Most reliable car I've owned, I have clocked up 231 thousand miles in the 15 years I've owned it with just routine services. The best journey I had in it was a trip to Germany a few years ago, and had the chance to let it stretch its horses on the autobahn it just touched 150mph and maintained it for miles.
@@alextilson5809 In Germany the max speed is limited to 250 km/h, most cars are even limited electronicaly at that speed, but in some parts and some times when there's no working on the roads and no aditional speed limits, usualy police choose to ignore most of the cars that are speeding over 250 kmh, but not all and not every time. And the story was about 160 mph so 257.49, not much over the limit. Back to subject, XJR is looking like a 6 out of 10, and XJ series 3 is still looking 12 ot of 10 and is the most gorgeous ever forever.
@John Bell they were not terrible, just not brilliant. Never seen any build quality issues on them. Suspension bushes failed systematically on All 308's.
gaffnaldo1 I worked on Jaguars in the seventies and eighties and it's always been a problem with XJs eating suspension bushes also front wheel bearings were a problem on the 308s, probably something to do with Ford thinking that using a Mondeo rear bearing on the front of an XJ with all the extra loads and stresses was a good idea.
@@philnewstead5388 you are absolutely right. Having soft bushes is partly what gives them a floaty ride however they do wear very quickly. Didnt know about the mondeo bearing however i will say 300's and xj40's went through bearings much quicker
I was 19 years old in 1989 and I was driving a 1974 Series 2 Jaguar XJ6 4.2 in midnight blue. I absolutely adored that car however it was an early British Leyland model which meant I drove it at all times with one eye on the fuel gauge and the other eye on the oil pressure gauge. Being a British Leyland car it kicked me in the balls and emptied my wallet at every opportunity, 2 head gaskets, water pump, 2 fuel pumps and a replacement engine, not to mention the fact that it chewed its way through Pirelli P6 tyres like a toddler with a tube of smarties. Having said all that it was still a Jaaaggg and the ride was superb and the acceleration was impressive, even by 1989 standards. My friends were driving 1.2ltr Vauxhall Novas with wind down windows and I had leather seats, power steering, electric windows and a huge grin on my face. I had two more XJ6”s over the years but they never felt as special as the first. I see Series 2’s from the 70’s pop up on Autotrader every now and then for strong money and I’m almost tempted to re-live my youth until I remember the pain and financial ruin of owning a British Leyland Jaguar 😂😂
Love it, so ! Being an older man I went out & bought a pristine 2007 XJ Sovereign on Friday. The steering wheel is electricly adjustable & automatically gets out of the way when you switch off. It has 4 cup holders & since it's the 2.7 TDVi 6 speed model, I'm getting 45mpg Around Town. On top of that there's a special place to put the Cocodcomol & Werthers Originals.
I like people like you who can buy any car but intentionally chose this British icon and keep it on the road as long as possible. X308 proud owner here.
I'm happy to see another X308 XJR is preserved. I have a 1999 XJR and I agree the electrical gremlins are annoying but if you replaced all the ground straps and battery leads most issues go away. However you are right, you need to drive these 1-2 times a week, VERY sensitive to voltage.
Here in the great wild state of Wyoming I have my horse, my dog, my old 76 GMC pick up..and my 98 XJ8L...I am delighted you also love them. I saved mine from a reckless fellow in Colorado who had no idea the class of car it was..nor how to drive or care for it. Yes..we put money in..yes I found an excellent mechanic and he is tied up in the barn. My black jag and I took a 3200mi walkabout in 5 states this last summer..now theres a love affair..camped out of the trunk, saw beautiful places and always brought smiles...Yes...a one of a kind automobile💞🔥💞
An excellent review by someone who truly understands the car. Since I was 17 I've owned almost every model Jaguar from the 1950s on up to 1999. Currently have a 98 XJ-R, a 99 XJ-R and a 99 XK-8. I totally agree that the X308 is the absolute most beautiful of the last 40 years or so. My 72 XJ-6 short w.b. would be a close second to me. One other maintenance item that is very important (from personal experience): The rubber oil cooler lines. I strongly suggest changing them pre-emptively, as that failure could easily destroy the engine just like the tensioners. I couldn't find new lines, so I had a hydraulics outfit remove the old rubber hoses and replace them, held on very securely with hose clamps instead of crimp fittings. Cost only $40 after r & r'ing them. Every moment driving any of mine is a moment to smile and actually feel at one with the automobile. That applies to every Jaguar I've ever owned (10 and counting).
