I'm definitely looking into this. Unfortunately, red and black are not the intended colour choices so I am looking into the possibility of dyeing them first !
@@orlalifeboat8779 if they won’t be on view unless needed I’d just roll with the original colours! More of a talking point. I very much doubt they will dye!
Or just use them as overhead storage, especially for clothes. Wherever you have vertical space above you that you don’t need, ie it leads to the windows, hang the netting and store stuff up there.
I am so glad to finally see some long format videos! I’ve been hoping you would decide to do this. Forget the people hurrying you, and enjoy the process. Remember you are sharing your journey, not churning out entertainment. I can wait to see where this takes you! Keep it up!
Incredible video, sorry for the language, but I speak Spanish, but I didn't want to stop encouraging your work and your project from uruguay south america, a big hug
Enjoyed the longer more detailed video. The only time frame you have to work to is your own and nobody else's business. Looking forward to future episodes.
I do have a question. You mentioned using it in the canals. How does the width of this measure up to a typical canal boat and wont it be too tall to go under bridges and walkways? Sorry if that is a dumb question. I am from the USA and all i know of the canals is from watching youtube videos of them. It seems like a very pleasant and relaxing way to live. The youtube channel i watched was Cruising the cut.
Great video. Masses of information. You are not being slow! Heavy jobs, laborious jobs, specialist jobs and electrical, plumbing and fit out to come. It’s huge. For most people it would be weekends taking 5 years.
I Feel That Living Full Time In A Lifeboat As My Tiny Home Is A Good Idea As I Live Near A Place That Floods A Lot In The USA + Love Ya UA-cam Lots and Lots
use the belts for securing storage or as bed straps, a hammock, but whatever you do should definitely try and keep some of her herritage with bits like the belts, also dont forget insulation maybe even spray foam like people do when converting vans loving this hope to keep seeing progress
yes I think I will although hopefully I will dye them a different colour first ! Yes re insulation, the areas where she is one layer of glass thick (and without poly foam) I definitely will be
love this video! Great job so far and just adding to the work load, this video was probably what we all needed 😀. Keep up the work i'm rooting for you, and Orla!
I really enjoyed this first video. What an awesome project this is and I just can't wait for the ones to come. I've got to admit I don't like them "shorts", I think they're better suited for Tiktok or Instagram, and I know how much UA-cam pushes creators to make shorts in order to compete with Tiktok, but I think they're wrong and both platforms are completely different. Anyways, loved this first one Johnny. Keep up the awesome work, mate. Cheers from Paris where I hope to be seeing you navigate on the Seine river some day ! 🙂
completely agreed Franz. It is quite daunting trying to make these longer form videos (and I have no clue whether or not they'll go down well) but I know if I was watching a project in short-form content only, I would like to be able to see longer videos! Likewise, Paris is on the boat's bucketlist !
Very well presented walk-round and through the lifeboat. Capacious interior space. I like the scow bow, and that everything's curvy! The outboard motor (no, you don't need 150hp!!), may be prone to damage in the rough and tumble of the UK canal system, so consider a steel tube bump-proof frame to protect it. A bow-hatch would be useful for mooring/ anchoring, as walking on top of the boat could be risky. Adding narrow side decks is limited, as canals and locks are narrow, 7ft 6", I think. Not sure about air draft (height above w/l.. go measure a trad narrowboat for max dimensions. Great project.
My son has just shown me your TikTok channel as l asked him what his Orla T-shirt was about. Needless to say I’m now following you too. I’ve sent you a small donation I’ve also subscribed here. Really looking forward to following your progress. Good luck.
Cracking video been watching u on Tictock and so glad u decided to do longer format vids ( don’t worry about editing or mistakes no one give a hoot we just want to see u crack on and you ur stuff personally I am very envious of ur build , show what works but truthfully people want to see the thing that don’t work too so don’t hide it. Keep up the work young man ur doing great
Keep bringing the long videos to UA-cam.. you're a likeable person with a cool project and story.. perhaps you can use the seat belts as netting for under a bed or along the outdoor area
Kinda my dream to do this, so best of luck with your build My idea for the belts was use them as straps under tension to build the bed out of, supporting the mattress
personally id put the bridge where it use to be flatten the floors and build a walkway around the vessel with pontoons under them , you have a flat bottom boat thats going to bob around like a cork with no keel . having a helm outside like you want is fine in good weather and your going to need a large outboard to push it around say 150hp or so ! you could go electric with batteries and solar panels which would be your best bet , cruise around the world virtually free . the best place on a boat to sleep is the stern so under your helm id put the master bedroom you can put the head and gallie anywhere .it would be cool to have big windows in the bow and make it a living room . id build sleeping births for guests ( bunkbeds ) one on each side to sleep 6 total . you have a blank canvas do something different and wild and check out boat salvage yards for cheap parts , put the electric motor where the diesel use to be and use what you have ! just my opinion !
Really interesting build - fascinating to watch! You could use some of the seatbelts to make Orla branded belts for trousers - maybe help fund the build 🤷🏼♂️
For someone who does not know the left hand side from the right hand side of a boat, I found your video really informative. Looking forward to seeing many more videos especially the fit out. One question. You said that you would live on the canals and river networks. I thought only barges can go on canals? ⚓️
Hey man, not far behind you. Just had a 21 person life capsule land in my lap and I’ve just started the work….thinking of recording for posterity myself. If you’re ever on the river Ouse in York give me a nod! Where about’s were your 02 bottles? I’m going to fill mine will lead for front end ballast as she’s aft heavy at the moment. Anyway…subscribed and looking forward to your progression. If you need any help give me a shout (I’m a designer/fabricator of sort) . Dom 😊
