  • Strange is an understatement for Yorgos Lanthimos new movie but should we ever be shocked by looking at his previous films.
His unique storytelling abilities is commendable for he has no issue breaking out of the formulaic mould of traditional filmmaking and instead crafts a otherworldly atmosphere with his use of green screens and set designs.
And with that brave boldness he has been showered with the utmost praise for his new feature film Poor Things.
A critical darling at the moment, Poor Things has catapulted to be the best film of 2023 for a lot of people.
Rave reviews have been non-stop since the film screened at film festivals and the momentum it has gained has delivered Emma Stone to the top of the pile for awards as she brilliantly puts in a performance of a life as the movies main character Bella.
Bella was a pregnant woman that jumped off a bridge in hope of ending her life which she succeeded in but for her, a mad scientist named Goddard played by Willem Dafoe takes her to his lab and for an experiment, he inserts Bella’s unborn baby’s brain into her to see the results of what would happen.
And what does happen, is Bella, a grown woman with a child's brain begins to relive again. She has to relearn everything, from walking to talking.

      This was my letterboxd review:
As 2001 charted the evolution of humanity, poor things charts the evolution of woman.
Mirroring the oppression and cognitive enslavement of women throughout history, Bella Baxter transforms from an uneducated exploited slave into an awakened, self-actualised, fully-autonomous woman.
Lanthimos uses his typical satire of the absurdity of social norms and polite society in a way that exposes the absurdity of a social norm that had long-endured and was historically perpetuated, that women were inferior. Bella questions everything, including every polite social norm out there, but most importantly the norm or idea that she, and women, shouldn't be the master of her destiny.
When she finally breaks free of her God creator, and her abusive ex-husband, marking the end of her intellectual awakening, she affirms the central idea that those who controlled her knew all along, that you can't control the world if you don't understand it.

Attention to accuracy: Bella is the new creation (baby's brain in adult body). Victoria was the pregnant woman and adult body

I forgot the name of Victoria so I called her Bella...also I think it avoids confusion when I just call both characters Bella but thanks for the feedback!