Fantastic job on keeping a timeless Classic on the road!! Did the same with a S-type 3.0 that needed new subframe and new sills. The rest was great condition. I did RVS treatment on it in the engine, gearbox, diff and Servo so now it averages 30+ and nearly 40 on a run. There’s something about Jaguar that is very special, soft and comfy but still sporty, fantastic in the bends. I wish style and class went into fashion again.
I have a similar era XJ8 with most of the bugs sorted in the Ford days. It certainly gets the looks and I like the no compromise low driving position and the cupboard sized boot. No supercharger on mine but 4 litres is enough for National Trust visits!
I can relate to your article. Our first Jag was a black 2000 XJR, wow. But after a couple of years and at 134K miles, I thought we would have to invest in upgrades, or best bet might be to buy a newer and low mileage XJR. Found a silver 2003 XJR in Dallas, TX with 27K miles. Flew to Dallas, drove it home to New Hampshire - March of 2013. Still have it, and a '96 XJ12, and a 2008 XKR Portfolio. Love them all, and all are different. Vanity license plates are very popular here so the XJR was, and now the XKR is 'BADKTTY'. We get lots of comments on the Jag. I've owned a lot of cars, the '08 XKR is easily the best car ever, and the 2003 XJR is right behind it - and it has heated seats, cupholders, and steering wheel moves in and out as well as up and down.
Nice to find someone who loves Jags.... my dad must have had a lot of Jags but wen he retired he still has the XJR and like you he's spent my inheritance on it.... lol but its a lovely, smooth car to drive and very quite for a V8
My dream car as a teenager, I was able to afford a 3.2 V8 on my 27th birthday, back in 2006. I sold it in 2011 and I miss it to this day.. A great, great car!
I had one, the most amazing thing about it to me that never ceased to amaze me is how it went round corners, you'd think it would be a big wallowy barge but it corners on rails. It broke down once outside Buckingham palace, armed guards all over us, I like to think it picked its moments.
I’ve owned mine since it was 3 years old (15 years and counting). Not only the best car I’ve ever owned, but one of the best cars ever made IMO. Comments at the fuel station include “that’s a beautiful car” from men and women. Thank you Jaguar, you made a diamond.
''it knows who it is and who its trying to be...its not over the top sickly british.... ''. Every word you use to describe your X308 shows great command of English and great insight into cars. Totally enjoyable
My dad had the older straight six version of the XJR. When he bought it, I was only 7 and we took it out for a drive to my uncles. That car was so fast that we missed the turning to my uncle’s house on the A3. I’m 20 now and i think it’s the best saloon ever made.
I used a Maplin's one watt solar panel on the back shelf on my X308 to keep the battery fit while parked. For my sins I replaced the sagging ceiling liner with a £4 leopard skin throw from High Wycombe street market. Then I put a subwoofer in the rear armrest alcove.
" I replaced the sagging ceiling liner with a £4 leopard skin throw from High Wycombe street market." Classy AF and entirely consonant with socks and sandals!
Very well done and described... I have a 1999 XJR with 14500 miles.... It without reservation brings a smile to your face when driving... Majestic car with superb ride, handing, speed and history....
What a car. We had two, the first we had for 6 years before being wiped out in a head on collision with some M3 wanker overtaking on a blind hill keeping everyone safe getting seatbelt brusies whereas the guy was cut out of the BMW. Not a single issue was had with either one both were dealer maintained. Got my brother to hospital in 16 minutes in what was a 40minute journey. Rapid and composed and such a comfortable ride. We sold it to my uncle as my dad got an XFR instead which he kept for years until my cousin got t-bonned which he walked away from much to the police’s surprise.
I bought myself one of these in may, amazing cars love every time i have the opportunity to get it out on the road. As the previous owner said you will never waste a tank of petrol in an XJR you will enjoy a tank of petrol.
