I have a question about the way the dyno acts with different amps of the same rating. What is it that makes the dyno count up slower on some amps and faster on others (even if they were 300W each for argument's sake)? It seems to me that the ones that provide the power faster are better, right? For headroom and dynamic capability?
Man that’s probably because around the time of release of this amp, I personally hooked up around 200 of these things everyone had one of these or the 1200w version....I don’t personally think I have ever seen so many of 1 style amp between the other audio shops and myself there must of be thousands of these in our area it was ridiculous the did work well....that’s why I want to see what they really put out they definitely didn’t sound bad set up correctly
I own this amp but the 760w, bought it used for 60 bucks, and still love it! Ive abused it over the years and rarely it will cut off/clip from getting hot but thats about the worst of it! It kicks ass
Hell yes! I do not know if you remember me requesting a Sony amp test but you got one finally! You rock Big D! Way back when we all had one of these joker's....and I don't remember being disappointed!
My first AMP back in 2001, loved it. Had 2 12 Inch MTX thunder 6000’s and loved every minute of it for being a young high school kid. Thanks for the video. Brought back some memory’s.
Anyone giving you smack about the Kappa Perfect hasn't got a clue what they're talking about. That's a great sub, it deserves better than a pre-fab box but the sub itself is hard to fault. I've got a pair of 10.1's and they can get stupid loud and sound fantastic doing it.
I had a 10 inch in a home made ported box I simulated is software and fit to the trunk of my monte carlo. Unfortunately I pushed the box too far forward and at high excursion the cone and surround hit the trunk lid torsion springs and distorted the cone and coil assembly seizing it... But for a short while it definitely had some massive bass. It was powered by a 700w zapco amp if I remember right.
man how can anyone hate on your sub !? i have a few perfect 10.1's and they are great subs , they didnt take a ton of power to work and sounded great , nice 2'' longer wind height coil and seeing how they still work today is pretty good in my eyes
Definitely not hating on the sub. Infinity makes awesome quality products and that sub is no exception. Infinity and JBL I believe are owned by Harman- Kardon International I believe and you know how good JBL is. James B. Lansing had a passion for audio. And the companies founded after him reflect that passion.
Not too shabby. What really impressed me was the amount of headroom this amp has. Great for those kick drums and dynamic peaks. Great video brother!! 👌
@@TheoneDragon51 Back then I always ran punch amps but my car got broke into so my gf bought this amp for my birthday. Hooked it up to some old JL Audio 12's I had and it was pretty nice.
Big D thanks for finally testing my amp!! Had one of these pushing two typeR 10s @ 1ohm in my Metro back in the day. Went through tons of different head units (and even swapped out to CV and eventually sounstream subs) but never really had a reason to change my awesome Xplod amp! The mobile es line was definitely on another level from Sony's more pedestrian models and this test proves it. This amp is still running to this day in my Canyon.
This is great. I got one of these when they came out and been using it ever since. I just retired it like 2 years ago and I still have it. I couldn't tell you how many subs it went through. Great to see what it really does. Thanks BigDWiz
Sony should bring back the Mobile ES line. They already have the most"bad ass" SQ head unit on the market in the RSX-GS9 so it`s obvious that when they want to, they can build serious mobile audio products.
I love the "You big dummy! from Sanford and Son. I would love to see when an amp does 500w or more above rated power instead of you saying "yeah boy!" hearing Grady from Sanford and Son say "Good googily moogly!" 😂
I’m still running a Sony Xplod 600 Watt 4 channel on my mids and highs and love it. Bought it from my Cousin for 40 bucks , it’s been in three vehicles now and still playing strong.
I used to have the Sony xplode 12" subs and I loved them. They sounded good and hit the low bass pretty good. Actually hit them better than my Memphis subs
My brother and I both have Xplod amps from 2000 that are still working to this day. His is the 1200watt 2 channel and mine is the 600watt 2 channel. Awesome amps for the time and price.
Also who thumbs down this mans videos ...true life long bass heads like this gentleman here smd and myself love to see good bad or ugly what really does what! Once upon a time you really had to sit down and tear into stuff and know what you were doing to find out even half of this info!! Keep up the great work
While working for Ultimate Electronics, a now defunct mid-high end tech shop something like Best Buy, we sold tons of Xplod gear. We all secretly laughed that it might live up to it's badly chosen name...but it didn't. It all performed pretty dang well for the price. Nice to see it tested like this!
