I like the camera angle in the ad better than one one you have now you have a great background, have that for future episodes if you possible and you want.
The history of the 7 deadly sins is quite complicated, and Re:Zero draws on both the modern and historical sins for its Witches and Archbishops.
Originally, when the concept was conceived by ascetic monks in Asia in the 4/5th century, there were 8 main evil thoughts, or temptations, that people were taught to identify and overcome. These were:
1. Gluttony
2. Lust (Specifically in regards to prostitution)
3. Greed
4. Depression/Sadness
5. Wrath
6. Acedia (in modern terms apathy as a result of lack of motivation)
7. Vanity (Boasting about one's deeds)
8. Pride (Over-estimation of your abilities)
Western Christianity adopted these concepts, and refined them over the next few centuries. Depression/Sadness was combined with Acedia into what is known as Sloth, and Vanity and Pride were combined into just Pride. Envy was added on to these later on.
Re:Zero uses all the deadly sins that have ever existed, rather than any specific list, so it adds back in Vanity (occasionally translated as Vainglory) and Depression (translated as Melancholy) in addition to the 7 we know of today.

You left out just one thing. What we saw here looked like she rewrote history using her ability. That's reminescent of what the church did to vanity as a sin. It seems like Re:zero not just draws inspiration from historical context, but also incorporates it into the plot directly.

she didn't erases him, she teleported him with her one of the most OP reality warping ability in this show. But then, she's just behind satella at most in terms of overall stats/abilities.

@@fili0938 That's an interesting perspective. Not how it comes across when reading the scene in the light novel. In the book, it reads like Pandora commanded the world to change, and the world changed. That what happened was an illusion because Pandora declared in hindsight that it was, not because it actually was. But then again, if it actually is just a trick, that would explain a lot. Pandora's power appears too OP at a glance to explain why she would even need Emilia to open the seal, so maybe she isn't actually changing reality in hindsight after all.

She is actually of the scariest characters in any anime Ive ever seen. She feels straight up eldritch. Just beyond mortal comprehension.
The contradiction between the nice sounding things she says and her messed up actions is outright creepy.

You're not supposed to know who Pandora is before now. You've met the seven witches representing the seven deadly sins, but historically there were more than seven sins. There was also Vanity (or Vainglory) and Melancholy. Pandora is the Witch of Vanity.
Also, I personally loved Betelgeuse in season 1. I mean I hated him, but he was a great villain. Learning his backstory just makes me appreciate him even more.
Yeah... they build him up to be hated then tear down your hatred in season 2 making you relate to his misfortune. Incredible writing.

Because he’s naturally allowed to do whatever, he feels entitled to everything, even without earning it. I really like how his Greed is explored through the idea of entitlement which is such a huge element of modern society.
Pandoras existence in the story is insane bc literally all of history as we know it could somehow be fabricated with her authority using the other witches as scapegoats. Also fun fact she has the same Japanese VA as Al from FMAB
Also I think you’re forgetting Re:Zero basically is a mystery anime many characters get introduced and things happen without any explanation until way later down the line it’s supposed to be confusing without the context but i guess this is your first experience with unfinished longer running stories. In terms of content this is still comparable to what season 1 was for AOT. Only in season 3 some things will unravel and questions will be asked or answers that you didn’t even think of yet

Personally flashbacks or origin stories are my favorite part about the characters in this show yo might know who the characters are right now but not what let them go become WHO they are that already kinda got in the way of episode 4 this season I’d just take the events for what they are and just appreciate what the story is showing you currently

You know what's funny, there are those hipster naysayers in the community who *SPOILERS*
*SPOILERS READ AT YOUR DISCRETION* are so against the Flugel Time Travel theory but cannot even fathom the entire story being Time Travel beating Narrative Omnipotence, and Observers vs Rebels, Tappei can just pull "F U" card and make it not about that but the hints are there. I have a theory that relates to the stars, astrology and tarot cards so if anyone asks I'll go a little more into detail.
Also animation and character differentiation is easier when they have only one outfit
I wonder if Betelgeuse saying Flugel-sama implies he was a teacher or sense I of his, in which case the flugel is Subaru theory could make sense, maybe an alternate version of him time traveled to train and give Betelgeuse the sloth factor to put in motion the events of the whole show
Or that is just Betelgeuse referring to him formally but either way the fact he knows him and seems to have been given the sloth witch factor by flugel is a very supportive argument

