I've seen a lot copperheads and cottonmouths do it however I've also seen a rattle snake not go off at all when my toes were literally 2 inches from it. That's when I spotted it buried beneath pine straw and I took a quick step back. If I hadn't spotted it then I likely would have stepped on it. A big fat eastern diamond back.

Rattlesnakes may be feared, but I feel like they are more gentle and averse to aggression than their reputation. That rattle of theirs plays a big part in avoiding trouble. If you wanted to strike everything in reach, why warn them with that distinctive sound?

What does it do? Rattle a warning and keep backing away. It doesn't "charge" or "chase" the humans. The snake just wants to get away, it's bite is it's last resort if you had pressed it further. Well not all snakes. Eastern Indigos aren't gonna bite you.. period. they're totally non-aggressive and I don't think you could get them to open their mouths. I know they never did around us! just super friendly but they got to know us too. they ain't stupid. We had a lotta frogs, and small lizards & stuff so they just stayed on our property year round!
yes they do. Eastern Indigos are not only beautiful if you approach non aggressively they'll just remain where they are. In the winter they got so used to us they'd crawl up on our laps looking for warmth. I've never heard of anyone being bitten by them they're simply non-aggressive. Even our 2yo Great Granddaughter got used to them they'd actually touch her face with their tongues. She said it tickled!
This one didn't wish to fight, so every time you invaded the snake's personal space, it moved away. But it STILL has the s-curve in the neck, which is a warning to tell you to back off... I am SURPRISED that the snake didn't lose it's patience. But every snake is different... 🤷♂️...

You all say that, but my friend was coming home from the Colorado River one night. He stopped because his son needed to take a piss. Kid gets out of the truck, takes a piss on the side of the road and gets bit by a rattlesnake. The kid is now in a wheel chair. The only good snake is a dead snake.

There’s no such thing as an aggressive snake. They are defensive and are afraid of humans and other then a reticulated python or anaconda would never consider one a food source. I have noticed it’s usually a tactile response that will draw a strike. If you had touched the snake it would probably then strike it.
There are 2 kinds of snake bites. Defensive or a food response. From the snake's perspective, there is a giant looming over it holding a hot object, which would not prompt a food response. The snake is also clearly acting defensively with its posture and tail rattling.
My estimate is less then a year old. The snake had three sections of rattle. One button (born with) and two new sections. Each section is added when they shed. This snake has shed twice. Usually within first year of life.
As a snake owner they are not trying to hurt you they just want space. The smell is important If you rubbed that glove on a mouse or rat. Also how full it is. They are very smart and wont even eat slightly rotten food.
What I think most people don’t understand is that Snakes aren’t going to come chase after you to bite you. They only bite as a last resort thinking it might get them out of a stressful situation ❤

FYI that doesn't give off a heat signature it won't strike it more than likely.
It's a warm glove but is probably to hot and not the temperature of a warm blooded mammal. Its sensor receptors can tell the difference.
