At the very bottom of the Super Mario 64 Iceberg, a phrase labeled "the internal plexus of the castle" caught the eyes of many people. But what is it exactly? In this video we're going to cover it from A to Z, but the mystery of the castle plexus is confusing because it has a lot of different ways that it can be analyzed. It's not a surface level mystery like L is Real 2401 once was (before Luigi was actually found in the files). My theory is that peach was trying new dresses when she suddenly got stuck in one and couldn't take it off. It stayed there so much that it became a solid thing.

Someone actually sent a letter to Nintendo asking all sorts of questions, one of them being about Princess Peach’s castle. Nintendo responded with, “Princess Peach has two castles; one for her art gallery, and one to live in.”
(Fun fact: in the list of questions, the person also asked “how do bomb-ombs reproduce,” and Nintendo responded “with gunpowder and love.”)
There's gotta be more than 2, due to Peach's Castle having different layouts and locations in almost every game.

It's easy to explain everything:
Bowser had Kamek change the interior of the castle to include all those weird traps like infinite stairs, boos in the courtyard, trapdoor leading to the first bowser fight, etc. Sure, Kamek doesn't appear in game, but he still exists in the Mario universe. He could've just left once his job was complete.
It's weird. Of course this explanation is the most likely one in-universe, especially with how fleshed out Kamek's abilities have become since 64, but back then it was so... eerie having that fear of the unknown. Why is the castle like this? Why is it so desolate?

RE the no furniture, nintendo officially commented in an email to someone that Peach is so rich she has 2 castles, one for furniture, and one for art.

Honestly, given the overall inconsistency between her castle in the games (some even without a moat!) I've come to the conclusion that Peach simply just has multiple castles.

@@logangaskill4 Bowser has way more than just 8 castles. He keeps building new ones with each game, and the ones in Super Mario World were all destroyed by Mario and Luigi.
I think since Bowser keeps invading they have to relocate or sometimes just change up the interior, I think in SM64 Bowser has simply changed the interior

my brain melted when you said he built the castle before creative mode was invented.... BEFORE!!!! That's a hell of an ambitious project there and i salute!!!! :O I don't think i could ever get tired of hearing/learning/theorizing about other dimensions or parallel dimensions.... :3

Duplication glitches were very abundant before creative mode. it was crazy over powered lol

My headcannon is that Peach is so unbelievably rich that she has a castle for her art (64) a castle for doing her royal duties (odyssey) and a castle she lives in.
Edit: I know her castles appear in other games too, I only mentioned those games because they were the only ones that were mentioned in the video and the most of the mario games I have played didn't have the inside of her castle (Galaxy) or it appeared once in the background (3d World).
Edit 2: I'm not saying those are her only castles, you can stop pointing out games that have other castles. I just wanted to share my explanation for why her castle in 64 is filled with art and not furniture.

I always thought that Bowser's magic was what caused the castle to look like that. He morphed the interior into something more akin to what he wanted... Or the interior is a sort of pocket dimension that looks loosely like what it would but not quite.

peach's castle has been in a lot of games, it might be interesting to see a comparison of all of them, with a focus on how things are moved around and changed. the paper mario 64 version in particular has a much more believable and fleshed-out version, with its library, kitchen, bedroom, ect.
That one is probably her living Castle where she actually lives considering the.. emptiness of the others.
As a child I had nightmares about the painitng of lethal lava land and was too scared to jump in that painting. My brother had to clear that course
My theory is that Bowser has twisted the castle with magic/star power
That explains the magic paintings, the fact that nothing is aligned correctly or actually fits and certain rooms are missing
My theory on this one is built around a sort of “string theory” concept. For those unaware, string theory (or at least wormhole string theory) is the theory that when the universe was first created, it had holes in it that were linked together by pathways called strings, which were then stretched out when the universe expanded. This is sort of an inverse concept. The castle was mysteriously shrunk on the outside, and the interior areas and sections are completely different locations linked by “strings”. When the castle was first built, the doors were all linked to the room they went to with strings. Then, somehow, the castle was shrunk. The interior rooms were warped out into space, still connected to the exterior castle by the doors. If a toad were to drill through the wall, they would find and empty black nothingness. If they were to go through a door on this side, they would find themselves once again in the void, as they went through the opposite side of the door where the infinite void exist. The only way to escape would be to go back out through the physical hole they made. Peach was being kept in a physical room at the top of the exterior castle, while mario was running through the interior sections in space that had been warped and altered by bowser and his minions.