Go have a look at Alex Hibbert, who is doing similar but using his vessel for Arctic use. Alex left the engine etc, in the vessel but has had to add over 2 tonnes of ballast to bring the waterline deeper for stability.
Enjoyed your first longer vid. Have you thought about your electrical supply/power for lighting and your cooking options? Will you be going lithium and solar etc. I know your a long way away from that but while Orla is bear would be the best time to think of wiring etc. I will be following your exciting journey and thank you for making the vids.
Hi there, fantastic first video and a great project, really admire what you are doing and your approach - great work. A thought struck me when you mentioned that the heavy diesel engine was removed and there is little or no keel. You might have balance issues with the engine removed, you have probably already compensated for this and in later videos or have have received similar comments but thought it might be worth you getting advice on this piece as you could have self righting issues which could be a risk (particularly if you are kitting out above the water line). Anyway, Happy Christmas and good luck, will follow with interest 👍, Pat
Nice video: first I thought it would be way too long, but in the end I couldn’t stop watching since all parts were very interesting! 😊 One question: could you please clarify where you’re going to “drive” the boat from? That’s still unclear to me… Are you going to rebuild a piloting space at the top (above kitchen and bathroom)?
looking great! wondering what your plan is with steering and engine. You have everything removed to have a boat without engine? or is a new engine going to be placed?
What a great project, dude, I congratulate you for your encouragement and desire to achieve your dream, now just be patient and put a lot of work and dedication that in a while you will be sailing on your own ship, how do you know if Captain Jack Sparrow in person will help you send a resume to be part of your crew hehehhe, greetings and good luck 😃😉👍🏻👍🏻
"if they steal them... fair play?" 😂 also I think you... might? want to reconsider not having any interior piloting space. with the weather in the UK being what it is, it's entirely likely you'll be needing to move her during inclement conditions, and only having a pilot station outside may be increasingly miserable. what an interior station might look like is up to you. that front window in the existing pilothouse is REALLY small and I think not practical for sustained operations -- if it's one of the ones you're going to expand that could still work. if you keep the helm station and its seating fairly small (maybe with some collapsible/move-out-of-the-way-able components?) I think you could probably still execute on your very good ideas re: the bathroom.
I toyed with this idea but it actually wouldn't. Because I have enough beam width, it makes far more sense to go horizontal. I've also never been a fan of V beds on boats, I think they tend to be cramped/awkward to get into
You cant just have it proped up with makeshift pieces of wood and things.. Design a proper base/landing/bed for it with additional storage a built in generator and hot tub..
Hey will it be possible to purchase one of your tshirts in the future or was this a limited thing? I looovve your project & the design of the shirts😍😍😍
I just saw on your video that you removed the ballast, OMG what prompted you to do that. The amount of ballast in the keel was engineered by Duh engineers to make it stable. Now you have to pay another enginner as in Marine engineer read fnning expensive to recalculate your ballast. Unless this is done you won't get insurance, no insurance company in the UK will touch you until a professional marine survey is completed.
Have the seat belts made into a webbing hammock that can be hung out for occasional extra bed use or emergency storage maybe
I was actually thinking they could make straps from the bed
I'm definitely looking into this. Unfortunately, red and black are not the intended colour choices so I am looking into the possibility of dyeing them first !
@@orlalifeboat8779 if they won’t be on view unless needed I’d just roll with the original colours! More of a talking point. I very much doubt they will dye!
You could also get them weaves together to make cushion covers for seating
Or just use them as overhead storage, especially for clothes. Wherever you have vertical space above you that you don’t need, ie it leads to the windows, hang the netting and store stuff up there.
I am so glad to finally see some long format videos! I’ve been hoping you would decide to do this. Forget the people hurrying you, and enjoy the process. Remember you are sharing your journey, not churning out entertainment. I can wait to see where this takes you! Keep it up!
thank you very much Mike, you're spot on!
Incredible video, sorry for the language, but I speak Spanish, but I didn't want to stop encouraging your work and your project
from uruguay south america, a big hug
thank you very much Diego, much appreciated !!
Enjoyed the longer more detailed video. The only time frame you have to work to is your own and nobody else's business. Looking forward to future episodes.
thank you very much Craig, I couldn't agree more !
I do have a question. You mentioned using it in the canals. How does the width of this measure up to a typical canal boat and wont it be too tall to go under bridges and walkways? Cracking video! No need for high tech super smooth over edited stuff. True a personable is brilliant.
Love your ideas. Well done
thanks so much Lewis, I really appreciate it !
For a first long form video this feels super natural. Looking forward to seeing the progress
Great first episode thank you
thanks so much !
Great video. Masses of information. You are not being slow! Heavy jobs, laborious jobs, specialist jobs and electrical, plumbing and fit out to come. It’s huge. For most people it would be weekends taking 5 years.
ahah I'm hoping it won't take 5 years but you're spot on. A lot more work than meets the eye !!
Really looking forward to following along the journey and to see how this turns out,,👍
thank you very much Wayne !
I Feel That Living Full Time In A Lifeboat As My Tiny Home Is A Good Idea As I Live Near A Place That Floods A Lot In The USA + Love Ya UA-cam Lots and Lots
Love the short videos but being on this platform will be amazing.
Love the content so far 👌🏼
I really enjoyed your first vid.
Take your time and work thorough.
thank you very much !!
ive been waiting for this, orla is awesone!
ahah thanks so much !
excellent project, greetings from argentina !!!
gracias luis !

