Subaru is SUCH a good MC, his speech will always remain as one of my favorite moments in anime history. It's not an epic battle or a badass MC moment, it's just an incredibly raw confession that it's so viscerally human anyone could find themselves empathizing with his words to some degree. I know a lot of people who do relate, people with depression and other mental struggles that find Subaru and Re:Zero therapeutic and helpful. Ultimately, Re:Zero is the story of a boy filled with self loathing who has to overcome painful endeavour after painful endeavour while learning how to love and accept himself despite his shortcomings. It's a humane tale mixed with fantasy. Throwing all of that message and character development away just because Subaru rejected Rem in that particular scene seems like such a waste and I think people would benefit from revaluating their perspectives. Rem is the happiest at seeing Subaru regain his determination to save Emilia, even if the rejection stings. I can understand the personal feelings that makes you recoil at Subaru's bluntness, after all Rem is my favorite character, but throughout the series it is made clear how much Subaru loves and appreciates Rem in return. She occupies a different place in his heart than Emilia. Here, the most significant rejection came from Rem when she refused to run away with Subaru, as he was prepared to leave Emilia and everyone behind and dedicate himself to Rem instead. So, Subaru understanding that what Rem wants out of him is not for him to run away with her despite how much she'd love that, but for him to stay true to himself, to fight his battles and not give up on his goal to save Emilia, he declares just that. He declares, acknowledging her selfless love, that he'll be a hero she can be proud of. And yes, invalidating Subaru's dedication to Emilia and reducing it to "simp" or saying it "came out of nowhere" is a perspective I can't agree with either. He loves Emilia first because she was there for him first, healing him, caring for him, soothing his pain (like guys, I'm a Rem girly first and foremost but even I can see why Subaru fell in love with the one beautiful girl who helped him and made him happy). Subaru did selfishly put her in a pedestal, creating an ideal version of Emilia in his head and disregarding her flaws, but this is something that is addressed and expanded upon in the story itself. The evolution of their relationship in season 2 is so compelling. Anyway, I digress. Re:Zero just makes me really argumentative. Though I think the novels make a better job at showing how deep Subaru's love for Rem runs, which is natural since we can read his thoughts, the anime manages well enough that I didn't think people would put it in question. He literally chose Rem over Emilia for a moment in his most vulnerable in this episode and I think the way Rem responded to his feelings says so many things about the kind of bond they share. It reminded of a certain Witch of Lust scene that clarified Subaru's perspective regarding Rem's role in his life, which if you know you know cuz this comment is turning out too long. Re Zero is funny af because it tricks people into thinking its another action packed isekai with an MC that gets stronger but its not. Its almost like a psychological thriller with some action bits. This episode filters people out. I know when someone gets super fucking angry at the end of the episode that they don’t understand whats going on here. At least the skinny dude at the bottom, while hating it, does understand what its going for. Most people just see a confession and think it needs go a certain way
this is so nostaglic man. one of the greatest episodes in all of fiction that episode 7,15, and 18 whammy was what cemented Rezero as possibly my favorite anime of all time despite all the grief and suffering theres so much love and beauty in the story. this show is amazing.

Instead, they get a grounded main character with serious flaws who is quite blatantly supposed to be more of a real person than an anime character and all they can seem to focus on is how much they can't respect him for being that real. People enjoy Re:Zero because Subaru isn't some unflappable MC who remains unrealistically confident in himself after experiencing multiple traumatic situations, including multiple grisly deaths, and being powerless to stop it. Subaru is supposed to be a deconstruction of the standard Shounen protagonist. He's supposed to be a lazy, useless guy who was thrown into a fantasy world "for real" and doesn't get to live the Isekai protagonist's dream.
To be honest, when I saw this anime when it aired, I really disliked Subaru. So it's understandable that these reactors would be disappointed or angry with Subaru. However, while most manga and anime characters are insensitive to death and pain, in this work it is portrayed as a real-life fear. Since I realized that, I love and respect Subaru for experiencing it over and over again and finally overcoming it.
Miss in the top left corner was literally swearing at Rem in episodes 7 and 8(I know most people were don't @ me). It's just funny to see the different reactions when they realize is one of the top girls in the anime. Now it's suddenly, "Why would you pick Emilia!?" Despite Emilia being on his side from day 1.