The dynamic power of this amp at 1 ohm is amazing since playing music dynamic numbers are reay important this thing hit what over 1400 watts that's alot of power on music. I know ppl that still run this amp on a set of pioneer premier subs and the dudes sub hit hard not a bad amp at all thanks for dyno this amp so ppl can see sony es amps make decent power.
True i always thought these were junk cause back in highschool allcmy friends had stuff like this and we were broke as shit still wanted one though considering back then i had a legacy red series amp on a 15" pyramid was absolute trash man
I remember these from back in the day. Never even considered them though. Mainly because I could never get past the ridiculous way they look, and still can't. I'd happily run some old ES stuff though. Sony seems to be one of those companies that had good eras, and bad eras. With home and car audio. Never were consistent though. In looks, and quality. But when they went for it, and did it right. They easily competed with the best.
I had this amp when I was in high school it did it's job very good It never died or exploded it rattled my whole car with 2 Rockford p2s I eventually upgraded of course but 4 years of nearly max volume with this amp, very good times
Man thanks for bringing back my good old days lol I had one of these pushing two audiobahn flame series 12s in an awful box with terrible wiring in the back seat of my 85 fox body mustang lol. Iv bagged on these amps for years and was super surprised to see it put out what it did! Brings back some really good memories
Actually Big D Wiz Sony made two versions of this Amp. In the 2001 Car Audio and Electronics buyers guide it is showing the version that is not mobile ES. That model is the XM-3001SXD. That model is identical to the mobile ES version. The model number of the Mobile ES version is XM-6001GXD. The XM-6001GXD specifications are identical. The difference is the cosmetics and the mobile ES has a phase warp adjustment. The XM-3001SXD has a silver X with black xplod emblem. The XM-6001GXD has a black x with an aluminum silver colored xplod emblem. But they are effectively the same amp except those minor differences.
@@vanessal7291 Notice both amps have exactly the same fuse rating. They are both class D amps. The heatsinks are exactly the same size. The power ratings are exactly the same. The guts are identical in every way including the size and quantity of the capacitors and toroid transformers and the amount of transistors for the power supply and output section and they both use PWM Class D amplification. Do a search for the ampguts of both amps and see for yourself. If it's a class D amp its sound quality is not going to be better because it is a mobile ES amplifier. It's not going to more efficient because it is a mobile ES amplifier. It's just clever marketing.
No!!! The ES. Version has an 18db lowpass filter while the xpload has a 12db. They are NOT the same by no means. Sony didn't put ES on everything because it stands for elevated standards that the base xpload just didn't have, so do more research before making a statement like that (marketing 😂😂
You are absolutely right. The ES line had a 18db lowpass filter while the base xpload has a 12db. Like I told the other guy, Sony, didn't put ES on everything because it stands for elevated standards
If I recall properly, dropping the Ohm load will, by mathematical and electrical theories, reduces the efficiency. So, the efficiency drop with Ohm drop isn't surprising. The lower the Ohm, the closer to a short circuit. Also, the lower the Ohm load, the less stable the amp is, the poorer the quality of signal/sound, more heat, etc. There really isn't much point to run any speaker under 2 Ohm; although, a 2 Ohm speaker might actually drop impedance under 2 Ohm during real-time operating.
I used to work at Paradyme Car Audio in Sacramento, CA and my car was set up with the Sony ES Xpod gear for the store demo. That amp ran my 3 10’s at 1.3ohms without breaking a sweat. My ‘95 Civic hatchback metered at 147 yet we built it as a sound quality car. Got the trophies to with them from both IASCA and the Sony private dealers Western regional invitation.