Jennifer Schmitzer Haha i setup the account back in 2009 and the name has just remained. Yes most of my cars are PSA, although i also have an XJR and MX5. I do make repair videos on the channel for anything i have in the shed.
Beautiful! I have a 1998 XJR in that exact same color with 96k miles. The thing runs like a champ, especially driving around in Los Angeles. Glad to see this video. Love it!
Not gonna lie, I absolutely loved my X350, despite its faults, it was a joy to drive. Had the X308 as a courtesy car and could see the work that was done to create the X350. Perhaps one day I’ll have another.
I can atest to the handling: I had the XJSport 3.2 and that handled around Radford Road roundabout, up by the Coventry ring road, like it was on rails - at quite some speed... lol.. In the rain, it always shocked me how flat and grippy the car felt going around some tight bends at speed. Comfortable but entertaining at the same time
Had one and loved it .I sold it to a neighbour 4 years ago who still has it and every time i pass his house and see it parked on his drive i could cry .He wont sell it he clever not dumb like me lol
Such fabulous cars, these X308's, especially the R. Jaguar is up there with my favorite makes of car, as there is no one else who, time after time, gets the mix of ride, performance and great, yet understated style so right. As much as I do like the current XJ, these older ones look so nice, and they've aged really well, they don't look at all dated. In terms of "modern" Jags, if I could afford one of these R's, preferably a black XJR100, and an XJ81 6.0, I'd be a very happy man. Unfortunately, with the county, even World, being as is, at present, I couldn't even afford to fill one with fuel! One day though.
Had a '73 XJ6 for over 10 years as a daily driver. Maintained it well and it treated me to over 100k miles of joyous motoring. Then drove a string of SAABs which were enjoyable in a much different way. My DD today is a very quick Miata turbo. And now I just a very nice '02 XJ8 Sport black on black and so looking forward to taking delivery 3 days from now.....
"Grace Pace and Space" Well OK on everything but space - the 308 platform was never good on space to be honest especially if you were over 6ft tall and was a tad cramped in the back (unless you had the extended version) But having said that I had few problems with mine but there were a few issues with rust - door frames, sills, front wings and also a sagging headliner took their toll on my wallet and eventually it failed its MOT on a number of issues that I simply could not afford to fix so it went on its way. I replaced it with a LPG converted "normal" XJ8 (executive) and never looked back for almost 8 years of trouble free driving only being sold as it was basically too low to get in and out of with a sore back. Someday I'll get another just for the fun of it :)
I intentionally watch this video to admire the beauty of this machine. Jaguar are so beautiful then. Wish Jaguar will bring this body style back. Love everything about this one!
@David Topchiev come back when you know what the fuck you’re talking about. The car you refer to is the X350, from 2003-2009 (not ‘04-‘09). And it is cheap garbage compared to this car.
EXCELLENT REVIEW. I enjoyed it thoroughly. Your XJR is a thing of beauty. Thank you for helping preserve SUCH a CLASSIC Jaguar. Now I am going to search, online, for well-cared for used XJRs ! A GOOD one will NOT be cheap, I know, BUT, to a certain extent, we do get what we pay for.
I had a 1971 XJ6 and loved it - it had a timing chain guide problem with it's hemi DOC 6 cylinder. Still a great car. I have driven the XJR from San Diego to Reno and back - same genes, great car.
the 308, 350 and updated 358 to me still hold that iconic jaguar look that now has been lost, and while Jaguar felt they need to change and the modern ones are great to drive!!, they could have easily kept some of those classic jag lines...such a shame none of the newer Jaguars have any of the old Jag DNA.
I own a black '98 XJR in the U.S. and it is hands down the best car I have ever owned including the top German makes. I will keep this jewel for the rest of my days. Thank you for sharing the best kept secret in the automotive world.
Youre right but I've got several projects on the go and limited funds and storage space. Plus I've got a long list of other cars I'd like to own and experience
I have a x300 sovereign a lot of car for not a lot of money, like yours puts a smile on when I drive it. I always tell anyone who asks what it's like to drive , you get in, the world goes past, you get out, no stress, no aches just enjoy the journey.
