The Hunchback musical is incredible and it never being on Broadway is a CRIME. I highly recommed you listen to "Made of Stone" from it too. There are a few specific parts of that song that literally made me stop the song and yell expletives because it was just that good lol. No other song has made me do that!

      It's just Phenomenal!!!!
I also just discovered that - in the original German ... Quasi went UP EVEN HIGHER and ended super soft. I have mixed feelings but damn it's astounding regardless

Totally agree!!! It should have made it to Broadway. It’s just gorgeous composition through and through 💗💗💗aside from the beautiful show stopping songs, I’m absolutely enamored by the choral harmonies. They’re glorious.

As a disabled person, and an all too frequent people watcher, this song moves me to tears every single time. Quasimodo is such a beautiful character and Michael Arden embraces him fully, humanity and flaws first and foremost. A masterclass indeed

I can't believe as a musical theatre coach you've never discovered this song before this video. The Hunchback is potentially one of, and for me absolutely is, the top show(s) of all time. The soundtrack is perfect. PERFECT. Arden's performance is so raw and perfect. And he never sings this song the same way twice. He lives in the lyrics and each time he sings, he interprets it differently and equally as flawless every last time.

Michael Arden is such a star. It's kind of a shame he's gone on to directing instead of performing, but we get great performances from his directing. I got to see a touring production of Hunchback that he directed, it was amazing. The lead was a deaf actor who used ASL during his performance, and his singing was done by one of the gargoyles.
Andy Mientus is a lucky man.
Michael starred as Tom Sawyer in Deaf West's production of Big River, and in the off Broadway production of "Bare", He also starred in Hunchback in San Diego.

This is some of the best music any Disney film has ever had. It's a much darker story (even for Disney, who doesn't shy away from dark stories), which is probably why the masses didn't flock to it as much as the other movies you mentioned. Also, the main character is deformed, not a beautiful princess or a cute lion cub, or even a Beast who is really a cursed prince. But the music, oh heaven!!!!!!

  • @smlb1352

You mentioned that he directed the Deaf West End Sprinf Awakening and what's amazing is he took the sign language he learned and applied it to Quasi who is mostly deaf from the bells and added an even deeper layer to the character
Also he is a Julliard drop out. He left to be on Broadway in Big River

I was fortunate to have seen it when it was at La Jolla and it was amazing, one of my favorite musicals I have ever seen. As Lora K. noted below - IT IS A CRIME that is never made it to Broadway. The cast, the music, and everything was brilliant. It was years ago and I am getting goosebumps thinking about it. I am extremely grateful for that opportunity and memory.

I was at Notre Dame twice. The last one, sadly a month after she catched fire. I plan another Trip next year, when she is opened to the Public again. And last year I saw the German version of this Musical in Vienna. It was a dream come true. I will never forget these hours I spend in the Theatre so close to my favorite characters

Marc Daniel Patrick the original voice actor of the 90’s original production of ‘The Hunchback of Notredame’ is worth a listen. Tom Hulce (the actor who played Mozart in the great 80’s ‘Amadeus’ movie ) is the actor who dubbed the original Quasimodo is such an amazing actor and such an amazing singing voice.

Michael Arden is one amazing guy, so is his work with Deaf West. Why Hunchback never made it to Broadway still baffles me to this day. Agree with the other comment, it’s a CRIME it didn’t. And with a cast that includes Michael Arden, Patrick Page, Ciara Renee! This would’ve been one hell (fire) of a show! 😁

Michael Arden is great! There are a few clips of him doing his thing (and EXCELLING at it. Lol) floating around the UA-cam's. I'm actually really surprised you haven't seen more of his stuff! He was the first iteration of Peter in BARE 's original off-Broadway run. He was Pippin at Deft West in 2009, and he played Dickon in Secret Garden. Most of his performance stuff is off-Broadway or staged concerts though, so I guess he's developed more of a niche, indie fanbase. (I feel so hipster). Anyway, he's stellar, and you should totally check out more of his stuff!

Not Hunchback of Notre Dame but I also love Michael Arden's rendition of Run Away With Me. It's a slightly different take from Jeremy Jordan's which I know is also really popular- more shy and awkward whereas Jeremy's is a bit more confident and laidback- but suits him really well.

I love The Hunchback! Saw it in the 90s here in Germany and again when it was put up as a new performance a few years ago. The stage setting was so minimalistic and yet so conplex in all the light work that made up the stage design in that first run. I think it was slightly more classic stage design in the new production, but equally impressive. It's definitely a soundtrack I go back to every now and then.

