1961 was the year I left school and it was the first dance ever to drag all the boys onto the dance floor who were previously self conscious when it came to more formal dancing. The twist eventually evolved into what we see on the dance floor today. More about self expression than formal dancing.
It's fascinating seeing how popular dancing was at one point. It was like a primary form of social interaction. I know some people dance a lot still but they're typically 'nightclub people' it's not something everyone and their sister does
What's especially interesting about this video for me is that these dancers are all definitely adults. Not high school kids, not college-aged kids, and not even past college-age. Adults What's more, these adults seem to have so much enthusiasm, glamor, and talent. If I had been alive at the time of this video I could not dismiss them as has-beens or wannabes.
@@BAMovin Thank you, though I had figured that out. But I said what I said because I've seen grown up dance instructors that don't have much in the way of glamor or enthusiasm. That adds to the dance talent if they dance well.
This has its parallel in restaurants. In the 50's and 60's it was adults working in restaurants, not kids. Two married adults making minimum wage in those days could afford to buy a car, a house, and put their kids through school.
Everybody of all ages fell for it. All the kids did. Except me. But my older brother would twist with abandon at village dances up till 1970, maybe beyond.
Vividly remember my mother doing the twist in her aqua pedal pushers she got through the Spiegle cataloge and telling my Dad to "Get with it, its the sixties!"
My wife twisted with Chubby Checker in the 1990s at one of our company dinner-dances. His voice was just the same sound as when I heard it echoing down the stairs while waiting to get into the Hayloft in DC in 1961. Alas, I had to leave to get back to Quantico. The Hayloft was packed.

The Twist was written by Hank Ballard in 1958. It was the b-side of " Teardrops On Your Letter". Neither side a or b did very well on the charts. Chubby Checker( Ernest Evans ) recorded it twice. In 1960 and 1962- the later one had a slightly different arrangement. It is the only record by the same artist to ever reach #1 in two separate years.
