I love this commercial, I honestly felt like that a few times while visiting places in the Philippines. I got robbed once and the only thing that I had on me was my American Express card that I had in a separate pocket. It saved my ass and my vacation.
Ogilvy and Mather. Advertising guru David Ogilvy was known as the Father of Advertising. He coined the phrase, "The consumer is not a moron. She's your wife."
In the early 80's I traveled around Europe and if I was in a city that had an American Express office, nearly everyone knew where it was, from cab drivers, local citizens and just about anyone on the street. I made good use of the offices, got local information and recommendations, even translations of foreign language instructions into english. The world today is much different, but there's something good about dealing with a local agent in a face to face contact. Amex has closed most of their offices and I'm sorry to see them gone. (been Amex holder 42+ years)
I remember the things I used to charge my American Express card in Thailand especially the massage parlors. Wild times. I didn’t leave home without it. Lol !
It’s interesting this commercial is from the 60s because the layout of the commercial seems almost exactly like a lot of credit card commercials today. He’s a rugged guy going on side street adventures but also a stylish gent going into shops and buying blazers with his American Express card. The ideal of cool was not really any different then I guess.
Created by Ogilvy and Mather. Advertising guru David Ogilvy and his firm created many of the most famous ad campaigns, including Hathaway shirts, Dove soap and Rolls-Royce. He once said, "The consumer is not a moron. She's your wife." This ad remains my favorite. Best TV ad ever.
I remember this, and the re-boot they did later. The re-boot was better. The "vagabond" looked more decrepit, the concierge more disdaining and so forth. It definitely, in my mind, was exactly the sort of marketing angle AMEX could take advantage of considering the relative infancy of MC and VISA in those days.
I always imagine the man in the commercial is stuck in a time loop. The plane he boards at the end goes down over the ocean and he ends up in an emergency raft in the middle of the ocean.
I've only seen this early Amex commercial on other UA-cam channels; were there other amex card commercials filmed in the 1960s? If so, please post them, thanks.
For all that finger snapping, to get that royal American Express Card service was something like a $20 annual fee in the 1960's. Now you need one of their premium cards to do the same. People traveling in private jets probably want the Centurion Card, with its $10,000 initiation fee and $5,000 annual fee. I'll stick with my credit union Visa card. It works the same at McDonald's as those fancy-pancy cards.
0:20 lol. In real life they will tell you cash only, Also if they accept credit, they most likely won’t accept American Express, because of their high fees. I should know. I threw my Gold card to the cashier and she said American Express wasn’t accepted there. 🤦♂️ Had to go back to my vehicle to get my Visa.
Hi robatsea2009l, I'm with CBS News and I'm interested in possibly using this commercial in an Evening News piece. Does this video belong to you? Let me know and thanks.

So that's the infamous "Charles F. Frost"!
Damn, his accumilated Bill must be like $350.....1960's ballin'
New User wish I could take my current money back to the 1960’s. You could buy a whole ass suit for like $200 or less 😂😂😂
I’m going to try this. Go to a restaurant without shoes, sit down and toss my Amex Platinum before even ordering food. 🤦🏽♂️
Just ensure it’s with your American Express Green Card!
My favorite AMEX commercial ever! Wish they make a limited production run on the original 💳 today
Kudos to the original ad agency creative team & film crew.

"The American Express credit card. Don't leave home without it."
I remember that commercial from the mid 1960s. Very effective.
So do I!
You are old

Pero que creatividad había en esa época una muestra clara de que en vez de evolucionar con el paso del tiempo vamos en detrimento.
I would think that small island towns would be pretty much cash-only.
Maybe today but back then it was all mechanical. From cash, check and credit it worked
only sitdown restaurants took credit cards. or if you checked in a hotel rented a car. other than that on small islands cash was only thing accepted.
Back then, for foreign travel, this card was all you needed
This is the great Mason Adams doing a low-key voice-over.
when someone looks you up and down, and you have the power to buy their little life. Black card

Where can I find this reboot?

And VISA was still CHARGEX
❤❤❤ how come they make garbage commercials now … this is like a tiny movie !! Excellent
I m the emoloy of AMEX.So happy to watch it.

My guess is the :50 second point must be the original Centurion Lounge.

I like diz commercial
Let's see that face when the bill came.
This is funny because so many places that take credit don't accept Amex.
And this is a modern day commercial
This is the 1960s so yeah it WAS good
Nowadays they do.
That man should use MasterCard or Visa, since not many places around the world accept Amex (American Express).
The world has changed a lot since the 1960s . There was a time when American Express had an office in almost every country on the planet 🌎
@@steve4910 And change isn't good.

Unfortunately that is true, but once in a while in Asia you will find a place that accepts your American Express card and you get treated real good.
The other problem is charge reversal based solely on the card holders request. That was the reason I stopped accepting them.
Lol @ Eric Mcdonough
What's this song?
Tin pans and sticks lol
IS THIS GUY AUNT KEA TALKING ABOUT

I would be willing to bet that American Express still owns the rights to that old commercial.
