Love it, so ! Being an older man I went out & bought a pristine 2007 XJ Sovereign on Friday. The steering wheel is electricly adjustable & automatically gets out of the way when you switch off. It has 4 cup holders & since it's the 2.7 TDVi 6 speed model, I'm getting 45mpg Around Town. On top of that there's a special place to put the Cocodcomol & Werthers Originals.
I can relate to your article. Our first Jag was a black 2000 XJR, wow. But after a couple of years and at 134K miles, I thought we would have to invest in upgrades, or best bet might be to buy a newer and low mileage XJR. Found a silver 2003 XJR in Dallas, TX with 27K miles. Flew to Dallas, drove it home to New Hampshire - March of 2013. Still have it, and a '96 XJ12, and a 2008 XKR Portfolio. Love them all, and all are different. Vanity license plates are very popular here so the XJR was, and now the XKR is 'BADKTTY'. We get lots of comments on the Jag. I've owned a lot of cars, the '08 XKR is easily the best car ever, and the 2003 XJR is right behind it - and it has heated seats, cupholders, and steering wheel moves in and out as well as up and down.
Nice to find someone who loves Jags.... my dad must have had a lot of Jags but wen he retired he still has the XJR and like you he's spent my inheritance on it.... lol but its a lovely, smooth car to drive and very quite for a V8
Most reliable car I've owned, I have clocked up 231 thousand miles in the 15 years I've owned it with just routine services. The best journey I had in it was a trip to Germany a few years ago, and had the chance to let it stretch its horses on the autobahn it just touched 150mph and maintained it for miles.
@@alextilson5809 In Germany the max speed is limited to 250 km/h, most cars are even limited electronicaly at that speed, but in some parts and some times when there's no working on the roads and no aditional speed limits, usualy police choose to ignore most of the cars that are speeding over 250 kmh, but not all and not every time. I love my XJ350. She's a 2006 V8 Sovereign that's spotless inside. She's got some age marks on the paintwork, a few stone chips etc but I get so many comments about her. The shape is increasingly rare it seems and so many people seem to hold the old XJ's in a really high regard. The drive is exceptional, and even driving to and from work every day in stop start traffic I average 24.8 mpg.
Such fabulous cars, these X308's, especially the R. Jaguar is up there with my favorite makes of car, as there is no one else who, time after time, gets the mix of ride, performance and great, yet understated style so right. As much as I do like the current XJ, these older ones look so nice, and they've aged really well, they don't look at all dated. In terms of "modern" Jags, if I could afford one of these R's, preferably a black XJR100, and an XJ81 6.0, I'd be a very happy man. Unfortunately, with the county, even World, being as is, at present, I couldn't even afford to fill one with fuel! One day though.
I have been without a vehicle for the past 20 year. No joking. The Jaguar XJ is in my top 3. They are still considered stately. I rarely see one on the road, And I rarely see one beat up. very good video, Thank you far taking the time.

I bought xj40 4.0 in Finland which is pretty rare car here, my second option was xj12 or x308. I fell in love with Jaguar and i would buy them all if had a place where to store them.

