It’s by far one of the best film adaptations of a musical ever. The best Crystal, Chiffon, and Ronette you could ever ask for, Levi Stubbs(!) even Rick Moranis with no musical experience really embodies Seymour as well as anyone ever could. And so many of the choices they made were just great, like the manic tempo of the title song, it’s so perfect that no other production has even attempted it that way, they always do it much slower, seemingly knowing they can’t top that version so a totally different approach is the best bet.
Lol thats kind of a long-winded way of saying I agree with you, but yes! It’s amazing. I think Ashman and Menken’s hands-on involvement probably has a lot to do with that

Ellen Green is such a legend, ranks up there with Liza Minnelli in Cabaret for me as one of the best musical performances ever. I’m glad this Audrey is clearly making very different character choices but her voice - while terrific - isn’t quite up to Green’s impossibly high standard. With this part, it’s not fair, but you can’t help but compare everyone to her. Especially at a Broadway level.

Alan Menken singing in the chorus of his own play is surreal. The author (or coauthor) behind the most influential musicals of tge modern day, who introduced most of us to musical theater, is rught there, able to demonstrate everything, explain everything, and do everything he ever did.