I had one of these pushing 2Memphis 10's in ported box behind seat of single cab Mazda pickup hit very hard & never had a problem.. very good amp for the money
@WillistonAudioLabs It has taken me a few month to respond here. Gotta say thanks for testing this one, I have actually been running this exact amp daily on a dual 2ohm Sundown SA-8 v.2, rated 500w RMS. It beats the holy hell out of that sub, but the sub is a work horse and keeps on tickin. I actually need to upgrade the terminal on my box, because I noticed the plastic is distorting/melting from the heat where the metal posts are...I'm guessing that terminal is probably rated for a typical home speaker at around 300w. Anyways, I'm one of the bigger advocates of the Sony amps, they are seriously under rated in most circumstances, especially their smaller amps. Just a short background of me, I started installing for the Circuit City Roadshop back in 2000, I was 17. I left Circuit City to install for Best Buy and a couple local shop side jobs in early 2002. Installed for Best Buy until I graduated college in 2004, and I installed MANY of these Sony amps, always with good results and a happy customer. The biggest issue any Sony amp has is it's Overcurrent protection mode, you could be slamming away having a good day and the amp would go into protect. Essentially, it's Overcurrent mode was the amp basically saying your impedance was too low. Obviously this only happened when you wired it up at it's limit, in the situation of this amp 1ohm. I will occasionally enter this protection mode with my current 2ohm DVC wired in parallel. A simple power cycle of the amp fixes the issue. I'm thinking the binding posts on my box might be contributing to it at the moment when it happens, but it doesn't happen enough on my current setup to investigate. Now, this series of X design Xplod ES amps had a few different models: 1,2,4, and 5 channels. They all had a NON ES sister. There was absolutely zero design change of the internals between the ES line and the Non ES line, OTHER than phase shift processing. Every single model I have cracked open looks exactly the same other than that, included layout and components. It was simply an easy way for Sony to up-market their products, and is also the last line of ES amps produced. They didn't sell these ES amps very often, as ES in general was dying off. Their hype got tainted by their marketing, hence the common claim that their Sony amp Xploded. Every single model though was underrated, including the 5 channel. The only model I would not recommend would be the 5 channel, it was severely under-powered by the numbers, like 125w was its rating on the sub channel and even back in 2003 this was embarrassing. Along with that, the four channel section was rated less than its 4 channel sister amp, and had a price tag of over $500. For $600 at the time, you could get the 4channel and this mono block, so it just wasn't worth it. Along with the 5 channel having lousy specs, it had a single power supply...so it was shit. Any of other 2 channel or 4 channel could be bridged with impressive results. The 4 channel would push 200x2 aaaaalllll day long bridged, great for highs along with the 2 channel pushing 200x2 at 4ohms and less heat. They were GREAT amps. Would I suggest them over Rockford or MTX back in the day? Yes, and I did. You could buy 2 Sony amps for the price of one Rockford EASILY. Of course that always depended on what your budget was, but 9/10 times people who would roll into Best Buy for a system had no idea what to buy, and typically chased brands. Rockford was always popular, and some people loved buying a 200s over one of these just for the name. Any case, this series was decent. Not great, but decent. You got what you wanted out of them and rarely needed more. Now, the Xplod series before these, NON ES...just a red amp without the X logo were fantastic amps. Specifically the XM-2252HX. That amp is an absolute beast of a 600w amp. Extremely flexible. I would use that amp on my front highs, and it ALWAYS put a smile on my face. Right now I'm running the Mobile ES XM-5046 bridged to my 3 way components up front. While certainly a VERY detailed amp, I find myself missing that XM-2252HX every time I decide to go full tilt. Remember Sony's red Dodge Dakota? It had 10 Xplod 10's and like 20 of the XM-2252HX's, that's the only amp Sony used in that truck. How about the Xplod subs? Well..they could take the power they said they could which is great, but for some reason they put the fS on those subs in the 50hz range which is just too high, so nobody ended up liking them unless you were into techno. I could never find a box that suited them correctly. Not a bad sub, sounded good but they just couldn't dig low. All this being said, for anyone else reading this...do NOT fear the "Xplod". It will not go Xplod on you, and if it does it has been electrically or physically abused. These were SOLID amps back in the day. We would get more returns on the smaller Rockfords than these Sony's. They rarely came back if installed properly. Feed em, they hungry. They get hot, so get over it (except this model). The two models the steer clear of are the 222 and 444, they were a joke. That was Sony's below budget entry amp at the time is what ultimately gave Sony a rotten reputation. Hope you read this shit lol. I was actually supposed to had deliver a box/sub to you a few years ago, a buddy named Chris was coordinating it, but I guess it fell through...I dunno. I'm in the Wilmington area, love to meet up some day. I have a bunch of old Sony amps we can Xplod on the dyno hahahahahaa
@ Williston Audio Labs Back in '01 I ran the Xplode 760 watt amp on 2 Infinity Kappa 12s in a prefab bandpass in a 1994 Geo Prism with 1 half of the back seat folded down for air space..... There were people that swore I had at least 2 15s. Even shut down a couple of guys that actually had 15s!!! Tough little amp and even tougher subs.... MAN take me back to to the simple days!! Now I'm running 2 DB Drive G5 15s on 2 DB Drive A7 2500.1 at 1/2 ohm and tuned to 37hz😎 Its a lifestyle that most wont understand!! Love the channel Derrick!!