Great review of a truly great car. You confirmed another motor for my fantasy garage (sounds a bit wrong I know..) V8 supercharged Jaguar. Enough said. I did wonder how the original buyer didn’t spec heated seats...also when did cup holders first start appearing in cars? Never used have them...did have ashtrays but not cup holders. We just weren’t obsessed with drinking all the time, similar to not being available on the phone at all times like today. Please keep the reviews coming. Your non-rushed conversational style is impressive and the mix of subtle humour and car-facts with a background of road and engine soundtrack makes for entertaining viewing.
I bought a beautiful xjr in black with cream leather ebony dash and black carpets, in or about 2002, as my r33 gtr skyline was off the road. The complete antithesis of the shouty skyline, it was silky smooth and subtle. It drove beautifully, the super harger seems far superior to the turbos on the skyline. Luckily i bought a warranty with the xjr as the gearbox failed after about a year. As you mentioned in your video, it uses a mercedes gearbox as jaguar didnt make one that cope with the power at the time. It cost £12,500. I would have another xjr now.
Seen a 2002 XJ8 Sport for 2 grand. I'm so tempted to start saving for it. Don't know if my wife would like it though since there wouldn't be Bluetooth connectivity
Great video. I owned an x308 (alas not an XJR) from 2001 to 2017. Broke my heart when the big ends started knocking at 190k. If it wasn't for some bubbling on the rear wheel arches I would have put a fresh engine in it.
@@HighPeakAutos I've had two of them. Go for the 4.4 Green Label, it's by far the more reliable as I found out to my cost, compared to the 6.75 RR engined red label. Don't touch the 'T' as camshaft issues, forget a pre 2006 RR engine one as head gasket issues....
The perennial conundrum,,,hate to lose such beauties but who really has the time and money to maintain to the standard they deserve,,,great impartial review,,,!
Its all about reliability my friend.I dont go along with, dont worry about the expenses you are driving a Jag.I love older premium cars but their has to be a fair amount of reliability. You mention the merc gearbox, well i would ask you, what would be better the Jag.or an S class Merc.
@@HighPeakAutos You still do not answer to the point of Jag reliability.Sure it looks great and my old man had 2 of them but they had all sorts of problems.Jaguar always had the looks and that lovely suspension but reliability was very bad and that is what i want to tell the people here.
The only saloon cooler than that is the Maserati Quattroporte, and you can't pick up a good one of those for less than £15K. The X308 XJR is the ultimate expression of the last classic shape XJ and I can see the survivors acquiring classic status with values to match before too long.
Great video, the X308 is a beautifully designed car. I prefer the Daimler version myself and love the chrome (black is more for sport car looks, and I've just never been a sporty car person), and I am not that old as some people might think when I say that. I have had all incarnations of the XJ40 body type 3 XJ40's two of which were Daimlers. one X300 just the exec model and my current X308 Daimler. first one (standard XJ40 3.2) I got at 26 and the current one at 31 9 years ago. Surprised you don't have heated seats and the steering wheel doesn't go in and out as well as up and down, thought they all did (might be worth checking if something wrong, maybe just a broken wire). should be able to get a second hand arm rest with cupholders from ebay or specialist 2nd hand suppliers, easy to fit only about three screws to change rests over. Great to see someone else keeping these fantastic cars on the road and not worrying about spending more on it than you'll get back, these cars aren't about financial gain or sense but the love of it. As you say every time you get in it it makes you smile, I know that :) lol. With a X308 the joy is not where your going, it's how you get there. Enjoy your stunning car.
To be clear ~ I really enjoy your approach and dry humour, please don’t change! On this and the last video you repeated some of the technical info was what I meant. Keep up the good work 👍
916strada Ah, I see. That sometimes happens. I notice it when I’m editing but I have limited footage to work with so if I can’t cut it out cleanly I have to leave it in
You clearly don't know as much as you think you do about that error of Jaguar, as that model was not the highest spec you could get. There was the Daimler Super V8, and the XJR-100. 100 XJRs and 100 XKRs were very special limited edition models. However the Daimler Super V8 was the true Daddy of them all, it replaced the Daimler Double Six X300 range.
Beautiful car you have there. I agree with you on leaving the pin stripe off. Any plans on smaller supercharger pulley? I'm also an x308 guy. 02 xj sport and 03 xjr r1. On the r1, I do plan to tastefully mod it.
I was 19 years old in 1989 and I was driving a 1974 Series 2 Jaguar XJ6 4.2 in midnight blue. I absolutely adored that car however it was an early British Leyland model which meant I drove it at all times with one eye on the fuel gauge and the other eye on the oil pressure gauge. Being a British Leyland car it kicked me in the balls and emptied my wallet at every opportunity, 2 head gaskets, water pump, 2 fuel pumps and a replacement engine, not to mention the fact that it chewed its way through Pirelli P6 tyres like a toddler with a tube of smarties. Having said all that it was still a Jaaaggg and the ride was superb and the acceleration was impressive, even by 1989 standards. My friends were driving 1.2ltr Vauxhall Novas with wind down windows and I had leather seats, power steering, electric windows and a huge grin on my face. I had two more XJ6”s over the years but they never felt as special as the first. I see Series 2’s from the 70’s pop up on Autotrader every now and then for strong money and I’m almost tempted to re-live my youth until I remember the pain and financial ruin of owning a British Leyland Jaguar 😂😂
@John Bell they were not terrible, just not brilliant. Never seen any build quality issues on them. Suspension bushes failed systematically on All 308's.
gaffnaldo1 I worked on Jaguars in the seventies and eighties and it's always been a problem with XJs eating suspension bushes also front wheel bearings were a problem on the 308s, probably something to do with Ford thinking that using a Mondeo rear bearing on the front of an XJ with all the extra loads and stresses was a good idea.