I don't understand what you didn't understand in the scene between Geuse and Regulus.
Geuse took something in the box that allowed him to use afterwards the Authority of Sloth, Unseen Hands, and took Regulus with but the hands are invisible.
I think he means he just doesn't understand the broader context of why this is happening in the first places, or why it's a big deal for him, which is information we mostly doing have yet. Even in the books, we still don't know who the fuck Pandora is, what the Seal... sealing, or why any of this is even happening.

The exact strengths of Regulus and Pandora are meant to be unknown but at this point the biggest thing you would know of Regulus the sin archbishop of Greed from the novels is that whenever he has been attacked whether here in the forest or against Rem “not only was he uninjured, but not a spec of dirt could be found on his bright white clothes” no matter how much he had fought or been thrown around. Pandora the witch of Vanity seems to have the ability to rewrite reality itself to an extent but we know very little other than the feats we’ve witnessed in this episode.

Originally there were 9 deadly sins not 7, but 2 were later abandoned and merged into other sins by the catholic church. In re-zero it appears those 2 other sins(Vainglory/Vanity and Acedia/Melancholy) also exist.
20:55 The witch of greed existed and died 400 years ago, these events are taking place 100 years ago. It definitely cannot be the witch of greed, or a young witch of greed. The Witch of Vanity is entirely new to the story. The greed sin archbishop is there though.

imo, vanity/pandora is an illusionist of the highest degree. i dont think regulus ever existed in that scene. pandora simply displled the illusion of his existence so he ceased to be, along with all the effects caused by regulus. she goes on to say that she wont undo betelgeus using the sloth witch factor. but i think its not that she _won't_ its rather, she cant....
her being an illusionist makes sense in every way in this season.

I really liked how Petelgeuse was written in the first Season. He was a great amnical, crazy villain, that between his moments of insanity showed cold and reading sanity, which made him outstandingly scary. I hated him for what he have done in the series, but i was fascinated by his great villain writing.

Yes, Petelgeuse is a spirit. Hence why he could possess Subaru in season 1, as Subaru has a high affinity for Spirits and had no contract with a spirit. Which are the conditions to do so.

The sage who is known to have helped seal the witch of envy is the great sage Shaula not Flugel.
Flugel was only revealed to have avtually been the one to do it in Arc 6.

@@IronDestinyBlaze depends This is technically the case for most characters in re-zero, but as early as arc 3 of Re-zero most people who had been paying attention assumed Flugal was the sage simply because of the story about a "sage, dragon and hero" sealing the witch and Flugal was the first sage we heard about when we saw his name carved in Flugal's tree in Japanese letters

Well, it's me again, like the guy you want behind you explaining things.
It really doesn't come out of nowhere to think that Puck could be Fortuna, they share their use of ice, their parental love for Emilia, the nickname etc...
But they can't be the same person because of the timeline of events.
You probably aren't aware but it was already discussed or implied before, but Betty is so close to Puck (the only being she is close to is him) because they are like "siblings", because they have the same maker or "mother" : Echidna. Plus, in the OVA, Frozen Bonds, we can see some dialogue between Puck and Echidna in a criptic way (that was the first "time" Echidna "appeared" in the credits in the anime). And Echidna is dead since 400 years, so she made Puck before that.
So, he already existed during the flashback which only takes place some 100 years before the present events.

