- Former Apple employee David Payette shows you iPhone system services you should turn off right away. These services can track your location, collect your data, and drain your battery. It’s amazing to me that we actually agreed to this level of tracking. Fortunately, there’s a way to opt out.
Even if you knew these settings existed, we’ve uncovered some “easter eggs,” as the kids say, that were pretty alarming. Almost all of the names in the list of System Services on your iPhone is at least misleading.

know about? all I know is it has been previously suggested i turn these off, so all of mine were off. There are some services I use in settings I have left on, contrary to prior suggestions. Apparently, I accepted the explanations of all these covered today, cause they were all off. Yeah @PayetteForward!

I've followed your earlier suggestions. I have even fewer Location System Services enabled than the ones you showed here. Nice that the update to iOS 16.6 didn't reenable any.
My poor tired XsMax is down to 82% battery capacity. I'm holding out until September to decide whether to get an iPhone 15 or to replace the battery. $80 or >$1,000? The iPhone 15 had better be pretty special to be worth that much to me.

Awesome video! Every iPhone user deserves this honest breakdown. Significant locations is also used for backtrack in the compass app to help find your way back if you haven’t set waypoints.
You can use that without having Significant Locations turned on. It’s how I have my Watch Ultra set up.

Doesn’t „system customization“ affect the auto dark mode and optimized battery charging? I’ve also enabled compass calibration because without it I can’t use apps like Flightradar24, weather radars and many others like I want. Thanks for the great video again.
The ONLY one I have have on is find my phone it has been that way for over an entire year. When I first subscribed to your channel. My iphone 13 battery is still at 97% after 1 1/2 years in service. And I am a UA-cam moderator using my IPhone13 exclusively. I also have an Iphone 7plus that I use as well, but no longer for moderating. I use it for calls and texts it has served me well since 2016. I had the battery replaced at 79% (4 months ago) however the Capacitative screen is about worn out. Thank you for all the tips and tricks You are appreciated very much
I have very much enjoyed watching these videos. You are correct and I had to keep stopping the video in order to keep up. I did notice a few of the idea you spoke about were not on my phone. Examples: location, location Services and System Services. There could be more however these are the ones I wrote down

So happy you made an updated version of this!! Thank you! I have a question: when I disable Networking & Wireless, my screen immediately dims noticeably. Likewise, if I toggle it back on, the brightness I’m accustomed to comes back. Is this normal? What can I do to retain the brightness I have with the setting on? Thanks again!

Does leaving the location based alerts/suggestions on work if you’re running a VPN?

Which location settings (or other settings in general) are have to be enabled so that unwanted/unknown AirTag tracking is working?
Call me paranoid, but I want to turn off as many location tracking settings as possible, and still want to be notified of unwanted AirTags tracking me.
I turned off significant locations everytime, but it keeps turning on automatically. Do you think it has something relates to left behind feature ?

Interesting thing I found is when Location-based suggestions is on, every time you open the app switcher the location arrow at the status bar appears. Only way to make it stop appearing when you switch apps is disabling this location service. Find my phone on the other hand turns on every time you turn on the screen and when the screen is on it polls location every 3-5 minutes. Not saying you should turn this off though. I keep Find my phone in case I lose it.

If you turn off network and Wi-Fi, can you still be alerted if there’s an air tag near you since it stop sharing the location?
I would want to still be notified if there was an unwanted air tag near me.
I recently started using Apple Maps because I moved to a different state and my new address is ONLY found on Apple Maps. It’s NOT on Google Maps or Mapquest or anywhere else (yet).
How can I show date on the status bar next to the time without using an app or using a “trusted” app?
After watching this video I turned on the location indicator for system services. So even after turning off most of the prompts mentioned in the video when ever I unlock my device and WhatsApp is open then I see the little location icon at the top indicating something is using my location, but I have turned off location permission permanently for WhatsApp.

If you have Apple Watch or AirTags precision finder is worst and takes much more time to locate. Don’t disable the stuff he talked, a lot of apps and functions on the iPhone will break and behave badly. Don’t want a iPhone to do that, don’t use it buy android.

The system services is suddenly using a lot of my cellular data. If I turn these off will it stop?
The document and sync took 2.8gb within an hour and I wasn’t on my phone!

I literally have everything off aside from “find my” and “setting time zone” I left on “system customization” just cause I mess with a lot of stuff plus there is no arrow by it ever. The ones that show if it’s been used recently or in the past 24 hours. Literally only 3 things on 😂
Since following the advice of this video, now my phone keeps telling me that the phone that I have in my hand has been "left behind" at a previous location. Any advice as to which setting might be causing such a weird problem?

I am however a little leary about turning off the Routing & Traffic. I resonate with your reason to switch it off, however even if “Apple” is using my location information, I think perhaps being alerted to a traffic issue which ‘might’ advise me about an accident or road work being done may / could be to my advantage. Our advice is to turn it on if you want to be informed of when Apple is tracking your location! Apologies if it wasn’t immediately clear!
System customisation affects Night Shift, which turns your screen to a more yellow-ish tint after sundown to limit it's affect on sleep.
I don't know however if night shift would be the only affected function.

In India it shows Mobile network search instead of cell network search. I have disabled it but both are same right??
Sounds the same to me! I’d say give it a go and turn it off and if you experience any oddities turn it back on!

It will only affect the arrow you see when using the find my app but you’ll still be able to track the distance the AirTag is from you!
I do use Apple Maps and have for years. Also have used Waze for traffic routing information.
The checkin feature is great for kids or single woman going on a date or traveling alone ect. Not unless.
Problem is some of these settings stop the optimised charging from working for some reason

I still use Google. Apple Maps changed my route and I didn’t know it, ended up going a way I didn’t need to go. Google will change it too, just wish they had an option to turn that feature off.

Clear and useful presentation. I have a question, though: Aren't these the same services that can be used to locate missing people, accidents, lost hikers, the location of criminals, etc. I just want to make sure we're not shooting ourselves in our collective foot. There are trade-offs to complete privacy.
I agree with your sentiment but I can’t imagine any of the services we talk about in this video having any effect on the important human circumstances you mentioned. We always say to leave Emergency Calls & SOS on. None of these settings have an effect on law enforcement’s ability to do their important jobs. 🙏

Is there a way to improve dictation on iOS, 16.5.1? Dictation has been very buggy and so has Siri. I don’t know if I am the only one who is experiencing this.
@@colinsouthern it still does not work as it used to 4. Suddenly there have been so many bugs in the system that it’s hard to count them. Like look at this reply to you, and you can see so many errors in the spellings despite using proper pronunciation and dictating slow. It cannot get words like they’re correct. That word was supposed to be. There
@@colinsouthern sure that reply I wrote earlier using dictation was in a room with just 1 person, which is me. I did not even have any fans running. So there becomes there or they and like wise they or their become words that sound similar are misinterpreted and given all the hype on artificial intelligence technology one would expect that the system makes some sense of what is being said and in the context it is being said and use the right words. Four for for and when you expect it to get a number digit in it takes in the word!
Anyhow, nothing as of now in our control and there are no fixes that have been recommended, waiting for the next hype IOS 17!
@@colinsouthern I would not conclude that because I have been an iOS user from the beginning. Also I want to tell you that I am a accessibility feature user which is VoiceOver and unfortunately no other operating system offers such convenience in using their device. So I will wait and watch. As iOS has given me the freedom to use the phone despite of my fight impairment as good as anyone else. Besides, which I never had these challenges earlier.
