The XL seemed really big to me, but I am so glad I got it. Fits everything. Flavor from Big Green Egg, adding chunks of wood like pecan, is dramatically better than my other cookers. Love it.
Less than a year ago I lost my wife bad doctor. I was so distraught that I gave my fishing gear and my egg to my less than steller sister in law. She won't return them now at 70 I just won't have the time to correct my error in judgment. So be happy with you have and Wife it's it's a small thing and much pleasure will come from it. Keith
I have the MiniMax. I sold my Large about 18 months ago. I replaced it last week with a Kamado Joe this time around. I kind of like the Green and Red color scheme I now have.
Great video and explanation. Good to know which one to buy and what for. Will probably get a medium and a XL for flexibility. The small one is cute though
Papa J, you’re the man! If you want a small get a small!!!! Remember me, eggtoberfest feast 2018!!! The wife needs to realize that if Papa J is not happy, no one is happy!!!😉
Remember you?? Are you kidding me, you made my day. Hope you and your family are well. I will pass your comment on to my wife, fingers crossed. P.S. my wife is wonderful and does like me to be happy - that might help.
Funny questions, since recording this I have sold the XXL, Medium and not looking for a SM. I am very happy with my XL and use it 90% of the time. I did get another MiniMax so when I travel I go with 2 MM for large tailgates or 1 for family trips.
I have the mini, it's basically useless unless you are cooking just for yourself. I have a medium, which is fine for my wife and I for most things we need, except you can't put multiple items at different temps on it. I have the 2xl, forgetta about it! You can cook anything and everything on it. If I'm giving advice on a new BGE owner, the XL is the one that will take care of nearly everything you need.
I started with the large. I started off trying to cook pizzas with eggorator. I find difficult to get the egg to the recommended 600 degrees and then keeping it there while I cook 4 medium sized pizzas one at a time. I have 3 to feed the family and an extra for leftovers. It takes much too long because of the extra cook time required to cook a pizza at 425 or whatever. I’ve done low and slow cooks in the large as well. Not great with a large piece of meet. Beer can chicken or a couple of pork loins is great. I so a lot of indirect cooks. The air flow may be a factor as you’ve stated. I recently purchased an XL. Based on the way I cook, I wish I would have started with this one. Low and slow with eggorator is no problem as you said. I spread the coals out evenly, start the fire in the center and it burns slowly from the center out. I think it works better than the large because of the increased diameter. With the large, I would put a lot of fuel in it for a long cook and it seemed not burn as well (long) because the coal is stacked. In the xlarge you can do more more of a snake burn like I used to do in my Weber without actually burning around the perimeter. On the XL, I burn from center out as I mentioned. The XL also has no problem maintaining the high pizza temps. You just get it 800 degrees and then drop in the eggorator, grate, and pizza stone and close the top. It will drop to 450 when you do that, but if you leave it wide open the temp will come back up to 600 in about 15 minutes. I have had limited success doing that on the large. On the XL I can also cook larger pizzas more successfully be cause of the increased airspace. The XL is just easier to regulate. The large has more of a learning curve IMO.
I must say I am glad I have both the large and XL. It give me more versatility when cooking two dishes for the same the have different egg configuration requirements. Different temps or direct / indirect cooks. Yeah... you can use a moon stones to split your egg for both direct and indirect during the same cook, but I tend to run out of space on the large.
I will agree, the XL is easier to maintain temps. watch how hot it can get, I have had times it is hard to control the climb in temp and it takes a while to cool back down. Enjoy your cooks.
Why not just get a pizza oven? Ooni or the like. They make for a better pizza #1, fire rolls over the top and forms a better crust, easy to get up to temp between pizzas. It's a small footprint, uses same charcoal/wood, handsome addition to put next to your green egg as I've done mine. Just a thought. I've seen the pizzas on UA-cam from the green egg, and they all look under cooked on the top. Very little golden brown.
@@sstanforddpt Because they want to cook more than just pizza. You have to raise the pizza up into the dome to get the top golden brown. Most people do it wrong.
Whas deciding between these two kamado one handle think its better how is the green handle is it a issue for you also cleaning tray a bit inconvenient compared to competitors
I noticed on your 2XL there's a Ceramic Heat Deflector when you opened your lid. I cannot find that Ceramic Heat Deflector any where. Did it come with the 2XL?
New Sub here! I just bought my first BGE and I went with the XL! I created a UA-cam channel called Two Bit Smoke and I’m thinking about making videos to chronicle my experiences and to playback for me so I can learn from my own videos and mistakes! You have an awesome collection! Hopefully you can start making more videos! Smoke on, sir!
With a little tweaking of your voice, and phrasing, just like Andy use to do, you could sound just like Andy Rooney. First thing that came to my mind, in all honesty. Congrat.s, on your collection. I settled on a Weber Summit Charcoal Grilling Center. Does everything, and it easily rolls in and out of my garage. With a resectioned leg, I'm not moving anything heavy, nor breaking anything ceramic. Keep up the great work.