You dont see it often now but you gotta love the whole 2 person invasion trope in anime. The one where you have the big op person taking the lead in the beginning only to find out the smaller person they are with is even more powerful. It really sets the pecking order since normally a guy like Regulus is typically untouchable yet Pandora touched him. One of the intimidating and impressive things about villains like this in Rezero is the fact that you cant even tell what their powers are just by looking which makes them seem unstoppable or something.
Even with regulus, you think his power is control of some super strong wind but then he goes and fixes his twisted neck like that lmao, we really have no way to know even his power

Some very important things to clarify about this episode again.
Pandora is the witch of vanity. No she was never mentioned in the anime up to this point so you are safe this time :D
Vanity and melancholy were originally 2 additional sins to the typical 7 we know of today. Over time they got cut out/merged to other sins.
Re zero still uses the "old" concept so we have a witch of vanity here
Some really really important details about her:
She gave Geuse his sloth title and even the absolute cocky regulus addresses her with Sama. So her status in the witches cult has to be off the charts.
Also about her powers. She did not simply make regulus "vanish" she rewrote history so he effectively is in his own mansion with his wife's and it's like he never even was there. So every single thing that would've happened because he was there got reverted. You see this by him cutting off geuses arm but after Pandora rewrote history the arm was back since regulus was never there to cut it off in the first place.
She somehow uses this to rewrite her own death aswell since we see her die multiple times in this episode but she always comes back.
This ability to rewrite existence basically makes her the most overpowered enemy in the show. This however has to have drawbacks. I would imagine if you had no drawbacks you would rewrite events so you don't even get killed to save you some pain.
She is also behind the seal and the key. If she was all powerful she would just wish the key to existence and don't bother with whatever she is currently doing
As for fortuna and puck. This is the reaction that basically everyone has. Remember the timeline tho.
The current events are roughly 100years in the past. We know from the frozen bonds that puck made a contract with echidna. Echidna is dead for 400years and puck said he was looking for Emilia for forever. How can fortuna be puck for 300years before this event happens while clearly being an elf here in the story? Something does not add up here. It's quite a big mystery so far.
Also notice that fortuna was really aggressive towards Pandora and she shouted apologise to my brother and his wife. So its safe to say that Pandora did something fucked up to Emilia's real parents.
When Geuse accepted the witch factor he said sorry to the person that entrusted it with him. His name was flugel. Remember this name? It was from the guy that planted that huge ass tree in season one many many years ago
Also really nice detail remember when Emilia killed Geuse in season one? After killing him she shed a tear and was surprised why she cried after killing him.
Knowing their backstory now it was most likely a subcontious reaction. She did not remember at the point but she basically killed someone that played a fatherly role to her in her childhood.
I absolutely love this detail going back knowing what we know now
And yes this is why we love Geuse.
19:00 Geus obtained the power of hidden hands which, as you will remember, only he can see, that is why it looks as if Córneas were floating through the air but it was Geus who took it and threw it

Marketing. If you keep one design, it's easier for fans to bond with that character, to recognize it more. Also, because having one design makes it easier to sell different products. Because they all follow the same design.

For the record, we have never seen Corneas ever attack someone when it wasnt self defence, he honestly does not like fighting, but everyone is just a dick to him. Most dont even give him the pleasure or honor of an introduction and attack him while he is talking. All problems regarding him thus far can be solved by simply being polite and not interrupting or attacking him.
7:37 Funnily enough, Gintama poke fun at this "trope" in anime. In Gintama, the reason why the characters wear the same clothes since they bought dozens of similar clothes. 😂
All ill say are these are 7 more 28 minute episodes with VERY few openings and endings, you dont have to worry when it comes to fitting everything in for the rest of the season. Thats over 3 hours straight of content, longer than most long movies lol

Also, that's can't be a young witch of greed who is Echidna. She died 400 years ago while Emilia's flashback takes place only 100+ years ago.
Fortuna attacked her and screamed her name : Pandora, and she described herself as the Witch of Vanity.
In the world of Re:Zero, it seems there are 9 Sins, the 7 Christian ones you already know and 2 more that are more historical, Vanity here is Pandora and you'll see the last sin very soon.
A bit of Info to contextualize the encounter: What Betelgeuse meant by Church, you have to understand that 100 years ago there were factions inside the witch cult. Betelgeuse was a member of the moderates, whereas Pandora, Regulus and the other Archbishops were members of the radical faction. In the 100 years since then, the radicals eliminated the moderates. So the only remaining faction were the ruthless radicals that we saw in the Anime.

