    Glad i'm not the only one who still has Phantom Menace figures mint in package...holding out for that day when the action figure market spikes, as well as interest in Phantom Menace toys....we are truly the dreamers of the dreams. Nice review.

      ***** I don't like to keep figures in package (mostly), because I feel that it kinda negates the purpose. If I'm going to get a cool Darth Vader toy, I'm going to put it with the rest of the figures. It just feels better to me.

    I liked that the whole plot led to Palpatine/sidious getting to power. So the ”win” in the end is really a loss. And that Anakin loses his mother and the one jedi believing in him - QiGon. The start of his downfall. I also love Yodas ”fear lead to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering”. And Anakin is also full of fear which leads to his downfall into darkness.

    The left to right thing in the podrace is clearly intentional, just like how Peter Jackson decided to have Frodo and Sam go from left to right in almost every scene. The series of whip pans in a row does feel a bit monotonous though, I remember the section that just has several pans in a row.

  • @Aken50
    @Aken50 4 роки тому +90

    11:31 OBJECTION Chris!
    The pod racing scene that has takes where they move from “left to right” is actually the one good thing George Lucas does right consistently with his directing and that is a little know thing called, RESPECTING SCREEN DIRECTION!
    The 180 degree rule! The idea that if you cut to a different take beyond where our subjects exist (in most cases scenes of dialogue between two people) the shot is weird!
    Forgetting the fact that moving from left to right is an ideal way to have these vehicles move since we as people in the western world naturally track things from left to right (just look at a book) but also it is brilliant way to shot and cut together an action scene because here the moving of from “left to right” demonstrates PROGRESSION as Anikin our hero in this case has to catch up to Subulba our villain who cheated and has the lead.
    You of all people who reviews and “analyzes” movies should know this and honestly feels like a cheep way to criticize what is arguable one of the two best scenes in this movie! The other being the fight with Qui Gon, Obi Wan vs Maul.
    Believe me I have no love for the Phantom Menace myself but out of all the pointless criticisms that people have had about this movie over the years, this is one of the biggest.

    • @45heisman
      @45heisman 4 роки тому +4

      That's for sure not the 180° rule. I understand on the surface thinking that but no that's not it when tracking a race like this you should have shot that rotate from on top of and pan to the right and than maybe the pod pulls away from camera. Or maybe you let the camera Track alongside the pod until it dissapear under a set of rocks. You don't need consistently set the camera in a single spot let the pod fly by it and track it like humans eyes watching race cars. A it's repetitive and B it's boring. The most boring part of actual race car races is that moment the fly by you because it's the moment your eyes can't really see what's going on like they can when the cars are further away and appear to be going slower(with the exception of the sound of the cars flying by which people love) watch well done racing movies and realize how often they are zoomed in and here's a pov than one from under the car than one from the infield and a couple sky views. This sequence is a mess of just constant cuts for a 3 second left to right watch the pods fly bye.

    • @45heisman
      @45heisman 4 роки тому +2

      To clarify the 180° rule is a rule of filming characters talking or fighting. As in always show the same side of their face during the scene to not confuse the audience and make them lose spacial awareness and their minds have to readjust to who is left to right over again. Where a scene like pod racing where there is no need to understand that spatial awareness because it's rapid scenery changing and the audience clearly identifies one thing in front of another thing is the flow of logic and just track which way the pods are going. The only way you could mess up the human brain in this scenario would be to have the pods coming towards the camera as in seeming like they have now turned around and driving the course in reverse. You could easily do a shot thst shows the left side of the pods and still be able to track the logical flow of the pods without breaking the 180° rule.

