Very interesting tactic. The raccoon opts to hug the railing and shimmy in order to only allow the cat to strike its back and top, while being able to continue pushing forward in order to force the cat up and away from the food that it wanted. It made itself into a wedge.

@@walterschneider8033 This cat was pawing on the head, and almost got him in the eye, but this raccoon was desperate for food. Raccoons are tough animals with thick fur and hide, so you are right, the cats claws would have little effect on body or head strikes. The eyes and nose would be the most effective and sensitive areas for a cat to strike the raccoon.
I have an 11 pound female all white cat who did exactly that to a much larger male raccoon a couple years back. This raccoon was not starving. He was probably a 20 - 30 pound animal feeding out of local dumpsters and such. I watched the entire encounter from a window facing the backyard.
Our two cats were both relaxing in the yard watching the raccoon digging around in the grass for a while. Both of them had the higher ground advantage. Cali, the cat in my profile pic was up on a wood pile, and Courtney, the bigger white cat was in a yard chair.
At one point the raccoon got curious and approached Courtney. She remained relaxed until he went under the chair. At that point, she stood up and began showing a more defensive / aggressive posture. The coon then meandered back to the front side of the chair, placed his paws onto the front of the seat and tried to sniff Courtney. She let out a growl that sounded like a bobcat and struck him once right in the nose. He spun around and fled the yard as fast as he could with Courtney right on his tail and they both went out of sight.
I went out there to be sure the cat would be safe, but it all happened way too fast. In a little while Courtney returned, but that raccoon never has come back to this yard. There are much safer places for him to find a meal. My guess is that having the higher ground advantage, and getting the coon with a powerful strike in his most sensitive area - his nose, was what led to this outcome. Plus, as i said earlier, this raccoon was huge, but not desperate for food.

@@jerrywoods4066 True. It always depends on the individual animals involved and the situation. My cat defeated a much larger raccoon because of those two things. My cat is very territorial over her space, and will be fiercely aggressive to defend her space in the house and yard. The raccoon she faced was not starving, nor was it protecting it's young.
I have seen a video where a female raccoon fought off and chased away a young male bobcat that was too close to her nest of babies for comfort. That is where the 'situation' and the 'individual animal' comes in. If that was an older, bigger, hungry and more experienced bobcat, the female raccoon and her young could have been on the menu.

This raccoon’s legs are wet and she was likely either drinking water or was dipping her hands in to soften their paw pads. They will sometimes get in a dish or other water source and submerge all four feet.
Typically one of the rabies symptoms presents as foaming at the mouth, and it’s caused by the inability to swallow. This raccoon can swallow quite well. lol

But she is very territorial, and more likely to be aggressive with larger animals in the house or yard. I have had to stop her at least three times from attacking leashed dogs walking by the house. She would flee from a real aggressive dog, but if the animal shows any timidness at all, she is likely to go into full on attack mode. She even fights off local tom cats that try to wander through the yard. I have had to go out there to break up a few of those standoffs as well.

I love cats to death (way more than dogs), have always owned them, would've been turned off emphatically had I believed the cat to be in danger. I'm not saying the raccoon couldn't have harmed the cat, but I don't believe it wanted to get scratched up & bitten just to win a fight, as all it really was wanting was some clean food it saw, that that cat gets all the time anyways. And being that a spontaneous happening such as that costs the owners literally pennies, I don't see reason to hyperventilate? animal is bitten, or scratched by a wild animal, it is automatically classified as having
rabies. In my older videos, I have two rabid cats that was euthanized by the veterinarian
after animal control picked them both up, and were observed. A rabies declaration was
issued. The black cat had a racoon claw swipe on its forehead with fur missing. Both cats

They are not cute animals. My barn cat has been close to death twice due to raccoon attacks, both times requiring vet visits, so I started stepping in and evened up the score.
Human 3, raccoons 0. Plenty of wild country out there for them. If they want to attack my cat it will cost them.

Racoons are smarter than cats and this one had some practical knowledge. It hugged the railing because it knew a cat's strategy is always to knocks things down!

No way would I of been filming my cat with a raccoon wanting to eat the cat food. Raccoons are very territorial and will kill a cat over food when they are hungry. Who ever filmed this your lucky your cat did not get hurt bad or killed.

I was thinking the same thing exactly-who just films their cat being threatened by a raccoon (thankfully it didn't get worse) they have MANY diseases & can kill your cat. That's just sad & wrong on a few levels-like why would you Let it eat the cats food instead of scaring it off-now it knows where to come & easily get food w no human to deal w & your cat will be in danger every time-way to be there & help your cat in a dangerous situation there pal 👏🤬😼

Raccoons are scavengers and farmers in WI consider them a nuisance. I was told that if I saw one on the road to run it over. Too many of them cause a lot of damage. They are very good eating. So if the prices get too high in the grocery store, you may want to hunt them. Cute yes but they also carry rabies. If you see one out through the day, they may have rabies. Raccoons are normally nocturnal.
This one was after the cat food.

This content is uncomfortable! I fear for cat's safety. Shoo away coons! Discourage their presence! Keep pet food away from them! Rabies is highly contagious & common in coons. Also the strain of worms (Baylisascaris) that 60-95% of them carry have eggs that are nearly indestructible, stick to everything (including pet's paws) & are contagious to humans. Raccoon urine can contain harmful diseases that can kill or make pets seriously ill. Leptospirosis (also contagious to humans) is one such nasty illness. Discourage raccoons near your home! Dogs & cats lick their paws; every single thing they walk thru is lapped up by their tongue. This is so irresponsible!