Betelgeuse is a bro, what you saw in this episode was him taking in the sloth witch factor, which he wasn't compatible with so using it causes him great pain. Also yes, he is a spirit. It's why he was able to jump bodies to his Fingers and Subaru back in s1.
Re:zero is one of those mystery stories that you don't see much around, that's why it's so incredible and keeps you hooked. There are so many things you want to discover and more you want to know about these characters and names that are thrown in your face, the history and information of some haven't even been revealed or shown until today in the light novel. Tappei the writer, for me he's a fucking genius, everything he created in this universe, the whole story is connected but at the same time we don't know much, it's so bizarre and so good at the same time, is hard to explain lol

You're familiar with the Seven Deadly Sins (pride, greed, sloth, wrath, lust, gluttony, and envy), but there actually used to be nine. Vainglory used to be one of the deadly sins, but it was eventually rolled into pride.
This episode really hurts my soul every time I see it. We have seen some gruesome moments for Subaru, but the amount of traumatic events in such a small time that Emilia goes thru really makes you understand why she felt the way she felt after going through that trial. And at such a young age basically losing two people who would be considered parental figures to her. Just want to give her a hug. 😭As well not to leave out Geuse because seeing what he went thru is also really sad too. I am not sure I should be excited for the next part or not, but I can tell it is not going to be a happy one.

Regarding the relationship between Emilia and Mother Fortuna, I think cause Fortuna is basically the one raising Emilia, they're more like mom and child than aunt and child. Emilia saying Mother Fortuna is her real mom and Fortuna saying Emilia is her daughter probably means that.
We're close to the end of Emilia's backstory and there's also Ryuzu's backstory as well. I love the ReZero backstories especially of characters who are shown to be bad or suspicious at first. You'd hate them or dislike them and then suddenly tragic backstory and you'd feel conflicted.
Haha the feeling you have knowing the outcome due to it being a backstory is opposite of mine. I've watched a lot of anime wherein the prequels/backstory arcs are about how certain characters die and how things end up the way they are and even though I know the characters won't make it, I still get attached enough that it hurts to see it finally happen.

Yeah, mainly because the other 7 witches are either dead or sealed. Which means they are mostly out of the current events. Having some seemingly omnipotent being still roaming around is terrifying. Pandora can literally show up right in Subaru's face, whenever she's compeled to do so.
Pandora is the Witch of Vanity (sometimes translated as Witch of Vainglory) and we have never been introduced to her before, she is 100% new to us here. We thought there were only 7 witches for 7 sins, yet here she is being far above regulus
Vanity seems to be like an extreme form of Pride, overly praising yourself above everyone else as if you were a god, which is strange cause pride is obviously already a Witch (though no archbishop as far as we know), so its very confusing if theres any relation to the pride sin or if shes just something else