I had an X308 4.0 Executive with silver coachwork, cream interior, black carpet and celtic alloys. I loved it so much I took it with me to Australia when I emigrated. I drove it in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and a few other places. When I came back to the UK I left it behind. I regret it as it was a lovely car and they are appreciating now and hard to find in decent condition. Despite the mileage the XJR will give you your money back in the years ahead, but it is such fun, why sell it. Just enjoy.
you blokes in the UK are are so lucky, you have a lot of Jags to chose from. here in Johannesburg there are not a lot. and are expensive. thank you i love your blog.
The indicator sound screams class to me. The upholstery and carpets dampen the sound and that reminds me of sitting in the back of a Silver Shadow when I was a kid. Wonderful car!
I quite agree with you, but I actually prefer my 6.0 XJ12. It doesn't look quite as sporty (though mine is a SWB) as the XJR but I love the silky smooth torque on demand V12.
I have a 3.2l XJ8 and I love it. It's the only car I've drive where you can drive 200 miles and feel more relaxed when you get out of it than when you got in. My wife nags me to get rid of it but, although it has cost me a lot to bring it up to standard, it's worth its weight in gold in getting rid of the stresses of day to day life. You would think that a car weighing 2 tons wouldn't go around corners but it does, it's fantastically balanced and planted in all weathers. It's a challenge to drive, in that you have to be firm with it to get the best from it, but I love it.
Only car out of 47 I've owned that makes me say "I love this car" every time I drive it. And you are right, they need to be driven. Being parked is not good for these beautiful and majestic autos.
Hi there, I've been talking about getting an XJ for a while, well now I've got a 2008 x358 diesel and it is superb !! I'm out in it today and it's just so nice drive; comfortable, precise, powerful, economical. It's all good and down to you, so thanks very much, Dave.
I have two Xj8 Vanden Plas sedans, a 2001 and a 2002. Bought them both in 2013. Looked for a year. The first one arrived from across the country (Richmond, VA...I live in California), and I thought it had a serious engine problem when it arrived. While my mechanic was investigating, another one came up for sale that was local and a stunner...looked like it had never been sat in or driven and was that beautiful titanium grey. Turned out the first Jag was fine....so I decided to keep both, and just as the gentleman in this video says, he smiles every time he drives his, I'm the same way. My mechanics in Pasadena, CA...Pasadena Motor Cars...are absolute experts at Jags and keep my cars perfect. They're also very reasonable in what they charge, amazing at sourcing hard to find parts, and 100% scrupulous. So I have two Jags and everything on them works! What a concept! Love the design and the way they waft down the highway.
Nice tribute to a awesome car. I've owned a 2000 XJ8 for the last two years and its been very reliable. The odd dash light that pops on once in a while...I think it does that just to say "hello" !
HELLO MY BOY, GREAT, I LOVE ALL YOUR VIDEOS! AND THIS ONE IS WOW !! I'M A JAG MAN, HAD A FEW OVER THE YEARS, FROM A MKII TO A XJ40 XJR. BUT I'M NO LONGER DRIVING, AS I'M PUSHING 80 NOW, AND MY SIGHT IS NOT WHAT IT WAS! YES, I MISS IT, BUT NOT IN MANY OTHER WAYS. WHEN YOU SEE THE STANDARD OF DRIVING THESE DAYS! I NOTICE, THAT YOU DON'T HAVE A BONNET MASCOT, THAT'S A MUST FOR ME!!! ANYWAY YOU TAKE CARE, AND DRIVE SAFELY. REGARDS, RUSS.
I love Jags warts and all . Absolutely no other manufacturers produced a car like this and they just didn't get it. They are arguably one of the best driving cars in the world and yes they usually do need some maintenance but that's just part of being a Jaguar owner. You buy them with your heart and not your head and for me I would follow my heart every time when it comes to the Jaguar. Wonderful British modern classic 👌
To be extremely honest, I could see you as the new figurehead for Top Gear. I know it’s such a stereotypical thing to say, but there’s never a boring bland spot throughout any of your vids. Great content, keep up the good work!
Hands down the most beautiful car on this earth in my opinion. I'm 27 and got a 2001 xjr same carnival red exterior but with black interior, she feels so much more special to drive than any of the german equivalent. Never gonna sell her.