Papa J, I have a covered, screened in porch attached to the back of my home. I normally cook in the front yard just outside my garage where I store my Yoder pellet smoker (sloped back yard and no outdoor back yard patio). My wife & I are empty nesters now, so I'd like to get a smaller smoker that I can place on the screened-in porch for a chicken, couple of steaks, Tri Tip, etc, which would be very convenient, but I'm concerned about heat, sparks, etc. I plan to keep the Yoder for the larger, longer cooks. Would you recommend one of the smaller Green Egg smokers for the enclosed, screened-in porch? Which one? thanks so much.
Hi Ted, My concern would be placing an Egg in a screened in porch. Anything with a fire and "sparks" could/would be very dangerous. I know some Eggheads do place the Egg on a deck but use something fire protected for under the egg. I cook in my driveway and bring the egg out for each cook and roll in black when cool (usually the next day). Please do a lot of research about placing anything with a fire on a covered porch. If you are looking for something for just you and the wife, a MiniMax (check my channel for a video about the MiniMax) is a nice cooker and can do a variety off cooks very well. I also like the large if that's not too large - the vanity for that cooker is amazing. Let me know what you do. Thanks Papa J
You sir need a building, just for your green eggs, lol. Hey my wife thinks I have a gun buying addiction so I understand. I just won a green egg from calling into Knoxville radio station sports animal, no joke. I believe its the large, its supposed to be delivered this coming week, I'm super stoked!
Wow! For the price of Big Green Egg, let’s just all go buy one of each. Or, we could just buy a big Weber and spend the difference on really good meat.
I want to do beer can chicken, boston butt, sometimes both, and occasionally brisket. I'm deciding between the L and XL. Leaning towards XL. THOUGHTS? OH, AND MRS WIFEY! LET THE MAN GET THAT LAST EGG!!!!
The large will do fine for all those cooks, unless you are looking to cook a large brisket. I like to cook 16 plus briskets and the XL is perfect for that size. The extra room in the XL is the best. If I could only have 1 the XL. enjoy the hunt
I would lean towards the XL, it gives you more options for your cooks. You can still do a single burger if you want but you can also do a 22# brisket if you want. I like having the extra real estate for larger cooks. Yes it cost more but that’s a one time investment. Let me know what you decide and how the cooks go...
@@GrillingwithPapaJ is the burn on both the same. My mate has the Large and I would hate to invest in the big boy and it underperforms for searing stakes etc
@@pynappel you will not be disappointed. I use my XL for pizza 600 plus degrees. Steaks and burgers no problem. The air flow (IMO) is better with the XL, just clean it out ever once and a while - like all the Eggs.
This is a comment for Papa Joe's wife: Hey, your husband absolutely needs small BGE !!! I have just MiniMax, but my wife doesn't allow me to buy Large. . . . . I understand you Papa Joe
In the Netherlands €999 for the minimax. Medium €1300 large €1740 XL €2515. 2XL will be my last Big Green egg purchase in a few weeks but it costs €3870. Maybe a trip to Germany is worth it.
Papa J - I have a XL.......what should be my next purchase? Second question, do you ever use a temp control system like smobot or DigiQ? What would you recommend?
As for the next purchase that has a lot to do with the type of cooks you do, size of your family and if you want to do remote cooks. My first was the Xl and second was a MiniMax. The MM allowed me too easily travel and to remote cooks. I still take it on road trips, with its 13" cook surface you can do a variety of cooks. As for Temp control, I own one (can't even remember who makes it) but don't use it. I find that the egg does a very good job maintaining temp, just make sure the vent hole are clear and you have a good amount of (quality) lump - and you are off to the races. My longest cook was on my XL - 22 hours at 275. Hope this helps, enjoy... Papa J
I actually sold a few and never got the SM. All is good. I mainly cook on the XL - love that thing, very easy to maintain temp and I can cook a wide variety on it. Thanks for checking in and hope you enjoyed the video.
Only one option if you were me, XL. Yes it is pricey but you can cook 1 chicken or feed 16-20 people. Mine manages temp perfectly. I mostly use my XL for all my cooks at home.
@@robleblanc3492 for me I use what ever seasoning I like or just go with Salt and Pepper. Start breast side down for about 15-20 minutes then flip it over and cook until you get to an internal temp over 165 in the deepest part of the chicken. Those babies are heavy! And not inexpensive…. I have yet to even see one we used or taste anything that’s come off one. I’m excited to figure out how I’m gonna try one out.
Look at the price of your cars. They will cost you money each day you use them. Those grills will last 20 years with good maintenance. So sounds like a way better investment. Most people have 2-3 cars. So why not invest in a few grills. It’s not like €6000 is a lot of money. Good audio equipment cost way more.