Imagine knowing that Bowser's secret room actually was a hoax made by one of the SM64 youtubers.
I feel like a lot of the "Liminal Spaceyness" of Mario 64 comes from the fact that devs had to make the absolute most out of the console's relatively limited resources. Everything in M64 exists to be interacted with using Mario's specific toolset, so of course, there'd be no need for furniture that doesn't fly at you, a functional castle interior, etc.
The result is a world that is empty of everything except things with direct use, one that clearly fails to be as full or as realized as what it's textures and music and theming depicts, but fundamentally ergonomic, designed to light up the player's brain in gratifying ways through paring down world interaction solely to what is intuitive and operable with Mario's platforming.
It's almost like "fairy circles", mushrooms that grow in a circular pattern so akin to something of intentional, human design that it spurs the natural intrigue and curiosity of the humans that recognize it as such with no frame of reference for the actual natural phenomena at play; but here, no such natural phenomena exist. If anything, it is the opposite: a space of pure artifice with the scantest frills of false naturalism.
I'm probably being a stick in the mud for not entertaining the creepypasta aspects here, and if that's your jam, go for it- but I feel like the weird interplay between intentionally designed space and the breakdown of that space's diegesis under even slight scrutiny is fascinating.

@@desu2000 In my copy, if you took too long, you'd catch glimpses of the princess around the castle-only very thin and pale. She would dissapear as soon as you angled the camera for a proper look, but it always used to creep me out as a kid. And when you beat the game...she didn't come out of the stained glass window. Or appear at all, really. The window was noticably gone, leaving a hole, but nothing came out. Post game, any time you looked at the hole with the camera, you heard this hollow ambience. This game, man.
Peach is likely a static prisoner, of sorts. While not being capable of eating, breathing, etc., she may also not even need to do so in such a magic prison concealing her in a way that the passage of time has little to no affect to her bodily functions, therefore explaining how at the end when she is released she appears to be in a condition with little to no difference than as we see her in the start.
There was one time I was scared to go to the basement because I though i would find dead luigi, then there was another time I was scared of the top floor because of the ceiling going dark, there is just something a bit creepy in that room

The part where he speaks about the lack of furniture reminded me of a post in which someone asked Nintendo a total of 50 questions about SM64 via email (such as "How do Bob-Ombs reproduce?" which was answered with "Through a mixture of gunpowder and love.") and one of the questions was about the lack of furniture, which was answered with Peach having two castles: a castle meant to store paintings and a castle meant to store furniture.

I love this new iceberg stuff. I loved dicussing all the good creepypastas like Ben Drowned and Buried Alive with my friends in the playground when I was younger. We needed some new ones!
This is a very interesting video, I always found the Internal Plexus theory confusing but this helped me understand it a lot more
A lot of games (and maybe cartoons) use this concept. I always just imagine the exterior to be an exaggeration

The whole game gave me the most joyful feeling I've ever felt in my life
I still remember one of my childhood dreams about SM64DS, more specifically about unlocking Waluigi. My dream was that you could use the cannon to enter the Peach painting on the castle exterior. Once you do this, you'd be in a boss battle against Petey in a strange, generic castle room. From here the details go a bit hazy but once you defeat Petey I remember things starting to get creepy including a creepy message displayed to the user but sadly I can't remember the details or if Waluigi actually unlocked.
Tl;dr my brain contributed to this mess years ago and is kindly preventing me from sharing the important details.
I think there was a rumor about that, actually. After you beat the Piranha Plant boss, you end up back in the castle grounds as Waluigi, but they're completely flooded with water. You then grab a Power Flower, which gives you a sort of lightning powerup that you use to break something and drain the water.

I’m disappointed in the Iceberg for missing my conspiracy. Specifically “Wet Dry World is a model in a dumpster”
I remember when I was a kid and "accidentally" clipped through the wall in SM64DS and discovered that the castle was empty. And then glitched myself in the courtyard only because I wanted to reach the top of the castle early and the old vanish cap stage with other characters besides Wario only for discovering that I couldn't do that (because the loading zone wasn't active so I basically softlocked myself). Good times.

