      Well done !
The whole getting picked on for your name was an experience that formed your thinking, you turned into positives as a student and doctor.
It’s about time that the name calling gets stopped in its tracks. It’s old. It’s the root cause of sure-to-be problems that bullying causes.
We excuse it by saying kids will be kids. No more. First step is educating kids. Enough.

@caitopotato5519 - If you attend Cornell, the setting is beautiful.
      --------------
I went there once right after the semester ended to see about transferring into their architecture program and was given a tour of the department. The building where all the design cubicles were located was so relatable. There was drafting paper crumpled all over the place, right up to my knees. We had to wade through it like a paper blizzard. There were sleeping bags and pillows left under many of the drafting tables and somebody had scrawled on the wall, "If MLK had attended Cornell, he never would have had a dream!"
      ----------------
I didn't go there, though I wanted to, and since I fit into several of their desired demographics, they wanted me, but it was expensive and so very far from my partner. I would not get home very often.
      ---------------
Architecture is not medicine, true, but the moral of the story is : be prepared for an intense learning experience if you go there. All the best of luck!

A Slovak here. My brother's name is Igor. I've always called him Iggy :-)
Thanks for sharing your story. All my family and teachers discouraged me from going to medical school. Eventually, I ended up in a specialty that was "impossible" to get into. Now I'm on a quest to do another impossible thing :-) I think that people underestimate what they can achieve by simply having a goal and not giving up.

I have lived with Alopecia Universalis for 40+ years. I wore wigs for the first 15+ years.
I've been following you for a while and have been very impressed with you, and your struggle with AU. I can't fathom haters. You are an outstanding human being.
FYI the second time I received a cancer dx I quit wearing wigs. I chose to reinvent myself as 'hairfree' and proud of it. I started to shine. I wear spectacular earrings, a temporary tattoo, glitter, feather earcuffs, wreaths, and sometimes funny or statement hats.
I took back my personal power.
Gary, I see you as someone with a strong sense of self. Haters are broken and somewhat envious or jealous individuals. Don't let them bother you. You do you! ❤❤🎉❤❤

After hearing about everything you went through with your autoimmune hair loss condition, I personally find it even more impressive and admirable to know that at the end of the day, you chose to be the one that can make a major impact and improvement on people’s appearance and life in general.
Instead of being discouraged, jealous or envious of those who are able to have certain things you may not have, you made the decision to rather help those who might experience the same hardships as you did.
Coming back to the comment that was made by said senior surgeon, I would undoubtedly prefer being treated by a surgeon (or any medical professional) that not only has the skills to help me out but also happens to be an expert by experience.

I think what I love about you the most is your honesty and integrity. This is sadly not prevalent in the medical community today. Maybe because of stress, pressure at work, so many factors that stress employees at the expense of the patient. You endeavor to take your time and do your best job at the expense of some profit loss- I applaud your work ethic! Perhaps its a bit of perfectionism. Fortunately you were able to branch out away from the machine and start your own business. The world needs more physicians like you (especially in other specialties)

The fact that you’re so attentive to detail, interested in what you do, and calm is what draws me to your advice and expertise.
My dad is a dentist, and he has a very similar philosophy to you - take your time, allow enough in the bookings to get it right, and make sure you do as good a job as you can. The rushing is built into the practice of medicine in order to offset the overheads of study and surgical facilities etc, so they can make money after all the long build up. My dad is a TERRIBLE businessman, but a phenomenal dentist with a lot of deep knowledge and care - I’m glad to see you have both the qualities of a passionate and considered surgeon, but enough business nous to do things like this UA-cam channel that can help bolster your business. Finding that balance between passion for your craft and putting food on the table is tricky, but I love the approach you’re taking 🙂

I really needed to hear that. I am a premed graduate, and I am currently studying for the MCAT. Someone straight up told me that I can never be a doctor because I am too timid, according to them. Even though it was from a complete stranger, it broke me and made me doubt myself for a while. I am shy and on the introverted side. I have no support of any kind, except the support of my mom and sister. They are supporting me emotionally as much as they can. I will never give up! Thank you for sharing this.

Stress can play a number on us humans.
You're going through an extreme phase right now. And it is possible that your personal response to this kind of pressure is to withdraw into yourself? Some people feel re-energized when they interact with other humans, others feel drained. Neither one is better or worse, it is just the way we are.
So, you do whatever is best for you. Practice self-care and self-awareness, m'okay?

