Did Borg ever look off balance on a tennis court? He moved so effortlessly and almost nonchalantly it's unreal. He had the speed of a sprinter but always looked serenely unhurried.
The Right Hand against the Mancino, the Defender against the Attacker, The Swedish Ice against the American Fire, The Machine against the Genius Madness, The Civilization against the Ghetto. In short: An Epic and Timeless Rivalry.
When Borg won his first French Open in 1974, Fred Perry was asked after thematch if Borg could ever win at Wimbledon to which he replied, 'Certainly'. He knew that Borg had been brought up playing on the fast Swedish indoor courts and had learned the proper footwork to anticipate and move properly around a court, so that combined with his natural speed he would be able to get away with not serving and volleying much. A very shrewd judge and prediction.
Watching this video, you can really see why white tennis balls went the way of the dinosaur. Even with this amazing HQ footage it's hard to track the ball if it gets near any of the lines.
The incredible thing about this entire match is despite the hype, the importance of the match and the tension, both players play to the absolute outer realms of their talents. Many finals can be disappointing but these two just could not and would not give up. How Borg got over losing 7 match points and being 0-30 down on his serve in game 1 of the 5th, then not to lose a point on his serve, is still beyond me.

This was a unique, incredible, legendary and unrepeatable page of this sport. I was lucky enough to have experienced it live: a fascinating show, full of emotions and simply unparalleled. Over the years there have been several champions, perhaps even stronger than these two myths, but no one has ever managed to produce the same emotions, the same incomparable atmosphere that Borg, the Swedish bear, and Mc Enroe, the Super Brat, managed to produce with this match. I was lucky, because I can say that on that distant 5th July 1980: "I was there!"

I know this is the highlights of the match and I haven’t watched since I was a kid but I’m not sure McEnroe had even one verbal outburst or tantrum in this match, it’s like he was aware of the historical significance of this match and didn’t want to disrespect Wimbledon or his stoic opponent on the grandest of stages.
Great clips. Most others mostly show McEnroe going on the offensive, winning the tiebreak, then kind of out of nothing loses the 5th... Borg was way more versatile than that. Winning Paris on clay 6 times and Wimbledon on grass 5, back to back. Come on! He must have had some skills... Thinking of Nadal maybe at his peak but both Federer and Djokovic struggled at this.
If this movie was to let me know how out of breath and make my knees hurt, ball my eyes out... Call my best friend (we are equations) prank call a loved one then apologize and still be out of breath.

I am not a great Film-lover but Yes , I would give it a try :)
but Borg Macenroe has something that Federer Nadal has not: this match is the real birth of tennis. And we can not be born twice....
Mcenroe vs borg - the rivalry breakdown

The best one. In the best match ever.
loved this era, was 13 when this was on, big fan of Borg but remember I had to take my bike out for a ride because I couldn't stand the pressure.....
This was when Wimbledon was great. Boris in 85 changed the game forever!
The two greatest players ever
This is THEE tennis match.
Nothing else is close, or matters.
Ali/Frazier Magic/Bird
Borg/McEnroe.
wish I had Mac's feel on the volley.
silky
Every Tennis player who ever lived or who will ever live wishes they could volley like McEnroe!
Borg a lenda
So McEnroe lost! You cannot be serious!
3:36 out???
One of those game
In today's tennis I would put crocodiles at the head of the field to force players to go down the net ... My young son disobeys the coaches by doing almost always serves and volleyball. He doesn't always win ... but ALWAYS the audience applauds him.
I remember this was the opening story on the Sunday evening news.
Best match ever!
Elegant tennis that only Sampras, Edberg and Federer can match
This was a unique, incredible, legendary and unrepeatable page of this sport. I was lucky enough to have experienced it live: a fascinating show, full of emotions and simply unparalleled. Over the years there have been several champions, perhaps even stronger than these two myths, but no one has ever managed to produce the same emotions, the same incomparable atmosphere that Borg, the Swedish bear, and Mc Enroe, the Super Brat, managed to produce with this match. I was lucky, because I can say that on that distant 5th July 1980: "I was there!"
I still believe that this tennis match is the greatest of all time. The Nadal/ Federer 2008 final pales in comparison to this.
How come I can never find a replay, or even highlights of the 1981 Wimbledon final?....lots of posts of the 1980...which was great of course....but never the '81 match when JM finally won it.
I think this match had more hype and was more memorable
Smaller rackets....less banging more finesse...tennis is all baseline bangers now ;(
Saw this live on the tube-aside from the conner matches one of borgs best-
life was a struggle with wood rackets.
8:56 Really?! In a fraction of a second. Well. I think I'll drop it down there. McEnroe... WTF????
I was 9 remember it . I love most sports, athletics, golf, boxing, football, tennis, formula 1. Bjorn Borg was my favourite of all sports he was the coolest of all time. What a shame he quit playing grand slams at 25.
Borg 'played the game.' And because he played the game we were all the richer for it.
Remember when Borgy made a comeback years later with a wooden racquet?
Tennis should've done what baseball did. Keep to the wooden bats/rackets. Today's game would be so much better off for it.
McEnroe is the greatest male pro tennis player to ever play the game
One helluva player but there's too many to name in different eras.....
He only won 7 Grand slams , so that is the Criteria for ranking the best , not even the best of his Era .
Straight to NY MOMA
If this movie was to let me know how out of breath and make my knees hurt, ball my eyes out... Call my best friend (we are equations) prank call a loved one then apologize and still be out of breath.
Did you here that??? Thats right no grunting!!!! Great tennis between these two. Love the era in tennis.
😊😊😊😊😊😊
2024 here. It’s literally crazy to see how the game has changed with respect to the speed, power over finesse. Truly representative of society !
The game then looks horribly slow, but yet more skilful than contemporary times when back court tennis has made the game predictable and mechanical.
Extraordinary film " BorgMcEnroe" reveals all.
I suspect a " must watch" for you, my friend....
All I will say is that NOW I understand why Bjorn retired at just 26 years old !
Despite what people said about his attitude on the court., mcenroe produced some excellent serve and volley tennis. I'm gonna get flack for saying this but to me he's better than Bjorg overall. Bjorg was a calmer more disciplined individual who of course was a great player for his time and who i like and respect, but McEnroe was a better player overall.
Mac the best.
Why do people say borg had a two handed backhand?
because he did.... he just released early
