- From 1969, this is parts 1 and 2 of F Sharp, which later became The Musical Box. Before that, most of part 1 and the ending of part 2 were joined together to create Manipulation, which was recorded on 06-Jan-1970 as part of the Genesis Plays Jackson tapes.
This is from a reissue of Anthony Phillips' Archive Collection Volume One, and is the first time the second part of F Sharp has been uploaded to UA-cam. Artwork courtesy of Kirby's Adventure Music!

According to Phillips, this demo was played by himself and Mike together. Even if often attributed to the only Ant, the demo was written by the two together.
Phillips said that the intro is Mike, the "arpeggi" were created by the two together, the chorus section was born from two different ideas: two basic chords (E-F#) written by Mike, and other chords (later played by Banks on organ) written by Ant.
The section at 2:12 was Ant, while the section at 4:41 was a combination of both them playing different chords.
There are a lot of Genesis era songs in ant's archive collection and Ant's private parts and pieces series. Well worth checking out. Genesis DNA is all over the place.

I had no idea this even existed. Definitely sounds like the musical box.
Being a Genesis fan for a long time, this is really interesting to listen to for the first time. It's like listening to The Musical Box but only Anthony's moments.
the combination of all these 12 strings togheter really gives this song a whole new atmosphere, much more dense and emotional than the final recording with only the rickenbacker and occasionnal parts from steve and banks
I can hear a small bit of "Twilight Alehouse" on there too; i.e., the lead up to that final power jam (but without the final jam - just the lead up riff).

Banks played 12string when they were live too. They were possibly the most talented of all Prog Rock groups, certainly on a par with The Moody Blues core 7 era of Hayward and Pinder
Too bad Manipulation didn't know make the cut on "Trespass" (the group's second album), nor did Let Us Now Make Love (which was one of Phillips's favorite songs) as it had the potential of a hit single.
Without ant they wouldnt of got anywhere he was the only one who could read music

'tis interesting to hear the development of the original concept, to how it developed into the final version. The second half could have become another track on Trespass.

What is this "Genesis Plays Jackson tapes" you speak of? Early demos?
Genesis Plays Jackson is a long rumored set of tapes recorded by the band in January 1970, which was released on the Genesis 1970-1975 box set.
It's 15 minutes long, and the tracklist is:
- Provocation (early Fountain of Salmacis and Looking For Someone)
- Frustration (early version of Anyway, and reuses a part of an existing demo called Hair on the Arms and Legs)
- Manipulation (early version of The Musical Box / F Sharp)
- Resignation (unique song that was taken from a a track called Peace)
