    I got the version of this they were selling 10 years ago. That thing is a tank. It's way too heavy for hiking unless you're having multiple people carrying parts of it, but you don't fear anything's going to happen unless the weather gets so bad that you'd worry almost regardless of what tent you're in.
    I've got the REI Flash 2 that currently retails for $350. It weighs less than 2# if you use trekking poles, but the set-up is too involved, and as was said in the vid, if you're not backpacking with it, the OT 2P tent is a solid option. It's better than their other tents as well. There's a reason the 2P always costs in the $45 range while 3P tents run around $30.
    The main downside beside weight is ventilation. The walls just don't have enough mesh in them to really enjoy a cross breeze on a hot day. That said, you can spend $300 on a tent with a similar problem.
    This one is so solid that I've actually passed it down to a nephew at this point. Definitely worth the "investment" if you're not in weather where the evenings are around 70 or warmer.

    novice backpackers here, but this IS our backpacking tent. Love it! Since there are two of us, both larger, not skinny and over 6 foot, we don't want to crawl over each other getting in and out of tent and each of us have our own HUGE vestibule. works great, no leaks etc. Ours is much nicer color.... CHALLENGE... find us an alternative on a beer budget. The weight is not a problem because we split it so is is kinda like 3.2 pound each. light weight stake idea sounds good. anything else? please suggest other options! Thank you and love the channel.

      Hi Lisa. Thanks so much for the kind words. Ozark Trail is an inexpensive brand, but I’ve always had good luck with it. And if it works for you then who cares what others think! When it comes to tents you definitely pay for weight. Swapping out the stakes and only bringing 4 is the easiest weight saver for sure. I think you’re nailing it by splitting the weight when you can. My favorite tent is the Alps Lynx 2 and it’s 2lbs lighter. But if you’re already splitting the weight, so is 1lb less each worth the extra $100 it’s gonna cost you? Likely not. There are a lot of tents out there that use your trekking poles as the posts, but I don’t have personal experience with them. I almost went with the Alps 2 person trail tipi tent bc it’s light at 3.5lbs and only requires your trekking pole and some guy lines. It is a brand i fully trust though so maybe worth checking out?! Thanks again for watching!

      It's tough. I'd say that the next price point you run into for a 2P tent is roughly $120. I don't think the Coleman's, Eurekas, etc., at other price points in between are much of an improvement over the OT tent except maybe in the area of a little weight and better ventilation because there is more mesh in the walls. I'd really say that Kelty tents are that next step up. Kind of the low end of the mid-range stuff? I've got one of those as well and I like it as much as the OT.
      Actually, if you're talking a beer budget, I'm actually looking to upgrade to a different Kelty. The one I have is the Kelty Salida 2. Look up the specs and such and let me know if you'd be interested. I think it was about $150 when I bought it for my trip up Mount Whitney, but I'm sure I can go less than half of that to sell it used.

    From video the tent looks like it the bottom of tent is attached to sides at ground level and not up the sides like other tents do “ like up to 3”-4”. Has anybody found this to be a problem in rainy weather.?

    • @PerformanceOutdoor
      @PerformanceOutdoor  3 роки тому

      You are correct, it's not the "tub style" wall where the bottom wraps up the sides. I have only used this in fair weather so I can't confirm how well it holds up in heavy rain. I'd say your concerns are valid.

      @@PerformanceOutdoor very welcome. What would you recommend for cheapest backpacking tent? I have found River country products trekking Pole tent to be around $60 and only weigh a few pounds. Never used a trekking pole tent before.

    • @PerformanceOutdoor
      @PerformanceOutdoor  3 роки тому +1

      I’ve never used a trekking pole tent either actually. More often than not if I’m going out solo, or in a group where everyone has their own sleep arrangements, I hammock camp. However last year I bought the Alps Mountaineering Lynx 2 man tent and love it. They also make a 1 man tent for around $130 and it weighs 3lbs. I love the Alps Lynx tent. When it comes to the “Big 3” (tent, sleeping bag and pack) I always try to balance price and durability. For the money, I feel like the Alps tent is great. Solid design and construction. So many good options out there but this is the one I have the most experience with.

    I have been reading a lot about bathtub floor in tents. Does this tent have that and is that something I need to worry about with rain?

    • @PerformanceOutdoor
      @PerformanceOutdoor  3 роки тому +1

      Hey there Ryan! No this tent does not have the bathtub floor, there the floors are more waterproof and curl up slightly on the sides. It does have more of a tarp type floor and I would imagine is somewhat water proof, and more durable, but I wouldn’t rely on it if I knew I was going to be camping in heavy weather. I’ve never had a bathtub floor tent myself. Usually good campsite scouting, and putting yourself in a spot where the water is less likely to pool is key. That being said, I would still use a ground tarp with this tent personally. I have one from Wise Owl that I really like and showed in my Alps Lynx review. I like ground tarps for extra waterproofing and preserving the floor of the tent. Hope that helps! Stay well.

      Thanks for the reply. I am going to the boundary waters this week and it is supposed to rain every day. I was thinking f picking this one up or using my Eureka Tetragon 2 (an older model) it has the bathtub floor but doesn’t have a vestibule. I am looking for advice on which I should bring. Don’t want to end up wet.

    • @PerformanceOutdoor
      @PerformanceOutdoor  3 роки тому

      I haven’t ever used the Eureka, but I will say I really like the vestibules. The one thing though is that if it rains a lot the ground under the vestibule can get wet if water pools around the outside of the rain cover. Having a ground tarp that extends beyond the inner walls but not past the rain cover is a good setup. This way you have double layer ground protection and the ground under the vestibules stays dry. I will say though I haven’t used this tent in heavy rain. I did use my Alps Lynx (which is similar) under heavy rain with this setup and it worked well.

    Every Ozark Trail tent that I've ever owned leaked. We stopped buying them. Have they improved on their quality?

    • @PerformanceOutdoor
      @PerformanceOutdoor  3 роки тому

      Hey Flowerchild. So I’m not sure if you have bad luck or if I have just had good luck, but I’ve owned Ozark Trail tents for years and never had leak issues. I haven’t had this 2 person tent in extreme weather yet, other than my pressure washer test, so I can’t say definitively.

    • @louiewatson9389

      If you use seam sealer and spray with a water repellent spray they'll never leak. I have a Ozark trail tent and have used it for years and only had to do this once and never had a leak.

      The 2P tent has always been an outlier to me. IDK if the current model is as good as the one I bought a decade ago, but there's a reason it's always about $45, when the 3P and other OT tents run about $35 or less.

    Thx for the review. Did you really complain about the color of the poles on a $45 tent? Lol. Gosh....that's kind of out there...but i hate orange too. Anyway you are missing the function of that 3rd pole that you think isn't so necessary. That "unnecessary " pole is what makes this tent brilliant. It's one of the few tents in this style that has a sideways pole that is wider than the footprint. Obviously this pole makes the interior space wider but it's true function is to provide a large overhang for the rainfly where you can enter and exit the tent in hard rain and not have rain come into the tent. In fact you can leave the vestibule open during rain and enjoy the ventilation and view without soaking the interior. I think it's brilliant.
    I can buy any tent...and have. This one is a serious contender as it outperforms many tents at much higher price points. No, it's not a backpacking tent but car camping, definitely.

    • @PerformanceOutdoor
      @PerformanceOutdoor  2 роки тому +1

      I definitely think it’s a fine car camping tent. I have similar tents, such as the Alps Lynx 2 that doesn’t have the lateral top pole and there is still a good overhang for the rain fly. I can’t really complain much about a $45 tent, it’s fine, and my go to tent for my kids! Thanks for the feedback!