yes I think I will although hopefully I will dye them a different colour first ! Yes re insulation, the areas where she is one layer of glass thick (and without poly foam) I definitely will be
In the little area at the end of the kitchen you could always put a nice bean bag chair!
The old foam headrests could you make them into a headboard or the back of a seating area?
I did consider using them to stuff the sofa seats but I think they might be a little too old/mouldy
Great video. It’s good to see longer videos I’ve been watching your videos on TikTok
Nice video, came hear from tiktok. Following for a long time
thanks willem, glad you enjoyed !
the seat belts weaved together could make a cool art piece :)
I think it is wonderful I am looking forward to seeing her lived in!
Well done ..first video is a resounding success!
ahah thanks James !
very exciting and interesting. will follow you and that build
Much love! i really enjoy the longer behind the scenes type videos!
This is brilliant! Love the long format videos. Thanks Johnny
Been waiting on this video and was hoping you made it. Thus build is very interesting.
thanks ever so much !!
Very interesting, and Thank you for sharing your journey…
thank you very much Richard !
Great! Been enjoying tiktok but was hoping for more!
thanks so much, I can't promise much with these videos but hopefully they provide a little more info
Great first video ! Can’t wait to see how your built goes and where you go with it !
thank you very much Agnès !!
love this video! Great job so far and just adding to the work load, this video was probably what we all needed 😀. Keep up the work i'm rooting for you, and Orla!
ahah thanks Jonas, hopefully I can keep these up !