I thought the early/mid 90's Sony amps (the silver ones) like the xm-6020 and the xm-4040 looked super classy and sleek. The Xplod line on the other hand looked like they were designed by a can of Mountain Dew wearing an Affliction shirt. lol :)
Had one of these new back in the day hooked to three Xplode 4-ohm 12's. It quickly smoked all three of them lol. Warranty'd the subs, sold them and got a pair of 12w6's and the ES drove them great. I'd totally rock one of these today if I came across one.
Not a big fan of the cosmetics of the Sony Xplod amps but, the power seemed good, especially for a 17-18 year old early class D. On the other hand, those Infinity Perfects are sweet! People need to recognize!!!
Yeah I’m impressed it performed as well as it did. Plus I forgot to show how it was packed by eBay seller. Unbelievable that it actually survived with NO protection whatsoever 🤷♂️
Really like the updates to your video format. More compact 10 min vid was great. Surprised by this little amp. Keep educating these knuckleheads about the Harman Kappa Perfect. Awesome sub. Well done Big D!
Had one of these back around 2002. Man, this one brings back some memories. I didnt have the cash for any of the higher end stuff back then. Seeing this it seems I didnt do too bad.
And now I'm picking up a new (old) Sony Xplod setup to put in my 01 mustang bullitt. Grabbing a piece here and there when I find for good price in like new condition. See yall later
Hey big D I I saw this when it first came up .... But I forgot to comment that the reason it was getting hot and didn't do better .. was because when you took it apart I could tell the thermopaste on the moffsets was awfully dried out .. it needed to be wiped off and put new in it would of done better I'm sure ... Great test and thanks for the videos 👍
I used to run these style Sony amps all the time! From the 1000watt in this video to the 1200watt and the 1500 watt. They all never let me down and now I know why lol!
Been waiting for this for a long time.. Very good test Big D wiz. Almost the same with audiopipe amps in the way they like dynamic power. I knew alot of people who ran these growing up.
BIG D your pretty cool bud . You've taught me alot more about caraudio ..your pretty informative.. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND OBSESSION....I'V been hooking up caraudio in my bedroom.. since 92" i was 12/13yr old when my buddys bro got me into it....
I had an amp similar to it. It looked about the same but was all black. I think it was a 2 channel. I had it hooked to a 10" audiobahn. With the chrome flame basket. Also that blue truck in the background is nice. Great video
I’m admittedly not a Sony fan. As I sit here thinking about it, the only Sony product I own is a PS3, ha! However, this amp did WAY better than I thought it would. Big ups to D for the effort getting into that thing! 👍
Same here , only sony products Ive bought are a ps1 , psp (old fat one) and ps3 and all still work till this day. Gotta say quite decent power from this amp , I didnt think it would go over its rated power.
Very interesting video. First dyno test I ever seen with a sony amp, thanks alot. Alot better then I originally expected, very very interesting video, thank you.
I use one of these old xplod amps in my car currently, it runs a 12" pioneer perfectly. The xplod branded subwoffers are trash but the amps are rock solid.
We sold tons of these sony amps, they seemed to impress more than most of the brands we had, at least in the watts per dollar department. They were actually a little under rated.
As long as they don't bring back those thin plastic xplod speaker cones on the full range speakers. I usually used pioneers because the cones were more rigid but they were a little muddy unless you got a good set of components with the arimid fiber reinforced cones. But as a high schooler where most speakers were purchased at Walmart or sears rather than mail order and funds were limited those crappy Sony and pioneer speakers were generally what ended up in everyone's cars.
So the amp got 1.86% less power than the ad said it would @ 1.33 ohms. Realize that is less than the component tolerances in the amp. If you test 10 of these amps one might do more or less than the 810 watts. Remember you can't even hear the difference between 795 watts and 810 watts. So in my opinion based on the amount of power it made it was less than 5% away from the ad so that is acceptable. Heck you even mentioned that you never even see anything near 1000 watts from an amp when it is printed on it. Yet you were able to get 1000 watts dynamically. Actually a lot more. This amp is winner to me but that is my OPINION of course.
