Nice amp! Back in the day that was a perfectly capable amp for a couple of door or dash speakers. Back in then most head units only put out 2-5 watts per channel so having 20x2 was a nice step up. Fond memories of Sony gear from that period. There was an amp even smaller than that one (xm-2025 maybe?) and I had some ES amps and head units with the copper chassis and screws.
I have had a few of the XM-2025 amps. At the time, they were the smallest 2 channel amp that was bridgeable. Had one on an 8” Lanzar sub mounted behind the center console in my car along with a set up Cerwin Vega components, a Sony external crossover, and a Sony deck that had both pre-amp inputs and outputs! So the pre-amp outputs went to the crossover, then had mid range and tweeter signals going back into the deck. 2 channels of the deck ran the 5 1/4” mids and the other 2 channels ran the tweeters. It was a VERY clean, be it low power, setup. I love those old school Sony XM amps, even if they don’t make rated power!
7.5 amp fuse... Big Dummy Math = 75 Watts RMS. Before watching the video. I did have a Sony 4 channel back in the early 90s it was actually reconditioned. 45 W RMS x 4 used it for my internal door speakers.
When I got my first car in 85 I bought a Craig Power play 60 watt amp for my door speakers. Not the cleanest but a ton better than the 3 Watts per channel than the head unit put out. Hey Big D have you ever dynoed any old school Sherwood amps from the late 80s or early 90s? I have an SCP-1002 that drives a no name 3 way speaker box in the back seat of my Firebird for the past 30+ years. I think it’s rated 120X2 bridged. Would you think it would do anything close to that?
My first system consisted of 2 15in kicker comp in a box that was made 4 4 15's( never cut the other 2) the box was so big it couldn't stand up in a 86 jeep Cherokee on 2 kenwood kac 921 ( I still have one) and a BP 240 sherwood ( could not find a 240, but I have a 180 BP)on the Mtx terminator box with 2 15's 2 5in midrange and 2 horn tweeters. We didn't have a lot of affordable power back then, but we made up for it in box size, thanks to kicker in around 94 with their 1st gen Solo-Barics that claimed you didn't need a lot of space for big bass, it didn't impress me, I bought a 10in solo baric in a q logic box and clipped the shit out of on the first day, took it back to Barics stero trading post in maple shade Nj and traded that for a 1988 jl audio dual 12w5's dual 8ohm in a non carpet box made to specs, it was so big it took up the whole trunk in a 1990 cougar. Now I have a 12in triple stack of punches, but they still don't get as low as my W5's did. What we didn't have in power, we made up 4 in ingenuity
Sony products have always been alright. But that little amp does seem to bump a bit but not to the extreme by a long stretch of the imagination. RCA’s are on point though! Love the vid!
I always wondered what output these era Sony Amps put out I've had a few, bit different Too these and was always disappointed lol, as always your videos never disappoint 👌
Listen to that clean class ab or probably with heavier bias on A even damn the first track was clean, nice speakers too. I still have a clarion massive purple 150w rms (I think VNET amp) I'd send it in if it didn't cost so much from Australia lol but it kills even my jl hd series for top end clarity and smoothness sounds gorgeous. And jl know how to make a class d amp
I have a very similar amp but it's a darker gray almost a gun metal. I think it's the same model number? But might be mistaken. I also have the black and red 150w in my collection😊.
Hey Big D. When you talk about THD, at what point could a person even notice distortion? Would be an interesting test to see at what level of THD people start to actually hear the distortion. Also, would be interesting to see what frequency range an amp can actually handle. IF an amp says it does 20-20k, does it really? Just a thought, love the videos!
I remember someone was selling a Sony XM-7020 for $40 bucks back in the 90's. I ran home to grab $40 bucks but it was gone before I even got home I bet.
A Stereo shop that no longer exists anymore since the early 2k's, when you bought a pair of speakers like 6.5in for ya vehicle, you were given that amp for free.