This episode really goes to show how much the people understand the story of Re:Zero, and the man named Natsuki Subaru. They say they feel bad for Rem but it is Rem that is making Subaru understand and embrace himself, to stay true to himself. All the while never even denying what the awful things He said about himself, and adding the things that are good about Him. They are the ones that are being the most disrespectful to *both* Rem AND Subaru. This series is full of moments like this that filter people out, even in later arcs that haven’t been animated yet And I love it for being like this. If it pisses people off and if they don’t watch it or hate the character for being true to himself, well you won’t be missed thankyouverymuch! Re:Zero should serve as a litmus test for media comprehension skills, and genuine human empathy. I learn so much about a person and how their brain works based on how they react to both the plot and Subaru as a character. The two dudes on the bottom right, very clearly do NOT GET IT. The thing to understand about Re: Zero is that it is not a story meant for those who view themselves as triumphant. It is a horror story meant to prey on the feelings of the less triumphant. People who have been outcasted, who have been bullied, who have flunked out of school, who don't have very many friends, who aren't good at being social, gamers, otaku, and more specifically Hikikomori. People who for one reason or another have been made to feel like they don't fit in. People who feel like failures. People who are likely to be fans of Isekai! That isn't to say that you must be one of those things to enjoy Re: zero. Plenty of people who do not view themselves as losers like this show and can empathize with Subaru just fine. But it helps to see a little bit of yourself in Subaru, as you're supposed to, and it's supposed to make you a little uncomfortable. I'm willing to wager that the dudes on the bottom right are way too shonen-pilled. They don't see themselves in Subaru. They likely identify more with someone like Naruto. A character who doesn't give up, and always gets stronger. Because of that, Subaru and his perceived worthlessness is just something they find irritating. They are probably incapable of identifying with a story like this because their idea of good escapism is to watch a guy learn how to make everyone and everything his bitch like a standard power fantasy. Meanwhile, every other reactor is reacting like a normal human being. With empathy, and an understanding of Subaru's absolutely fucked circumstances. They may be a little frustrated with Subaru, not wanting Subaru to make terrible decisions, and they call him out when he's being horrible, but they never outright berate him for being a "bad character" like the other two dudes do.
I remember watchingn the whole Season 1 of Re;Zero when I was 13. I experienced a lot of emotional, mental and some physical abuse too. As well as seeing my mom getting abused by step-dad as well. That in turned made me into a guy that cries easily and is pretty emotional. And that naturally made me more deeply connected to emotional moments and the Re;zero ride was a rollercoaster for someone like me. After finishing Episode 15, I was pretty much shellshocked and actually felt the hopelessness and visceral circumstance that Subaru was in. After Episode 18, I didn't even get mad when Subaru said he loved Emilia. I didnt resent him at all and loved his character even more. But, yeah. It was weird to see people's reactions to 15 or 18, being bored or whatnot. It was pretty disheartening. I literally felt heartbroken when my now 13 year old brother watvhed Re;Zero and was just either bored or disinterested during the moments where I was genuinely feeling Subaru. I remember feeling so sick and anxious after Episode 15 while my sibling just brushed it off casually. The duality of man. Its sad but not everyone's gonna have the same reaction because of past experiences. The funny thing though is my si ling was also abused emotionally, mentally and physically but I guess he just copes with it differently. And thats why I agree with your comment. Time and time again, I come back to see the reactions again and again tot he same scenes in Re;Zero and still shed a tear when watchinb Subaru's suffering. It affected me that much. Thank you! It’s not as though Subaru feels nothing towards Rem, but he’s not going to lie to her either. Emilia was and still is the person Subaru is in love with. Rem’s confession did have an impact on him so Subaru never actually said that he does not love her because that too would be a lie. Rem knows that the Subaru she loves is the one that’s in love with Emilia, but she still wants to be someone important to Subaru(and possibly share him with Emilia(at least that’s what I remember someone who read the LNs suggest) which is not that out of place in Re Zero).

