Another good test of new ammo in a tried and true standby, the 30-30. A friend of mine just nailed a nice buck this past week here in Virginia with his 336. Good luck on Saturday!!!
Great video! My experience with the Deer Season XP: Definitely expands on impact and very accurate in my 336. My issue though is you rarely get a pass through. I prefer my deer leaking from 2 holes just in case I end up having to track one up and down these hollers. Good luck this year and thanks again for authentic, honest reviews.
Thanks for the informative video and best of luck on your pursuit of Bucky. I own a carbine edition, of the Marlin 336C, my first and only deer rifle used for hunting. I bought it in the late 70's from my saved up lawn mowing money. It has see-through scope rings like your friend's. Still has the original 4 power Weaver scope. My other deer rifle is a Marlin 308 that I bought before Marlin moved to Kentucky and afterwards went bankrupt. Nothing like a Marlin, especially their micro-groove 22 barrels. They sure don't make them like they used to and now that Ruger is producing them again the price sure has gone through the roof.
Hey Tom Thank you for another great episode. I really enjoy my Marlin 336W that I have owned for quite a long time. It always preforms well in the Deer woods. Thanks again and God Bless you and your family. By the way I haven’t seen your grandson lately hope he is doing well.
Just picked up a very nice Marlin 444ss for straight wall hunting in MD. Also, I have a 336 in 30/30 but can only hunt with it in a few counties in western MD and potentially eastern shore. Love the Marlins.
I enjoyed watching this video. Until I put a scope on, I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn, so to speak. Great brush gun. Hickok45 posted a video several years ago on how to remove the lever and action to do a proper cleaning. Happy Holidays and good luck on the pursuit!
I also have a a model 336 3030 was given to me by my father-in-law. I cherish it a lot. It’s the carbine model. Good luck this Saturday. I hope you take a deer. I can’t wait to see the video if you do.😅😅😅😅
My old waffle top (never drilled or tapped) "JM" Marlin 336SC in .30-30 will be headed to the woods in a few days loaded with the 170grn Federal JSPs it likes. I also plan on taking my "JM" Marlin 336 in .35 Remington for a post-Thanksgiving hunt. The ammo that "thumper" will be loaded with is the traditional 200grn JSP Remington load it likes best.
Tom, you got one of the good ones...old enough to have avoided the stupid checkering and engraving (unnecessary and something to jack the price up for). I like that rifle-length barrel; don't see too many of those. I had a Glenfield version in the early 70s that was ugly as sin (hardwood stock, not much polish on the metal, etc.) but would shoot lights out. I wish I still had it.
On a personal level I like the Glenfield model quite well. It's really the same as the 336, just without the walnut stock and for end. I know how you feel about a rifle that was once yours. Almost like a girlfriend from our younger days. One of my favorite guns is my Glenfield model 60 with the "squirrel stock". Great little shooter.
I bought a Marlin 336 carbine when I was 16. Ordered it in the mail from Whit Plains NY. Had it mailed to me in Pennsylvania. Came home from school one day and there it sat in the corner on the porch. It was $79.95 and I don’t remember the postage cost. I was one proud kid. Killed my first buck that November with it. No parental signature and no paper work other than a bill of sale. No signature required by the post office. Try that in today’s world. I still hunt with it on occasion.
I like your marlin with the 2/3 tube. Very nice. My old 336 prefers Rem 150gr cor-lokts. They actually stay within 1” for 3-shots at 100yds. Other brands stay around 2” at 100yds.
I own a Marlin Glenfield model 36. It has the short magazine tube that holds 4 rounds of 30/30. I’ve contemplated putting a scope on it but never have. The iron sights on it are really good and it’s very accurate out to 150 yards. If I hunt with a scope I have a 1956 Winchester model 70 in .270 with an old 4x weaver scope. Fired 3 rounds thru it the other day to check zero and it shots sub moa at 100 yards. Enjoy your videos and the old Marlin lever guns. What scope do you have on yours? Thanks
Thanks Tom, i inherited my stepfathers Marlin JM gold ( sight, trigger, etc,) 336W. Can't use in Ohio ( which is B/S) on deer, but if I'm correct the 360 L is as powerful as the 3030. Good hunting and God Bless.