Pandora can't be "young Echidna" Because this is happening around 100 years ago and earlier in the episode, You saw four hundred years ago with living Echidna, Rozwaal, Betty and Ryuzu Meyer.
Pandora clearly has "zero fu€ks given" about anything, and seems to be complicit in whatever happened to Emilia's blood parents (Fortuna's brother and his wife).
Ok, short summary (i hope)...
Furtuna, emilia's Aunt / mother because she actually was the one to raise her... Sister to Emilia's father... sister in law of emilia's mother... The father was the elf with silver hair... therefore since emilia is a half elf... Emilia's mother was therefore a human who did not have silver hair... They are gone for some reason and emilia was left to fortuna to raise... Emilia is important as seen from Petelgeuse's reaction to seeing her...
Pandora witch of Vanity... the 8th witch seen so far... in echidnas subspace we met the 7 "deadly sins" witches... including the witch of envy... who is Satella... so no you have not heard Pandora's name previous to this... Also remember Emilia not an actual witch, though she said that herself she was just bluffing the people from the snow town to protect them and she was just speaking up to echidna to stand tall, not that emilia is an actual witch... at least from what the conversations have been about, maybe emilia will become a witch or something, who knows in the futura, but she is not one right now... emilia has just been trying to scare people by saying the witch word...
Pandora brings along the Regulus corneas Archbishop of Greed (the one with him who ate rem was the Gluttony Bishop Lye Batenkaitos)... Petelgeusse is the Archbishop of Sloth and he is a spirit... meaning not human... in this episode we see him "consume" the "witch factor of sloth" which was contained in the box which he says he has been keeping for a while knowing he was not fit for it... and he apologizes to FLEUGEL for using it... Flugel is the sage guy who planted the tree used to kill the whale... the one who lived LONG LONG ago... and considering Petelgeuse is a spirit who probably has lived quite long since he considers Fortuna a kid and she is a long lived elf too... Petelgeusse now starts using the power given to him by the sloth factor, the invisible hands... Witch factor which now subaru has and used to defeat Garfiel with an invisible punch to the jaw and subaru names "invisible providence" instead of the "unseen hand" petelgeusse used to call... Subaru's power though is a bit more stable since echidna used her "bodily fluids" to help stabilize as she herself told subaru... Regulus corneas "witch factor" is now fighting off Petelgeusse invisible hand without even trying... we do not know what his power is though...
Pandora has some sort of power that seems to be related to her words, what she has said just becomes reality it seems... she said Regulus is gone and he was gone... she said Petelgeuse's hand had been restored and it was. How does that work? who knows but also .... she was killed a couple of times but she just canbe back...like nothing even happened... Also archie who was entrusted to protect emliia with his life went and died trying to protect her... Killed by the Black serpent... the third Mabeast created my the witch of gluttony...Not to be confused with the 4 Great Spirits... puck is one of the 4 great spirits and he is CALLED the beast of the end... which just so happens to be similar to the 3 Mabeasts which are calamities...
Back in the sanctuary flash back... Echidna creates the sactuary, and goes there as Betty's mother... thought not biological... since Betty is a spirit and echidna is not... Meaning the mother daughter relationship is a bit more lax though echidna is ok with that...Also the roswall (middlename fogotten) matters of a few generations ago (aka roswall's grand grand grand something) is introduced and meets echidna and betty... At this point betty is considered a kid by echida, and so is the now child looking grandma clone's original...
I loved to hate betelguese before that episode, i totally understood him after watching next episode (also Betty saying poor geuse).

what Pandora does in this episode is crazy, she makes Regulus Corneas disappear (changing reality he never came here) causing the battle to never happen (environmental destruction and Betelgeuse wound Not available).
Her power makes me think of a scary hypothesis, that everything we know from the beginning of the movie until now is actually written by Pandora (the world's past, the history of witches,...) and what if If it has a purpose, this will be the best plot twist in the anime world

Echidna is the Witch of Greed.. she had the Greed Witch Factor before Regulus.. who´s now the Sin Archbishop of Greed.. Geuse absorbed the Sloth Witch Factor and got the title Sin Archbishop of Sloth.. he´s also incompatible with it.. and he´s a spirit, which is why he lives so long.
Roswall is human.. he only has a human life span. The 7 witches we know of and met in the grave died 400 years ago (aside from the Witch of Envy who got sealed), so Ryuzu´s past is 400 years ago. Emilias is 100 years ago.. she told us she was frozen for a hundred years. In any case it has to be after Echidna died, since Regulus has the Witch Factor.
You can infer from the OVA that Pucks reason for existing is Emilia.. he made an agreement/contract beforehand.. BUT Puck is at least 400 years old.. in season one he very heavily implied he knew Satella and I´m pretty sure it´s been mentioned directly how old he is. Puck can´t be Fortuna. Unless time shenanigans.
Petelgeuse is also more than 400 years old.. Betty knew him, and we know she´s been stuck in the library ever since Echidna died. He also knew Flugel (remember the big ass tree from season one?).. so Puck is more like Geuse.. somehow knowing/being devoted to Emilia long before she´s born.
Honestly.. there´s no indication, but the way Geuse and Fortuna speak makes it seem, that whatever happened to Emilias parents, happened a long long time ago.. Emilias age doesn´t add up. Pandora definitely had her hand in it..

Pandora is legitimately terrifying. She has this constant calmness to her that is so off putting. Not once does she show any emotion, which really makes her terrifying.