@@philnewstead5388 you are absolutely right. Having soft bushes is partly what gives them a floaty ride however they do wear very quickly. Didnt know about the mondeo bearing however i will say 300's and xj40's went through bearings much quicker
Great footage and review on a great car 👍😁 I bought mine back in 2003 from the first owner and have been driving it since then without any major problems. Never had any of the described issues to deal with except for the headlining. No mechanical failure, no rust, the paint and interior still in perfect condition. I will definitely keep this masterpiece of British design and engineering in my collection and keep on enjoying its smooth, comfortable and nevertheless sporty ride 😊 If you like, you can learn more about it here: ua-cam.com/video/CwGFa0g3yds/v-deo.html
I'm happy to see another X308 XJR is preserved. I have a 1999 XJR and I agree the electrical gremlins are annoying but if you replaced all the ground straps and battery leads most issues go away. However you are right, you need to drive these 1-2 times a week, VERY sensitive to voltage.
Fantastic job on keeping a timeless Classic on the road!! Did the same with a S-type 3.0 that needed new subframe and new sills. The rest was great condition. I did RVS treatment on it in the engine, gearbox, diff and Servo so now it averages 30+ and nearly 40 on a run. There’s something about Jaguar that is very special, soft and comfy but still sporty, fantastic in the bends. I wish style and class went into fashion again.
I like people like you who can buy any car but intentionally chose this British icon and keep it on the road as long as possible. X308 proud owner here.
@@HighPeakAutos I think you missed the reference there. You are too young. "Minder" TV series, Classic late seventies TV series. Check it out. Lots of tasty "motors" in it.
I have a similar era XJ8 with most of the bugs sorted in the Ford days. It certainly gets the looks and I like the no compromise low driving position and the cupboard sized boot. No supercharger on mine but 4 litres is enough for National Trust visits!
"Grace Pace and Space" Well OK on everything but space - the 308 platform was never good on space to be honest especially if you were over 6ft tall and was a tad cramped in the back (unless you had the extended version) But having said that I had few problems with mine but there were a few issues with rust - door frames, sills, front wings and also a sagging headliner took their toll on my wallet and eventually it failed its MOT on a number of issues that I simply could not afford to fix so it went on its way. I replaced it with a LPG converted "normal" XJ8 (executive) and never looked back for almost 8 years of trouble free driving only being sold as it was basically too low to get in and out of with a sore back. Someday I'll get another just for the fun of it :)
I used a Maplin's one watt solar panel on the back shelf on my X308 to keep the battery fit while parked. For my sins I replaced the sagging ceiling liner with a £4 leopard skin throw from High Wycombe street market. Then I put a subwoofer in the rear armrest alcove.
" I replaced the sagging ceiling liner with a £4 leopard skin throw from High Wycombe street market." Classy AF and entirely consonant with socks and sandals!
An excellent review by someone who truly understands the car. Since I was 17 I've owned almost every model Jaguar from the 1950s on up to 1999. Currently have a 98 XJ-R, a 99 XJ-R and a 99 XK-8. I totally agree that the X308 is the absolute most beautiful of the last 40 years or so. My 72 XJ-6 short w.b. would be a close second to me. One other maintenance item that is very important (from personal experience): The rubber oil cooler lines. I strongly suggest changing them pre-emptively, as that failure could easily destroy the engine just like the tensioners. I couldn't find new lines, so I had a hydraulics outfit remove the old rubber hoses and replace them, held on very securely with hose clamps instead of crimp fittings. Cost only $40 after r & r'ing them. Every moment driving any of mine is a moment to smile and actually feel at one with the automobile. That applies to every Jaguar I've ever owned (10 and counting).
I love these cara for years I have been reading about them and I always get great information. This my dream car .I am 74 years old but even if I drive it once and give my Daughter I will be Happy. I am trying to save money for a 2005 or2006 Xj. Tell me what kind of service should I di before I start driving it. I PRAY THAT God will bless me with some more years to get my dream Car GOD bless you Stay safe.
@David Topchiev come back when you know what the fuck you’re talking about. The car you refer to is the X350, from 2003-2009 (not ‘04-‘09). And it is cheap garbage compared to this car.
I had one, the most amazing thing about it to me that never ceased to amaze me is how it went round corners, you'd think it would be a big wallowy barge but it corners on rails. It broke down once outside Buckingham palace, armed guards all over us, I like to think it picked its moments.
Only car out of 47 I've owned that makes me say "I love this car" every time I drive it. And you are right, they need to be driven. Being parked is not good for these beautiful and majestic autos.
I bought myself one of these in may, amazing cars love every time i have the opportunity to get it out on the road. As the previous owner said you will never waste a tank of petrol in an XJR you will enjoy a tank of petrol.
Jennifer Schmitzer Haha i setup the account back in 2009 and the name has just remained. Yes most of my cars are PSA, although i also have an XJR and MX5. I do make repair videos on the channel for anything i have in the shed.
Youre right but I've got several projects on the go and limited funds and storage space. Plus I've got a long list of other cars I'd like to own and experience
I quite agree with you, but I actually prefer my 6.0 XJ12. It doesn't look quite as sporty (though mine is a SWB) as the XJR but I love the silky smooth torque on demand V12.
Not gonna lie, I absolutely loved my X350, despite its faults, it was a joy to drive. Had the X308 as a courtesy car and could see the work that was done to create the X350. Perhaps one day I’ll have another.
''it knows who it is and who its trying to be...its not over the top sickly british.... ''. Every word you use to describe your X308 shows great command of English and great insight into cars. Totally enjoyable

