Drawing is why I started learning anatomy.
I think learning the basics of perspective and how light works (the form principle is a great place to start) can take one a long way, and with those, you can draw anything.
I love drawing, and I hope you can enjoy it too. :)
Edit: (you can google my name if you want to see stuff I drawn or painted.)

I do enjoy it, that's the first thing that I learned. It's really nice.

I like your point about making it as simple as possible to start building the new habit. The way my mind works, it's quite common for an explosion of complexity to follow a good idea almost instantly-and, soon enough, the new thing I want to do has a ton of details attached, and I'm excited about all of them too, but it gets to the point that the whole thing becomes way too daunting, and I've exhausted myself just by the thrill of thinking the whole thing up, and now there's no energy left to start even the basic part, and anyway doing just the basic part would feel so inadequate in relation to the massive plan, and certainly trying to start all the parts of the plan at the same time as the basic part would be too much . . . and so nothing happens at all, except the making of a grand plan never executed. _But_ . . . I can build a habit of insisting that I try to postpone the dreaming up of complexity until I've started actually _doing_ the simple part and that I add to the habit only one little new bit of action at a time.

My mother studied at the Art School of the University of Chicago. She drew beautifully. Her teachers suggested her go into medical illustration. She observed a dissection and that ended that career path.

I think creating daily habits is really challenging. When I had assignments for daily sketchbook drawings it was very easy to fall behind because of how easy it is to get caught up in other classes and daily life.
I applaud you for your effort in trying to draw daily, as it’s something that I have not been able to do consistently. You have a good approach - draw from life (preferably not photo) with great variety of subjects and you are sure to improve! A little tip: it may be helpful to think in shape. Sometimes I get so caught up in the outline of an object that when I take a step back and look, all the proportions are wrong. It’s helpful to see things broken up into shapes and negative shapes of space in between.

Whether it be sketching or throwing clay on the wheel, practice is key. It’s the only way to hone your skill. Eventually you will also start seeing things differently and noticing details you hadn’t before. It’s very exciting.

Perhaps you can also try sculpting a skull, you're very familiar with the forms already. I find that sculpting really helps me draw better.

The thing with drawing is that you dont draw with the hand, you draw from the shoulder - that is, the control of the drawing implement is controlled from the shoulder. I suspect with the strength training you do with your hands, and the muscle you develop for climbing is standing in your way! I'd try taping the pencil to my hand so as not to grip it in order to develop the free arm movement you need. You can do it. You want to do it - so you will.

I can't draw either, it could also be because I'm left handed? My husband started working life as a Draftsman where he learned how to control a pen and pencil. then he was able to draw models to scale. He still has impeccable penman skills. Even after 50 + years when he ended up having his own Oil related business his skills are the same. I can draw something if I see someone do it first BUT it has to be simple like a Cat. Good Luck Sam, I'm sure you'll get there eventually.

Drawing is one often those things that is just impossible for me to achieve. Even if try to draw a potato 🥔 will be awful.
    Respectfully yours,
