f-1m seems to work best.
Super
😎😎😎😎😎nice😎👍👍👍👍👍
correction.
that drip pan is 48.00 at walmart.
reduced to 38.00.
not feasable
Price varies by store/location. You can get them on Amazon for $30
www.amazon.com/Hopkins-11430-Galvanized-Dishwasher-Refrigerator/dp/B000F5XQMO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1524375820&sr=8-2&keywords=oil+drip+pan&dpID=4154SEF4A0L&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch
so if I did my math correct it should be 9 2x2x8 right
I use a stapler to join my wire
Hi Andrew how are you doing I have see so many coments but none of them ask about up date in the battery cage any change in the side
The only change i made was to adjust the angle of the egg tray (where the quail walk) . Oter then that its still the same. Im working on some new cages and will have another video showing them and how to make them in the near future.
Where do you buy that metal tray at ?
Walmart, They are $10-$15 each.
www.walmart.com/ip/ATP-Large-Oil-Drip-Pan/16778234
I have a $1.25 Store near me, the sell plastic drip pans. Dollar Tree sometimes has pans or paint pans as well, for a budget version of his pans, you may need to buy two for the size.
typically the plastic ones are smaller and thin, These have a rolled edge which will help with the bending/folding when covered in poop, But on a budget for less then a couple of bucks they would work.
Holly cow these trays you used are $34 each from my walmart! Cheaper and faster to just order off amazon when being a prime member. Built this and determined i needed some wind protection and added 3/" plywood to the sides and added 2, 2x4's to the legs to sturdy them up. Love your vids and great tutorial!
Agree on the price, he was quoting the half size ones. I found free shipping and $32 each, but decided still to pricey for a crap catcher.
IF YOU DONT PAINT OR SPRAY THE WOOD WITH WEATHER PROTECTION...
THEY WILL ONLY LAST 1 1/2 YEAR.
Ours lasted about 2 years before I changed it out to a bigger version. But depending on where you are in the world a coat of paint wouldn’t go amiss
I made it with woodprix handbooks !
Bad idea for that doors. You should've done better.
You run your mouth too much go ahead and fix it and put it together and explain it as you put it together
the audio is crap and you ramble one. couldn't watch it
I want to make a personal, and Formal Thank you Andrew. Your tutorial here is Super , Absolutely Super . . . And, the end product is very Professional, and functional. I now have a plan for our entire qual operations . . . Again, I thank you
Your welcome, Let us know how it goes when you build your own.
