  • We get asked every day about adjusting Tiller on a recurve bow. How much can I wind the bow and down. Should top be smaller than the top. We discuss many ways archers destroy their recurve bows by adjusting the tiller.

I love the common sense approach of Steven. He is totally right. I am not seeded in the top ten archers, nor am I shooting for an Olympic team; so “if it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it” seems to be good advice.
Steve; please continue to be honest with us and tell us when we are being idiots, we respect you for it.

Genuine thanks for all you do for the archery community, this is a good channel with helpful content. It seems we can't do much for the wilfully uneducated amongst us, but I hope the good customers outnumber them for you.

Shot a bit when I was young. Started again to teach my young kiddos the sport and came across your channel. Love the content, super informative and helpful. You seem to have a genuine love of the sport and have fun doing it. Best of all, you usually make me chuckle! Thank you and keep up the good work!

O to 6mm tiller adjustment for recurve depending on drawlenght & bowweight. It does become more obvious at higher poundages (40 and up), with lower ones not really. Drawlength past 30" makes it obvious although in that case you're better off shooting a 27" riser or in the case of barebow a 29 even.
You basically eliminate all variables untill the only one remaining is you.

    Amen Brother !
    Your Exactly Right !
There's a lot of stress on the Limb bolts when the bow is strung .
I've been shooting archery and bow hunting going on my 48th year !
Back in the day shooting 70 to 80 lb. compounds with cables with teardrops, I had stringer, that went on each side of the teardrops and your put your foot on it and unstrung the compound like a recurve and then adjusted to Limb bolts .
I'll keep you in my Thoughts & Prayers for Strengthing !
So you can get back too shooting more poundage .
    Stay Safe & Healthy !
    God Bless !

Anyone that unwinds a recurve limb bolt when the bow is strung does not deserve to be in the sport.

EXACTLY! In the W&W owner's manual it tells you that you can go 4 turns from default but it doesn't tell you what default it since they set the tiller in the factory. I'm in the USA so after Emails, and some metric conversions they set a GAP between the limb bolt head and the bottom of the limb pocket that on an INNO riser is about 3/4"..... The problem w/ this is when you buy a used riser. So for 10 years I was shooting some messed up gaps that were too tight. When they are too loose the limbs can explode but when the gap is too small the shoulder of the limb bolt contacts and digs into the inner edge of the limb. So, if you get say $800.00 limbs and run the tiller bolts in too far you will over time be Fing your limbs. Then like you point out, if you have too few turns you will damage the riser and maybe the limbs too.
I bought a TFT-G & NS limbs put it together, set the brace to 8 1/2" and then checked my tiller and it was set to 1/8" diff. Put another way, W&W sent me a fantastic riser that was set up and tested that needs no adjustment. DON'T MESS W/ THESE SETTINGS!

I love your Channel and understand more than you know about entitled people wanting warranty for stupidity. I would like to say even though I am a returning new comer to archery and I tinker with my bow, being from an engineering background I need to know how things work and or setup if I didn't I would never been very good at my job before retiring. I made the adjustments to my bow regarding tiller brace height limb alignment knock placement arrow length and weight and all the things that go with correct arrow flight. I had finished this process in a week to the best of my ability anyway and haven't touched it since. To quote you I am in a place now where I subconsciously know my equipment is functioning correctly which takes away thoughts that distract me,. I don't have doubts and im happier when I'm practicing.
I'll never shoot a 300 but I'll stick with my equipment while I try to chase the elusive points that will get me there. That said haha I do want to try compound so I'll be coming to see you and drive you nuts with questions. I promise not to derail the bow and ask for my money back before I leave.
Hope you have a better day at work tomorrow you've got to look after that refurbished heart. Cheers, Rod.

I've turned out my limb bolts 4 turns to drop the bow weight to 30#. Suits my arrows and allows me to perfect my form using good quality limbs

Is it safe to use your bow with the tiller bolt fastened all the way in? It looks weird to me, but basically no manufacturers say that you can't.

The funny thing is a bunch of the advanced barebow guys say similar. That they either leave it at neutral or a tiny bit negative (maybe 3mm), but to not adjust it from there ever.

the guy says it well, people think that if they change the factory-set tiller, the shooting will be better, with exceptions there is no noticeable difference. It is obvious that the tiller adjustment does not change the weight of the bow arms, although some Italian manufacturers have a different opinion...
my friend is constantly adjusting something in the bow to see if it shoots better, the answer is no, but he feels better because he changed something, sometimes "improved" it, that's all

I think you need a video to play in store for new bow buyers. The vid should be (hopefully) be less than 3 or 4 min with this type of info.

That is wisdom: you’re a beginner, you’re so BAD that any micro adjustments won’t help. Get consistent before making fine adjustments

User error isn’t covered by warranty. If the shot and arrow through their foot they can’t blame you because you didn’t tell them not to. 😒

The thing is, people don't know what they don't know. It's just rude calling someone stupid if they made a mistake, even if they mistakenly think that entitles them to their money back. If someone knows, and then does it anyway - well, sure. But why call a beginner, or someone who doesn't know, stupid..?

Outfrickin’standing point Steven….it amazes me how some people get into overthinking the simplicity of “ the bow “. Especially when they get caught up in making adjustments just to get the most optimum performance of their bow. Unfortunately, just like you said, they don’t want to admit their mistakes, and want a refund simply because they broke a perfectly good bow..I always tell my students, especially the intermediate ones……K.I.S.S. ( Keep It Simple Silly ) 😇🤔…..unless they’ve had enough experience, or want to delve into the world of string walking archery….then, and only then should they experiment with tiller, and experiment only with very small increments. Otherwise….K.I.S.S. Thanks For Sharing Brotha 😇🏹🏹👍

We use to adjust tiller on compound bows back in the old days 80's, 90's because some bows needed it