I have the 336c 35Rem but can't use it in Ohio. So I don't shoot it. The parallax could cause you to have a different point of impact than he does, since you can't get a very good cheek weld on it but nice video.
Another good video Sir. I have two Marlin 336s. One says 336 the other says 336-W. They look the same to me but maybe you might know what the W is for. Have a great day and a better hunt. Richard
The whole point with see thru scope mounts is that in hunting in thick woods and cover, the iron sights are what one would use, a scope is a hindrance.
My favorite marlin is the 336ER in 356win. It’s like a 35rem on steroids. Mine likes the factory win 250gr. It wears a leupold vari-x III in 2.5-8. Considerable more performance than a 30-30 in the same frame.
Water is rather tough on projectiles. I'd expect a deer to be much less of an issue on that projectile, especially considering it was 24-30 inches water. Love the .30-30 platforms, whether 336 or 94 or the replicas.
I don't care for the deer season ammo because of that core separation. I prefer the older Power Point 150 or the Federal Fusion 170. Good luck with that ammo I'm sure it will take a deer but there is better ammunition out there.
What year your Marlin was made because of you when they have now they're not very well-made I have mine from 1979 originally made by the Marlin company
It depends on the size of your head. LOL Flush mounted is far too low for me. Each person will have a different placement. I use see-thru's to raise the scope to my eyesight plane. My buddy can barely see through it. But it's for me not him.
Change those rings and make like your set up because if he misses that falls on you, those see-through rings stink, useless take em off put some real ones on. Aim small, good hunting, GOD bless.
This post is rubbish, see thru mounts are very useful and on a lever action gun such as a Marlin or Winchester gun in .30-.30 Winchester used to hunt in thick cover the Iron sights are what one would use.
What a treasure you have !! I have really good performance with the Federal Hammer Down ammo. A link provided to a guy that does testing of all ammo. Good luck this year. I took a real nice 8pt on my son's place in Mason, TX opening weekend. Rem Mod722 300 Savage. ua-cam.com/video/ALvL0R8bldQ/v-deo.html
Every shooting utube video I've seen with an older guy wearing glasses that bashes see thru scope mounts, which are infact very useful, when asked if they have worn glasses since childhood and don't like iron sights because of problems focusing on certain points or objects, is yes. I have see thru scope mounts on a variety of rifles because the rifles have good accurate iron sights and shoot pretty similar with iron sights and the scope. Your eyes are organs and need to be used exercised. There are people that wear glasses and have vision problems that lasik eye surgery would eliminate yet they are afraid to get the surgery because their mind can't process the eyes seeing with 20/20 vision. As someone that has had knee surgery, shoulder surgery and hip replacement surgery my mind, my brain has had to retrain my 64 year old body with physical therapy and exercise to work. What good is having 20/20 vision and being able to focus at a variety of distances when your right arm can't hold up steady enough a handgun to shoot accurately. Your mind has to make your shoulder heal, and your mind has to make your eyes see the iron sights. A scope is little use when hunting in thick woods and you need to have confidence when shooting with iron sights and that means practice.
I’m a 336 fan myself. .35 Remington.
Love those 30-30 marlin's! Great video as always
Thanks for another great video, those Marlin lever guns are special!
Another good test of new ammo in a tried and true standby, the 30-30. A friend of mine just nailed a nice buck this past week here in Virginia with his 336. Good luck on Saturday!!!
Thanks, and best wishes to you my friend.😊
Hey Tom just wanted to add a Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family and God Bless

The see thru mounts are quite useful for hunting in thick woods and having a nice set of iron sights is the way to go.
Hey Tom Thank you for another great episode. I really enjoy my Marlin 336W that I have owned for quite a long time. It always preforms well in the Deer woods. Thanks again and God Bless you and your family. By the way I haven’t seen your grandson lately hope he is doing well.
I have a 336W also. What does the W stand for. I got it used but the owner didn’t know what the W was for. It’s a good, accurate rifle. Thanks
Great video and I believe your right about the see thur sights I never use them myself it doesn’t feel right to me
I have western auto supply co. revolution mod 200 30:30 which was made by Marlin. It's a 336 and it's a great shooting rifle.
Just picked up a very nice Marlin 444ss for straight wall hunting in MD. Also, I have a 336 in 30/30 but can only hunt with it in a few counties in western MD and potentially eastern shore. Love the Marlins.