    I'm one of those rare people who watched the first six Star Wars movies in chronological narrative order, starting with The Phantom Menace, with absolutely NO idea about the plot going in. And I really liked the prequels! I found them much more mature, grounded, and complex than the originals. I remember being shocked to my CORE while watching Revenge of the Sith when I realized that the kindly, grandfatherly Senator Palpatine was the evil Sith Lord who had been causing so much chaos. The scenes between Anakin and Palpatine in Revenge of the Sith were GOLD . . . and that ending, with Anakin killing Mace Windu, and Palpatine issuing Order 66, and Obi-Wan trying to kill Anakin, and Anakin being burned to a crisp on Mustafar . . . it shocked me and horrified me and blew me away in the best way possible. Even the originals (which I watched after the prequels) didn't have that effect. They just seemed so simple and juvenile after all the dramatic intrigues and plot twists of the prequels. And God bless Ian McDiarmid for playing Palpatine so wonderfully . . . even as an unsophisticated 12-year-old, he was the BEST character in the prequels. Even Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan couldn't hold a candle to Ian's out-of-this-world performance.

      kingmatt2563 Sure he is. Well...Darth Maul with character development and dialog is. Darth Maul as shown in the film is lame...great fight...lame character (He has more dialog in the trailer than the actual film). He was fleshed out in Clone Wars cartoon and Rebels...he's actually quite a good character.
      If you watch Clone Wars...then RotS, the Grevious fight hold more weight too as he's giving a ton of development in the cartoon. So you're like, "finally, they take Grevious out" instead of, "who the hell is this guy?"
      Be it Maul or another Sith...I think if the villain got away in Episode 1, this would hold more weight when he is killed in episode 3...especially as Obi Wan finally kills the guy who killed his master...this is a thread that would loom over episode 2 and part of 3...that Obi Wan feels guilty about losing his master.

    • @kingmatt2563DABEST
      @kingmatt2563DABEST 8 років тому

      FACE The Prequels were centred around Anakins development not really Obi Wans. The first movie was about Obi Wan becoming an independent Jedi. But it shows him as loyal to the force and his master, hence why he kills Maul at the end. The film introduced us to the master, but the prequels are meant to be about the apprentice. Of course Obi Wan was one of the only well acted and scripted characters in the prequels.

    I find the politics to be quite interesting and intriguing even. The whole story of the PT is how Palpatine used politics to plunge everything into a state of war and chaos and then take control once the time was right. In TPM he created a crisis on Naboo to make the incumbent chancellor look weak then take his place once he kicks him out. In AOTC he influenced the Senate to approve the creation of the clones and started a war to distract the Jedi from his true plans. Then finally ROTS is where Palpatine makes his deadly move activating Order 66 making the clone troopers turn on the Jedi. It's brilliant honestly. I'm surprised that reviewers like Chris didn't catch that.

    I watched Episode I and loved it. I was 8 years old at the time. I loved the politics of it... That was meant to be one of the 2 main points of the film (beside introducing Anakin and dropping hints as to why he is a risk). What exactly was to be expected from a film that detailed the rise of the Emperor? And the complaint that there was no main character is just inane. Movies don't need 'a' main character; they can have many. That was one of the things I liked about the film. It gave such a balanced treatment to all of the central protagonists, and managed to keep the two Sith very mysterious. The film did a good job here, contrary to your lament.
    As for the complaint about the emotions all being the same, that should not be surprising for the Jedi characters, as calmness and a kind of detachment were parts of their training. Look at Luke throughout most of Episode VI. As soon as his Jedi training had basically completed, he became much more emotionally flat, and the Prequels captured this temperament well in their Jedi characters, who, unlike Luke, grew up being trained as Jedi, and so were likely to be even more composed and calm than him. As for other characters, what about Palpatine/Sidious? What about Padme? And the Trade Federation characters were not emotionally flat at all; not even sure what you're talking about there... They were constantly nervous, and only feigned calmness when they were negotiating, which again, was a very clever nuance, showing the importance of maintaining a facade in politics (something I noticed, even as an 8-year old, but which took me longer to fully appreciate). It showed that these cowards were paper tigers, who would fold at the first sign of trouble, and made them more interesting and easier to hate.
    Every time I watch a video criticising the Prequels, I always wonder if the critics really paid any attention. Some did, but many who criticise the Prequels talk a lot of nonsense about them. I found it odd that so many who hated on the Prequels claimed to love Episode VII, which truly was a loose film IMO, and which I didn't like at all. People really didn't give the Prequels (Episode I in particular) a fair shake.

