    "In this video we're going to be taking a look at how to "Brauerize" your lead vocals! Michael Brauer is a Grammy Winning mix engineer who works off of a multi-buss system... He uses compression unlike many other mixers in that he specifically chooses what compressors to use based on how they will tonally affect the audio (in addition to solely compressing). He uses a combination of FIVE different compressors set up as send and returns to blend into his lead vocals. The results is huge sounding, warm, fat, and punchy vocals like you've never heard before. It's a little in depth and advanced, but if you hang with me all the way through this video, I promise you'll never compress your lead vocals the same way ever again...." - Pete

    I know it's an old video, but here's a little tip: You can set the main vocal channel to have no output, and maybe even split off the compressor that's on the main vocal channel to an additional send track. This way you can ride the main vocal channel into the various compressors without hearing any output gain increase on the main vocal channel...just a gain increase as a result of your various input gains into the various compressors.
    Also, I don't remember if he's doing this in this video, but certainly you can group the compressor channels at the very end so you can ride your overall vocal level output.

    Thanks a lot for bringing this video. Always wanted you to upload one on Brauerizing !
    A couple of questions:
    1) If it had been a dynamic pop vocals, how much compression would you do in insert + sends ? Will it be the same ratio or different ?
    2)Why you compressed a little with others but heavily with Arouser ? Can i compress hard similarly with all parallel compressors and blend with insert(regular compression) to get the best non linear characteristics of every compressor ?
    3) Why just 5, can one use more colored Compressors in parallel to get more thick fat vocals ?
    Basically the best part of having parallels is the temptation to use most of the plugin gears subtly for their characters. :D

    • @MixBetterNowTV
      @MixBetterNowTV  6 років тому +1

      Harsh Verma No worries, Harsh. Glad I could do one on an aspect of Brauerizing.
      1) it's all up to you as is most things in mixing. I'm just explaining what Brauer does on his vocals. I literally heard him say all of these things I showed in this video verbatim. The more compression you do the more squished your vocal will get. It's not really a yes or no answer.
      2) See #1. You can do whatever you like. I'm just sharing what I heard Michael say on camera in an interview. The purpose of this video was to show how Michael mixes his vocals and the PHILOSOPHY behind it. The rest is up to you if you want to take it on board and make the setup work for YOUR mixes 😉
      3) 5 cause he uses 5. Use whatever compressors sound good to you. You don't have to use these. Develop your own chains if that bakes your cookies 😛👍🏻 In fact I urge you to use whatever sounds good to you. This is apparently what Michael likes.
      Hope that helps ✌🏻

      Mio My pleasure, Mio! I'm happy you enjoyed it! All credit to Michael, though... he's the genius. I'm just the messenger. But, yeah, I agree, after Brauerizing the vocals there's no going back... next video I'll have to explain (as well as I can) how he uses his A, B, C, D and unprocessed 5th buss at the end of his chain to sculpt the overall sonics. It'll be hard though since the way he really routes everything is only achievable in the analog domain.... but, I think the main premise and concept can certainly be taught and tweaked for use in the box 😜

    • @Mio-fu1sr
      @Mio-fu1sr 6 років тому +1

      We are all messengers my friend,even michael,belive me,and yes,after brauerizing there's no point of turning back,we can only think of improving in it,i've seen some videos doing this technique(brauerizing) with eq's instead of compressors....that idea is not bad at all,and i was thinking maybe the next evolution in audio will be combining these to ways...i'll be waiting for A,B,C,D man,hey check out jamie jampottt donnely on youtube chanal,he has a very good video on the subject,he did it everything by the book,i'm more kind of feeling rely guy,(i have ears you know :))) i like improvisation,i'm a professional musician so you know what i'm talking about

      what if i would leave the 5th buss processed and make another one unprocessed in case i have to work with samples,just as you do,two mix busses,then with the regular channels that are set to stereo out(in brauerizing you have to put them to no out) i put sends on them just like brauerizing technique and than i get something like additional parallel compression but with the clean sound,so some of the tracks go to brauerizing completely and on some of tracks im useing brauerizing set up only as a parallel compression(latency issue,is that possible,can i move the tracx or press the record mode unison technology,or something...)in fact what if i brauerize only some of the tracks and leave the others unbrauerized (and how do you do that in the same project)so the situation is similar to mid side technique,you processed the" important" tracks,the punch,the vocal,and leave the others(sides unprocessed) to fill....there is something magical about unprocessed tracks that i can't explane but im using it for shure they kind of softened the sound,its like when you put a chorus on bass..there's no harshness only ducking,i haven't done brauerizing on vocal yet cause i was not sure how and i didn't get to that point in the material that im working right now,this material dose not need brauerizing...but i'll do it today on some of my own stuff

