Audio Logs is back for a brand new series! It's the GameSpot show where the people behind the games you love tell the untold stories of how they were made. This week we're joined by Remedy Entertainment's Creative Director Sam Lake to discuss the journey to making the studio's next game: Alan Wake II.
Sam discusses the various ideas and genres that the team toyed with before settling on a psychological horror game with dual protagonists. He also talks about the new protagonist, Saga Anderson, and her relationship with her partner, Alex Casey, who looks a little familiar...
Audio Logs airs every Thursday on GameSpot.
Sam Lake literally my hero. Remedy is one of these few developers who still make great games and not degrading with years.
They have a vision for the games they want to make and see it through.
He is immortal!
Most the talent of these Singleplayer games comes from the writing, he's a good writer with alot of interesting concepts. I'll play anything he's involved in writing.
Amen
@@LouSassol69er And best of all, he tries to make the most out of the interactive aspect of the medium and is one of the few game auteurs that really knows how to do, and that's what makes Sam Lake and the rest of Remedy so special.
Nice to see Max get into video game development after his time Brazil.
Yeah Max Payne secretly is part from Remedy universe. Alan Wake is from New York and Max also. :D
@@JusticeInGaming_JIGAlex Casey (aka the character that Alan Wake wrote about in his books) is literally Max Payne
that one is already in another separate universe
@@JusticeInGaming_JIGIP owns 2K now so Remedy cant have Max Payne part of their universe unless 2K would be willing to sell it back. 2K allowed to make Max Payne 1,2 remakes by Remedy though. That could be awesome.
@@kukuricapicaRemedy has confirmed they are in production of remaking Max Payne 1&2 so maybe there was a deal made or maybe even bought the rights back. But that’s something I’m not sure about.
Mr Lake has got to be one of the most creative visionaries in the gaming industry. He and his team deliver the most unique and incredible gaming experiences time and time again. I cannot express how much I enjoyed this video as a gamer and a budding writer.
Remedy are arguably one of the few studios left these days who still care about their fans and the games they make. Sam Lake is someone I’d love to talk to about his passion for games.
I’ve been a fan since Max Payne 1 and the original Alan Wake is one of the best games I’ve ever played. Can’t wait for the sequel. ❤
So much care that they made the game only digital and we only gonna play second part with Alan not the full game 🤣
Only a matter of time until they are releasing a hero shooter battle Royale season pass microtransaction grindfest.
@@maineman5757 They wont because they work for them self. They are NOT under freakn EA Ubisoft Activision publishers and theyre greed.
Yeah me too. I finished Max 1 and 2 on a computer in a public PC cafe around 2004 i think. After work every evening around 3 hours :). Than Max 3 on my PS3 four years ago. Control around 2020. Quantum Break/Alan Wake-American Nightmare spin off game on game pass a year ago & only 18 months ago finally played / finished Alan Wake Remastered version for the first time on PS4. So basically i am ReAdY for a new project from Remedy. ^_^.
Sam Lake is really the David Lynch of video games and I love him for it. So glad we can get these big budget AAA games that are just full of weird mysteries and supernatural shenanigans.
The moment that really got me hooked on Alan Wake (and Remedy as a studio) wasn't any of the deep lore or action stuff, it was that flashback to the apartment with Alice at 14:19. It's such a small moment, could easily have been a cutscene. But the fact that they made it playable really showed their approach to the importance of story in their work. Also the score in that scene is BEAUTIFUL. I am so keen for AW2!!
Can't wait to play this. Hope to see Control 2 in the next couple of years as well 🙏🏽
A legendary studio at this point. I love all their games!! and of course looking forward to Alan Wake 2!
Keep being awesome Remedy - lets goooo!!
@@manwithballsonarm6775: Death Rally, Max Payne 1 & 2, Alan Wake, Alan Wake: American Nightmare, Quantum Break, Control and incoming Alan Wake 2.
@@penyuwan Also Control 2 at some point in the future.
@@Cangaca777 and Max Payne 1 and 2 will be remade into 1 title probably after A.WAKE2.
I still play Death Rally, the original from 1996. The music tracks in it are peak 90’s, and one of the best of the decade. The mobile remake was pretty bad though.
Remedy always delivering the best quality, they put their hearts and soul into every work, I'm currently playing Control and I just love it so much, the creativity it has, things that I had never experienced in any other videogame, thank you Remedy for your hard work
Max Payne talking about Alan Wake?
Coincidentally, James McCaffrey also voices the character in Alan Wake's novels, Alex Casey, who is meant to be a shout-out to Max Payne. He also voices Thomas Zane in Alan Wake
Mr Max Payne has been in game development since the beginning my man. Never knew how thick his accent was though, I just think of that rundown gritty kind of new yorky accent from the OG. 😂
@@Jesusluvz i'm surprised how he looks without that grin from MP1
@@mattgerrish908yeah he’s also Zachariah Trench in Control
Theres no coincidences in Remedy games
I feel say that Sam Lake's dedication to merging film and video game is elevating the whole gaming industry. Remedy's stories, characters, moods and gameplay prove that video games are art.