But I don't think it's a bad decision to reject her here it's best for both of them and rem needs to let go off this obsession she has. Re Zero is funny af because it tricks people into thinking its another action packed isekai with an MC that gets stronger but its not. Its almost like a psychological thriller with some action bits.
This episode filters people out. I know when someone gets super fucking angry at the end of the episode that they don’t understand whats going on here. At least the skinny dude at the bottom, while hating it, does understand what its going for. Most people just see a confession and think it needs go a certain way

I really want to ask both of them what they honestly expected him to do.

People enjoy Re:Zero because Subaru isn't some unflappable MC who remains unrealistically confident in himself after experiencing multiple traumatic situations, including multiple grisly deaths, and being powerless to stop it. Subaru is supposed to be a deconstruction of the standard Shounen protagonist. He's supposed to be a lazy, useless guy who was thrown into a fantasy world "for real" and doesn't get to live the Isekai protagonist's dream.

To be honest, when I saw this anime when it aired, I really disliked Subaru. So it's understandable that these reactors would be disappointed or angry with Subaru. However, while most manga and anime characters are insensitive to death and pain, in this work it is portrayed as a real-life fear. Since I realized that, I love and respect Subaru for experiencing it over and over again and finally overcoming it.

This episode really goes to show how much the people understand the story of Re:Zero, and the man named Natsuki Subaru. They say they feel bad for Rem but it is Rem that is making Subaru understand and embrace himself, to stay true to himself. All the while never even denying what the awful things He said about himself, and adding the things that are good about Him. They are the ones that are being the most disrespectful to *both* Rem AND Subaru.
This series is full of moments like this that filter people out, even in later arcs that haven’t been animated yet And I love it for being like this. If it pisses people off and if they don’t watch it or hate the character for being true to himself, well you won’t be missed thankyouverymuch!

Re:Zero should serve as a litmus test for media comprehension skills, and genuine human empathy. I learn so much about a person and how their brain works based on how they react to both the plot and Subaru as a character. The two dudes on the bottom right, very clearly do NOT GET IT.
The thing to understand about Re: Zero is that it is not a story meant for those who view themselves as triumphant. It is a horror story meant to prey on the feelings of the less triumphant. People who have been outcasted, who have been bullied, who have flunked out of school, who don't have very many friends, who aren't good at being social, gamers, otaku, and more specifically Hikikomori. People who for one reason or another have been made to feel like they don't fit in. People who feel like failures. People who are likely to be fans of Isekai!
That isn't to say that you must be one of those things to enjoy Re: zero. Plenty of people who do not view themselves as losers like this show and can empathize with Subaru just fine. But it helps to see a little bit of yourself in Subaru, as you're supposed to, and it's supposed to make you a little uncomfortable. I'm willing to wager that the dudes on the bottom right are way too shonen-pilled. They don't see themselves in Subaru. They likely identify more with someone like Naruto. A character who doesn't give up, and always gets stronger. Because of that, Subaru and his perceived worthlessness is just something they find irritating. They are probably incapable of identifying with a story like this because their idea of good escapism is to watch a guy learn how to make everyone and everything his bitch like a standard power fantasy. Meanwhile, every other reactor is reacting like a normal human being. With empathy, and an understanding of Subaru's absolutely fucked circumstances. They may be a little frustrated with Subaru, not wanting Subaru to make terrible decisions, and they call him out when he's being horrible, but they never outright berate him for being a "bad character" like the other two dudes do.
I remember watchingn the whole Season 1 of Re;Zero when I was 13. I experienced a lot of emotional, mental and some physical abuse too. As well as seeing my mom getting abused by step-dad as well. That in turned made me into a guy that cries easily and is pretty emotional. And that naturally made me more deeply connected to emotional moments and the Re;zero ride was a rollercoaster for someone like me. After finishing Episode 15, I was pretty much shellshocked and actually felt the hopelessness and visceral circumstance that Subaru was in. After Episode 18, I didn't even get mad when Subaru said he loved Emilia. I didnt resent him at all and loved his character even more. But, yeah. It was weird to see people's reactions to 15 or 18, being bored or whatnot. It was pretty disheartening. I literally felt heartbroken when my now 13 year old brother watvhed Re;Zero and was just either bored or disinterested during the moments where I was genuinely feeling Subaru. I remember feeling so sick and anxious after Episode 15 while my sibling just brushed it off casually. The duality of man. Its sad but not everyone's gonna have the same reaction because of past experiences. The funny thing though is my si ling was also abused emotionally, mentally and physically but I guess he just copes with it differently. And thats why I agree with your comment. Time and time again, I come back to see the reactions again and again tot he same scenes in Re;Zero and still shed a tear when watchinb Subaru's suffering. It affected me that much. But thanks for your comment, it made me reminisce and remember my first time experience with the anime.