  • @bonniemarter4851
    @bonniemarter4851 2 роки тому +1

I totally agree! This proves that there's plenty of opportunity to bring the character out through a performance, even if you're just singing at the piano. Who is paying attention to every note being perfect, when you're wrapped up in the amazing performance unfolding before you? So much more enjoyable to watch, for me, than a sanitized studio version with perfect pitch. That being said, there's room for both types of performances. Better to ask "What do I want to achieve with this performance?" And go from there. If you want to show off vocals and a beautiful melody, a polished cover of a song makes sense. But if you want to perform as the character, or even to show off your acting as well as your singing skills, this is how you do it. Makes me want to see the whole show! Which I think, in itself, is the highest compliment to a single performance--did you make me want more of the show? So brilliant!! 👏👏👏

The music of the hunchback of notra dame was written by alan menken but also Stephen Schwartz. Of all the Disney renaissance films this soundtrack feels like Broadway.you should really check it out. It also has arguable best villain song in all of Disney Hellfire. The opening is also phenomenal.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame has always been one of my favorite movies and this song in particular has always been my number one disney song to sing and to just listen to. It especially hit harder when I went on my first mission trip and we'd complain about this or that, but we were surrounded by such loving people who were grateful for every opportunity and connection in their lives. It took the wind right out of our sails and when I heard this song again afterwards, it just kind of cemented that lesson in my heart- that I should take the time to be thankful for the people and things in my life and not take them for granted.

@LeadingBlind The video of the German production is on UA-cam. I believe this was the prior to the US shows. Much darker, but wow, it's terrific! Not a kiddie show, to say the least. Also, the German lead is apparently a popular singer in that country and cut a music video for "Out There."
For those interested, the musical didn't make it to Broadway for several reasons: Firstly, there was a significant Union dispute. Schwartz wanted the choir as scripted to portray Notre Dame symbolically (truly a genius move). He didn't want a projected photo or it just being part of a static set. He wanted the structure to be a character of sorts, to be alive. And he wanted real choristers to perform the sacred music (Latin chant). The Union stated that the choir members would have to join the union and pay dues. That would have busted the budget, so the musical went regional. They did play at a theatre in the area, off Broadway. I believe it was on 5th Ave (?) and there was another theatre in NJ. they used as well.Otherwise, the theatres were mostly out west. The Schwartz production did make the seasonal Broadway tours schedule in various states although not technically on Broadway.
Also, Disney was concerned about family groups with young children that would purchase tickets in advance for the musical, expecting it to be more like the Disney movie. So tourist dollars and brand considerations were in the mix to move the musical to a non-Broadway venue.
In addition, at the same time this musical was being developed, a little musical called "Frozen" was in the works. Guess which one they chose for the Broadway gig?! Disney went with the instant money maker, of course. Corporate Headquarters didn't want a darker musical for more mature audience members associated with the Disney "Happiest Place on Earth" branding.
So it was somewhat a perfect storm that kept it from playing Broadway. That's how I understand the situation.
Trivia: Did anyone see T3 on AGT last season? Jim Hogan was the voice of Quasimodo for a deaf actor who played the part at a theatre in the Sacramento area. The sizzle reel is on UA-cam. The musical was played in the round rather than on a traditional stage. Amazing!
Although Jim Hogan and the deaf actor in the Sacramento area musical were incredible; however, in my book, Michael Arden is the best, all-around Quasimodo, imho. His acting is impeccable and his singing is beyond words. Sublime. Absolute perfection. My bucket wishlist is to hear Michael Arden sing this song (and other Broadway hits) live and in person. He is such a well-rounded performer. Of course, he nails the singing, but Arden's acting is impeccable as well. He is, absolutely, the total package!

I got to see the Hunchback at the 5th Ave Theater in Seattle a few years ago. It was amazing! The hunchback was played by Josh Castille who is a phenomenal Deaf actor (who was in Deaf West's production of Spring Awakening on Broadway by the way - which was directed by Michael Arden!). His voice interpreter was EJ Cordona (a member of Voctave). EJ talked about how he sang differently every performance based off how Josh was performing the role. Hands down, one of the most awesome theater experiences I have seen! ua-cam.com/video/nRax8BmaSto/v-deo.html

Please, please, please, react to the French version of Notre Dame de Paris, written by Luc Plamondon!!! Garou, Daniel Lavoie and Bruno Pelletier are awesome in it!

The best musical I ever saw, was Hunchback of Notre Dame 🙏
Saw it in a danish production, by Fredericia theater, and they were so amazing, and Lars Mølsted, who played Quisimodo did an amazing job!
    Please do more Hunchback 🙏
    Preferably “Made of stone” 🤞
Or “the bells of Notre Dame” the choir alone is enough to give it a go ☝️💪

I think I saw the movie once when I was younger and didn't care for the it. As an adult, thinking I should see again after this performance.

This is one of my favorite songs from a really underrated musical. Too dark and mature for the Disney audience at the time I think, the music is mournful and gorgeous.

Of corse the melody is amazing since the song was written by Alan Mencken and Steven Swartz
