I could never lose big fish like that with a smile on my face like you do. Very informative video. I think I'll leave the tent at home next time i go out and try this method 👍🏼
Haha... yeah, I like to stay positive even when losing fish. I've got a smile on most of the time. Really helps with the mood. Fortunately, I land enough fish to keep me happy, and I enjoy just hooking fish even if I lose them. I'm glad you liked the video. Give it a try!
That was really entertaining! I’ve found moving around a lot while ice fishing definitely works! That’s why I’m always hesitating to set up my tent,I hate committing to one spot😂
Cool video, I think doing the same thing for a perch lake/video would be a good vid, especially considering they are big on hole hoping to target them 👍🏻 keep them coming
Yeah... well it some of the perch videos... you don't actually see how many times we actually move and how many holes we drill some days. Can be ridiculous. Might have to show that in a video some day like you said. Will have to try it will different species. See how many spots I can catch fish at in a day on a lake.
Thanks for the comments! Yeah I love seeing how big bows interact with lures. Because they've probably encountered a few along the way and always getting smarter.
Great Vid Doc. I learned a lot in this one and am eager to give'r a go and see if can catch some bows. I couldn't figure out in your video if you are watching down the hole on your phone or if you can just see in the shallow water?
It's shallow water that is super clear and I just look straight down the hole with my eye's only and can see the fish swimming around. When I have my phone out, I was just making screenshots of my location on Google Maps when I'd see a fish for the map I made. Or I'm just messaging people, posting on Instagram... that's all i was doing on the phone.
@@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures gotcha, figured maybe you had the bluetooth to the go pro. approx what size hook is on those 7mm jigs that were coming unbottoned?
@danielgraham4717 i was using a 1/16 ounce lead jig most of the video. That's what I was losing most of the fish on. I actually landed more on this tungsten 7mm jig, which I do not know the hook size. It's small, though. This is my oldest gopro, so I don't think it has any wireless capabilities. I just view the footage at home.
@@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures oh ok that makes sense. I was thinking a size 10 jig hook should be about sufficient. I tied up my take on a red-sided shiner pattern with buck tail and peacock hurl on an @jig_geek 1/32 jig head, but I think the 1/0 hook is way too big for ice. it actually got a couple bites though.
This is actually my old gopro and it is just floating in the underwater case with the Gopro Life Jacket, orange colored float on the back window. Works perfect for capturing footage down the hole.
I personally think that they can play a big part in fish feeding activity. Pressure changes definitely seem to turn bites on and off. I always think that if the pressure is stable for 3-5 days you are better off fishing then since fishing is usually good. A falling barometer can also be really good. I find a rising barometer to a high pressure system is the hardest to fish with the least activity typically. The moon has its ups and downs for me. I don't pay enough attention to is really. I've had great fishing on full moons and terrible fishing on full moon. So not really sure. Sometimes day time bite slows during full moon because fish are more active at night with the added light. Trout, pike and walleye do feed in low light and night. Perch don't feed at night. So perch are not really affected by the moon as much I would say.
I am not sure if I could actually get into this lake now as winter progresses. Someone just told me they tried to get in with Chains even on their tires this last Saturday and didn't make it. So if you have a snowmobile or side by side, you might make it in. I fish all winter long. I fish January, february, march and sometimes in April if ice lasts. The thickness doesn't matter to me, I have a power auger. The fish can become less active as winter progresses and fishing will be more challenging with less fish usually caught. But you never know. I just enjoy being out and trying to figure it out even if I do get skunked the odd time. It happens usually mid winter if it is going to.
@@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures Love it! We get out hunting a fair bit in the fall, so we try to pick a choose a little when and where we fish. My son and I often miss the early ice because of our love for hunting. Typically the fishing cools off after new years because of lack of plant growth and oxygen below the snow covered thicker ice not allowing as much sunlight in and the fish become lethargic. So I’m told I’m no expert. Apparently the prairie lakes get more sun during these months. We watch every video you post, and it’s pretty cool to see you fish some of these local spots and be fairly successful at it. Thanks again for entertaining us!