Thanks for an excellent review. I had a 2000 year XJR like this (still have it but not on road unfortunately). I previously had S reg but not supercharged. The XJR is beautifully quiet to drive until you open it up and then it's a fantastic refined roaring lion. Really loved my one, not cheap to run, but the last of the true Jaguars ever made. After posting the first part of my comment in 2020, my son and I decided to get the XJR back on the road. We’ve spent just over a year on it and we have replaced fuel pumps, new lamda sensor, ABS wheel sensor and fixed main ABS pump (needed pcb soldering), “A Frame” removed new bushes installed and repainted and new MAS meter as it was giving crazy air-flow rates without throwing a fault code; we discovered it as it wouldn’t properly accelerate past 3500rpm. Also replaced top Accelerator cable as stretched and was only giving 81% opening. We also added new window seals all round from secondhand doors we purchased. The only work we didn’t do personally was welding of the front footwells and sills. The car has around 111k miles although the engine only has around 60k as it was replaced in late 2003 because of the Nikasil bore issue. Last month the car passed it’s MOT and is now happily back on the road. We only last week replaced the top throttle cable (they stretch) and according to our ELM327 we were only getting 81% of full throttle opening. The car is now driving beautifully and both my son and I are absolutely loving it and intending to do further restoration work on it over time as we will never sell it. They are stunning vehicles which are easy and docile to drive normally, but open the engine up and the power and sweet noise of the Eaton Supercharger is intoxicating.
Great footage and review on a great car 👍😁 I bought mine back in 2003 from the first owner and have been driving it since then without any major problems. Never had any of the described issues to deal with except for the headlining. No mechanical failure, no rust, the paint and interior still in perfect condition. I will definitely keep this masterpiece of British design and engineering in my collection and keep on enjoying its smooth, comfortable and nevertheless sporty ride 😊 If you like, you can learn more about it here: ua-cam.com/video/CwGFa0g3yds/v-deo.html
I have just found a 2004 version of this car one owner from new with service history supporting 19000 miles only from new. Interior is spotless, drivers seat and steering wheel , peddles, bolsters etc… all like new. I am very tempted.
I love these cara for years I have been reading about them and I always get great information. This my dream car .I am 74 years old but even if I drive it once and give my Daughter I will be Happy. I am trying to save money for a 2005 or2006 Xj. Tell me what kind of service should I di before I start driving it. I PRAY THAT God will bless me with some more years to get my dream Car GOD bless you Stay safe.
I absolutely adore this car. By heart I'm die hard volvoniac, owned the lot from 240 across 740, 850 up until V70 but I'm in love with this generation XJ and this is the best and most beautiful example of it. You're very lucky man to have this marvelous beast AND beauty.
@@HighPeakAutos I think you missed the reference there. You are too young. "Minder" TV series, Classic late seventies TV series. Check it out. Lots of tasty "motors" in it.
Nice to see some more youtube content on the Jag X308 XJR. Yours looks stunning in that colour. I would agree with more or less everything you said, although for me, I get about 21 mpg (7.43km/l) combined and never ever more than 25 mpg (8.85km/l) on a run. I use mine as my daily car, and I just can't compare it to anything. Nothing looks like it as the X308 was the last of the XJs to have a really low roof line compared to most modern cars. The X350 just doesn't look elegant at all and is a fair bit taller (though it benefits in other areas such as having aluminium construction). Obviously, the X308 isn't really practical when you consider how long it is; the cabin is pretty snug but I love it. Looks incredible, effortless power, superb ride/handling balance. Probably the best car I've owned.
Hey man, that's a lovely car and wonderful commentary too. Those XJ's are never seen anymore here in the USA but I always thought they were the sexiest sedan's every made. It's incredible though how modern they still look even 20 years later. Thanks for taking the time to share your beauty!
Paul Smith I’m a bit embarrassed about that. I usually like to post the video once the car is sold. I don’t want to be accused of making these videos to push my own stock. However in this case, I know there are lots of jag fans who subscribe and was quite excited to share this
I love my XJ350. She's a 2006 V8 Sovereign that's spotless inside. She's got some age marks on the paintwork, a few stone chips etc but I get so many comments about her. The shape is increasingly rare it seems and so many people seem to hold the old XJ's in a really high regard. The drive is exceptional, and even driving to and from work every day in stop start traffic I average 24.8 mpg.