This brings me back to my working at best buy days used to buy car audio for buddies with my discount was almost half price think I bought one of these at one point
Thumbs up for pulling the board.. and those old infinity refs.. a pair of tens was my first clean setup in a 90 maxima.. beautiful sq and loud.. keep it up Big D.. kev*
Check out the Ralph Steadman artwork on that Sony ad, That's pretty awesome. He's the guy that did the artwork for Hunter S. Thompson's books and articles.
Bought this amp a few months back for $15 from a thrift store. Works great. It cuts out when someone calls me don't know why distortion bluetooth headunit I guess? It also used to cut out because my battery was going bad. I run it at 2ohm. Its on old school Mofo's.
Very surprising results with that amp. It did better than I figured. How about testing one of the real Old Skool Sony amps, the XM-10020?? Had a pair of them back in ‘93 on a couple of 12’s and they were absolutely a workaholic. I still have my 4045 and 4040 I believe they are, and I wouldn’t part with them for love nor money.
Yup, big thumbs up for opening up the amp as always. I liked Sony's mobile stuff back in the day, but I always hated that heatsink design. The previous ones that were red with the gold plates was a much cleaner looking design. Props for the test though! Keep 'em coming!
A friend of mine had a regular Sony Xpold amp on two Kappa Perfect 10's in a Camry... I still haven't heard deeper, truer bass than that. We used a Telarc Audiophile CD with a sound of rocket taking off, and it was scary! This was years ago, so who really knows if I'd feel the same now... But nothing's impressed me like that since then.
I use to have one of these . i had a another one that was black but looked the same that was a mono block. I never used the black one but i did use this one to replace the stock amp in my montecarlo back around 04 i think. it wasn't bad at all but i was only using it on the stock crap that was in the hat rack.
That is a similar heatsink connection to the Kenwood Excelon KAC X1R, though the Kenwood is a little different, even the Alpine MRV-T500 also mounted the fets to a separate sink that is secured to the main heatsink! With the size of that transformer, it may be a small diameter but there are some thick windings, I love the conformal coating they applied, this means it is less likely to short. But with all those smaller cap's, I have worked on a class D Pioneer that used an extreme amount of small caps like that, most companies don't go that far and use a minimal amount even if they are using larger diameter ones, they still design them on minimal standards. Efficiency is all about the transfer of heat from the fets to the heat sink, to keep their internal resistance low you must keep them cooler! Like with the LHC, they super cool small strands of OFC and it allows them to transfer millions of amps to the magnets without destroying those strands, those strands add up to probably about 10-12 gauge wire, But the supply wires going into the facility are as big as 8" in diameter or larger and it requires several of them! Poor cooling connections for transistors will seriously degrade an amps efficiency during high current and low impedance operation! The heatsink compound always used by manufacturers has very high thermal resistance and very low thermal conductivity "Probably no greater than 0.8-1W/m.k", this is why companies have created special compounds for cpu applications, if they applied something like Céramique 2 or better it would have lower thermal resistance and increased thermal conductivity in the range of 3.5-4+W/m.k which could change the efficiency some! Sometimes they try to get around this with an increased heatsink size, but this is still ignoring the issue, Rockford tried to combat this issue and it worked pretty well with the mosfet mounting systems, but the compound choice still hindered heat dissipation! Awesome Video Big D!
@@craigshelhammer5683 It can all depend on the brand, type and wattage, it is not as easy as one would think just to change thermal paste and won't promise a major increase in efficiency, but in some cases it can help. But because it would require completely removing the main board, cleaning all the fets and shielding if coated in compound that is used to prevent the mosfets from grounding to the sink and then cleaning the heat sink itself, it may not be a good choice for you to attempt. I usually only go this route when repairing an amp and I usually replace any ground prevention devices "these are sometimes silicone pads or plastic pads behind each mosfet" with a strip of Kapton tape, that way there is minimal distance between the fets and heatsink. Then you have to reassemble the entire amp, properly clamping the mosfets back down if secured by screw type clamps, because you want the mating to be as close as possible for the most efficient transfer, often times these days manufacturers use a spring clamp that is a pain to remove and could be broken easily, then are a pain to get back in, usually these require a home made specialized tool for easy removal, they also don't always promise a good tension! The way I see it, "If It Ain't Broke Don't Fix it"! The engineers of car Amplifiers just never really tried to properly understand the thermal aspects or dynamics of their designs to help increase efficiency and even when they almost think about it, they still cheap out due to cost additions, for them a few extra penny's per squirt of compound is just too big of an investment to make!