I still believe the quality of watts back in the day were way different then now. Don't get me wrong there are quality amps today, In my opinion amps were built with more heart and soul then
Sony amplifiers were never known to heave a lot headroom or power I owned a car audio store .We sold Sony ,mainly CD players The amplifiers there was no demand For them . As far as high powered Decks go .Back then they started making higher powered decks . Sparkomatic made 1 good deck and it was high powered.Concord had the HPL-550 .That came out in 1985 . It had 15 wpc RMS 25 watts max They all had High power decks What was a game changer was the Pioneer MOSFET decks . Those things actually sounded like a small amplifier When it came to Walkmans,CD players VHS/Beta and headphones Sony was a leader Speakers and amplifiers Nope

Would be fun to see some GAS audio amp dyno test :)
The struggle was real, but I sure miss it.
Nice little tweeter amp from Japan
It’s a uPC2506 made by NEC and rated for “40W”. So obsolete that datasheets are hard to find.
This is a RIOT I still have a few of these IN BOXES🤣😂
good top of the line head units in 1994 had 20 watts times 4.
Would be cool to see a parts Express home plate amp tested
Would you have the old Sony Xplod 222 amp to test? I'd like to see it on the dyno LOL!!
I have a very similar amp but it's a darker gray almost a gun metal. I think it's the same model number? But might be mistaken. I also have the black and red 150w in my collection😊.
D4S crossovers almost the same size as the Sony amp. There’s tons of nostalgia inside that Sony though.
I was waiting for the 1ohm test after the video
Compared to the 5 watts a head unit had back in the day this would have been a pretty sweet upgrade...
Noticeable distortion with pure tones is about 1% but 10% with music.
Half an hour at 5% is a splitting headache but you really won't hear it. You might puke though.
I remember someone was selling a Sony XM-7020 for $40 bucks back in the 90's. I ran home to grab $40 bucks but it was gone before I even got home I bet.
That’s all we had way back
Bro i have a 350w sony xm 552zr amp can it run the sony xs-nw1202s
Subwoofer
You need to test a Kraco EQ Booster. LOL
Bringing the head BigD!
I have a Sony EXM-502 that I'd love you to Dyno!!
Lol i one of those with a pioneer rear speakers type ts-1750.
In a Daihatsu applaus.
Lol bring back times.
My is blue .
Hello.. could you review new pioneer ts1675v3 speakers please?
I had a 2x30 model that was decent for running my 6x9 speakers.
A Stereo shop that no longer exists anymore since the early 2k's, when you bought a pair of speakers like 6.5in for ya vehicle, you were given that amp for free.
Cool video
I thought i better stick to this channel of yours..
.
But..... D4S here too! 😢
Where would your fans go now😢
I had one of those, like 20 watts. it was 25 bucks at the Sony Outlet. Sounded good but not horribly powerful.
I still believe the quality of watts back in the day were way different then now. Don't get me wrong there are quality amps today, In my opinion amps were built with more heart and soul then
sounds great
I had one like this but blue fins
Had one of these in 98
At the beginning I thought 75a fuse 😳...then notice 7.5a 😂
Mbe or Bobby hook this man up with some new bookshelf boxes!!!👍🏿
I have that old Sony somewhere
Nice 👌
I couldn't afford something that fancy at that time. My budget was a firm $100 😂
Sony amplifiers were never known to heave a lot headroom or power
I owned a car audio store .We sold Sony ,mainly CD players
The amplifiers there was no demand
For them .
As far as high powered Decks go .Back then they started making higher powered decks .
Sparkomatic made 1 good deck and it was high powered.Concord had the HPL-550 .That came out in 1985 .
It had 15 wpc RMS 25 watts max
They all had High power decks
What was a game changer was the Pioneer MOSFET decks .
Those things actually sounded like a small amplifier
When it came to Walkmans,CD players VHS/Beta and headphones
Sony was a leader
Speakers and amplifiers Nope