Had my 98 XJR since 2003 and am the second owner. 94k on the clock now, and has been used daily but mainly only short distances. Have not spent a lot of money on it but a bit thirsty, I average around 14mpg. Unfortunately the chassis is rusting and I have been told may not go through another MOT. Apparently the engine needs to come out to carry out the required repair and welding, and so after almost 17 years it looks as if it may be heading for the scrap yard. Been a good car and I will be sorry to see it go.
@@HighPeakAutos It's the cost that has me thinking if it will be worth it in the long run. I am wondering if it is getting to the stage where I will be fighting a losing battle with rust. Engine and gearbox are obviously fine with less than a 100k on the clock. Not sure if the battle with rust can ever be won.
A great review of a motoring legend xj40, x308 and the x350 were coming to the end of the real proper jag's with the XJR being the most desirable of these body shapes after the x350 all the family resemblance was lost along with prestige mark of the jag and now we have the F pace it's game over.
Love this video. I own a black 2001 xjr, 95k miles and I bought it as the second owner last year. Your description of this car is perfect. I did not buy this car for attention, but it turns heads everywhere I go. Everyone wants to know about it. Thank you for your video.
Awesome review, very honest but you really capture the enthusiasm. Somebody once said a Jaguar is like the bloke sitting in the corner of the pub supping real ale with a flat cap on his head. He's quiet, relaxed and inoffensive - but if there's any aggro he can beat the living daylights out of anybody who tries to take him on. Such is the XJR. I had a 1996 X-306 XJR (the four litre six cylinder) and absolutely LOVED the car. Brilliant mile muncher and so comfortable yet very wieldy. It only cost me £1k... totally amazing VFM. At that age the downside is, as you say, the ongoing bills to keep the car in good order. I also lived with the sagging headliner, never got around to replacing it. Eventually I sold mine to somebody in the trade who could keep up the repairs needed. Miles per gallon were poor, but the smiles per gallon were off the scale!

Great choice! I bet it was great on a road trip like that :)
As Marilyn would say..."Like eating ice cream..."
30mpg???
"I love the long bonnet or 'hood' if you don't like using English" - very naughty but I like it!
Alan Mac Haha thanks
@@HighPeakAutos And for us, American colonials, the boot is "trunk".
NorceCodine that’s right. Although trunk makes more sense than ‘boot’ to be honest
@@HighPeakAutos am I right in saying, this is for sale ?
Steven Hedley Yes, somewhat reluctantly
Is a 2008 XJR Portfolio reliable? I've been in love with this model since I was much younger.
Nice to find someone who loves Jags.... my dad must have had a lot of Jags but wen he retired he still has the XJR and like you he's spent my inheritance on it.... lol but its a lovely, smooth car to drive and very quite for a V8
Amazing car and a great video! You are one of the few reviewers who dont spit shout scream or wobble. Love your content. Keep it up!
arnas ambrasas Thanks! I appreciate it 😉
My dream car as a teenager, I was able to afford a 3.2 V8 on my 27th birthday, back in 2006. I sold it in 2011 and I miss it to this day.. A great, great car!
That interior looks stunning ! The leather looks immaculate 👏🏻
Thanks! It's been looked after. Previous owner mustn't have been a jeans man haha
My favored car! I crossed the USA coast to coast twice in the most comfortable way possible in a Jaguar!
Great choice!
Thanks for commenting :)
''it knows who it is and who its trying to be...its not over the top sickly british.... ''. Every word you use to describe your X308 shows great command of English and great insight into cars. Totally enjoyable
E McClean Thank you! I appreciate it 😉
My dad had the older straight six version of the XJR. When he bought it, I was only 7 and we took it out for a drive to my uncles. That car was so fast that we missed the turning to my uncle’s house on the A3. I’m 20 now and i think it’s the best saloon ever made.
I agree :)
Legend.
" I replaced the sagging ceiling liner with a £4 leopard skin throw from High Wycombe street market." Classy AF and entirely consonant with socks and sandals!
Brought my 01' XJR in 2005 and I absolutely still love my car. Its stylish, powerful yet still refined.
