    Whenever people make racially offensive jokes to me I play dumber than Ernest and tell them I don’t get it. Then I ask them to explain. They usually try to brush it off but I never let it go. You gonna have to explain your racism to my face :)

    I grew up in constant situations where I was one of the “only ones” so at my big age, I have no tolerance for it. Like you said, it’s unprofessional and unnecessary. I definitely would’ve been bothered by the comments because it’s not my responsibility to shoulder their ignorance. Done with that phase of my life.

    • @Ashleighrenee42

      Shandale Santana that’s the thing, unfortunately. Not everyone works for a company that is open to you talking about it and not every employer actually wants to do something about it. So if you aren’t being treated with respect and you don’t feel comfortable going to HR, you gotta be willing to take your talents elsewhere 😕

    You are never too old to change careers. It's crazy to make an 18 year old child think they need to know what they want to do for the rest of their lives. That's just crazy!!!
    My mom went back to college and got her masters in her 50s. She is a therapist and LOVES what she does. She's the happiest she's ever been, career wise. Don't be afraid to make a change if it's in your heart.

    • @StellaMcxx
      @StellaMcxx 4 роки тому +19

      Lisa Rafael how is that a compliment? That is a complete racial stereotype, there is no complement behind that at all unless you’re dealing with a professional cleaner.
      Just because you think it’s a compliment doesn’t make it a compliment, us Mexicans find it quite offensive when derogatory comments are made like that.
      Just like you wouldn’t ask an African American woman to touch her natural hair, there are many things you can compliment before a stereotype

    • @StellaMcxx
      @StellaMcxx 4 роки тому +14

      Lisa Rafael i think if it’s not your race or ethnicity then you have no right to comment on the situation and by some miracle you turn around and say you are Mexican then it’s clear you’ve never been stereotyped because I can assure you this wouldn’t be your reaction at all

    Your experience touched me deeply because me too, I have been in these situations. I'm Polish and I live in Paris . At the beginning, when I started working in my first two jobs : the first at the leather shoe shop and after in the luxe fashion industry gallery, I had a lot of comments referring to my origins. They were not only coming from "white French" but also from Asian girls working with me. I guess the possible reason might have been my nice portfolio of languages and at that time, I already had my masters degree and while working for fashion industry I entered my PhD. All of these things might have created jealousy from my asian colleagues, who weren't very good in French. The funniest thing was that they were the ones who were supposed to train me for 2 weekends (I only worked on weekends because I had my school during the week) . They were telling me one thing, concerning the storage of clothes, our needs of restocking t-shirts and all that jazz, and when I was doing what I've been told, they completely switched the initial request by telling me that I DO IT WRONG BECAUSE I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY ARE TELLING ME, BECAUSE FRENCH IS NOT MY FIRST LINGUAGE... Like, beech what!??
    Also, little pointy comments and other stuff coming along with it. I have to admit, most of the time, the way in which I was treated by my co-workers and by two of my managers in the fashion gallery, made me feel like a sh.. I ended up quiting after 4 months.
    Since than, few years had passed and I'm older, wiser and have had many new corpo world experiences and from the perspective of the time I just feel pity for them
    There are some milieu where the concentration of rude and insecure about themselves people is just above the normal.

    I was a diversity hire as well at a funeral home. I applied for a position that was in the marketing and sales department. I noticed right away at my interview, I was the only mexicana there. I had noticed that the person giving me the interview was really hyping up my position and pretty much gave me the job on the spot. When I went for my first day, I realIzed quickly that my position had a pretty name but it was the job no one else wanted to do. I ended up quitting right away because I felt like I was lied to about what my duties would entail. I knew I was basically hired because they needed a minority and someone to do the dirty work. I was so disappointed that I wasn’t hired for my credentials. I wish people who aren’t minorities could just walk in the shoes of a minority just for one day.

    Hey Nikki! First off, I love you so much! I have been watching your videos for a while now and I identify with you immensely. My mom was a single mom and we moved around a lot, I have a stepfather, I am a 25 year old African American female...and ALSO like you, I have worked many administrative positions over the years. I clicked on this video because when I read the title, I was like “Oh, one more thing Nikki and I have in common.”
    Long story short, I have been racially discriminated against in a position as well within an office setting and was SHOCKED by it. I’m glad that there was an actual investigation though and hopefully that company is no longer in business or is under new management. When things like this happen, we tend to be numb to it because it happens SO MUCH that we don’t necessarily see it as a bad thing until someone else points it out for us and we let it sink in all at once. I am glad that you quit and now make AMAZING UA-cam videos like this one for your glamazons. 🙌🏽💪🏽💯 I appreciate you Nikki! Also also....can you do a meet and greet sometime soon? I live in Maryland but I am planning on taking a trip soon. I swear I won’t stare at you awkwardly or confuse you with Nikki Tutorials loll Much love,
    Your Glamazon Kelsey

    Those were some very discriminatory statements and a hostile work environment for sure. This is classic case stuff that I would have read back in law school. You deserve much better than being anyone's diversity hire. You are amazing! love ya!