    • @Mio-fu1sr
      @Mio-fu1sr 6 років тому

      what i want to draw with words is like having two mixes one brauerized one not and make a mix out of brauerized and not brauerized tracx,like having two same tracx one processed one not....what do you get from something like that....just thinking while writing

    Nice mix Pete! Frank Filipetti does a similar thing to michael Brauer's bus solution, where he breaks down the mix in four bandwidths covering the spectrum, creating crossovers with iirc McDsp Filterbank 202 @ 12dB per octave slopes. Compressors are selected to best enhance each section of the spectrum. Perhaps a Fairchild on the bottom end of a mix like yours, something else for a sweet airy top end, and so on. The round up changes depending on context. Michael Brauer has definitely got his system down, has a great ear, and creates beautiful mixes!

    Hey, great video explaining multi-parallel send/return, but you need to revisit Brauer’s technique. For starter, he mults his lead vocals to two buses: one for the verse and the other one for the chorus which than go to NO OUTPUT. So he doesn’t blend the dry signal with the compressed signal. This type of routing may create phase issues ITB and in hybrid situations. This routing is equally valid for his ABC&D buses. He uses sends for all his tracks rather than direct 2bud output. Cheers & happy brauerizing! :)

    • @madmuso5
      @madmuso5 2 роки тому +2

      I must be missing something when it comes to Michael's ABCD instruments method. Typically with mixing youd automate a vocal line for example to be louder by automating the fader which is the last guy in the chain. If all his channels are going into their corresponding ABCD buss (via sends) which has a compressor on it, how does he automate a line to be louder, like a snare fill for example. If he automates the snare channel itself then wont the compressor on the drum/bass buss simply clamp down even more as its now seeing more level? And he obviously cant automate the drum/bass buss because it will alter the bass gtr as well.

    Nice video! I'm just wondering the setup. I always thought that in the Brauer setup the vocal channel goes to dummy output so that the original channel in not parallel with the 5 compression busses. Of course everyone is free to make their own take on it and all the better so.

    • @MixBetterNowTV
      @MixBetterNowTV  6 років тому +2

      Vesa Laasanen Yeah for sure. In the interview I watched w him describing his vocal chain verbatim he said he sets up 5 sends and returns with the compressors on each buss. So you can essentially decide where you want the return to go. His specific setup is all analog and can't really be done EXACTLY the same way in the box. What I'm trying to convey here for those interested in Brauerizing their vocals ITB is that he basically uses 5 comps as sends and returns which are just as much about tonal coloration as they are about compressing. The rest is up to you to blend to taste or send the comp returns wherever you want 🤙🏻😊

    Hi Mr Woj! To insure these parallel compressors to work harmoniously, one has to be careful with attack and release settings of each compressor.
    Can you suggest a guideline..if i am using sets of compressor other than these ?
    Also is there any innovative method of subtle colored parallel eq's for next level vocal tone ?

    • @MixBetterNowTV
      @MixBetterNowTV  6 років тому +1

      Harsh Verma Howdy, Harsh. In regards to attack and release settings it's really up to the taste of the mixer. Release that's very slow vs release that's very fast will sound dramatically different. So I can't really tell you what you like (hope that makes sense). That being said, I typically go for a medium to slow attack time and a medium to fast release. I'm over generalizing here, but a 10ms attack and a 200/150ms release never got anyone in huge trouble. It's imperative to know your compression fundamentals before trying more advanced concepts like this. If you're shaky on dialing in a compressor and hearing what it does, using 5 in parallel is prob not a good idea.... yet. As for the parallel EQ, absolutely. I use parallel EQ all the time. Try anything you like and blend it in w your dry signal. There's also plenty of plugins that have natural parallel EQ like the Kush Clariphonic, Slate CS-Lift and Waves Scheps Parallel Particles. Start by trying an EQ A's an insert that has a dry/wet knob 👍🏻👌🏻✌🏻😊

