Colm's soaring/handsome voice carries this song... just as his musical prowess in covering the 5/4-time Helldivers theme amazed us... me hat's off to ye
Not sure why but Hozier's version sounds like he is breaking up with a person. Colm's version sounds like he got broken up for and is just repeating being called too sweet.
Might be controversial but, I have to admit that I like the more somber approach to this song. To me, it hits a lot harder than the original. Keep them coming, Mr. McGuinness.
What's that? One of my favorite, extremely talented, voice-of-an-angel Irishmen did a cover of another one of my favorite, extremely talented, voice-of-an-angel Irishmen, and managed make it sound like a completely different, yet equally beautiful song? Seriously dude, killer cover! always a treat to hear an amazing vocalist put their own spin on the work of another amazing vocalist. Keep cranking out the bangers man 😎
I love how you put your own spin on songs with your voice, it always adds a new depth and feeling to it. This was perfect Mr. Colm, thank you for sharing!
Compared to when you first started making videos during the pandemic, but until now?? Colm, holy crap, you've made extremely major progress as a singer, and I love all the types of music you've made over the years. Keep up the great work, Colm. Drink plenty of water and/or tea, and stay handsome, our favorite Irishman 😄.
just to the point of goosebumps - and, honestly, to tears in the eyes at the last chords. it was wonderful, Colm. thank you so much for the wonders of music. stay *absolutely handsome*.
This song makes Hozier the 4th ever Irish artist to hit number 1 on the USA charts, the others being Gilbert O'Sullivan (1972), U2 (1978), and Sinéad O'Connor (1990). Esteemed company to be in, he and his mother nation should be proud
Love this. And it's taken me 3 years of listening to his music through Critical Role. Learned that recently. Felt like a dolt, but glad I have been a fan of his for years now. And in a perfect world these two would go on tour together, and I would be in the audience in the front row, wishful thinking, but a girl can dream.
I've been following Colm for a very long time and I'm always so excited to see his releases and this certainly does not disappoint, in all honesty, none of them disappoint. Please keep up the amazing work. I always look forward to your next video.
I had no idea that a song that already made me feel such intense feelings could possibly make me feel anything deeper. And then Colm said hold my tea. 😭♥️
SOOOOOO glad to hear you using that spectacular range again!! In recent covers (such as bohemian rhapsody and leaves from the vine) I've noticed a heavier use of the deeper parts of that range, and don't get me wrong the deep singing is amazing, you do it better than anyone on UA-cam imo, but the emotion you can put into the song when you use a wider range just can't be beat. Came here for the deep voice, but stayed for the whole range :))
I say this often, but I'll say it again: you're so good with everything you do! Your talent, skill and effort all shine in your videos and I'm very glad to be able to listen to your music. Thanks for sharing!!
Dear God, Colm! That was delicious! You have the right amount of rasp to the words and your high notes give it so much emotion. I love the lilt you put on the end of 'neat'... it gave me chills!
The original feels to me like the singer doesn't want to let go of their vices and the subject isn't worth it to them while this version feels like the subject IS worth it but the singer CAN'T let go of their vices. I prefer this version for the simple reason that I prefer more intense emotions in music.
I used to listen to this and think it was about a relationship but then my husband told me it reminds him of burnout. Just being so overwhelmed by life and it's hardships that even the good things are just too much and you're just desperate for the simple uncomplicated things. I can't hear anything else anymore and this covers slower more subdued feel brings it out even more.
As a veteran this sounds like the internal thoughts we have after a failed relationship or when we want to start a new one but don't think we deserve it because of our experiences
Nice! Love all the different takes on covers of this song I've been seeing. Lot of different vibes. Cole's nailed a more somber take on the song compared to some others I've seen and it's fantastic.
Colm, I need to tell you. When Hozier dropped this song, within three days I'd had it on repeat multiple times. It was just exactly what I wanted and needed. Hozier has been special to me, again, lately. He's woken up and opened a lot, he's always been a gem. So I was legit 🥲 when I saw this. It was everything I wanted. I, too, take the upbeat songs I love and turn them into dirges. Perhaps because dirges feel nice in the body to sing, perhaps because it feels like an honor is being presented, whatever is sung about. This song merited it. Love you, Irish daddy 🩵✌️
Followup, I hadn't watched the video yet, I was always hands full when I listened. So I watched. I realized how strange your wardrobe choice was for the bulk of the song. I noticed how janus face the lighting came through, and I know how excellent and intentional you are with lighting. And of course the entire circumstance and identity shift at the end. Love you Irish daddy 🩵✌️
