Today we are reacting to an Australian band called ZOOT that was recommended to us by multiple people. This was the first time we had ever heard of them. They did a cover of The Beatles song, Eleanor Rigby. What do y’all think of their version of this song?

The first way - Zoot rhymes with loot or suit. The lead singer Daryl Cotton passed away several years ago - 2012. Arguably Zoot’s biggest hit was was “1 x 2 x 3 x 4” in 1968. The lead guitarist Rick Springfield had a couple of hits after moving to the U.S.A. in the 1970s. The Zoot was reforming for a tour with Aussie legend Russell Morris as lead singer. Russell had many Aussie hits in the late sixties, seventies and eighties. The tour did not go ahead because of Covid. The Bass player, Beeb Birtles became a founding member of the Little River Band, which had several hits in the USA and several worldwide hits from the mid 70s through to the mid 80s. Daryl Cotton became a kids T.V. show host and later successfully toured Australia as part of a pop nostalgia group. Rick Brewer went on to drum for several Aussie Bands.

Oh wow you know a lot about them. Thanks for clearing up how to pronounce it too. I didn’t wanna say it wrong. Lol. We do love Rick Springfield over here! Even my daughters generation knows him. 😊

@@ToniaElkins - they came to my suburb (Reservoir) in the late 60s to perform at our local Catholic Church hall in their pink suits. They sort of became known as the “Pink Zoot” and the girls loved them. As the Zoot, the group weren’t my “cup of tea”, but you could not miss hearing them on the wireless or not see them on TV in the late 60s and early 70s. I only liked their version of “Elenor Rigby”, other than that I was not a fan. But my wife loves “1 x 2 x 3 x 4” and she often plays it in the morning on our juke box, so I have sort of gotten used to it. I know a lot about them as one of my best friends (Ronnie Burns) toured with Daryl Cotton in the nostalgia group Burns Cotton & Morris. He gave my wife a photo of the Zoot in their pink suits. Imagine Rick Springfield in a flannelette pink top with pink satin pants. Ha Ha. Ronnie is still in contact with Rick and Barry Gibb (Bee Gees).

I hadn't seen this live version before, so thanks for that. Unfortunately I don't think the quality of live sound recording was that great back in 1969. I think some of the other YT studio videos of Zoot doing this song would be more indicative of their performance of this song.
If you want to see a great Aussie rock band, check out Cold Chisel (Jimmy Barnes and Ian Moss on guitar) doing "Wild Thing" or "Bow River" - you won't regret it.

    Greetings ladies!
Some time back the ASX TV UA-cam channel, via Sammy Hagar's Rock & Roll Road Trip videos, caught up with Rick Springfield at his Malibu home. It's a fun episode, the way only Sammy can do interviews. You should check it out.
Rick is 72 now. Still doing gigs, movies... and I think he's also back on US ABC's General Hospital. That should excite a few old American grannies 😂
