I wish that I had had more awareness at Bay Area conventions in the mid to late '80s when I stared to go, BayCon '85 being my first after WorldCon '84. Meeting Ken, Leila, Frank... and actually working for Frank and Gary years later but no real idea of the history there...
I also wish it were easier to find some of Ken's older (infamous?? ;-) ) releases such as ah, the infamous treatise on drawing rocks (piles of). It'd be great if more were out there on how folks worked. Ken's demos at conventions were always fantastic.

Ken's comment about finishing Koronis Rift was right, I knew that *I* could finish the entire game but I knew exactly the best route and all the game's tricks, and he was the first person to finish it other than me - it was indeed a great relief to me to hear that.

      Thanks for sharing, Noah!
It always surprised me that in those days, playtesting and QA were not a thing and yet LucasArts was always able to produce stable and crash-free games!

Really cool to see a great artist at work. So talented and humble guy but the work speech to itself. Thanks a lot :)

Great interview! It's wild for me to see the person that has created all this artwork I've seen over the decades. I remember being a kid and seeing the Maniac Mansion box for the first time. I thought it was so cool. Even today it's still one of my favorite game box covers. Looking back, it encapsulates the 80's perfectly. It's goofy, creepy, and mysterious. At the time I also wondered why the other characters weren't on the box, and assumed they weren't important, lol.

Iain's first BayCon was '90 (friend were co-chairs) and then 92 for the 10th anniv celebration... ;-)

What a trip down memory lane! Oh, and by the way, that picture of Martin Cameron, Ken Macklin, Steve Purcell & Mark Ferrari working at Skywalker Ranch-- I took that picture.

Wow. What a history! Lots of fun to just hear the stories and see artwork and development from games in my fond memories.
I thought it was great Ken Macklin keeps a journal of his daily work. I do the same but have it as a spreadsheet to log time/topic...moreso now that I'm an independent contractor. Unfortunately, I got a 12-year later start than him. So, I'll need to wait until he stops before I can catch up.
Oh @daniel, I just found your Podcasts as well. 🤯More to catch up on...

Hi Daniel, not sure if you’ll see this, but I recently was passed down two original Ken Macklin artworks, I’d love to have him sign it for me. Maybe you could pass a message along, if not I totally understand.