    So I grew up in north eastern Alberta Canada. I’m also a First Nations woman. Our largest work force/industry, especially when I was 18-20was the oilfield. So now the thing about my situation is I knew I was a “diversity hire”, so to speak. The policy is because where these job sites are, they are also on traditional native lands, lands that were ceded by the government for use originally for weapons testing with the Air Force but then they also discovered liquid gold and so drilling began. But yes because I’m from one of the reserves these lands originally belonged to, they do hiring specifically for First Nations people, which was good for me, I was a hard worker and even though this job was only supposed to be a summer job I ended up keeping it for about 2.5 years. Aaaaanyways, now the issue with the oilfield being near and around rural towns, things get pretty weird, pretty racial, pretty fast. And I was no stranger to it.
    For these positions they set aside for indigenous people, they’re often administrative jobs or jobs where you have to deal with other people or companies or whatever, because just like this company you worked for, for the oilfield companies it was like “seeeee we’re hiring natives! We’re not racist or anything like that because look at all these native contractors we hired” (I should also say I was definitely a contract worker, so I wasn’t even really working for the actual main company, but also.... I was. Anyways). So I was put as administrator in a warehouse which also meant i was the first face they seen. I feel like I also need to point out, many people don’t think I’m First Nations from looking at me, I’ve got dark hair, dark eyes, tall, native woman shape (lol) but I’ve got pale skin lol so I got certain, id say correct treatment, OR because I was a woman, I got looked over entirely And my male coworkers often got asked questions, questions that I could easily answer but hey.... I’m just a woman, what could I possibly know.
    And then once people found out I was native it was almost immediately assumed I had kids..... I started the job at 19 so no... although I get that’s what you often see from other native women, that ain’t me. Also, once when someone asked me where I was from, I said the reserve, they literally said to me “aaahhhhhh that’s why they hired you”.......... ummmmmm sure man. Not because I can do my job or anything though right?!
    But I will say that those people I worked with, I was lucky to have that bunch because I had been the youngest person in the whole warehouse, so they became very supportive and protective of me which I didn’t even realize was something I needed back then because some men who would come in, literally were angered at the idea of a woman asking them questions (necessary questions of course) and some had even tried to get me fired. So that was fun.......
    But I will say one of my biggest regrets was not standing up for myself as much as I should have. Being a native woman I had this idea I should just be happy I have a job and so every time they denied me a promotion that I truly believed I deserved, my eventual response was to quit. And that sucked because I loved that job tbh......

    A little story, as a black teenager, Its been a few situations where I was the token black girl. Friendships mostly. I was naive and very unobservant but it took me a while to realize these people only keep me around so they can be racist and use me to justify that they aren't racist...which makes no sense. I was "I have a friend that's black" for so many white people. I'm so observant when picking friends now, especially since I do surround myself with diverse people like white, asian, Indian, etc. I love having a variety of friends

    For anyone wondering I think that was an E-receptionist place which was offering Virtual offices and meeting rooms. Is basically for anyone who are a one man band, people working online from home or people who work freelance where they go to the customer (makeup artist, hairdresser, plumber, electrician, etc).
    These places are REALLY common in the UK. Usually though they are VERY professional places...
    U did them well! They deserved it.
    Don’t hate me... but I do think that you did resemble Dayanara a tiny bit.... (I think the annoyed face helped lol). But they really missed their Maritza so annoying.!!!

    So at my old job there was a pregnant girl who happened to be Mexican. This white girl asked her how many other kids she had, she said 2. The white girl said “Oh okay, I know you guys usually have multiple kids, so I was just curious.” My friend reported her to HR & she got written up. The pregnant girl handled it VERY well, she was still super polite. I probably would’ve lost my job that day. Lol

    Yasss, a whole video or playlist on job-related advice would be wonderful!
    Microaggression at its finest. I've heard it practiced so much in the workforce. It annoys me when you call them out on it, and they have the nerve to feel offended. Some colleges accept minorities for the sole purpose of trying to prove that they are diverse, knowing darn well the majority of the student body and faculty do not favor minorities. The fact that this behavior still happens today is disheartening.

    Wooow, this is a topic that not a lot of people speak on because not only is it diversity hires but also diversity enrolls in schools too which makes you very sceptical about sending your kids to school because they get pulled out of class often to show parents that are trying to enroll their kids that's "oh we have a non racial description policy also" but really they are mad grimy like that😒
    Aside from that I love your videos so much and I've been subscribed since the "hair growth tips" you are one of my favorite UA-camrs that I aspire to be one day♥️

    It’s crazy how much the Hispanics and Asians have so much in common. You have no idea how many time people tell me to bring eggrolls to potluck or don’t believe me when I tell them I was born and raised in California. The stereotypes are hurtful and ridiculous! Yet we still try to give them the benefit of the doubt and they continue to pull that trigger. This is why I get along with Latino girls so much because we understand each other’s struggle.

    Wow the last bit where you were explaining how you felt crazy really screamed to me- I’ve been feeling cast out in my workplace, people make funny comments about my husband, myself, and my child because I’m in an interracial marriage and my child is mixed and they just say things that make me go “what?” Like.... what? but I’ve just been like “whatever, I’m here to make money,” right, but you helped me realize I really should be keeping track of these things. Maybe I’m not the only one 🤔
