Wow - Pete, honestly you've opened up my world. I've never seen results so quickly on my mixes than after applying your tips are tricks. I composer orchestral film music, but I've recently gone into theatre and am creating a concept album. Because the singers are fantastic West-End stars, I thought it would be easy and wouldn't have to play with the vocals too much. In truth, I was struggling to ballance the vocals are make them pop, but then I saw your video on vocal compression which was incredible...and now adding in these effects, the vocals have opened up so much. I usually don't like hearing delays in recordings, and when you listen to them in solo, they seems over the top. But the incredible thing is, in the mix you barely even hear them, but they warm up the vocals, add richness and make them wider. Unbelievable work Pete - I don't trust many teachers on UA-cam, I usually look for free masterclasses, but you are a phenomenal producer. Thank you so much and keep up the great work!
Joseph Purdue Hey thanks a bunch for the kind words, Joseph! I really appreciate them. Very happy to help and I’m glad you’ve heard/seen a big improvement in your mixes 🤙🏻😊 Always exciting putting in the hard work and getting results. Cheers! 😄
I watch a lot of mixing tutorials on YT Pete, and your method is one of the best. Love the way you move it along. Keep up the great work--it's very helpful.
TK Goldman its not his method. he basically repeats what cla says in his mixing with slate plugins tutorial. some of the phrases are from steven slates rundown of this same mixing tutorial, word by word.
+kontemplate ... method, not content, is what I'm referring to. Pete's method on all his tutorials is great, especially compared to most out there. He keeps it moving and he knows what most of us are looking for in terms of his teaching method. As for the content, we all repeat what we learn from our masters.
+TK Goldman Thanks for understanding my point here, TK... You're spot on. What most people don't realize is everything CLA's learned (and teaches/preaches) was from his revered mentor Bob Clearmountain. Life's one big learning trip ;-)
As I responded to you on your last comment, I in no way pass this off as MINE. Thats why I call it "the CLA...." not "The Pete...."... As I explained previously "I've seen Chris mix in a variety of different situations... There isn't only one place where Chris goes into depth on his mix techniques (MWTM, etc). Steven Slate is a friend of mine. He and I discussed some ways to help promo his Audio Legends course as you're seeing in this snippet which is a very small sample of what you paid 50 quid for. I'm happy to hear you bought it as Steven and CLA bring you hours of wonderful teaching that far exceeds the 50 quid for the course"
I love the fact that you're using stock plug-ins as well to re-create how you do the fx with the other plug-ins. Not many people do that and it sometimes can be a bit confusing for people to understand on their own plug-ins if they have no visual tutorial being done on something that they actually have. Great video man!
+ShyyneParadise I'm glad you enjoyed the demo w the stock plugins! I always try and break it down to basics when i can to prove that its not the plugins you use that matter, but rather the techniques and application behind them. Thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed the vid :-)
Pre delay pushes the verb back off the initial attack of the vocal. It really clears up the verb while making it thicker with more depth . This CLA method is taking from the Abby Road Reverb trick. I like sidechaining filters into a plate or spring reverb for sure. Filters are fun too.......... I enjoy your videos keep it up.
Haha!!!!!! at the end you reference John Lennon pretty cool. I dig your setup. You have exactly what i want. I always liked the 737 on my voice The Focusrite ISA has been on the list for years and of the course the 1073 and and Apollo's. I'll get there eventually. I just got back into the game in the last six months.......
Stoked to hear you're enjoying the vids, Kris! And yes, I agree about CLA and Abbey Road. Everyone learns or borrows ideas from others and finds ways to use and implement them into their own sound... :)
Very cool to hear that you just got back into the game a few months ago! Welcome back! Also nice to hear you like my setup :-) I absolutely adore my 1073's and the ISA-428 pre-pack. The Apollo's are OK... the converters are kinda "meh" but I'm running through a Dangerous DAC so that helps. Really love the LA-610 MkII's as well. As for the Avalon, you can have it, haha! I literally never use it... Just not my thing. I've probably had the thing on for 4 hours total. Super minty fresh. If you ever want it its all yours! ;-)
I'll take if you wanna give it to me lol. I'm a starving artist so I cant buy it right now. I'll hit you up down the road when the timing is right. I'm working on landing my first real studio job. I passed the interview I just gotta send them few mixes and show them what i can do in audition type setting. I'm excited, so ready to be doing this all day and night and support myself with it.
This couldn't have come at a better time! Literally only invested in the Audio Legends course 2 days ago, and his stereo vocal delay settings were confusing me a bit because of how both him and Steven Slate described it!