Very well done and described... I have a 1999 XJR with 14500 miles.... It without reservation brings a smile to your face when driving... Majestic car with superb ride, handing, speed and history....
I agree! You must have a nice one there
As the previous owner said you will never waste a tank of petrol in an XJR you will enjoy a tank of petrol.
peugeotCitroen2CV I love that! That’s a perfect summary
If you don’t mind, I’m curious about your username. Are your cars all PSA lol. Not trying to be cheeky.
I enjoy my tanks of petrol very much too ❤️

Haha i setup the account back in 2009 and the name has just remained.
Love it!
Nice choice! You won't have any rust issues with yours if you're in CA :)
Comfortable but entertaining at the same time
A very informative insight into this wonderful iconic classic and thank you for keeping this beauty out there for every one to appreciate
Thanks!
I used to have an old XJ6 4.2 Sport, stripped it out for dragging and it went like stink. Was a lot of fun
"Propels you to..." *Cheeky look* "... the speed limit"
We've all been there. Great video :D
Classlawd The XJR gets you there quicker than you’d think
Are you thinking of selling it by any chance?
Cheers.
I love a classic car that has been used properly, instead one with 20k miles after 30 years, it's like it never lived.
I completely agree with this gent. Well spoken mate!
I now own a black x308 XJR with asteroids. Love it so much, it's being featured on number 27 next month.. watch this space.
You're not Clarkson, but you're better than any of those who took over and ruined Top Gear. The metaphors are good, esp Argos Catalogue etc

Haha sorry to hear that
Such fabulous cars, these X308's, especially the R.
The loveliest car ever made, particularly the whole dash was so distinctive Jag's feature and largerly missed these days )))
I agree
@@HighPeakAutos I miss the hell out of my 96 XJ12. Don't sell it you WILL regret it. It's the only car I've had for ten plus years.
Weirdly this is one of my dream cars, loved this video
KissTheGreat Thanks for watching!
It's not weird at all. These are handsome beasts.
I had a 1971 XJ6 and loved it - it had a timing chain guide problem with it's hemi DOC 6 cylinder. Still a great car. I have driven the XJR from San Diego to Reno and back - same genes, great car.
Bloody lovely car that. In its element with a boot full of sawn-offs,moody artwork, and re-cast bullion.
the 308, 350 and updated 358 to me still hold that iconic jaguar look that now has been lost, and while Jaguar felt they need to change and the modern ones are great to drive!!, they could have easily kept some of those classic jag lines...such a shame none of the newer Jaguars have any of the old Jag DNA.
BTW here's a 358 travelling at what equates to 1000mph.... 168 miles in 7 minutes.... Grasmere to
Irvine.ua-cam.com/video/0KmPovsMjv8/v-deo.html
Lovely Jubbly, hear that Jaguar roar when pulling away.
I own a black '98 XJR in the U.S. and it is hands down the best car I have ever owned including the top German makes. I will keep this jewel for the rest of my days. Thank you for sharing the best kept secret in the automotive world.
They look great in black! Keep it :)
Lovely interior, think you will regret letting it go in days to come as it’s a lovely spec and you’ll never find another in so good nick.
Steve Garthwright Thats right
And another one to add to my autotrader list of cars that I perve on with the intent to buy
Just enjoy.
"Can you name a prettier car?"
"A prettier saloon"
No no, car was fine
you blokes in the UK are are so lucky, you have a lot of Jags to chose from. here in Johannesburg there are not a lot. and are expensive.
thank you i love your blog.
The subtitles say „music“, when you hear the engine.
KLiNoTweet haha it’s music to me 😂
The indicator sound screams class to me.
What, 47, no , joking
Hi there, I've been talking about getting an XJ for a while, well now I've got a 2008 x358 diesel and it is superb !! I'm out in it today and it's just so nice drive; comfortable, precise, powerful, economical. It's all good and down to you, so thanks very much, Dave.
“It propels you to, the speed limit”...🤥
These are the sexiest Jags ever made ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Nice tribute to a awesome car. I've owned a 2000 XJ8 for the last two years and its been very reliable. The odd dash light that pops on once in a while...I think it does that just to say "hello" !