@@landmarkdesigns9667 Yeah Prairie lakes may get more sunshine in the winter, but they don't have green weed growth under the snow and ice in the winter. I would say there is a method to picking lakes to fish throughout the year. Try to fish lakes that have more recently frozen. As winter progresses fish the deeper and larger lakes. Like switching to Monte, Stump, Paul or the lakes up around the Cariboo region. These lakes will not have the sharp decline in oxygen and usually better fishing. Kokanee bite well through the winter too.
that’s great advice. I’ve been thinking about switching to Kokanee as well in the slower months. You’re also right with these mild winters, the higher mountain lakes will freeze much sooner than others. One of my favourite lakes I’m not sure will freeze this year.
I haven't lived in Alberta since 2005. Currently living in British Columbia. Still have family back in Alberta so I visit sometimes and always do some fishing when I am there. This video is from British Columbia.
Great to see how much fun you are having. With your hooking success but losing them, it's like watching a dark comedy! I'm not a big fan on bigger hooks, but maybe you need to go one size up (bigger). Thanks for sharing. Awesome @thefishingdoctorsadventures
Thanks for watching, yes I agree that I don't like using bigger hooks. I think it may have helped with holding some fish on. The trade off is if you go bigger there is a chance that less of the bite in the first place.
@canadians5172 I have already ice fished 9 different lakes this ice season. I like ice fishing many different lakes and have videos on many different lakes over the last 15 years including lakes in 3 US states and 3 Canadian Provinces. This is the first season I've fished this lake. Probably won't be back this year. I heard it's pretty sketchy getting in there now. Two guys I know didn't make it in due to ice and snow since I was in there.
@@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures I haven't been there this season and won't be. But in Dec of 2025 I'll hit it again. For now I'll focus around 70 and 100 miles house areas :)
I thought I shared lots of information in this video. My videos are full of lots of information for those who want to watch them. I share pretty much everything I do to catch fish. Many people have told me they have caught their first trout after watching my video. Lakes are not important... if the lake name doesn't show up in the title, description or video commentary then I tend to not put it in the comment section either. If you read all the comments sometimes people try to guess the lakes.
If you message me on a private account, like instagram, and want to discuss fishing then that is a better way then open forum for specifics. Some people have info to share and with those people I do discuss information on fisheries.
Wow! Those are some definitely good size rainbows!! Do you fish lots with the Tungsten? Being first ice-wow! Do you fish shallow in the morning? Would that apply more to Alberta lakes or B.C lakes. I’m just curious.
@daleprokopiuk9400 yes, I use tungsten jigs a lot. Way more sensitive feel with them. More dense and smaller size. Fish are more likely to bite small presentation in pressured lakes. I always start shallow for trout and work deeper if not in shallow. I do this in alberta and bc. Some days they are out in the middle of the lake suspended anywhere from right under ice, mid column or bottom. So have to search if not on the shores.
At least on this day it seems like that and if you watch to the end of the video I discuss this and how I would attack the fishery the next time I try with different gear and hook sizes.
Really? I am not really aware of a line that is less visible than a low test fluorocarbon fishing line. Are you??? I assume you have not yet taken high school level physics or physics in a University level setting. Since you are making that statement most likely from looking at the line looking down the hole right? Or are you just saying that because you think 6 pound test is too heavy for these fish and I need to go lighter? Looking down the hole you are seeing a different refractive angle off the line than the fish see. The fish approach the line at a 90 degree angle. You are looking at the line at a 0 to 10 degree angle looking down the hole. The cameral is also looking through a piece of plastic, air and glass lens before it hits the censor. FYI Fluorocarbon line is thought to be the least visible line to fish. And they really don't seem to be able to see the line in any of these underwater shots from what I can see. Most of them were biting the hook. Since my line is "Way too visible" You should tell me what would be a better option, since you are the expert it sounds like. I want to hear your opinion.
