  • i heard it's good to practice lines and basic shapes when starting out, so i did... for 30 days straight. it's chapter 2 of DIY art school, folks!
(and in case the title isn't sarcastic enough, im only on a self-taught artistic journey far from knowing what the "right" way to do things is, if there even is any. this is just a documentation of my creative experiment 😬)

As an artist, I always recommend doing exercises like this to other artists, especially if they're beginners. It's also always something you can fall back on and do when you're feeling stressed or just need a bit of art therapy. Never underestimate the power of simplicity! ❤

I’m currently at the same point as you. At 36, I suddenly realized that I absolutely love art. It fascinates me, has improved the way I see the world, and deeply relaxes me. But here’s the big “but”… I’m really not good at it at all. I’ve never had any connection to art and don’t know anyone in my environment who’s into it either.
At the moment, I’m learning in a chaotic way-through videos, courses, occasional visits to an art school, and books. I’m experimenting with different styles, explanations, and materials. After watching your video, I’m now considering setting up a 30-day challenge for myself in February, focusing only on basic forms. I’ve noticed many times that my linework is too shaky.
Thank you for the inspiration and best of luck on your journey!

A suggestion, some people really need a thing to focus on creating or they lose interest (me) what I think is the best fine motor practice is drawing snowflakes. Your snowflake can look like anything, and can be composed of any combination of elements you're trying to focus on that day. Straight lines? Sure. Circles within circles? You got it! A small blizzard trying to make each one have swooshy sideway look? Why not! With snowflakes you have A Thing to draw, but one that leaves you mostly just focusing on mastering components of art, basics without being basic.

What a great video! Thanks for your excellent thoughts. I’ve been on a similar journey over the last couple of years. I’ve been an abstract artist for a long time, and I used to think I was drawing-impaired. I said all the time, “I can’t draw.” And used that as an excuse for why I only painted abstracts. Then I had the epiphany that I can’t draw because I’ve never learned how to draw. So, I decided to learn. Like you, I started with basic shapes, and over time, had the beautiful realization that a lot of drawing is just learning how to combine the basic shapes in increasingly complex ways. And now, suddenly (after two years of hard work and tons of practice), I’m now a draw-er. I’ll still always do abstract art because that’s what I’m drawn to (haha), but now I do it because I love it, not because I feel like I don’t have other choices. And I’ve come to find deep joy in drawing - in fact it’s take over my life.
At any rate, you did an amazing job in this video - excellent, helpful insights, and great production value. You have a lovely UA-cam presence. I’ve subscribed, and I look forward to watching more of your videos. Are you also on Instagram, by chance?

    I'm going through same.
Realising drawing is not boring. We are.
Realising it's not hard to improve, it's just costs what it's worth.
Realising UA-cam has people who have things to show others and some who simply want to be seen. And a bit of both.
Realising learning art and learning doodling are actually two different things. And if doodling beautifully can be a lovely skill, learning art is a torturous and a lot more rewarding skill of learning about self and what one is made of, really.
And it's all just the beginning. Imagine what's next.

You popped up on my feed for the first time (thank you Algorithms), and I am so pleased to have found this video, along with your channel. Such an unusual way of putting across the benefits and absolute need to practice in such a way that totally made sense. I am a beginner to sketching, but less so to watercolour. I found this immensely helpful and will use your recommended studies to mirror your own feeling of success, and more importantly, the feeling you got that finally allowed it all to click into place. You have a new subscriber from Scotland. Many thanks for taking the time and trouble to get this video out there! 👩🏻‍🎨🖌️🎨👍🏻

I give three kinds of recommendations regarding hand-eye coordination exercises:
    1. Follow a master giving a drawing demo on video. Pick something unedited with a clear view of their hand, slow it down to 0.25x and copy their motions instead of the drawing they're making. If you end up making the drawing you are doing very well, but if not, you can repeat it another day. There's a lot of things learned in doing what their hand does that they cannot communicate in a lecture.
    2. Work with stencils to set down a guide to follow. Then try to match the guide freehand. This trains you to try for more and more precision instead of making a sorta-circle and thinking "well that's good enough". That's one of the pitfalls I often see when doing freehand exercises.
    3. Practice with reference using blind contour drawing. Blind contour often comes up in classes, and it builds on the previous two things by challenging you to match the outline of what you see with the motion you're making. If you are able to write letters without looking down at your pen, that's roughly the kind of ability you're trying to train - instead of flicking your eyes back and forth between your paper and the image, the eyes stay locked in one place while the pen moves. This is a very good way to practice proportioning skills as well as mark-making.
Finding reference you enjoy is a large part of the game after you start doing things with blind contour. I like going to Internet Archive and sampling from old magazines and books. I actually screenshot those to build picture collages. More recently I have moved towards still lifes using toys. Still life drawing adds more complexity over photos since the proportions you see shift around as you move your head.

