Totally agree with number 1. Tom Baker was my first Doctor, so I may be a bit biased, but if you look at every incarnation of the Doctor that came after him, you'll find at least one quirk they share with the Tom Baker Doctor. He provided the all-you-can-eat buffet for all of them to pick and choose the parts they liked, to make their own incarnation of him.

Another one you could have used was the Fifth Doctor wearing a piece of celery on his lapel. Yes, in Caves of Androzani, there's a line about the Doctor being allergic to "certain gases". However, I was at a Who convention in 1996 (Oldham UK), which soon turned into a Tom Baker one-man show (to tie in with the launce of his biography). Tom told the story of how he hates it when people eat celery. By the end of the convention, and especially during the auction), practically all the stars were imitating Tom Baker saying "A woman was eating celery..." So it seems likely that this story got out during Tom's tenure as the Doctor. Hence, in casting the Fifth Doctor it made sense to have an "in joke" about Tom Baker's dislike of celery!

Tom Baker is the best Doctor by lightyears. Even today with 87 year old, he still nails the part. There is not a single bad performence of him.
The curator was such a lovley moment from Moffatt. It was his way of saying "meddle with the show as you like, but I gave you the "final" regeneration, thats Tom Baker again." Brilliant.

I think David Tenant’s Doctor was as much David Tenant as Tom Baker’s was himself. All those years and he was my favorite until Tenant came along. Both were pure joy and both were followed by younger men who cleansed the palate for what was to come. Plus Tenant married the woman playing his daughter who is the daughter of a former Doctor. It doesn’t get any more Doctor Who than that.

@@Benji568 So you have to call me an Idiot. Tom is the best by lightyears. But to me Tennant is kinda overrated. (way to human, way to emotional) He isnt even in my Top five.
      My ranking would be...
      1. Tom Baker by lightyears....
      2. Paul McGann/John Hurt , also both had only one movie and audio Series both of them, just wow, not one bad performance
      3. Peter Capaldi,
      4. Sylvester McCoy,
      5. Matt Smith,
      6. Christopher Ecclestone one series + his first BF audio, but wow. / Colin Baker, the Audios are awesome, he nails the part,
they improved so much of the 6th Doctor, and show how good he is, given propper material.
      7.William Hartnell
      8. David Tannent, way to overrated, way to human
      9. Jon Pertwee
      10. Patrick T. havent seen much of him, maybe higher next time. You can flip this and 11...not sure yet.
      11. Jodie Withaker really really bad writing, maybe higher next time (after some Big Finish). Again, she is NOT bad, its SJW writing.
      12. Peter Davison....he doesnt click for me, mostly because there is no good chemestry with companions, most of them are annoying tbh.

Every Dr. Who fan has their own favorite Doctor. However the number one quirk is totally true. As good as the other actors were Tom Baker's version of The Doctor is the most iconic simply because as stated Tom Baker was playing himself not a character while the rest were playing a character albeit quite well depending on the personal opinions of others of course.

I agree, Tom’s my fave. However, I feel most Doctors have a bit of their own personality injected into their performance, weather conscious or not. Jon Pertwee was the most serious doctor and from what I’ve saw in interviews, seemed to be quite a serious man. One exception I can think of as being farthest from their doctor’s character is Colin Baker who actually seems to be a sweetie in real life, despite the 6th doctor being quite abrasive.

Tom Baker *IS* the Classic Doctor. But I put forward that David Tennant is the NuWho Doctor. So much so, that the Beeb considered cancelled the show on his departure, as they thought it might be impossible to find a good replacement. Peter Capaldi is also right up there, for me. I would love to have some Capaldi stories written by RTD for comparison, as I feel Moffat never did him justice. He had some great scenes, and speeches, during his run, but think what RTD could have done with him...