    • @MixBetterNowTV
      @MixBetterNowTV  6 років тому +1

      Eric Hood Music Thanks Eric! Well, in Studio One there's "FX Tracks" and "Busses". So if I'm using an effect like Reverb or delay or parallel comp I'll use an FX Track. If I'm simply bussing tracks for routing purposes I'll use a "bus". But in Pro Tools it's just an Aux/bus or nothing so it really doesn't matter. In Pro Tools I use an Aux for both. Are you asking because you're using S1 and you're not sure which to pick for what purposes?

    • @MixBetterNowTV
      @MixBetterNowTV  6 років тому

      Music Production Videos Thx! ✌🏻😊 Yeah, he's basically using each comp on a send/return to compress the vocal in parallel (minimally... I'm not sure how scientific it is in regards to 1 or 2 DB). It's also very much about passing the audio THROUGH the comps to get the benefit of the tonal impact they impart on the audio. I'm not sure by what you mean w "add 4 vocal levels total (dbs)"? Yes, it's blending multiple vocal sounds together and yes it does add volume. Is that what you mean?

Bass tones, mid range, upper mids and tube non staccato. Then when you adjust something on that bus, it only affects that group of instruments. It reads to me like an alternative to having one master bus comp and using 4 + 1 clean instead?

    Not sure I understand the advantage of using the sends vs creating track stacks(logic) to send to A B C D. It's not like I'm going to be auditioning compressors for this set up...Also why wouldn't I just create track stacks for all of my different types of instruments...guitars go to one, keys go to one, drums go to one. etc Wouldn't I get even more movement and tonal variety in the mix by doing that? Since it's ITB it seems like this is an artificial limitation created by using actual consoles.

      DS POET You can use the FG-Mu from the slate bundle for the Manley... but unfortunately I don't know if any other Neve 33609 plugins besides the UAD... the waves VComp is the Neve 2254 which is the predecessor to the 33609. I think Brauer came up with this before multi-band compressors? Wouldn’t one dedicated AUX with a multi-band compressor plugin work the same? You select four separate frequency spectrums
    (Lows-mids-upper mids-highs) and compress these any way you like. Each band has its own volume also. Wouldn’t that be the same? Love your channel!

    • @MixBetterNowTV
      @MixBetterNowTV  6 років тому

      Paul T. Thanks for the kind words, Paul! I wouldn't say a multiband comp would work the same because he specifically chooses these compressors for the tone they impart on the audio. Hitting tubes and transformed is a very special thing and he's big on compressors that contain different "attitudes". Most multibands are pretty transparent. 👍🏻👌🏻

    I thought the idea was to compress different busses, each with their own compressor, for example: drum and bass buss; electric guitars buss; piano and acoustic guitar buss; vocals buss; etc., with each buss compressed separately, rather than compressing the whole mix together. I'm not sure all those parallel compressors on a lead vocal makes enough of an audible difference to bother. Just my 'pinion.

    Great information ... I use Pro Tools ... just curious if it would work as well setting up aux sends but instead of returns on the lead vox track, bring them into a separate sub mix "Vox Comps" , and then setting up that subs output to the the Lead Vox submix. I'm just thinking that way once I get the blend I want of the different comps, I can add more of less of the entire blend with one fader. Your thoughts? (also, I can't find the info you put up there from Brauer's site on it anywhere? It there a secret tab I'm missing ?)

    • @AndersHellquist
      @AndersHellquist 4 роки тому

      @@nicknash2008 it depends on how your DAW handles latency on tracks and busses. If the DAW doesn't handle latency correctly, you will get the 5 busses out of phase due to the different compressors introducing different extra latency and that typically differs from plugin to plugin, (as well as in outboard gear). I am personally using Ardour or Mixbus and those have pretty good internal handling of latency between tracks and next version will also compensate busses and outboard gear. In your case you will have to check the phase between the busses and adjust the latency between them to reduce or minimize the difference. In worst case, the latency changes if you change the settings in a plugin but in that case it is poorly written software and should not be used unlessnthe DAW can make up for the change. I hope this makes sense.