His attempt to go fron Senator to Chancellor. I had just watched this recently and the Line that he tell the Queen "This is when Chancellor Valorum's strength with disapear" "Then they will elect a new Chancellor one that will not let this Tragedy continue" All of the actor's are unknown of what his actions are, everyone thinks he will do what is best for the Republic. If he would have actually been built out, instead of having two lines then getting murder in a ridiculous manner in his 4th time on screen, he had potential to be a lot more.
      He was shallow because he wasn't used. And still wasn't the most shallow. That comment is ridiculous. We don't know what his personality was like. He never got to show it because he didn't interact with anybody, and had only two lines of dialogue.

Revenge of the Sith had some great pacing and to this day I still enjoy watching McGregor and Christensen together in RoTS. I'm not huge on numeric scores but I'd give revenge a nice 7 out of 10, only brought down by Lucas's seeming insistence on making romance play a huge part in the story and some corny dialogue choices ("NOOOOOOOOOO"). No its not. You are trying to sound smart. The 180 degree rule has to do with actors talking in a scene and line of sight. Not a race scene. When you film actors talking and face each other. Look it up before you try to sound smart. literally google "film 180 degree rule" which im going to do for you. one sec. "180 degree Rule states that, if character A is looking right at B, then Character B will look to left side of A
      180 degree Rule is principally purposed to match the eyeline shot of two characters. ... Don’t Place your camera Above the Imaginary Line (See the Figure 4)."

    • @joethedrumma
      @joethedrumma 4 роки тому +4

      @@OSGondar Go to the Wikipedia article and look up examples, hold on, I'm going to do that for you, "Another example could be a car chase: If a vehicle leaves the right side of the frame in one shot, it should enter from the left side of the frame in the next shot. Leaving from the right and entering from the right creates a similar sense of disorientation as in the dialogue example." The 180 degree rule in film applies to simple things like planes facing the right side of the frame if they travel east. You're a fool if you think that the 180 degree rule only applies to dialogue. If you wanna sound smart, and do so by being a pretentious asshole, do your research properly, pal ;)

      Okay, just real quick, "like it's a difficult task", not "like a difficult task", as in, "try, that makes it sound difficult".
      It's not a difficult task because, aside from a certain segment that had overwhelmingly negative reactions, I and II were rated above average, and that's with Jar Jar etc. taken into account - so really, you can't throw a rock without hitting several of those things, as with any movie of that general qualitative level..

    I think the reason for the left-to-right view from the same angle of the pod race was to continually emphasize that we were watching a race on an established course and not a chase scene in the open desert. Maybe they went about it the wrong way but I'm pretty sure that's the reason they did it.

    While you do bring up fine points here and there, I don’t agree with a lot of what you say here. But that comes down to personal preference. The one thing I want to say to one of your points is about the podracing scene. You say the camera never flips to the other side and you have a problem with that. The reason the camera never goes to the other side is purely a filmmaking rule called the “180 Degree” rule. The camera, for the most part, should always stay on one side of the scene. If you flip to the other side of the 180 degree line, it becomes distorting and disjointed. You lose track of where things are in the space. That’s why it’s done the way it is and if you watch any racing movie or any movie in general, it’s done the same way.

    I think it all depends on how old you were in 1999, and how willing to get swept up in it all. I was 21 and got totally in to the video games, board games, snacks/ drinks/cereals promotions, toys, collectables. It was a great time. The movie was far from being a classic, but we had watched the trailer and Duel of the Fates countless times and it became something more than a movie. Ironically, I wish that someone would do a special edition of it, with improved CGI, better editing etc.

    P.S.
    One thing that I like about the Prequels is that the original movies don't do all that much is its focus on empathy and grief. In A New Hope, when Obwan Kenobi dies, Luke doesn't really feel that much for him afterwards, yeah he wishes he was still alive, but we never see it interrupt his life or anything like that. In Attack Of The Clones when Anakans mother dies he feels the suffering, the anger that makes him kill all of the (Tribe that enslaved his mother that I don't know the name of). Yes he did just kill an entire tribe, but even then you still want him to succeed and be ok, and you can understand his perspective.