Umm,yea.not gonna attempt that until I learn more about amps then....not quite as easy as swapping a fan on a cpu and cleaning the old paste off and putting new on lol.thanks for the breakdown, tons of useful info in there ..got any advice on vids or "how to" books on learning the basics of amp repair?I can already solder and have been in the cell phone/tablet/pc repair business before and have a fundamental base on electronics already...just seems amps are a whole nother beast from what you described.
I just bought a 2001 f150 to beat on and this amp was in the back. It still works to. The speakers and box are a different story. Water had been leaking on them for years and a family of roaches has since moved in so I tossed it.
Awesome video Big D... I had an awesome set up circa 03' with 2 of the xPlode 1k amps.. One on 2 mtx 8000 series 10" 4 ohm dvc. And one on mtx 12" 8000 series SVC.. I ran the 10" dvc in separate sealed boxes on the outside of the 12" in a ported enclosure.. I wish I knew then what I know now..
People hate on that sub? Gotta be jealousy lol. My first big system had 2 kappa perfect 12s just like that one and they sound great and hit real hard. Still have em, love em
I recently picked one of these up for next to nothing. I've noticed some Japan made Mobile ES use Korean components and the Korean made Mobile ES use Japanese components. Not referring to the really old Japanese gear, they're really nice with Nichicon Golds and Sanken iirc.
I remember my first big system i got that wasnt the 50 dollar flea market special, was the $250 sony xplod with 2 12s, 1k amp, and the ported box from pep boys and i loved it
How is there 43 trolls with enough time to give a thumbs down on this channel??? I love the nostalgic vids brings me back to my crx days when I was 17 with 2 12s pointed straight at my head lol
Big D I love your sub I have two Infinity perfect 10's best subs I ever heard and I've been in to car stereo since I was hooking up Craig power booster EQ's to Pioneer Supertuner 3's lol
I don't have a print on this amp, but I wonder if that bank of rail caps is not wired in series-parallel (2 banks of 10 parallel caps series together) which would double the voltage rating at the same capacitance value. Would have to look closer at the back of the board to know without a schematic.

Hey D Wiz! I wanted to know if you could do a dyno test for an incriminator audio amp? That would be awesome
Heyyyy, BigD.. How do I send you a CT Sounds team 3k to dyno? Curiosity is killing me.
I have a question about the way the dyno acts with different amps of the same rating. What is it that makes the dyno count up slower on some amps and faster on others (even if they were 300W each for argument's sake)? It seems to me that the ones that provide the power faster are better, right? For headroom and dynamic capability?
I own this same model amp got it for 20$ at a yard sale love it
I hear you. Its all about how it's tuned.
Aww lucky
Man that’s probably because around the time of release of this amp, I personally hooked up around 200 of these things everyone had one of these or the 1200w version....I don’t personally think I have ever seen so many of 1 style amp between the other audio shops and myself there must of be thousands of these in our area it was ridiculous the did work well....that’s why I want to see what they really put out they definitely didn’t sound bad set up correctly
That’s a steal. These things sounded great back in the day for a budget amp. Hidden treasure
I own this amp but the 760w, bought it used for 60 bucks, and still love it! Ive abused it over the years and rarely it will cut off/clip from getting hot but thats about the worst of it! It kicks ass

Heard 2 kappa perfect 12s in a sealed box inside an extended cab truck. Was very impressed with the output. Extremely loud outside the truck
They are fantastic subs. Mine is the VQ version with multiple pole piece inserts
My first AMP back in 2001, loved it. Had 2 12 Inch MTX thunder 6000’s and loved every minute of it for being a young high school kid. Thanks for the video. Brought back some memory’s.
Thanks for the test BigDWiz. This amp did far better than I expected. Keep up the good work!
Anyone giving you smack about the Kappa Perfect hasn't got a clue what they're talking about. That's a great sub, it deserves better than a pre-fab box but the sub itself is hard to fault. I've got a pair of 10.1's and they can get stupid loud and sound fantastic doing it.
I have 2 12.1's i my daily right now running off of a Alpine MRV1200 at 2ohms.
Clean sound...very musical and efficient as hell.
They play deeper than most junk out there today too

You're exactly right man. It's a great mix of good output while still staying quite accurate and musical. Honestly they are a gem to me.