Totally agree. I really don't like shorts on YT and I enjoyed this longer video a whole lot better.
Great first video mate! Loved all the information, can’t wait to see the progress no matter how long it takes! 😁
thanks so much Harry, much appreciated!
Looking great! Can’t wait to see the future progress! You have a fan. 🎉

I’d say leave the standing rails original colour, nice to show past life in a way
I think I will paint the boat and then re-install as orange and see how I feel. I can always change the colour later down the line
Great, you have donea long video come across from Instagram, pre ordered my t-shirt yesterday keep up the good work
thanks ever so much Richard, that is incredibly kind of you !

TAKE YOUR TIME ! You are designing a boat from the "ground " up . 👍 And your working alone .
Great video bud. Have you checked out any narrow boats you might get inspiration from them.
thanks Kory, yes I follow lots of brilliant narrowboat channels !
Loving this. Keep it up!
thanks so much Matt !

Add a fold down decking along the side so you can walk around outside underway
Go have a look at Alex Hibbert, who is doing similar but using his vessel for Arctic use. Alex left the engine etc, in the vessel but has had to add over 2 tonnes of ballast to bring the waterline deeper for stability.
i would leave the small keel just close it in....would probably help the boat track more straight helping a small outboard drive it better

I enjoyed the longer format video over the short. Any thoughts on using the center recess in the floor for more than underfloor storage?
Just been recommended to you by Paul and Carrie (LB)! Anyway, great video ❤
Great first long video! Are you planning to do solar?
Been waiting for this
Great job man.. really enjoying this series. New sub from me pal.. 👊👏👏👏👏
Thanks for the introduction, I am sure you have seen Alan?🎉
Well done

Maybe I didn't heard, but what is the boat size? And nice layout choice, I liked the bath solution.
Definitely do long video's and don't worry about editing raw videos are better 🙂 looking forward to seeing more 🙂👌

looking great!

I just wonder how it would get under some of the bridges on the canals. You may have to stick to rivers
"if they steal them... fair play?" 😂 also I think you... might? want to reconsider not having any interior piloting space. with the weather in the UK being what it is, it's entirely likely you'll be needing to move her during inclement conditions, and only having a pilot station outside may be increasingly miserable. what an interior station might look like is up to you. that front window in the existing pilothouse is REALLY small and I think not practical for sustained operations -- if it's one of the ones you're going to expand that could still work. if you keep the helm station and its seating fairly small (maybe with some collapsible/move-out-of-the-way-able components?) It would be nice to put a deck on the stern.
Hi, I’m looking to buy one myself have you any recommendations?
Where did orla come from? Did it serve on a ship or an oil rig
a v birth style bed would be a better use of the space
I toyed with this idea but it actually wouldn't. Because I have enough beam width, it makes far more sense to go horizontal. I've also never been a fan of V beds on boats, I think they tend to be cramped/awkward to get into
You cant just have it proped up with makeshift pieces of wood and things.. Design a proper base/landing/bed for it with additional storage a built in generator and hot tub..
I would back an openplan arrange for its interior, with the only partition being for a WC/shower..
Hey will it be possible to purchase one of your tshirts in the future or was this a limited thing? I looovve your project & the design of the shirts😍😍😍
The fastest way to do something is do it RIGHT ONE TIME!
When will there be an update
Did you get her off of Alan up in Aberdeen?
Make a loft bedroom
Just a thought
Good taste in a hat ;-)
Waiting for new video

new sub channel looks cool..& I just invented a new saying instead of more bang for your buck how about more squid for a quid lol
Also perhaps tell people that you're first priority is spending time with your elderly grandfather..