Nice rifles, I've got a 336 35 remington. They are great rifles. Thanks for the nice review and good luck hunting. Subbed
what ammo do you use for deer hunting with the 35 Rem?
@@Bass1923 I have some federal and Remington 200 grainers
@@douglasreed9237 thanks for the quick reply.
Another good video Tom. Always wanted one of those Marlins.
Looking forward to a deer hunting video or two, Tom. Best of luck!!!
Great choice to take to the woods!
Those see thru mounts are eye busters.
I’ve seen so many people get an eye full of scope trying to use those things
Agreed. They're terrible.
I also have a a model 336 3030 was given to me by my father-in-law. I cherish it a lot. It’s the carbine model. Good luck this Saturday. I hope you take a deer. I can’t wait to see the video if you do.😅😅😅😅
I hope you got some of that rain I got here last night. Those leaves are awfully dry. We needed the rain over here for sure.
Yes we did, thanks.
Good luck this season!
Thanks. My 336 in 30-30 is a 1970 anniversary issue. Like you I prefer the scope mounted low to the receiver. Thanks for sharing.
Love those old waffle tops and on an SC model to boot. Good luck on your hunt 👍🏻🦌
And I meant Hornady lever evolution rounds

I believe the 24" barrel with the shorter magazine is the 336A and the 20" barrel with almost equal length mag tube is the RC regular carbine.
I bought a Marlin 336 carbine when I was 16. Ordered it in the mail from Whit Plains NY. Had it mailed to me in Pennsylvania. Coincidentally the rifle I have also prefers Remington Core Lokt rounds, but I saw the Winchester XP's and wanted to give them a try.

❤ Like the see under scopes for close game 😊 Get that guy some lower scope mounts and he will get his shots off alot better 😊
I agree, but it's up to him.
The whole point with see thru scope mounts is that in hunting in thick woods and cover, the iron sights are what one would use, a scope is a hindrance.
Got my first doe thus year last Saturday with my old 300 savage heading to the woods with my 243 now
My favorite marlin is the 336ER in 356win. It’s like a 35rem on steroids. Mine likes the factory win 250gr. It wears a leupold vari-x III in 2.5-8. Considerable more performance than a 30-30 in the same frame.
Im a bit of a Marlin nut. Ive got two 30-30s , a 444 Marlin, 32spl, 35 Remington, 375Winchester, 45-70. That's not including my 1894 Marlins.
A Marlin 336 in 30-30 is an excellent choice for deer here in Tennessee. In my opinion, a see thru mount is a waste of money.
It should work but good old Remington Core-Lokt is proven. Great video.
I believe I’d stick with Remington Core-Lokt
Water is rather tough on projectiles. I'd expect a deer to be much less of an issue on that projectile, especially considering it was 24-30 inches water. Love the .30-30 platforms, whether 336 or 94 or the replicas.
Those see through mounts suck. The Weaver mounts are good but normally scratches the scope
Yours is a 336A rifle, which are my favorite after 1893, 93, 1936, and 36 rifles. Serial number for 1955 starts with "M".
PA season starts the next weekend. That’s what I’ll be toting into the deer woods
I don't care for the deer season ammo because of that core separation. I prefer the older Power Point 150 or the Federal Fusion 170. Good luck with that ammo I'm sure it will take a deer but there is better ammunition out there.
Great Videos, We have the same taste in rifles!
What year your Marlin was made because of you when they have now they're not very well-made I have mine from 1979 originally made by the Marlin company
I hope you get a big one
If I do, I hope I capture it on camera so I can share it with you.
It depends on the size of your head. LOL

I use see-thru's to raise the scope to my eyesight plane. My buddy can barely see through it. But it's for me not him.
See thru mounts are very useful when a gun has a good set of iron sights and when hunting in thick forests.
The “W” stands for Walmart spec’s guns
Up here in Ohio cant use 30-30 unless they changed the laws
Them XP deer seasons by Winchester Look like they're slow killing to me I'll stick with my PowerPoints
My carbine 336 l9ves 170grn corlokts .hello from Port George nova scotia
Like the old ones, don’t like the new with the safety..
I’m a lever gun guy❤
👍👍🦌
Any chance you would will one of those rifles to me.
👍👍 ........