I love these XJ308's. Fantastic car, beaten only in its beauty by the even more stunning Bentley Arnage.
Funny you should mention the Arnage... Thats what I fancy as this cars replacement :)
Thanks :)
The perennial conundrum,,,hate to lose such beauties but who really has the time and money to maintain to the standard they deserve,,,great impartial review,,,!
Richard Irvine Thats the trouble isn’t it. I also have several projects on the go and have limited funds and storage space 😔
Yes. Absolutely.
Its all about reliability my friend.I dont go along with, dont worry about the expenses you are driving a Jag.I love older premium cars but their has to be a fair amount of reliability. You mention the merc gearbox, well i would ask you, what would be better the Jag.or an S class Merc.
johnny wires I wouldn’t want a 1998 S500. It was totally hideous
I agree with driving them every day ....
Pretty you ask, definitely yes
Maybe bentley but this is again a different class of car
Love your videos just watch out for repetition which has started to creep in 👍
916strada Thats the trouble the more of them I do. I’ll have to watch out for that 😉
To be clear ~ I really enjoy your approach and dry humour, please don’t change! On this and the last video you repeated some of the technical info was what I meant. Keep up the good work 👍
916strada Ah, I see. That sometimes happens. I notice it when I’m editing but I have limited footage to work with so if I can’t cut it out cleanly I have to leave it in
Absolutely stunning looks amazing a love these jags you have looked after this well credit to you enjoyed the video
Kev O Thank you! It’s not perfect but I like it
Just watched the movie snatch and now im longing for one of these!
A ZF Gearbox as used by mercedes, land rover, bmw, etc model 5HP24
Yes, also Audi and those transmissions have a horrible reputation and high failure rate. Be careful.
I love the XJ 350 and 358 more
Good choice.
It's heritage... good job
Nice and very, very British indeed ;-). Have you ever compared this to an other British icon, a Bentley from the same year? Keep up the nice vids :-)
I've never had a Bentley but its on my list
A beautiful beast. I've driven through Buxton much more cheaply though!
great review
Beautiful car you have there. I agree with you on leaving the pin stripe off. Any plans on smaller supercharger pulley? I'm also an x308 guy. 02 xj sport and 03 xjr r1. On the r1, I do plan to tastefully mod it.
1:05 Yes, the e38 7. The Jag is bloody lovely though.
I was thinking E39 540i sportpack at 1:06