Hey! I just wanted to thank you for the incredible video! I'm not a complete beginner artist, but I haven't actually practiced drawing in a year and a half. I used to take art classes but had to move across my city, so I couldn't attend those anymore. Lately, I have been missing doing art and decided to (re)learn everything from the basics, but since I am on my own now, I didn't really know where to start. This video was recommended to me and I'm so glad I clicked on it! I'll absolutely try this challenge

I'm a graphic designing student and the only reason i got in the program is because they had drawing classes but so far only things i did just copy the pictures our teacher shows us and even that is extremely hard i have to start at least 2-3 times to get the drawing right. It was really fun in the beginning where all we did was just cubes and Perspective than all of a sudden we switched to vases and fruits and shades which went horrible for me. While watching the video you said something like how it feels meditative and thats how i felt about the beginning part too and i realized the reason i felt like that is because that was not hard. And we went too quickly and i didn't study lines and Perspective everyday so when we got to the vases and fruits and shades... Well everything went horribly cause my fundamentals were not proper. So we are in break for a months and i was looking at anatomy actually (cause i got really sick of those vases and fruits) but i couldn’t figure out where to start. Starting immediatly from the whole body sound really scary and impossible. And thank god youtube showed me this. I'm gonna be doing this for the next month hopefully and i believe it's gonna help me a lot before the next semester. Even if doesn't, if i can manage doing it everyday it at least gonna get me the habit of taking a pen in my hand everyday 🤞

Nice video! I went through Alphonso Dunn's "Pen and Ink Drawing Workbook," and it was worth every cent and every second I spent on it! I learned SO MUCH about self-discipline and practice - skills you need to have. I also spent a couple of weeks with a big sketchbook JUST drawing multi-colored overlapping circles on each page. It was so zen. I loved it and got so good at controlling my accuracy. I've started a couple of other drawing books, but haven't finished them - "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" and "Beginning Drawing Atelier." Both great books! Have fun! :)

I used to do those exercises as a warm up before drawing sessions every day, and at first it really helped me to get into drawing/working mood, but then it was kind of hard to draw something more complex cause I new that I can be drawing comfortable for me lines and circles and still improving in some way. Sounds kinda stupid but I guess that just how my brain works, not wanting to work in full capacity when there is an easier way to do things. Anyway your video inspired me to start doing those warm ups again and not letting my mind trick me.

this is the best way to start hating art right away imo! if it's good for you, it's good, go ahead, but don't make yourself burn out forcing yourself through silly mechanical things like that everyday, either... these are fun and good as a warm-up, but art is a means to express what touches your soul, and it's easy to lose sight of it while pushing through solely technical, rote practice
a good way to combine the two and improve fast is honestly to draw from observation instead? it'll force you to draw all the straight lines and parallels and curves and ellipses anyway, teach you observational skills, how to represent volumes and perspective organically, and it's a lot more varied and satisfying! your line quality will improve naturally if you focus on making it good, no matter what the exercises you do anyway

Although I am not "doing" much visual art these days, when I was at art school back in the 80s I started to draw with my left (other) hand and found it was actually no different for me (at the time). I also taught myself to write with my left hand and to write backwards like Leonardo Davinci.

Try Molly Lemon’s reductive printing with an Open Press Project 3D-mini printer? That would be very cool. 💕

thank you and likewise! ❤️ for documenting i suggest just setting up your camera and forgetting about it, watching it back was always fun and it looked like i knew what i was doing even though i didn't lol and then you have a lot of footage to play around with later!

Had to go listen to another video, to see if my ears are being weird....or if there actually was something with the soundquality in this video.
Correct me if I am mistaken, but I think the sound levels (left-right) are a bit off... it kinda wobbles from left to right in my ears o_o maybe check the mic settings?
Other than that, the content of the video is really nice and the editing style is quite engaging!