Thats right. They usually sort themselves out
Great review, agree totally.

I've just bought an XF 3.0 diesel S and it's the best car I've ever owned. Stunning to look at and stonking fast. Fantastic car.
RUSS Thanks for watching!
Think I recognized where you were, dove holes going through Buxton to Matlock bath..
To be extremely honest, I could see you as the new figurehead for Top Gear.
I know it’s such a stereotypical thing to say, but there’s never a boring bland spot throughout any of your vids.
Great content, keep up the good work!
I absolutely LOVE the Daimler Super V8 in its stock config.
Much better looking than the xjr too
Hands down the most beautiful car on this earth in my opinion. I'm 27 and got a 2001 xjr same carnival red exterior but with black interior, she feels so much more special to drive than any of the german equivalent. Never gonna sell her.
Nathan Johnstone I agree! I love it
You will one day sell it when it becomes a gaping money pit, and fuel keeps rising.
How optimistic. We'll all have a Prius. Wont that be an exciting time

Great footage and review on a great car 👍😁
I bought mine back in 2003 from the first owner and have been driving it since then without any major problems. Never had any of the described issues to deal with except for the headlining. No mechanical failure, no rust, the paint and interior still in perfect condition.
I will definitely keep this masterpiece of British design and engineering in my collection and keep on enjoying its smooth, comfortable and nevertheless sporty ride 😊

I have just found a 2004 version of this car one owner from new with service history supporting 19000 miles only from new. Interior is spotless, drivers seat and steering wheel , peddles, bolsters etc… all like new. I am very tempted.
The AJ-V8 engine that is used in this car has to be one of the greatest V8 engines ever made.
Apart from the plastic chain tensioner that puts your valves and cams through the blender at 80,000 miles!

Also had serious problems with constant water pump failures, the 6 cylinder engine that came before it was more reliable

''The Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag!'' ''The loot, is in the boot!'' Dapper old boy, dapper! :)
Hey man, that's a lovely car and wonderful commentary too. Those XJ's are never seen anymore here in the USA but I always thought they were the sexiest sedan's every made. It's incredible though how modern they still look even 20 years later. Thanks for taking the time to share your beauty!
East Coast Classics I agree! Thanks for watching 👍🏻
You're selling it! Nice promo vid ;)
Paul Smith I’m a bit embarrassed about that. I usually like to post the video once the car is sold. I don’t want to be accused of making these videos to push my own stock. However in this case, I know there are lots of jag fans who subscribe and was quite excited to share this
@@HighPeakAutos fair enough, I don't see why you shouldn't mention it, to be honest! It's a beautiful car and deserves a leg up.
Just picked up a black XJ8L yesterday, loving it so far
They look awesome in black
Unfortunately
the chassis is rusting and I have been told may not go through another MOT. Apparently the engine needs to come out to carry out the required repair and welding, and so after almost 17 years it looks as if it may be heading for the scrap yard. Been a good car and I will be sorry to see it go.
Thats a crying shame. I'd be getting that fixed if I were you
@@HighPeakAutos It's the cost that has me thinking if it will be worth it in the long run. I am wondering if it is getting to the stage where I will be fighting a losing battle with rust. Engine and gearbox are obviously fine with less than a 100k on the clock. Not sure if the battle with rust can ever be won.
Mine likes to be plugged into a battery tender when its not used . Nice to watch an honest review by someone who truly appreciates these fine cars .
A great review of a motoring legend xj40, x308 and the x350 were coming to the end of the real proper jag's with the XJR being the most desirable of these body shapes after the x350 all the family resemblance was lost along with prestige mark of the jag and now we have the F pace it's game over.
...I really miss my 98 x308 XJR... the car I should never have sold ... most beautiful saloon ever made... and truly brilliant to drive...
Love this video. I own a black 2001 xjr, 95k miles and I bought it as the second owner last year. Your description of this car is perfect. I did not buy this car for attention, but it turns heads everywhere I go. Everyone wants to know about it.
Thank you for your video.
Matthew Williams I bet it looks great in black 😍
I had an XJ8 when I was studying I’m the UK. Everyone thought it was my grandpas, so you’re right about that. Wonderful car, I miss it dearly
I agree!
