  • In this video I review an aspect of Red Yeast Rice that many people miss: the "cholesterol lowering" ingredient is the same as livastatin (Mevacor(r)).

Well, this explains the use of red yeast rice and leg cramps at night. Thank you! I quit taking a statin for that very reason!

Like you, and as a Natural Health professional, I refuse to take statins, however, my poor Dr. who is a darling and works with me, not easy, would like to see better cholesterol numbers so for the yearly blood cholesterol test, I am trying some Red Yeast Rice (Walmart) and adding some CQ10 for good measure. It is all a "show" for the Health Plan. I do not believe Cholesterol is the bad guy, here. I am trying it for a couple of weeks before the test and also cutting back on eggs and steak, my faves.
Would like to get back to you and report.
    Thank you!

My cholesterol recently dropped a little and the only thing I've done differently lately is taking vitamin B supplement (not for cholesterol reasons, but my doctor identified a deficiency.) If the trend continues, I may make a video on that.

@@chuckleezodiac24 HI CHUCK, APPARENTLY I DID NOT TAKE IT LONG ENOUGH BUT IF IT IS A WEAKER STATIN, AS FAR AS THE CHEMICAL STRUCTURE IT SHOULD WORK, AS THEY DO. THIS TIME I WILL TRY IT A LITTLE LONGER SO THAT MY GP WILL BE PLEASED WITH MY CHOL NUMBERS. IT IS A CHARADE BUT THE HEALTH PLANS TRULY PRESSURE HER AND I LIKE HER, SHE WORKS WITH ME AND THERE ARE FEW MDS THAT DO THAT TO PEOPLE LIKE ME THAT BELIEVES THAT A SUBSTANCE SO EASILY MADE BY YOUR BODY AND SO UBIQUITOUS SHOULD NOT MALIGNED AS IT HAS BEEN. I WOULD PERSONALLY USE THE RYR FOR A SHORT TIME AND INCLUDE THE COQ10 AND WATCH FOR ANY NEGATIVE EFFECTS. FOR INFLAMMATION I USE OTHER TESTS SUCH AS C REACTIVE PROTEIN. I DO BELIEVE THE NUMBER ON TRYGLYCERIDES IS A MUCH MORE VALUABLE TEST, DIRECTLY AFFECTED BY WHAT WE CHOOSE TO EAT, SUCH AS TOO MANY SWEETS AND THAT CORRELATES MORE WITH CVD AND RISK OF DIABETES. I KEEP MY SUGARS LOW AND USE NATURAL SWEETENERS AND A MORE KETO/PALEO DIET. HOPE ALL GOES WELL WITH YOU!

Lovastatin, what a horrific drug! The last 3 years I took it,I had memory problems, pain, global amnesia, vomiting, diherria, and finally quit. Now,Dr. is hounding me to take it but I won't.

I was on atorvastatin, rosuvastatin, and pitavastain, (and apparently, lovastatin without knowing it.) I had memory problems, pain, fortunately no vomiting. I did have a global amnesia event but I had been off the statins for almost 5 years before it happened. I often wonder if the statins could somehow still have been the cause, as unolikely as that seems to me. One researcher I consulted with told me she suspected maybe the memory problems that were occurring when I was on statins made me more susceptible to Transient Global Amnesia or perhaps were an indicator that I was more susceptible to such things. Global amnesia is a known (though rare) adverse effect of statins.

Years ago when I was first diagnosed with high cholesterol (307), the dr wanted to put me on a statin, but I asked if I could do it with diet and exercise instead. He gave me 4 months to do it, and when it was checked after that, I had gotten it down to 135. He looked at the number and asked me if I knew what red yeast rice was. He thought I had cheated by taking red yeast rice, bc he couldn't believe I had actually done it with diet and exercise!! I told him that yes, I knew what it was, but no, I had not taken any, bc it is a statin, except an unregulated form where you'd never know your dosage. Plus, why would I cheat, when I really wanted to know if diet and exercise could legimately work? I think he did believe me that I hadn't, but he was suspicious initially! (And NO, I had not taken any!!)

Good Job! 135 is incredibly low to get from over 300. I did manage (momentarily) to get mine to about 150 with lifestyle changes (extreme exercise.) For me though, I couldn't maintain that level of exercise from a logistic point of view (10 hours a day for 5 weeks) but it was a fascinating experiment and result.

@@mystatinfreelife Wow! I never did THAT much exercise, but more than now anyway. What I did worked, and it centered around a daily goal of 10,000 steps, but I guess I got lazy. Now I'm inspired; I'm going to the treadmill right now!

@@tkat6442 Well I covered my experiment in my video on exercise. It was a special case: I hiked about 500 miles in 5 weeks on the Appalachian Trail. Not something I can do often as you can imagine! My wife of 43 years still misses me a lot when I go away for that long and she has limited me to two-week trips in the future 🙂.

I tried taking this, I researched and found the brand with the near prescription dose. Oh the pain. I never thought a pill could make me feel so bad. I tried again about a month later and had the flu symptoms with the pain. My numbers are really bad but I just can't use this stuff.

    • @mystatinfreelife

Yeah, for many of us, just as bad as taking an actual statin. Are your numbers really bad? Or is that just your doctor's opinion?

That's a good question to which my honest answer is "I don't know." I'm not sure it has ever been studied.