Haha yes
Beautiful car, and The Jaguar XJ is a classic shape, but are they reliable?
A beautiful car !
Damm looking really nice !!!!!!
its very british crazy expensive the one that well maintained
I had a 1989 jaguar sovereign at the age of 19. Friends drove fiestas and I felt like a king 🤴
Matchbox Garage They never fail to disappoint
@@RT-ii8hb Series 2 was the best looking XJ

I wish had been as classy as you. I drove a 1989 Ford Granada Scorpio V6. A proper barge but I loved it as it was supremely comfortable.
"I love the long bonnet or 'hood' if you don't like using English" - very naughty but I like it!
Alan Mac Haha thanks
@@HighPeakAutos And for us, American colonials, the boot is "trunk".
NorceCodine that’s right. Although trunk makes more sense than ‘boot’ to be honest
@@HighPeakAutos am I right in saying, this is for sale ?
Steven Hedley Yes, somewhat reluctantly
I served my time on these. I never ever got tired of 308's. This is iconic, ageless and genuinely the last of the real Jaguars.
gaffnaldo1 I agree!
@John Bell they were not terrible, just not brilliant. Never seen any build quality issues on them. Suspension bushes failed systematically on All 308's.
Fully agree. Its ageless. My sovereign is x358. People recognize its jaguar than new version.
gaffnaldo1 I worked on Jaguars in the seventies and eighties and it's always been a problem with XJs eating suspension bushes also front wheel bearings were a problem on the 308s, probably something to do with Ford thinking that using a Mondeo rear bearing on the front of an XJ with all the extra loads and stresses was a good idea.
@@philnewstead5388 you are absolutely right. Having soft bushes is partly what gives them a floaty ride however they do wear very quickly. Didnt know about the mondeo bearing however i will say 300's and xj40's went through bearings much quicker
"Can you name a prettier car?"
"A prettier saloon"
No no, car was fine
Great footage and review on a great car 👍😁
I bought mine back in 2003 from the first owner and have been driving it since then without any major problems. Never had any of the described issues to deal with except for the headlining. No mechanical failure, no rust, the paint and interior still in perfect condition.
I will definitely keep this masterpiece of British design and engineering in my collection and keep on enjoying its smooth, comfortable and nevertheless sporty ride 😊

30mpg???
I like people like you who can buy any car but intentionally chose this British icon and keep it on the road as long as possible. X308 proud owner here.
Thanks! Good choice :)
You're not Clarkson, but you're better than any of those who took over and ruined Top Gear. The metaphors are good, esp Argos Catalogue etc

“It propels you to, the speed limit”...🤥
The subtitles say „music“, when you hear the engine.
KLiNoTweet haha it’s music to me 😂
I have a similar era XJ8 with most of the bugs sorted in the Ford days. It certainly gets the looks and I like the no compromise low driving position and the cupboard sized boot. No supercharger on mine but 4 litres is enough for National Trust visits!
"Propels you to..." *Cheeky look* "... the speed limit"
We've all been there. Great video :D
Classlawd The XJR gets you there quicker than you’d think
Are you thinking of selling it by any chance?
Cheers.
These are the sexiest Jags ever made ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I used a Maplin's one watt solar panel on the back shelf on my X308 to keep the battery fit while parked.
For my sins I replaced the sagging ceiling liner with a £4 leopard skin throw from High Wycombe street market.
Then I put a subwoofer in the rear armrest alcove.
Legend.
Modern Jag designs, especially the interiors, are dull and uninspiring, give me one of these anyday!
I love these cara for years I have been reading about them and I always get great information.
This my dream car .I am 74 years old but even if I drive it once and give my Daughter I will be Happy.
I am trying to save money for a 2005 or2006 Xj.

@@HighPeakAutos I miss the hell out of my 96 XJ12. Don't sell it you WILL regret it. It's the only car I've had for ten plus years.
I completely agree with this gent. Well spoken mate!
Only car out of 47 I've owned that makes me say "I love this car" every time I drive it. And you are right, they need to be driven. Being parked is not good for these beautiful and majestic autos.
And another one to add to my autotrader list of cars that I perve on with the intent to buy
I bought myself one of these in may, amazing cars love every time i have the opportunity to get it out on the road.
As the previous owner said you will never waste a tank of petrol in an XJR you will enjoy a tank of petrol.
peugeotCitroen2CV I love that! That’s a perfect summary

Lovely interior, think you will regret letting it go in days to come as it’s a lovely spec and you’ll never find another in so good nick.
Youre right but I've got several projects on the go and limited funds and storage space. Plus I've got a long list of other cars I'd like to own and experience
Think I recognized where you were, dove holes going through Buxton to Matlock bath..
I quite agree with you, but I actually prefer my 6.0 XJ12. It doesn't look quite as sporty (though mine is a SWB) as the XJR but I love the silky smooth torque on demand V12.
Bloody lovely car that. In its element with a boot full of sawn-offs,moody artwork, and re-cast bullion.