1:26 "If you've heard Nicola Bryant speak off set, then you'll be aware that she's clearly not American."
You'll also be aware if you heard her speak on set. Really, her American accent is not good. I had no idea at the time that that strange accent she speaks in was supposed to be American. I missed the part of the episode where they revealed she was American, so I always assumed her accent was yet another strange British accent (they have so many!). Obviously, her accent is not American, nor was her dialogue written with American English in mind. For example, she says, "Don't let's fight" instead of the American version "Let's not fight."
My theory is that the TARDIS telepathic circuit translation thingy is always trying to translate alien languages into British English, so it tried to do the same thing to Peri's American English, creating the strange hybrid speech that comes out of Peri's mouth.
Regardless, her inclusion was definitely not especially attractive to an American audience any more than Kevin Costner's attempt at being a British person would make "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" (1991) a particularly attractive movie to British people.

what makes the 'father's day' episode different is that, in that case of changing the timeline, it was a character interfering in their own personal history. she saved her father meaning he would be around while she was growing up but if he was still around for her then she would have a different history and not have the motivation to save him meaning he would be killed by the car anyways .... basically its a variation of the grandfather paradox which wasn't the case in the other instances of changing the timeline,

Many have played The Doctor, but only one IS The Doctor... Apart from all the reasons you stated as to why Tom Baker is No1, another is that his performance in respect to other characters / monsters / plot devices... elevated their importance, their traits and terrors - the sense of fear, esp in 'The Gothic Years', was utterly real because Tom's compelling wide eyed delivery made you believe - he made the great writing work all the more. A classic example being 'The Horror of Fang Rock', which succeeded on the all pervading sense of claustrophobic doom rather than monster scares... Tom's delivery about the fate of Reuben, and then 'Reuben the Rutan' grinning like a fiend...Crikey! Brrrr...

Both producer Philip Hinchcliffe and Tom Baker himself wanted to get rid of the scarf. That's why the Doctor doesn't wear it for most of "The Deadly Assassin" or at all in "The Talons of Weng Chiang". The Sherlock Holmes style costume in "Talons" was set to become the Doctor's new regular costume (and Leela was going to ditch the skins and start wearing normal clothes). Then Hinchcliffe got bumped across to produce "Target", and Who's new producer, Graham Williams, promptly reversed every decision Hinch had made, including keeping the skins and the scarf, and going back to the old white console room.

The Tommy Cooper look I thought was " just like that" it brought humour and joy to this character and is this really the first time the doctor wore a fez I don't know but didn't the first doctor ware one on a off? You know first time I saw Matt as the doctor he reminded me of Tommy Cooper he definitely looked that way of looking at the cameras and therefore a fez or something similar like the hat act Tommy did is the doctor if you consider the regenerations still I guess know everybody would think Tommy as the doctor which would have been really funny but then there is Matt Smith?

I'm, not sure why the film Darlek Invasion Earth (W/ Peter Cushing) doesn't get mentioned a lot these days? It was the best future length (if not the only one), featuring a Doctor whom wasn't played by an actor on the regular TV series Doctors! I loved this film as a kid, with the "Robomen" and the different coloured Daleks (denoting Dalek hierarchy) and had weird CO2 fire extinguisher weapons, which made things explode lol!! I thought the film was so cool as a young 10-year old hiding behind the sofa haha!!