Those two at the bottom think every anime is a Shouen with the protag being someone with unreal potential or starts of as some demi-god in the verse. He is a normal guy who got sent to a strange world and remained a normal guy who just happens to be able to restart time. They think he should grow into Reinhard 2.0 cuz he is the mc. I actually went to their channel and watched bunch of their reactions on Rezero but they never acknowledge the fact that Subaru had to go through many deaths and torment to be in current state. They never acknowlege this, even during their reaction of s1 ep18, or s2 ep4, they never realize the pain and growth Subaru has experienced as a person. They're just rambling about how Subaru is shitty and is the worst character in anime history while he is dealing with PTSD because of so many deaths he had seen and experienced. And they go on and on about how Rezero is cheesy with its storytelling because Garfiel goes along with Subaru well after the confrontation in s2 ep16.

I love rem. I do but it is good she got rejected here. She needs development mentally and needs to gain some self love while letting go of her tendency to get obsessed and put people on pedestal readily devaluing herself in the process. My complaint about rem is the fact she need to have self love. She put ram and Subaru on a pedestal and willing to kill her emotions to recklessly fight with her life on the line as was the case with her memory. No doubt she was scared but she just can't catch a break. Emilia is definitely amazing too in fact she is too good for the world nobody should curse Subaru for his choice. People talk about how bad of a person Subaru is but he's probably one of the most realistic main characters ever. He's 17 years old. What were you thinking and how were you acting at that age? I think their hatred isn't directed at Subaru per se, but rather the unfairness Rem experiences. He instantly loves Emilia, obsessively, without her doing anything meaningful for him, while Rem is willing to sacrifice her life for him, and he doesn't even consider accepting her feelings. It's understandable.

Thank you! It’s not as though Subaru feels nothing towards Rem, but he’s not going to lie to her either. Emilia was and still is the person Subaru is in love with.
Rem’s confession did have an impact on him so Subaru never actually said that he does not love her because that too would be a lie. Rem knows that the Subaru she loves is the one that’s in love with Emilia, but she still wants to be someone important to Subaru(and possibly share him with Emilia(at least that’s what I remember someone who read the LNs suggest) which is not that out of place in Re Zero).
The two brothers at the bottom right should just stick to shonen, Re:Zero seems to be far too complex for them to comprehend.

That's not a valid reason to hate rem though she never knew him and by her backstory it's understandable why she would want to kill people involved with the witch. But I don't think it's a bad decision to reject her here it's best for both of them and rem needs to let go off this obsession she has. First it was ram and now it's ram+ subaru and she puts them both above herself and will act recklessly for their sake not valuing her self and own feelings in the process. Wether she is scared or out matched as was the case with regulus and gluttony she will still act recklessly as a result her character never really developed mentally.