Hey Adam! Hope you're well... Im glad to hear this vid clarified some difficulties you were having following the Audio Legends course! Let me know if you have any further questions :-)
I was using slap delay and stereo delay before reverb, on sends, in cubase. I didn't know you can use slap after delay and plate. I'm gonna try this. big thanks from Manchester, England. it really sounds great when you mix. let me see what I can do... subscribed!
Actually. CLA mention this in almost every interviews. You can read some SOS, and on Waves Audio site, you can even see some of his plans for the CLA Signature Seies. Look at his sketch plans for the CLA-Vocals. Same thing but he uses a 1/4 note 1/8 note config. No 10 sec difference between first and second delay. Actually CLA has absolutely no mixing secrets. You can use all his techniques step by step, mixing the same song, with CLA next to you. Both of you are exactly doing all the same moves on all effects, automation...... The CLA same mix as yours, would amazingly sound 100 times better. But how and why, has more to do with metaphysics than actual mixing. As he explained, he mixes to WIN ! And he never loses. He's a Mixing-soldier, going for the all medals record. ;-) Just listen to him speak, and he'll energize you for months !!!!
Really great tips. Thank you Seems you got the inside scoop... Is there any way you could just do a full CLA series? I'm thinking maybe 20-30 vids total.😁
The EchoBoy has a "offset" knob on the tweak section which automatically does the adding-milliseconds-to-one-side thing. That way you don't need to mess with the ms all the time and just leave it at 1/4.
Actually the 1/4 note delay works better if you advance the left side 15ms and delay the right side 15ms- In CLA's setting you have image problems (Haas effect)
Hi there, great video. So how do you go about this? Is it a vocal track with a different send to each plugin or is it send to the reverb, from there to stereo delay and from there to the mono delay?
Hey Salas! I have and use the Sonarworks SOMETIMES... Im not a big "mix on headphones" guy... I'll use my headphones as another means of referencing here and there. When I do, sometimes I'll throw the Sonorworks on... My only beef w Sonarworks and other speaker/headphone calibration software is that you're not REALLY learning your headphones/speakers... Its nice in your studio, but I personally want to be able to know my HD650's so well that I can grab a pair anywhere in the world and mix on them if I have to. Same thing w getting to know your speakers. Its not important WHAT speakers you use but rather HOW WELL you know them. I use and love and know my Dynaudio's. Jacquire King mixes on KRK Rokit 6's. Last time I checked his Grammy collection was doing okay ;-) Mix translation through knowing your speakers and headphones is the most imperative thing! :-)
Thanks a lot for replying Pete, this help me a lot deciding what to do with my HD650's I just got them like 2 days ago, I'm going to learn them very well and not depend so much on Sonarworks. Love your content!
D-verb is the reverb plugin you use at 6:21. I have noticed that, when inserting this plugin, the input fader at the left defaults to -4dB. Any idea why?
Ohhhh, my bad. I think that's what D-Verb defaults to when i open the plugin for me... Or the other possibility is I turned it down... i can't remember exactly. i did this over 6 months ago. The only thing that lowering the input fader of D-Verb would do it send less level to the plugin. I wouldnt worry about that as its a mix by mix scenario. Hope that helps!
Hey, you mentioned putting EQ before reverb. I just came here to say that the order of EQ and reverb doesn't make a difference. It's the exact same thing. Just thought you should know. Keep up the good work. I really enjoy your videos. Thanks
Paco Maco Hey Paco. Thanks for the comment. It actually does make a difference whether you put an eq first or after a reverb (not arguing here... just sharing what I know to be true... if you feel differently about it that's fine... all love here). The way it's different is that if you cut or boost frequencies going into the reverb you're then defining the reverb sound. If you eq after the reverb you're eq'ing the combined tone of the reverb unit and the signal you're sending through it. That's why a lot of reverb units have filters on them. It's a subtle thing but you can hear it well if you're doing extreme boosts or cuts pre and/or post EQ. Every different reverb plugin imparts its own tonality on a signal especially if it contains signal coloring things like transformers, etc. Hope that makes sense 😊✌️️
It makes a lot of sense to mix the way that you described in a workflow sense. we often want to eq the reverb send separately from the main vocal. But its worth saying that from a technical perspective Paco Marco is correct. He's referring to the fact that both reverb and eq are linear processes. so order has no effect on the end result. (assuming the effects are linear, eg no pitch shifting/distortion) its not critical knowledge. but it is good for audio engineers to understand some DSP fundamentals I think! it helps us dispel untrue myths that can mislead people