    *Here's my Timeless Child theory:*
After John Simm's Master lasers Missy with the full blast of his laser screwdriver in "The Doctor Falls," Missy regenerates anyway into Sacha Duan's Master. He somehow then makes his way to Gallifrey when the Timelords Reveal that he is the Timeless Child, causing him to go insane realizing that he would never die and have a limitless regeneration supply, which explains his insanity during his return in Spyfall. Later in Season 12, the Master's insanity increases, leading him back to Gallifrey where he uses The Moment, determined to discover any survivors. (If any did survive, he would not be the only Timeless Child and therefore not alone, but Gallifrey falls.)
This is how the Master could destroy Gallifrey in "one night." Furthermore, if my theory is true, Ruth must also be an incarnation of the Master and therefore could be the true reason as to why the Judoon were pursuing her, meaning that there should be a big reveal that she is another incarnation. Because of her sanity, it would make the most sense for her to be the incarnation right before Derek Jacobi's Master.
A good plot of the Season 13 finale would be Ruth's reveal, the Doctor discovering the true story of the Timeless Child, and a final conclusion between the Masters' two incarnations. Because Sacha Duan's Master still desperately wants to die, the Doctor, after her and the Master's arcs are completed and they have sympathy for each other, somehow gives the Master the ability to die. However, Ruth's Mistress doesn't understand the Master's arc yet just like how John Simm's Master didn't understand Missy's perspective in "The Doctor Falls" when she stabbed him. Ruth therefore tries to prevent the Master from killing himself by locking him in the Matrix. Eventually, after battling his previous incarnation along with saving the Doctor and her companions from Ruth for an interval of the finale, Sacha Duan's Master begins to realize that he's turning good; He's saving people like the Doctor's companions that didn't need to be saved in order to get him what he wanted. By the end of the episode, the Master tells Ruth that he will live through his last incarnation (because he now has the ability to die) and help people like the Doctor instead of continuing to be a bad person. Unfortunately, Ruth still hasn't turned and decides it's better for the Master to die than to stand with the Doctor, so she blasts him with her laser screwdriver (Which wasn't revealed that she had one until this moment), taking everyone by surprise as the Master slowly lies down and rests. The Doctor is pushed to the edge; She uses [some weapon that has a reason to be present] to kill Ruth's Mistress, following even more shock from her companions and everybody who previously acknowledged her hate for violence. The Doctor then seals Ruth's identity in the pocket watch once she regenerates into Derek Jacobi's Master which is then later opened during Season 3, allowing the Master to continue his tasks and then jumps back in the tardis with Yaz and her other companion/companions. Horrified by her decision, Yaz and the others leave the TARDIS fam in a peaceful and farewell manner, leaving the 13th Doctor to go on her last New Year Special episode journey alone.
This is a perfect setup. Please share this idea to as many people as you can, no need to give credit, just so this plot shines out among the Doctor Who Community. Thank you for taking your time to read this and have a nice day!

i wouldn't say Hinchcliffe and Holmes killed off UNIT. Nicholas Courtney was unavailable for The Android Invasion and Seeds Of Doom and that really finished UNIT as Graham Williams didn't want any UNIT story's. Hinchcliffe went on to write The Valley Of Death and Helm Of Awe which both have UNIT elements in them. Had Hinchcliffe and Holmes started Season 15 there may of been more UNIT stories to quote Hinchcliffe we would of done 1 or 2 a year and the narrow mindness of Letts and Dicks with UNIT stories ment the same type of story was used. Only Invasion of the Dinosaurs and Robot were different

Tom Baker is and always will be the Doctor. Although David Tennant and Matt Smith come a close second. And if you really think about it, their Doctors where allot like Tom Baker's. They only differ when the show runners and the writers moved away too much from canon. David Tennant's long coat and timey whimy logic. And Matt Smith's love of gadgets and spontaneity. My favorite Doctors in order, are Tom Baker, David Tennant/Matt Smith, and Sylvester McCoy. Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee are great actors outside of Doctor Who, but their Doctor was a bit off for me. Same with Peter Davison, he was in many ways the first modern Doctor. His Doctor had a better budget and better special effects. But his Doctor always seemed like he was about to cry or have a nervous breakdown. If you're going to travel with the Doctor, and face evil that will kill you, or some part of the universe, you don't want a Doctor that seemed more likely to fail than the companions.

The concept of the Doctor being able to change gender is actually a statement by the writers against transgenderism. The writer is saying that a non human character can change their gender. The change is at a genetic level where they are fertile and able to mother or father children. This is not the cosmetic change offered to humans! In other words the writer advocates that humans can’t do it, only a fictional alien character can! I suspect that subsequent writers in the show didn’t realise what was being written into the show’s lore.