Keep at it! Hopefully you’ll get in somewhere, and there’s no such thing as a “bad medical school” in the US, since they are all heavily regulated, accredited, and have to keep with ongoing standards.
If you don’t get in your first attempt, you have a bunch of options to do to strengthen your application for 2nd attempt, even 3rd attempt. Start with those Student Doctor Network forums for ideas. It’s all dependent on how bad you want to go to medical school. Here’s an extreme story: I coached a friend who had a 2.7 GPA in undergrad (for a good reason - he was in ROTC where you can get energy, focus, and studying hours sucked away from you). He had just gotten out of the Air Force as a pilot, and it had been maybe 12 years since he graduated college, and had since proven himself academically (thus overcoming the question of “if you only got a 2.7, how do you expect to make it through the amount and difficulty of studying and absorbing a med school curriculum”). I didn’t make any phone calls for him, and on his 2nd try, he got into U. Chicago (!) on his own merit.
Whatever you do, don’t give up and apply to chiropractic school, thinking it’s the same thing. It’s not. Another person I coached did exactly that, thinking all doctors are the same. Chiropractic isn’t based on rigorous peer-reviewed literature and is the furthest thing from evidence based. Chiropractors are not integrated into the medical field because of this (unlike osteopathic medicine, dentistry and podiatry, which are), and patient visits are not covered by insurance. A national chiropractic meeting doesn’t have speakers talking about latest scientific discoveries, but instead new ways to bill patients. Chiropractors then compete against each other for patients in a cutthroat way, on top of always having their clinical methods questioned. My friend really regrets making the decision to become a chiropractor now.

    • @rieyuki
      @rieyuki 11 місяців тому +2

As for whoever told you you’re too timid to be a doctor, don’t listen to them. What do they know about being a doctor?
It’s ok to be shy and introverted. Many people, when young, are shy and introverted, even as medical students and beyond.
Being premed can be lonely if none of your friends are premed and can’t relate. But medical students tend to be really close. It’s hard to be a loner, and you will have fellows students and others providing support, rooting for you!

You have a lot of accolades and compliments here. I have been meaning to write you a message, but this video feels like the right one to respond to. You mentioned that you like the teaching aspect of being a doctor, and I appreciate that you do teach through UA-cam. I am a self-taught medical transcriptionist of 32 years. I have spent most of my career transcribing from home, but I did have some years in which I worked at a few hospitals in their pathology department while were stationed in San Diego, some in the basement next to the morgue and some just near the grossing rooms. Let me tell you what! I was never so grateful to have the freedom to go next door and watch the pathologists gross surgical specimens and perform frozen sections. I was finally able to associate the anatomy to what I transcribed throughout the years. They were wonderfully patient in answering my questions (I have never met a doctor who doesn't like to teach). I had never seen a cervix. As I was pregnant, seeing that little funnel made me, as a first-time mom, a wee bit nervous about delivery. When you insert those anatomy charts into your presentation, I really, really appreciate that. Again, from a perspective of only listening to dictated H&P's, discharge summaries, consults, and operative notes, the visuals cement my medical knowledge. Thank you for those explanations! Julie from Central Texas.

I am applying to residencies now and since Step1 went pass/fail, I am stuck with my only score being from Step2, which I also got a mediocre score on. Unfortunately, my academic grades suffered a bit too since I was so focused on extracurricular activities (research, societies, mentorship/leadership, volunteering, etc) I feel devastated by my lack of interviews right now despite my extremely well-rounded application and prior career before med school. You rock Dr Gary! What a lovely story of resilience. Your parents raised you well and since your childhood you were a down to earth and mature kid. As you mentioned, good work ethic, hard work and dedication opened up a lot of doors for you. You had options to go and pursuit a more "money making" approach, but you owned your present at that moment and took risks that were well rewarded. You took them because you trusted in your dedication and willingness to achieve your goals and now here you are.
What a great attitude to see your haters as motivation potential, and have some compassion for them because ignorance brings the worst of us sometimes.

I wouldn't take any comment made about your abilities personally Dr Gary, it's clear as day to see that you are a gentle and compassionate man looking to improve lives. The truth is much more likely that people would like to trust you but are afraid, and not afraid of you but of the question of facing their own fears about their bodies.
People are desperate to believe that surgery will work and yet fixate on searching for any tiny clues, (no matter how preposterous) that it might not, to try to prepare for possible disappointment if surgery does not improve their appearance. It's the same thing as having a fear of rejection.
Us pessimists know this very well lol

absolutely the most accessible and straight talking medical channel on YT. A true expert in his field but explains things in such a relatable and down to earth way. this channel was fundamental in providing me with advice with making some big aesthetic decisions of my own -FINALLY took the plunge with corrective rhinoplasty due to combat sport competition which i had been procrastinating over for years.. Surgery has changed my life, so thank you Gary for all your videos man and keep it up!

I'm so impressed with how well you carried yourself during all the events as you were growing up and am so sorry it happened to you. You seem like a person I would totally trust as a plastic surgeon. I mean not a person that I would probably trust, but definitely trust to do work on me. You seem like a fantastic person and these people who try to bring you down are usually the ones who are jealous or insecure with themselves and stay in their homes and being on the computer and not going outside. Congratulations on all your hard work!!

NO ONE is perfect, but I could tell before learning about your personal stories that you are an honest person with good ethics and integrity. I subscribed because you are a good teacher! I'm learning a lot about procedures I will never do and get a bit of the gossipy part too.😂

what a great video and message. And I couldn't agree more. when I was planning to go to grad school, I had people coming out of the woodwork to tell me not to do it and all the reasons why it was a bad idea. I'm so glad I didn't listen and stuck to my plan because now I'm very successful and comfortable in what I do and very happy with my choices. You really do have to know when to take advice and when to tune out the noise