It was powered by a 700w zapco amp if I remember right.
they are nice sounding woofers and they also can take a beating
man how can anyone hate on your sub !? i have a few perfect 10.1's and they are great subs , they didnt take a ton of power to work and sounded great , nice 2'' longer wind height coil and seeing how they still work today is pretty good in my eyes
Not everyone...just the ones who don’t know what it is
People that aren't into car audio... Just kids
Yeah... It has respectable Xmax too, if you're interested.
I cant be the only one shocked by the results
I was fo sho 😲
Me too. I expected a lot less power. Always bagged on them.
I had one and got bagged on, I was not shocked by the results. People were just being biased.
@@ssjwes
I was running a old Hifonics boltar VIII
its bit of a eye opener for that Sony.
@@TheoneDragon51 Back then I always ran punch amps but my car got broke into so my gf bought this amp for my birthday. Hooked it up to some old JL Audio 12's I had and it was pretty nice.
Came up a little short on the 1.3 and 1 ohm certified tests but made up for it with it's dynamic output. Decent old school amp I'd say.
I have two alpine type s “ new gen “ 500rms each .. would a Sony 880 be able to push them at 1 ohm
This is great. I got one of these when they came out and been using it ever since. I just retired it like 2 years ago and I still have it. I couldn't tell you how many subs it went through. Great to see what it really does. Thanks BigDWiz
Cool man!
Sony should bring back the Mobile ES line.
They already have the most"bad ass" SQ head unit on the market in the RSX-GS9 so it`s obvious that when they want to, they can build serious mobile audio products.
Their new 6ch amp with DSP built-in looks promising 🤔
@@wal I'm still waiting on that Sony 6ch amp dyno...killing me brotha lol
Guess what they just did
I love the "You big dummy! from Sanford and Son.
Absolutely nothing wrong with your Infinity sub. I almost bought one back in the day. A friend of mine has one still. Good stuff.
I used to have the Sony xplode 12" subs and I loved them. They sounded good and hit the low bass pretty good. Actually hit them better than my Memphis subs
These were great little amps back in the day. Decent power for a decent price. Boom on a budget..
There's nothing little about this amp I have one of these and the 165d, both big amps
👌😬👍
Had this amp pushing two 15" MTX subs back around 2005/2006. I was happy with it.
👌😬👍
I always stick around for the guts. Thanks, Big D!
👌😬👍
900 watts from a Sony explod seems pretty good. The subs are equal quality in the correct box. Awesome video keep ‘‘em coming!
I had this amp back in 2001 during my High School years. Decent beginner amp.
Yup, my buddies in highschool would always run these.
They did bang on a budget.
Same, had one on 2 12 inch Rockford he subwoofers in a sealed box... it was great
You are still saving me thousands Audio is awesome and the facts are clearly shown No therapy needed. Just need to watch video about audio.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Always thought that was a horrible name for an amp or speakers, explode. Kinda like Pyle
Pyle Of...what? :D
No kidding. Sony was always pretty decent with their Mobile ES line, then they came out with this "xplode" crap.. :(
Pyle of...(wait for it!!!!) SHIT!!!!!
True i always thought these were junk cause back in highschool allcmy friends had stuff like this and we were broke as shit still wanted one though considering back then i had a legacy red series amp on a 15" pyramid was absolute trash man
Like painting flames on a race car ?
dude you are my hero. Also, anyone that hates on that sub has no idea what they are missing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The best sub i've owned in 15 years
I remember these from back in the day.
Wrong. There is more than just cosmetic and phase warp differences.
Sweet! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Wow, tons of info here...thanks!!
Man I will never thought that a Sony amp Wii meet it's ratings I just been blown away!
So this amp . Did more power than pheonix gold 2500. Mannnn that sorpriced me biggggg.
UA-cam and Big D wiz know what I want to watch! 🤗👍
Thanks brother 👌
I didn't realize the Xplod label was put on the Mobile ES stuff... Glad the Mobile ES heart was left intact. :-)
This Sony ain’t no phony 🤦♂️
BIG D your pretty cool bud . You've taught me alot more about caraudio ..your pretty informative.. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND OBSESSION....I'V been hooking up caraudio in my bedroom.. since 92" i was 12/13yr old when my buddys bro got me into it....
Oh yeah that’s what’s fun about car audio...you don’t need a car to use it!
