Thanks for an informative video. I’m sure my popup sucks and living in lockdown in Melbourne I haven’t been out for awhile so I’m going to be a little rusty :( I’ll be practising your technique til I can get out there again. Can’t wait!
This is great stuff. As it happens, I previously stumbled across your older pop up video. In that one your pop up seemed to be of the more « explosive « variety as opposed to the more recent step through. Is this correct and, if so, was it a conscious decision? Just wondering as in my mid fifties my once explosive pop up is more a damp squib and Im looking at rejuvenating it (especially this week where it’s back to 5mm wettie and boots).
yep conscious decision. the power or effort (speed) should be dictated by the wave. the softer and more fluid you can be in the process, the better it is for an easier transition
cool video, thanks man. I notice such a difference in my pop up from when the waves are flat mush to when the wave face is steep and fast. flat mush is like a burpee as in gravity is not your friend. steeper and faster waves seem to make it easier for a smooth pop up transition. also, instead of a single motion pop up, i now try and first extend my arms, push up style, then bring my legs underneath me., two separate movements that blend.
I purposefully surf small waves as a strength or cross training workout, if you will. I can't tell you how much it has helped when the waves are bigger....makes it so much easier.
@@stephenlepore4476 I'm on Oahu. I have a spot I go to where no one goes because it's too small....turns out, it's perfect for this type of training. Woul love to surf your area one day....but I'm thinking I need a good wetsuit! 😃
better waves always allow for a smoother pop up IMO (can be a bit different if it's barreling takeoffs). a good wave will help give you speed and drop away from you a bit so it's easier to get space underneath the body to bring the legs through.
we get that question a lot nowadays.... and I reckon it's too late to change, unless you want to put in the effort and time to switch one of them. for many it's probably not worth the time to bring a switch stance up to speed. with that said, surf / skating switch does make it difficult to practice on a surf skate. you could, to at least feel the patterns, and then mentally you'd need to make the switch.
@@SurfStrengthCoach thanks chris, does your program cover the mentally making the switch? I might just have to tough it up and do it. I think my surfing would improve alot better. I will be trying your app soon, and if you have any recommendations on where to start!
Hey Cris, been smashing the Perfect Pop Up for about 10 weeks now and have never been as flexible as I am now 🤙🏼 absolutely frothing on it. I’ve doubled up on phase 2 deliberately but it’s working a treat man. Thanks for taking the time to put that content on the app 🤘🏼 it’s seriously changed my surfing. Quick question, do you recommend the cardboard surfer or the 12 week program next? I’m over in West Oz 🤙🏼
LEGEND! stoked to hear that man! WA... a good place to be right now. in terms of programs, it depends whether you want skill and technique work, OR predominantly fitness and training. If technique, go with Cardboard or Surf Skate. if you want more training and fitness, go with Surf Athlete

Cris - I can't remember where I saw it originally, but I'm trying to find the pop-up video where you used the coffee and "bring me those beers" analogy... for some reason - that video resonated with me. I'm in enrolled in the pop-up program but can't seem to find it in there and was wondering if it is posted somewhere else. Thanks.
sorry mike... but I don't even know man. I have way too many videos to keep track of. maybe it's in the pop up program compilation videos... but I'm not entirely sure. or the shortboard pop up tutorial in the pop up program.
Hi Cris, I've collecting your short vids on surf exercise for quite some years and have employed your techniques into my normal morning routine and some in my gym routine. I'm now 62 years old and been surfing since about 12 years old. I'm supple, flexible, have good mobility, balance ok and still reasonably strong. Recently had an almost 1 year break from surf due to rotator cuff surgery but am now good to go. Problem is I now pop up with my feet too far forward. Tried dragging my back foot at pop up but still end up too far forward. Have you any advice you could give me? Greg
Hey Greg - I don't know if you've gotten this worked out but I've been working on my pop-up again too after a few decades where I never really had to think about it. What's helping me is making a conscious effort to drop my hands back lower along my ribs when I push off. It's helping get my feet positioned better and it's giving me better separation between my body and the board. As I've been getting older, I think my hands have been creeping forward and I started 'pulling' myself up instead of pushing myself up (if that makes sense) As a result I would kick the rail with my toe trying to get it in position and when I did get it on the deck, it could be anywhere
@@apctest8359 strangely I worked out exactly what you have recommended, with hands a little further back (5 -10cm) my hips tend to come up higher which allows my front foot to come through far easier and plant a bit further back. I've worked on my back foot to be closer to the pad. Many thanks for your reply!
Thx coach, great content. 52 yo surfer been at for 36-37 years. Still love it but need the maintenance now. Question, I thought you had a episode with just suspension strap workout. If you do can you let me know what episode? Thx again
Hi Cris, great to see you revisit the pop-up, I've watched your earlier ones many times over the years (and also bought your app). The spider-man stretches you recommend have been extremely helpful. One thing I still struggle with sometimes, perhaps due to shorter arms, is getting my front leg through "the gap" when popping up. It happens when I'm tired, so I'm building upper body strength by practicing popups (10-15) every day.
thanks for the support roger, I appreciate it. you need to get the upper body out of the way. often this comes down to head positioning, as well as people keeping their hands on the board for too long. those may be some things to consider.
Couple of questions: Out here in the Southern US- the waves aren’t huge and the speed of the wave is much less than that in the Pacific. Hence lack of momentum behind you. Any suggestions regarding pops with this scenario? Second- with a long board- what’s the best position to start from- feet off end of board or closer to the front of the board? Awesome video-many ahas. Thanks!
longboard your feet are generally on the board, so you can use your toes as a starting point if needed. obviously that wouldn't work on a shortboard, so you can only pop off the knees. pop ups on slower waves.... you need to get up smoother and with less effort in a sense. since you're moving slower the board is actually less stable. surfboards become more stable when they have more inertia. since the board is "less stable" you pop up should be smoother and less "poppy" so you don't disturb the planing surface as much.
It is amazing that you can bring your legs into position without springing off your toes. (I guess that's mandatory with a shortboard). You must have killer core strength.
Cris, watching you pop up, I noticed that you plant your back foot first. No one ever really taught me and for 15+ years, I basically bring both feet under at the same time. I'm a longboarder, don't know if that matters....but do I need to change this? I'm not having problems...I just thought it was so interesting to see this broken down.
One more inquiry: I’m super flexible. Lots of different adventure sport. But continue to experience pain in the hip/ buttock joint area. Been using tennis balls regularly to massage... but wondering is there something else to look at/help here? Technique issues?
Hey coach, I Always watch your videos, the´ve helped me a lot, your content is amazing, but please buy a Lavalier mic, they aren´t that expensive and will improve the intelligibility of your voice, specially in reverberant rooms like this. Cheers!
thanks. check out my more recent videos, they're all using a mic... but I'm fairly unhappy with it. It's a rode brand lapel mic, and seems to not pickup the highest quality audio.
I’m a skater goofy but when it comes to my pop up I can’t seem to get that right leg up front. I can do the flat foot squat and I can bring my knee to my chest, I just can’t seem to get that leg up fast enough. Could it be my technique? But I am able to pop up regular foot, just it feels much more comfortable surfing goofy....