Haha. No worries. I lose myself a bit sometimes ;-) No, I'm not using the D-Verb w the Vintage Verb... I'm simply showing how I'd recreate the vocal effects chain using the stock Pro Tools plugins for anyone who doesn't own these same plugins. They're both separate :-)
I've seen Chris mix in a variety of different situations... There isn't only one place where Chris goes into depth on his mix techniques (MWTM, etc). Steven Slate is a friend of mine. hey brother can you tell me which vocal compression video you are talking about?
I watch a lot of mixing tutorials on YT Pete, and your method is one of the best. Love the way you move it along. Keep up the great work--it's very helpful.

good info and easy to follow. thanks for this!
My pleasure! :-)
Love it! I have the CLA Signature series, but prefer knowing how to do things using basic building blocks.
Absolutely, Dan! Knowing how to get the sounds all those signature plugins create is a crucial part of understanding mixing :-) Thanks for watching!
Great tutorial! I use something similar-ish lol. Gonna give this one a go. Thanks dude!
Hey Derek! Its my pleasure... Very cool to hear you use something similar! All the best! :-)
Damn... What a great channel. I hope you'll come back to making videos.
This was kick ass man! I appreciate this.
My pleasure, Francisco! :-)

"light slips through the cracks" "sss... sss... sss... sss..." "Without a sssound..." "sss.... sss... sss... sss..."
great secrets from pros .. thanks Pete. will use it for sure.. magic numbers..166 - sound of 70s
My pleasure, Alex! If 166ms is good enough for John Lennon, its good enough for me, haha! Cheers :-)

With the Echo Boy you can tweak the offset between left and right delay within the tweak menu.
Great video this info helps a lot to improve my vocals on recordings.
Hey Joe! I'm really stoked to hear this has helped your vocals sound better! :-)
The EchoBoy has a "offset" knob on the tweak section which automatically does the adding-milliseconds-to-one-side thing. That way you don't need to mess with the ms all the time and just leave it at 1/4.
like for 151.53 Pre-Delay..
HAHA!
Great tips and information here!
great.video..it.has.helped.me.a.lot.thank.you.
jimmy lennon Cheers, Jimmy! 🤙😊
Question: Doesn’t tempo of the track have a lot to do with the delay speed?
Actually the 1/4 note delay works better if you advance the left side 15ms and delay the right side 15ms- In CLA's setting you have image problems (Haas effect)
sounds great man. ty
Hi there, great video.

Excellent tutorial man thank you!
Great thanks for sharing !
My pleasure :-)
What was that mic.. 🔥
Yep. Good stuff. Thanks!
Cheers! :-)
hi Pete, by any chance are you using sonarworks when using headphones (hd650's)
Hey Salas! I have and use the Sonarworks SOMETIMES... Im not a big "mix on headphones" guy... I'll use my headphones as another means of referencing here and there. Exactly my thought after doing individual calibration for my HD650 and using it for 6 months.
No problem brother!
:-)
great !
CLA might have gone with 1/8 note delay for this song.
thank bro for sharing
Lobster through the cracks!!!
Do you know why the D-verb begins with the input fader down -4dB?
Not sure what you mean by D-Verb? - Pete
D-verb is the reverb plugin you use at 6:21. I have noticed that, when inserting this plugin, the input fader at the left defaults to -4dB. Any idea why?

It always defaults to -4 for me. Can't figure out why Avid chose that for a default. We will never know!
You know what I say.... if it sounds good, it is good! Sometimes you just gotta roll with it ;-) Cheers, Adam!
Hey, you mentioned putting EQ before reverb. I just came here to say that the order of EQ and reverb doesn't make a difference. It's the exact same thing. Just thought you should know. Keep up the good work. I really enjoy your videos. Thanks

Of course, Asif. Please send me an email at "pete@mixbetternow.com". Cheers!
dont you feel bad Pete about reseling th same paterns from mix with cla masterclass? at theend of the day some of us paid 50 quid for it....