  • @sizzlemann
    @sizzlemann 6 років тому

    Hey, do you ever run out of DSP with all the plugins you use? If so, what do you do to reduce the usage? Do you ever print your effects to ease up on the DSP workload? Just wondering. I've been trying some of your methods just for kicks and my UAD meter is almost on 11!!

    • @MixBetterNowTV
      @MixBetterNowTV  6 років тому +1

      sizzlemann Well, I have quite a bit of DSP... I'm running 2 Apollo quads cascaded together with a thunderbolt satellite octo. So it's 16 SHARCS all together and that seems to handle what I throw at my mixes. But if I ever get in a situation where I need to free up DSP, I'll simply "commit" the tracks if I'm in Pro Tools or "render to audio" in Studio One. The important thing for me is to make notes as to what is/was on those tracks before doing that. You can also always print your track old school and then just delete or make the plugins inactive. But if you're really into and rely on the UAD stuff like I do, I can't recommend upping your DSP enough. Octos are super cheap nowadays and usually come with like $1000+ in plugin vouchers 👌🏻😎

    • @MixBetterNowTV
      @MixBetterNowTV  6 років тому +2

      Amir Aharony Thanks, Amir! Glad you like it 😊 I don't have any phase issues with using these comps on sends and returns... Most modern DAWs have really great delay compensation to handle and latency from certain plugins that were previously problematic. SOMETIMES I'll get phasing issues if (for example) I duplicate a bass DI and then process the duplicated track heavily with amp sims and distortion etc. IF that happens I just nudge the track in phase, flip the phase, or use Auto-Align on it. To me the phase problems have to be audible and between the delay compensation from the DAW I don't find it to be problematic in this situation. I'm not saying it couldn't happen... but as always, use your ears, and if you hear the phase getting wonky or see your correlation in the negative then fix the phase. If you're not hip to Auto Align by Sound Radix I can't recommend it enough 👍🏻✌🏻😉

    • @MixBetterNowTV

      dc3hawaii So the way he runs his master busses is a whole other thing in and of itself. He uses 4 submaster busses and 1 unprocessed stereo buss. But no, he doesn't use these exact same compressors for his master busses. The only one he uses as buss A is the Neve 33609. I believe the other 3 are different. I'll try and do a video on that... the only thing that's hard though, is his self proclaimed multibuss compression setup was designed to be used out of the box on an analog console with analog outboard gear. But I think I'm going to give a video a try regardless how hard I get hammered by the Brauer purists and experts out there. I highly implore you to go to his personal website where he tells you his entire process and the gear he uses to achieve it. It's well worth the read if you're interested 👍🏻😊

    as I understand it, Michael's whole thing is predicated on sort of the opposite idea... that is, the vocal doesn't cause the compressor on the drums to react and vice versa. It's NOT about sending a vocal to multiple compressors.
    Not that there is anything wrong with what you're doing if it works for you; it's just not what Michael does.

    • @MixBetterNowTV

      weedywet Im not here to argue and mislead. I'm relaying the info I heard from his lips to my ears verbatim in regards to how I'm showing his vocal processing. I'm not (in this instance) talking about his 4 sub masters and 1 unprocessed mixbuss (as I'm well aware of his 4+1 multi-mixbuss approach). He specifically described doing this exact thing with these exact compressors (I don't have a vintage Gates Sta-Level, hence the substitution of the Manley). There's a reason the vid is labeled as Brauerizing your VOCALS, and not Brauerizing Your Mix. As I've replied to others, I may do another vid addressing his 4+1 setup. But on numerous occasions in numerous vids I've seen, he describes this exact process and these exact compressors for his VOCALS. Sorry we seem disagree 👍🏻✌🏻❤️

      I"m hoping to not come off as 'aggressive' either! Only saying hat my understanding of Michael's idea has to do with the multiple sub groups with different compressors on each, being summed together into the final stereo. If this idea of multiple compressors on a vocal is also a "Brauer" thing, I'm happy to be wrong! Just not what I've seen.

    • @NicoRiversMusic

      I had the same understanding of this concept as Weedywet - multiple compressors for different groups of tracks so they act independently. I came to that conclusion after reading the page on Brauer's website. I'd love to hear how you guys came to resolve the difference in understanding.