I had an amp similar to it. It looked about the same but was all black. I think it was a 2 channel. I had it hooked to a 10" audiobahn. With the chrome flame basket. Also that blue truck in the background is nice. Great video
i love those kappa subs, sound so clean
I’m admittedly not a Sony fan. As I sit here thinking about it, the only Sony product I own is a PS3, ha! However, this amp did WAY better than I thought it would. Big ups to D for the effort getting into that thing! 👍
This Xplod surprised me. I was thinking 700 watts at the most
BigDWiz I was in the same area and I thought I was being generous, lol. Well done 👍
Regardless of the higher fail numbers, this was back in the day where the name brand amps were keeping each other honest
Those smaller 16 caps is why it has crazy good dynamic power.
We sold tons of these sony amps, they seemed to impress more than most of the brands we had, at least in the watts per dollar department. They were actually a little under rated.
Thumbs waaaay up BIG Homie! Thanks for the teardown.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great points sir. Component tolerances should be accounted for and it performed very close to ratings.
Im in SHOCK!
I never would have thought that am would do rated power.
Did you say people are hating on the Infinity perfect sub?
This brings me back to my working at best buy days used to buy car audio for buddies with my discount was almost half price think I bought one of these at one point
Thumbs up for pulling the board.. and those old infinity refs.. a pair of tens was my first clean setup in a 90 maxima.. beautiful sq and loud.. keep it up Big D.. kev*
👌😬👍
I have the 1200 watt version of this amp, works but I. The summer will cut off after a couple hours. Good amp
Check out the Ralph Steadman artwork on that Sony ad, That's pretty awesome. He's the guy that did the artwork for Hunter S. Thompson's books and articles.
Awesome 👏
I love that sub id love to have a brand new fresh set those infinity kappa perfect are literally a perfect sub.
Bought this amp a few months back for $15 from a thrift store. Works great. It cuts out when someone calls me don't know why distortion bluetooth headunit I guess? It also used to cut out because my battery was going bad. I run it at 2ohm. Its on old school Mofo's.
I remember these. They were so popular back in the day!
Yessir
I had this same on 2 Kicker CVRs wired at 1 ohm in a 1995 Toyota Corolla. I was setting car alarms off!!! No lie!!💯💯
👌😬👍
omg thank you for testing this amp out!!! as a teen/young adult i wanted this amp but could never get enough money saved up for it...thats awesome tho
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Boss mode comment 👈😎
Did not know that...thats pretty cool to know.
So is it worth it to crack open an amp and redo the thermal paste?or will it not improve that much?
Still have mines from back in da day. Still going strong
I had 2 760s. When they were new. They did good but got really hot. But never quit. I ran 2 infinity kapa 12s.
Got my thumbs up. Had that amplifier in 2002 in an Acura Integra
Very precisely arranged board and strong mosfet power supply and output transistors. Have you tested their 2252hx two channel monster amp?
I remember my first big system i got that wasnt the 50 dollar flea market special, was the $250 sony xplod with 2 12s, 1k amp, and the ported box from pep boys and i loved it
Great amp for its time i had 3 of them through out my teenage years
Those amps were a monster on a sub. For some reason people were giving them away. I think it was the color and design.
The head units looked really cool back then but I had an alpine head unit a jbl amp and 2 jl W0 12s and it slammmed!!!!! Never cut out
cool, Sony used to use nippon chemi-con caps 7:25 .
How is there 43 trolls with enough time to give a thumbs down on this channel??? I love the nostalgic vids brings me back to my crx days when I was 17 with 2 12s pointed straight at my head lol
Glad to see the electrolytic capacitors are all high quality Chemi-Cons.
I was always amazed how hot all of the sony xplod amps got.
Just before they explode?? 💥 👈😂
I had this on two of the competition Audiobahns...wired incorrectly.surprised I didn't melt the solder off the board. ..
Brings back memories. had one of these powering 2 sony 12's in a bandpass box. I thought it bumped hard for what it was.
Big D I love your sub I have two Infinity perfect 10's best subs I ever heard and I've been in to car stereo since I was hooking up Craig power booster EQ's to Pioneer Supertuner 3's lol
I think my Perfect sub is pretty cool. I will have some other subs in the setup soon too
I have had a few of these Explod amps. They've done decent.
I don't have a print on this amp, but I wonder if that bank of rail caps is not wired in series-parallel (2 banks of 10 parallel caps series together) which would double the voltage rating at the same capacitance value. Would have to look closer at the back of the board to know without a schematic.
I’m not sure brother
Awesome vids as usual. After the XM series never fooled with Sony amps again looks like i may have been wrong.
