I had the pleasure of using a vintage 149 from the 50's last year, with an OM nib & silver rings either side of the gold cap ring which just looked gorgeous. The nib was phenomenal, I wish so much I could've kept it forever.
Oh man a vintage MB like that must write so nice. Same goes for older Pelikans and others. Whenever I see a vintage MB 149 pop up for sale and I see the price..... sigh
When I eventually pull the trigger on a 149 it's going to be the rose gold version. I'm not huge on black and gold, but black and Rose gold just pops for me. The Aurora 88 Satin has rose gold with a matte black look to it almost like a homo sapiens. It's gorgeous!
@@Doodlebud There is a pen that I'm eyeing in the future that hasn't hit the market yet that has rose gold trim. I'm pretty sure I'm buying it already, but You never know what else may pop up in the mean time.
I prefer the gold 2 tone nib, but the rose gold looks good. Love that pen, soon to be in my collection also. I have the Mont Blanc 220 (Makrolon) and the 221p, I really love the design of this nibs (think people called them "wing design".... they look elegant and write super smooth for being EF.
I haven't quite decided if I'm going to go on the hunt for a 146 yet. I've always been into fine nibbed pens, but have been coming around to using broad/stub/flex nibs more often, and now oblique is on the radar!!
Yeah, not a gold guy. I've had an aversion to the stuff since way back. Nickel, silver, chrome is my happy place. Having said that, I do have a few gold nibs both vintage and new because...Hey, ya just gotta have that 1958 Pelikan 400NN with the OM goodness. Or that Pilot 823. But given my druthers, whenever possible, I like that gold dipped in a nice layer of rhodium. What do they call that, white gold? Yeah probably. That's my shade of gold...silver.
My favorite was the 2-tone regular gold. As much as I love those gold, this wasn't doing it for me. I could tell that the camera wasn't showing off the color as well as you could see it in person though.
I saw a video of a person using some liquid chemical to fix a broken piece of a pen. He explained that the chemical is better for plastic and acrylic because it fuses at the microscopic level the crack in the plastic, cyanoacrylate just glues the part.
I don't know if it's the same, but plastic models often uses a glue that's said to fuse the parts together (think of Airfix aircraft models and the like). It's very strong, and they're all acrylic plastics so that might work.
Hi DB! Man, that 146 is a nice pen! I like the rose gold trim better on pens when available! I have at least one that has that finish and is NICE! Kind of like the paper in the Lochby Field Journal, I have the lined notebook in mine. Have a great weekend!
I guess that 'fit my hand' is the wrong way to say it. How the pen fits my 'fingers' while writing is probably the best way to judge a pen. The pen that I have that fits my fingers the best while writing is my Pilot Custom Heritage 912. So, the Montblanc 146 would probably be best for me.
@@Doodlebud Yeah. I looked into the section sizes and the 149 is a tad larger than my Jinhao X159 and the 146 is a tad larger than my Pilot Custom Heritage 912. My fingers love the Pilot 912 the best, so the 146 sounds like the perfect size for me.
That's a very pretty pen, but the Aurora is the one I'd take from you. Thanks for another enjoyable post. BTW, it's van dee-man's land (after Anthony van Dieman).
That nib is quite something. Never heard of the van Dieman's ink brand -- will have to check it out if it is available here in Belgium. As to your Dutch pronunciation ... Van Heemskerck en Zeehaen are not the easiest words to pronounce 🙈
I think that one is from before the brass filler threads, so it's worth fixing. Brass filler threads are obviously nice in some respects, but they change the balance of the pen for the worse, IMHO. The section should be relatively easy to fix on that pen since the grip section itself is just a sleeve that doesn't bear much stress. I remember when I used to restore much older vintage pens, a section crack was pretty much a disaster that initiated a search for a replacement section.
I still think I like the look of the standard nib more. But a signature pen has been an interesting idea. I have too many pens to dedicate one lol. Can't make up my mind
I have the Pixel Pro 8 and the white balance can be adjusted but on it's own it seems to be fine. Rose gold is stunning. The Pelikan nib looks awesome and probably would choose that. Also the design on the nib is more interesting. Unfortunately the Montblanc design has been imitated so often, I appreciate the Souveran for being different. Have you tried the Platinum President? About the same size as the 146 and the nib is fabulous. It is not a piston filler but also it is about 6X less in cost.
@Doodlebud well, hell, now I'm embarrassed! I follow you very closely, but apparently, that one slid under the radar. Thanks for the link, and thank you for the always amazing content!
Guess it depends on the specific alloy blend a company does. This one is 14K versus other rose gold can be 18K so the amount of copper will change the final look
@@Doodlebud amazing, didn't think you would answer a question not related to fountain pens either lol. But thank you that should improve quality for me and my channel. Btw love your content. The tipping is Iridium but the full nibs aren't. Although there are newer alloys that work just as well and are lower cost than Iridium. Not sure how much Iridium is actually in modern day tipping it any at all
@@Doodlebud Oh good. Iridium is the rarest metal and very, VERY expensive. It’s bad for the environment and better used as a catalyst so I’m glad there’s newer alloys to substitute.
Is it the lighting or my imagination, or is the rose gold showing through some of the white metal on that nib? Should it not be thick enough to stand up to occasional polishing? For my taste, honestly, the MB nibs are not as good-looking as the contenders in this shoot-out. Decorative elements on the Visconti are just artistic, and the loops on the Pelikan are so cool.
I still love that two tone Pelikan nib better. Birds are better than a random mountain height scribbled on. But I do like the MB rose gold two tone better than the Visconti because the colours look better on the rose gold.

A rose gold that is not just pink? I like it!
I have a 1980s vintage MB146 with a springy OBB nib. One of my favourite pens, still *just* useable as an everyday writer on the forms at work.
Sounds like a fantastic nib!