The gaming industry would be much better off if more people in it were like Sam Lake.
Call it a hyperbolic statement, but I legit don't think there's a single developer who is more passionate about the stories and games they create or who has more dedication than Sam Lake does. The fact he kept trying to make a game for 13 years, but never could and is finally now able to release his dream game is just so inspiring and I'm sure most people would've given up after awhile, but Sam held out and hoped one day he'd be able to bring Alan Wake back because Alan Wake just means that much to him. The purest definition of a passion project and why I have full faith in both Sam and Alan Wake II.
Always enjoyable to listen to Sam Lake and his discussions on the game project with his viewpoints as a developer. Very respectable and dedicated man
to be honest when I heard him saying " I would love everybody to play all remedy games" I was screaming YES PLEASE!... We need more Creators this LEGEND of a MAN
Control was a supernatural experience I’d never seen before in video games, so excited for a new Alan Wake with hints of Control
I haven't pre-ordered any AAA games since 2006. But Sam's got me sold on this. I've pre-ordered it just now!
finished the game in about 21 hrs, absolute masterpiece
Man I cannot wait for this! AW1 was an insane game. Insanely good
p.s so true what he says about atmosphere and mood. Jump scares only get you so far.. but atmosphere is something special. Like a good example: fairly early in Alan Wake 1, when you have to walk through the forest to get to a gas station(I think) but thats something I’ll never forget. It was so scary, it felt so big and real. Amazing atmosphere and mood. Brilliant game design.
Anyway, cannot wait for AW2!
Couldn’t agree more. They are gathering inspiration from all the top resources 👍🏼
I haven't played the the Alan Wake Remastered but I had a blast playing the original on the X-Box 360 back when it first came out. That game pushed the envelope in ways it don't get as much recognition compared to a Resident Evil or Silent Hill game despite it being a psychological action horror game. I like that it's going more into a survival horror aspect in AW2.
Imagine a Sam Lake & Hideo Kojima collaboration project.
Legendary studio and legendary man. Last few that deliver what we want and what we need every time they release something. Keep up the good work. Im waiting for Max Payne remaster from you guys! Thats gonna be hot!
It's funny how Sam has even changed his name (to english version) and been on international business for years and years but he still has very strong Finnish accent. I am not complaining!
Remedy simply does not release bad games. There is always a level of polish and passion that shines through in a way that few other developers can match. Pre-ordered this a on day one and eagerly awaiting Oct. 17th. Love you guys!!!
as someone who played alan wake when it came out, and always remembered it as one of the best games ive ever played, this news is insane. cannot wait at all
I am so happy to have been here since the beginning of Remedy's journey and I love you Sam!!!
Gamespot is killing it with all the new interesting programs.
I’m so excited for this game Sam Lake looks like he would be an absolute blast to hang out with
love Sam, would watch him talk about his games for entire days.
Can't wait for this games, looks so good!
I only got into Alan Wake recently and this popped up in my recommendations! Can't wait to see Alan finally escaping THAT place!
If you haven't yet, I cannot begin to describe how much you need to play Control. It even includes a pretty awesome Alan Wake story DLC.
@@takoshihitsamaru4675 I heard of Control but never got around playing it.
When I saw the first trailer, the survival horror nature of this game roped me into giving Alan Wake a chance. I already owned Control but never played much of it because I was very confused by it. Once I played Alan Wake and watched a lore video, I was hooked and now I'm LOVING Control and super excited for Alan Wake 2 on Friday. Survival horror was definitely the right direction. Capitalizing on the success of Resident Evil style remakes in the design of Alan Wake 2 absolutely caught my attention. I loved Max Payne games but I never even realized all of these games shared something whether directly or indirectly. It's making me wanna pick up Quantum Break now too!
I played Alan Wake 13 years ago and its always stuck in my head. I loved Control and am so excited for Alan Wake 2.
Love the inspiration they are pulling from, True Detective was so good.
I played Alan Wake for the first time this summer, I'm so hyped for the next game.
For the real experience, you have to wait 13 years.
@@KonohaRamenNoodles 13 years? That's rookie numbers. Try being a Twin Peaks fan and waiting 25 years for the continuation
@@theunknownuser9609 also me.
You are so lucky. We wait so many years😮
I really adore Remedy games. The setting, environment, and of course the soundtracks. I do hope we get another chance to listen to Old Gods of Asgard/Poets of the Fall again.
I love Sam Lake 😂, Thanks man for your hard work, and for bringing us awesome games all these years.
Love the studio, and Sam Lake is just a mastermind
I love love love this man. I also love Alan Wake as much as one can ... SO EXCITED
The real Game of the Year right here!
Love Remedy and the crew behind this. Been a huge fan since the original Max Payne days and have experienced their entire catalogue. It's awesome to see that this is very much a culmination of a number of projects and I love the way that they are continuing to try and push what they can do with the medium. Their storytelling is also incredibly satisfying and one of the best aspects of Remedy games.
Can't wait for this game. I'm also excited for the Max Payne 1 and 2 remake!!! I still want to see Sam Lake's face as Max Face in it.
