My late husband was born and raised in the general area. The town was originally called Berwyn. Gene Autry bought a big ranch west of town in 1941 and the town was renamed Gene Autry in his honor. I really enjoyed the video and seeing the museum again as it has been several years since we've been back.
Wow. Talk about a blast from the past. When I was a kid I'd rush home from school to see The Lone Ranger on TV. Roy Rogers and Dale Evans had a show on Saturday mornings, right after the cartoons. When it was over Sky King came on, but I was never big on Sky King. Fury, a show about a lack stallion, was also on Saturday mornings. I also remember a Gene Autry TV show, again in the early 1960s, but I'm thinking it was also on the weekdays. Probably on the same channel as The Lone Ranger. I'm thinking The Lone Ranger was after Gene Autry. Funny how I can remember all that stuff yet I have no idea why I came into the kitchen.
I used to listen to Gene Autry on the radio and my Mom took me to see him and his horse, Champion at the old Hippodrome theater in Baltimore. I think he wrote “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.” Thanks, Russ!
I remember we had a Christmas songs album back in the early 1970s, Gene Autry was one of the singers. My late father's favorite Gene Autry song was "You are the only star in my blue heaven".
Hey Russ! I loved the Gene Autry Museum. I remember watching Aurty, Roy Rogers and others back when I was a kid, 65 years ago. I still love their old shows and movies. Good entertainment! I've never been to this part of Oklahoma. Thanks for tour! take care and safe driving.
Hello Russ ! Great to be back. When I cross Oklahoma, I always stop at Will Rogers Archway on Interstate-44, North of Tulsa. Will once said "I never met a man I didn't like". The Archway affords beautiful views on the highway and on the scenery around in this "flatland". I also stopped at the "Roy Rodgers Museum" near Victorville, California. It is not really very far from the Arizona Stateline, maybe you could visit it next winter on a day trip. Nice video as always ! RICHARD
Thanks Russ! When visiting my wife's family in Oklahoma City I drove there and the museum was closed. So, thanks to you, I finally get to see what is there! Stay safe!
Thanks for sharing your visit to the Gene Autry Museum! I always wanted to visit when i lived in Oklahoma and now really regret that I never made it there. I did, however, get to visit the smaller Tom Mix Museum in Dewey, OK. Tom was also famous for being in movies. Since the museum included horses, i hope they had photos of Mr. Ed who is buried on a private farm near Tahlequah, OK.
When he was working as a telegraph operator, he worked for my great uncle in north east Oklahoma who was station master. Will Rogers saw him performing and recommended he make a living out of it.
How cool to see all those cool pics of the oldies but goodies. I had Roy Roger's belt w secret compartment. A Hopalong Cassidy ring among other stuff. Lol. Gene Autry was worth 500 million at the time of his passing. Thanks, Russ.
That was interesting! In the 40's I was in elementary school in a small town of Tioga, ND, population about 300. The city hall that was used for all civic events, and dances, was also the theater. I watched a lot of those old black and white western movies. When color came in it made it more interesting. There was always a cartoon and a news reel before the movie. I didn't see a picture of Audie Murphy, who became a western movie star after winning the Medal of Honor in WW II. So he had the moxie to be an action hero without needing a stunt double. Autry made enough money singing and acting to buy the Angels of the American League in 1960, when they were still in Anaheim. After he died in 1998, his second wife, Jackie continued to own the Angels until 1999, when she sold them to the Walt Disney Company. Jackie continued to go to Angel games until the won a World Series in 2002 and for sometime after. She is still living. Autry never had any children by either of his wives.
That was fantastic! We enjoyed seeing all the stars and performers. Thank You. We would not have seen the great Western Legends and Enjoyed seeing them again.
Thx, you cleared up what I had miss understood. I thought the Gene Autry Museum was in L.A. Looked like a nice walk into one's past with all that historical memorabilia. ;)
Grew up right in front of the school and attended from 1956-68 and was the last student to get a diploma from high school. The airport was an actual Air Force base until 1957. I wrote a book about growing up in Gene Autry, sold on Amazon. Gene Autry, Oklahoma A Lifetime of Memories.
CHAPS/Guitars are Awesome; My DAD grew up with all these 'cowboys'..... [& YES, MY DAD was A REAL COWBOY.....lol; THANK U, RUSS; LUV THIS!!! AMAZING ERA!
@10:17. Sterling Holloway also did voice acting for The Walt Disney Company, playing Mr. Stork in Dumbo, Adult Flower in Bambi, the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland, Kaa in The Jungle Book, Roquefort the Mouse in The Aristocats, and the title character in Winnie the Pooh( the many adventures of Winnie the Pooh), among many others.
Awesome video thank you! You make me feel better about myself after watching this. I'm not the only one that misses my turn, whew, I thought I might be getting dementia 😂 love your video.
I live about one hour from the museum. I've lived here my whole life and still haven't made it over to the museum yet. Thank you Rusty Incase I don't make it there 🤠🇺🇸,😂😂 10:44
Russ, I don't know if you noticed, but the museum was an old school (boarded up area where AC units were once windows) & the gym was next to the school building. I don't know this as fact, but it looks too much like the schools back in Arkansas. Also, I think there was an FFA/Ag shop out back. Btw, I grew up on Roy & Gene songs & westerns.
Originally named Berwyn before they changed the name to Gene Autry, my Grandmother, Great Grandparents and Great Great Grandparents were from Gene Autry Oklahoma
More interesting fact, he only stayed in that town for a short time because of WW2 , also he is the only person to have 5 stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
WE LOVE RVerTV - BEST TV ON UA-cam. Thank you Russ.🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠
Worked at car wash in 70s in Palm Springs, Gene would come in often

Thanks for the visit to the Gene Autry Museum. Very interesting.
I get the distinct feeling that you were the only visitor to the museum that day.
Maybe one of the last. The sign on I-35 says it is closed, maybe permanently.
Sad.
Very nice find Russ. Thank you.

I'm more of a Hopalong Cassidy fan, but that museum looks like a fun place to visit. Thanks, Russ.
It's out in the wilderness. It's closed most of the time.

Great memories... recognized most of the names & photos.. growing up with guns to shoot the bad guys.
no mention of his radio, tv empire and contribution to baseball and his ownership of the LA Angels. I guess it was just a cowboy museum.
Have a safe drive on the way home!

Terrain starting to flatten out…..East and West OK vastly different
lol...does the westerly side of the state have "hills"?!!!!
That's a lot of memorabilia. I would think his estate donated a good amount.
Hi Rus. I just arrived to Quartzite. Are you I. Town this weekend? Would love to meet you. I’m staying across from the game store.
In 1998, the Gene Autry Estate was worth $320MM. Not bad for a Singing Cowboy.
Originally named Berwyn before they changed the name to Gene Autry, my Grandmother, Great Grandparents and Great Great Grandparents were from Gene Autry Oklahoma
I have the same train whistle ring😲🤣
Welcome to Texas!
I heard Texas sucks. The museum is in dumpy Oklahoma.
Omygosh I must be old because I know all these names of old western actors you’re calling out😅
We're is Clint Eastwood At Good Bad And The Ugly
More interesting fact, he only stayed in that town for a short time because of WW2 , also he is the only person to have 5 stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Tioga, Texas is his birth place.
Kinda sad 2-3 visitors a day at the museum…..location off the beaten path