As a kid playing 64 DS, there was always something vaguely unsettling about it. I think it's the emptiness of the only other inhabitants being ghostly toads, and how every other character is hostile.
None of the levels ever truly felt safe to me, and the castle was almost worse due to its near lack of enemies, yet still being infested with ghosts.
I was always too scared to enter the courtyard after the Boos appeared, and as soon as I unlocked the moat door I always entered the basement that way. Until I got a friend to unlock Luigi and get the BBH stars, I played through most of the game with just Mario and Yoshi.
The way y'all take this game so seriously is so amusing to me
I think this stuff is purely for fun, and brings back the nostalgia of old creepypastas. I wouldn't say people are taking it incredibly seriously.

Interesting enough, the Princess castle layout is different in every game.
My theory on the living spaces of the castle, you need the power of the stars to fuel the castle so they can morph the castle and all surrounding area to different shapes and places, hence both why in different versions of the castle (ie: mario odyssey and galaxy) the castle is in a different place and looks different in general, and why the inside can vary from game to game

when I was younger I always thought that Bowser had cursed the castle using the power stars. Using their power, he sealed everyone/thing within distant worlds accessed through the paintings, created an infinite staircase, and set trap doors. He could have even been responsible for the existence of the basement and the haunted courtyard. The actual power held within a power star in Mario 64 is never revealed either, let alone 120 of them, so it wouldn't be too crazy to assume that they were strong enough to enchant an entire castle. After the stars are returned to the castle and peach is saved, I assumed that it returned to normal. All the furniture would return, the toads wouldn't be bound to a single vanishing state, and heck, maybe even Luigi would appear. It would look like it does in Mario Odyssey. But we never get to explore the Mario 64 world in a state were Bowser is gone and Peach has returned, so we never find out.

I always thought Peach's Castle in sm64 and it's remake was super creepy. As a kid I didn't unlock Luigi in the ds version because I was too scared of Big Boo's Haunt. Every room was always unsettling to me though. Everything being so empty, barely any characters being there at all, Bowser's creepy laugh with the jingle and text saying you can't enter a door. Even the Peach's Castle theme was somehow scary to me, probably just cause it was so closely associated with that place. I felt a lot more at home in something like Delfino Plaza or the Comet Observatory since they were much more populated and made a lot more sense.

my headcanon is that Bowser laid some kind of curse on the castle to transform it into a giant trap for Mario, and as soon as Peach is freed, the curse is lifted and it becomes a normal, liveable castle. There was no kitchen or oven to bake a cake for Mario when we were inside to see, so how else would you explain it? Is Bowser just a giant allegory for the experimental AI that personalizes the traps of the game to your psychology?

Simple explanation: Peach is a Time Lord. Castle is a TARDIS with a chameleon circuit. Daisy, Princess Toadstool, Paulina, and Rosalina are different regenerations of Peach.

I love hearing people go off the wall theorizing about peach’s castle cause it always drove me nuts in the ds version, wondering where the island that the castle courtyard is located on, where the paintings took you, the little bit of dialogue from the bosses that suggested these characters lived in some kind of bigger world...

Hey, I can actually explain away this one. I don't know about the validity of this, but someone from Tumbler said their husband E-mailed Nintendo of Europe, and asked like 50 questions about Mario 64. One of those questions was "Why is there no furniture in Princess Peach's Castle?" to which Nintendo of Europe allegedly responded, saying that Princess Peach actually has 2 castles. One for her artwork, and one for her furniture.
Again this is from a Tumblr post so I can't exactly say with 100% certainty that this is the case, but going by pure logic, this just makes a lot of sense, doesn't it?
Same goes for the Sylvain Castle from Terranigma (SNES JRPG game). Looks smaller from the outside but huge from the inside. Also had problems building the castle with the outside and the inside. At the end I had to change the outside at some point. Stretching and increasing the height, so the rooms would fit and connect. It was a blast to build but also a bit sad that I couldnt replicate it as much as the casle in the game.
I would love to see how the interior of the slide in Cool Cool Mountain compares to the exterior of the level itself.
They should've made the castle EXTRA BIG so the art gallery and the floors can fit in!

I have always found the castle to be creepy and honestly scary. From the emptiness feeling, the ghosts in the hallway and courtyard, the creepy basement. The castle feels so dead. And especially that laugh bowser does when you try and enter an area you can’t enter yet. Anyone else felt that too?
