I don't understand how Tony Banks had so much to offer with Genesis but hardly anything in his solo works? I'm just glad Genesis brought the best out of him.
Honestly, even though Genesis often shared writing credits amongst the band as a whole, Tony has writing credits on more of their tracks than the other members.
I personally think that if there was any single member most important to their sound, it was Tony Banks for sure. Not to knock the others at all, it's just that I think the way he writes songs is pretty distinct and somewhat unique in general compared to any other songwriter period. Nobody else sounds like him and Genesis by extension.
Extraordinary rendition of a superb score by Mr. Banks.

Back in the mid-2000s, when I first discovered this song (and its album, A Trick of the Tail), Mad Man Moon seemed to have been widely regarded as an also-ran from an album featuring numerous better known and more beloved songs. I couldn't find a single person who liked it anywhere near as much as I did.
In the past few years, it seems like more people have grown to appreciate this underrated masterpiece, and I couldn't be happier. More positive impressions and performances/arrangements makes it more likely that somebody who hasn't heard MMM yet might give it a try.
I can only hope they'll find it just as moving and mesmerizingly beautiful as I did right from the very first time I heard it. Everyone should know at least once in their lives the sense of soaring, boundless joy at discovering a new favorite piece of music.
I've always thought "Mad Man Moon" was far better than Entangled and Ripples... I also think AToTT is a very good album but far away from the previous amazing albumns. Wind & Wuthering is also a more coherent and interesting work imho.
I remember sitting in a bean bag chair as a teen, with my giant Technics speakers and a turntable, listening to this album while looking at the album cover and liner sleeve. This brings the memory back nicely...