Thank you Remedy! Thank you Sam Lake and thank you Control!
This is how you give updates about your games! hats off
Recently, I was playing Alan wake and I've came across Sam lake's dialogue talking about every details of the Game, good to know he's develping the sequel... Great ideas i'm lookin' foward to playing it!!
5:54 Finally somebody mentions "The X-Files" which clearly was a influence alongside Twin Peaks.
Sam still looking young is amazing!!! Way to go Max... I mean Sam 😅
the first alan wake was the first time i realized that i had a favorite game, and it was that experience that set me on my path to be a writer, now as im on the cusp of my debut as the writer i oh so long ago wanted to be, alan comes back, wich to me is "the signal" im gonna make it... hehe see what i did there?
The level of hype I have for this game is insane. This will likely be my personal game of the year.
It's great that we still have devs like Remedy and CDPR. I know there are others but those two are big right now, who are still making great games and have great support. Finnish people are also just the best
11:00 - while it is true that the first Alan Wake was quite linear, it isn't necessarily a bad thing. I've re-played the game recently in between some modern games, and the linear game play and story progression felt honestly quite refreshing. Modern games oftentimes contain too much filler content and lack focus as a result.
I'm gonna take a week off work to really immerse myself in this 😁
Alan Wake 2 is literally everything I wanted the first one to be. I’m so glad I pushed through playing the first one to get to play the sequel to appreciate how much they’ve improved on this kind of game
im excited i played alan wake a couple years ago as just a random game I found and was disappointed there was no sequel and then later I played control and the easter eggs to alan wake was shocking and awesome I'm so glad to see that we are really going to get a sequel this massive and ambitious while still looking like the original game I cant wait for the release
This is literally the ''Twin Peaks: The Return'' of games. I hope it does have great success, though i'm a little worried by how little of the game itself they showed.
Sam Lake is awesome. Alan Wake II looks great too.
Yo idc how long it took keep making great games..when I played alan wake that felt like such a blessing I was so hyped for a sequel and we got American nightmare which was also good and now this I can’t be anymore excited this year for games than anything
Can’t wait to play this! Looks so good.
I LOVE remedy games, theyre an awesome studio, I played alan wake on the 360, bought the remaster on ps4 and cant wait for this on ps5!!
13 years? That's impressive
When I played with Saga, there wasn't a moment when I ran, I was always tense from walking through the forest waiting for something. With Alan it was the same thing at the beginning, but the game forces you to run through his parts
Awesome studio, and great games!
I cannot wait to play as Stephen King and Clarice Starling in Twin Peaks
I get the feeling that we might see jesse faden appear as a side mission npc.
He is my favorite writer, I just love his writing style and he always leaves me wanting for more.
Here's hoping for more night spring!
So If Alex Casey is in game, it probably means he's a fictional character written by Alan to help him escape from his nightmare realm.
This looks beyond amazing. Cannot wait
Oooooh, Sam's playing the partner detective! I thought this character was supposed to be Max Payne!
The partner detective is max Payne. But he has a different name Alex Casey because rockstar own max Payne now so they don’t technically have the rights to use the max Payne name. So it’s a little loophole to use max payne
But Sam! I already need the next game! I will gobble up Alan Wake 2 like I did every Remedy game since Max Payne, and I have questions, especially after deep diving through Control... And after Alan Wake 2 I will have more questions... It will be like watching Twin Peaks all over again... SO MUCH looking forward to all the details and mysteries!
I seriously cannot wait to play this game. Fell in love when I was 12 going 13 and still love it to this day. Only wish it was on steam so I can possibly play on the deck
For that game you need a solid pc. Headphones and monitor are preferable too.
@@Kirbydreaming yeah my ignorance really did show when I didn’t look up the specs. My pc alone is only recommended medium settings with dlss for 60. Steam deck will literally explode
I'd love to talk the entire day about Twin Peaks with Sam Lake
I can't wait for this. I just replayed Alan wake and control to 100% and watched several retrospective and more videos I know more about remedies world than most I'm sure of that
Sam Lake is a treasure
Dude put himself in the game. Doesn’t get much better than that.
God, I love Sam Lake.
Wow OG max Payne, feel like he'd cool to work for😅
Can’t wait to go back to Bright Fall
Can't wait to play the game!

He has a great accent, he should go into reading audio books. 😃
A Finnish accent.
i love finnish accents. sounds so cool and alien. i always think of finnish ppl like asians of europe. very kind, cool and a lot of history
It'd make your ears bleed after a few chapters
Sam Lake literally looks the same as 20 years ago lol
Which is great because he needs to be alive at all cost
At last a game that got me so excited to finally buy my PS5!!?
Same here.
Cant wait
Looks awesome, praying for the game to carry the twin peaks vibe ❤
We all know Twin Peaks is for the first game. For this one it they touch the se7en/true detective theme to it.
@@nandasaputra5932 who is we exactly ? Thanks anyway
I’m really excited to see this big world expand. Aren’t they going to bring Control and Alan Wake together somehow?
Have to their tied together FBC knows about bright falls
