Private Pilot Flight : 3 miles Visibility? Dont Trust The Weather! Cessna 172

- The local AWOS (weather) was reporting 4 miles visibility, but conditions seemed lower! Don't trust that the automated weather system will keep you safe! This was a good chance to get up with the student and let him experience 3 miles viz. I strongly encourage all my students to get their IFR rating as soon as practical and to limit the conditions they fly in until they do.
It is a good idea to get out with a competent instructor to see what shouldn't do as a new private pilot. AOPA.ORG has some great free online lessons about VFR pilots flying into IMC ...the survival rate is extremely low. ~

Too many student pilots see 10 miles vis on the weather and think it's really just 10. On a clear day you can even see a hundred miles with some altitude. A newer VFR pilot flying into a 5 or 6 mile vis, thinking it's safe, can be a dangerous situation.
This is a really good point that should be emphasized more. I was that student not too long ago. Went flying on a rainy day with 9miles vis, I figured out real quick that 10 isn’t always 10. When I came back to my home airport the vis had dropped down to about 4-5miles. I ended up referencing the ils in. Great lesson there.
The video was great best part is when the student is like this is crazy 😂...lol
Ceilings were 2700 agl and 4 miles viz when we took off according to the AWOS (weather station)
This is a good look at what legal minimums are. This can help build a foundation for your personal minimums! Great content.
It was a great teaching moment ! The METAR says it’s all good but the student could see that blindly following the reported weather can get you in trouble!
Hi I would like to know if I can snap shot your video and to show people how 3 or 4 SM looks like in the air from cockpit. Thanks.
Have at it ... what ever a snapshot is! Thanks for watching!
He meant take an actual picture of the visibility from the cockpit so people can see how low it is.
Dangerous. No way you can see traffic.
Totally agree that’s why we did one lap and went back to the hanger. Visibility reported on the surface didn’t match what we encountered aloft. Luckily no one else was dumb enough to be up there flying with us, and we gave a Pirep.
