Great video, Thanks.
Nicely explained.. I've been enjoying your other videos for the red and yellow penalty, and out of bounds areas.. thank you
Thanks!!
Excellent video.
Nicely explained. Thank you.
Well explained
Thanks for the view and comment!
Nice and clear video, lots of trees always where my ball usually ends up
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
If you go back on the line, you can relief one club length circle, not half circle.
Thanks for the view and comment! Be sure to watch our Red Penalty Areas in 2023 video for that rule update.
Is it true that when you take relief back on the line (the example where you went quite a way back in order to clear the top of tree) that you just need to stay within one club length of that line (so the semi-circle you made with the foot spray inaccurately leads one to believe you have to stay within that marked area. In reality, shouldn’t you have made two lines that are parallel and one club length away from the original line? Thanks for the great videos!
Thanks for the view and comment. How I illustrated this video prior to 2023 was correct. Effective January 1st 2023 the player must take a drop on the back on the line relief. Please watch this video to be up to date when taking back on the line relief.

Our course has some trees wrapped in wire mesh. If a ball gets stuck in the wire is that free relief?
Thanks for the view and comment! Technically the wire mesh would be classified as an abnormal
course condition if your ball is tied up in the mesh but I would ask your local club what the local ruling would be. When I have seen wire meshed trees here in Indiana during tournaments they will make note that you are entitled to free relief. Just check with your local course on that one. Great question!
Golf Rules Tip: Play 2 balls

Putting tees down to mark out an area seems to take a long time, can we just estimate where to drop the ball,
Thanks for the view and comment! The rules don’t say you need to mark out your relief areas just that your ball must land in the relief area and stay in there. In a serious tournament setting I recommend taking the time to map out with tees to avoid someone accusing you of taking relief incorrectly. It’s not required to put tees down and during a causal round I don’t to speed play but do during a tournament.
Is the backward extension an extension of the straight line from the unplayable ball location to the pin? So, if the errant shot landed far left or right, the extension could put you out of bounds or in a penalty area?
Boomergolf thank you for watching another video and thanks for the question!
You are correct on the definition of the backwards extension and yes it could lead you into an area that is out of bounds or in a penalty area. This of course will depend on how far you choose to go back and the proximity to these areas.
Per the rules of golf you are NOT allowed to drop a ball into out of bounds or penalty areas FYI.
Depending on the specific situation the backwards extension may not be the best option and another option should be taken.
Hope this helps!
Great video! Well explained! 🥰⛳️🏌️♀️
Example 1…If you dropped closer to the line of two club length and the ball rolls out of the area twice you can place the ball , almost teeing it up which give even more of an advantage …
You are correct as long as the ball lands in the relief area both times and then rolls outside the relief area then you can place the ball where it landed. Thanks for the view!
Jim, when i leave a bag at the next tee, can I lean my wedge against my right leg when I'm putting? I notice it does give me feedback if i move the lower body too much.
Steve thanks for watching our video! I believe if I’m interpreting your question correctly you are meaning putting on a golf green during play when you use your wedge against your leg? If so, I’m not 100% sure but it seems it would be against the rules. You could reach out to the USGA and email them if you like. If you mean you are practicing putting on the tee box which is allowed and using the wedge there before you play the hole to practice putting (if you are not slowing play) then placing your wedge against your leg and practicing your putting on the tee box of a hole is allowed. Hope this helps!
No that's cheating. You cant use clubs to give u feedback on a green. I doubt you can even do it on a fairway.
Option 4, leather wedge!
Rule 12D - Foot wedge
Rory did not watch the 2023 Rules Video Update and received a 2 stroke penalty for his one club drop off the line, instead of dropping as required on the line. This happened on his opening round, on the par 5 seventh hole at Spyglass at AT&T in 2024. He followed the 2019 rule in this video. Besure to watch the 2023 Rules Video Update!! Rory wishes he had know of the 2023 updated rule.
Can you explain the rules if a ball gets stuck in a tree branch? Rare but it has happened to me
Francis thanks for watching the video. If your ball gets stuck up in the air on a tree branch and you have made sure it is yours, then you can either play the ball as it lies or use the unplayable options as shown on the video. Hope this helps!
Tee up on a third shot seems odd to me.
My son hit a low flying seagull with his tee shot once. What is the rule here? The seagull didn't survive btw.
Artista thanks for your question. That would be considered a chance occurrence meaning the ball must be played as it lies with no penalty.
After striking the seagull wherever the balls ends up is where shot #2 will be struck from.
Hope this helps and have a blessed day!
@@girgolfllc Thank you. I would assume this has happened before. Courses near the ocean usually have a lot of bird life.
Foot wedge, hand wedge, just move it, all acceptable options.
What I like to do is hit a provisional ball for Unplayable Lie so that I don't have to go back to the tee or last ball location. Saves time. What you cleverly do is declare that you are hitting a provisional for possible Lost Ball, then you abandon your ball that is unplayable and play the provisional. Smart !! Kevin Na and his Caddie should have thought of that to save Kevin from carding a score of 16 on one hole. ua-cam.com/video/aWTXoNzuk8c/v-deo.html
Many years ago, I did a shot from that exact lie. Club broke, my hand needed medical attention.
Sorry to hear that and I hope you have fully recovered. Thanks for the view!
I can break my car window....and my wife might break my neck
His front yard is now the golf course?....so sorry neighbors
Chip or putt to the left.....no penalty, most golfers would do this???
You would then still be taking your 3rd shot and clearing the tree a lot more, pending on amount of overhang on tree
Americans. Why use one word when you can use 200? Get on with it, man!
Jim,in my experience as a 27 handicap and a five day member of a Aussie Bush track that has only five female members, I'd like to declare my course Unplayable, never mind an occasional unfortunate lie,the clubhouse is men only, mostly ferals, who spend the day propping up the bar,, Jim your just lucky,so stop whining about your bad luck,
Too much talk. Just get on with the rule description and options.
You waste so much of time explaining unnecessary details… stick to critical points
John thanks for the view and comment. I pride myself in being more detailed than other channels.
Wasn’t being disrespectful….sorry If it felt that way.
