  • The laryngeal adductor reflex causes the vocal cords to be adducted (brought together) to seal off the airway when an object or liquid passes into the upper larynx. The reflex occurs in the medulla oblongata in the brainstem. The vagus nerve and its branches carry the sensory and motor neurones. This reflex is particularly important for a safe swallow, to stop aspiration into the lungs and subsequent infection.

This is so interesting. I suspect I've always had histamine intolerance, I used to gag with even my saliva all the time, I had hiccups all the time... I had pneumonia 3 times as a child. Breathing is an effort sometimes and I get sleepy and heavy.
I wonder if that's where some food allergies might come from too, you know, with food going through the wrong pipe...
    🤔
Oh, well, everything is managed now, it's not for me to come to conclusions.
Thanks for the awesome videos. Our bodies are so complex and fragile, it's wonderful!

What about c level nerve damage causing unsafe swallow? What level in the neck would cause unsafe swallow or even saliva getting into the larynx causing a cough? Can you please comment on the c spine level nerve d GR that can cause this?
