This is so helpful. My dad was a pilot. He took my mom and I up when I was basically a newborn; he started paying for lessons when I was 14; and he dreamt of me flying for the military; but I was never really invested in it. He died 11 years ago and I really regret not paying more attention as a kid. Now at 36, I've decided to get my ppl. These videos are so helpful to refresh my memory on the lingo and instrumentation. Hope my instructor is as knowledgeable and clear in direction as you are!

I am a military flight instructor (helicopters) and it truly has been a pleasure listening to you instruct. I have always been pretty critical of civilian flight instructors because they lack that human touch and they forget that they were in the same boat sometime ago. You, sir, are an artist when it comes to flight instruction. Many CFIs could learn a lot from watching you.

I recently started taking flight lessons and I now have 3 hours under my belt, obviousy I still have a long way to go, but your videos really help me become more familiar with the plane and processes etc. Brilliant work! The way you explain everything so clearly is really helpful and the calmness of your voice makes it sound so easy. I just wanted to thank you so much for this I started lessons and I was going in blind with no training or preface before getting into the plane the first 3 lessons. I did not understand anything the instructor said or told me. I have been so overwhelmed. I did not want to seem rude by asking questions. This has helped me make sense of everything that has been said now. This is a lifelong dream of mine to fly, I did not even think it was possible for me to be able to do it. I an fullfilling a dream at almost 60 years old. Do not ever stop dreaming or living. I can't wait until my next lesson this will make a world of difference

Yeah that’s a good point, I already had 3 flight lessons and I feel so discouraged, I wish I had someone to tell me that is normal to feel overwhelmed and that with time everything is going to come together just fine. Sometimes all we need as students is not just the knowledge but also some words of encouragement… Some empathy. And he explains everything so clear and so well, my instructor just tell me to read the book and then expects me to be able to perform everything all together. He wants me to know all the procedures by memory, to do communications and the callouts and I wish he could just let me learn the basics of flying an aircraft first… He also gives me the controls and then notes what I am doing wrong, but he never explains what I am supposed to do and expect. It’s being very difficult. If I could wish for one thing is to have an instructor just like this, communicative and clear, and someone who could give me some assurance instead of putting me under so much pressure… I am now seeing this videos in hopes to lear how to do it, you know your instructor is not doing a good job when you have to go to UA-cam to get an understanding… 😞 Thank you so much for posting this videos, they mean a lot 🙏🏻🥺

I was taught that it's more efficient to scan from right to left.
The reason is that since one reads from left to right, it's easier for your eyes to skip or miss something, such is the natural, practiced flow your eyes normally would use while reading.
I was taught to scan from FAR RIGHT to near right, then shift focus to FAR MIDDLE and near middle, and finally from FAR LEFT to near left. Scanning from FAR first is useful because anything in your mid-range or close-range field-of-view would be easily noticeable.
Try it and you'll see; you will be acutely aware of much more detail by using this method.

You Sir are a great instructor. I just watched pt2 and now this episode. I’m here reminiscing what my father and I would do when he let me take the controls at the age of 15. We’d get up snap up the gear, and he’d let me get to heading, climb to altitude, trimming the plane and then practice coordinated turns; I ate it up. All in a Mooney Executive 21. Don’t know why I never got a license; I passed ground school while in High School. I guess I got distracted with other interests; girls and motorcycles. Lol. I sure miss it though.

Considering a lesson or two myself to overcome small remaining fears. Thanks for clear information without trying to baffle brains with bull! Lot of other pilot trainers would do well to take notes from Captain Scott.

Captain Scott I love your videos! One day I plan on taking flight lessons and I watch a lot of you tube videos to gain basic knowledge in hope of when I start I'm not overwhelmed. You explain things so clearly that it's easy to understand. Keep up the good work!!

What a great video to watch! Even if you aren't planning on getting your pilot's license, this video is a pleasure to watch. Excellent job Captain Scott on the instruction and the video production. I am so thankful for UA-cam, especially since there is nothing but crap on TV anymore!

This guy is a great instructor! He does an excellent job of explaining everything in laymen’s terms! He doesn’t assume you know anything; he explains everything and I love that! Plus, he just seems very knowledgeable and low keyed. I really appreciate and enjoy his lessons!

I am just starting out. Got my 4 hours flight training in while studying for ground test. I am just not getting the take-off and rudder control. My instructor is a good friend, but it's like studying calculus in college, you need other books to see which instructions click. Yours is very nicely done. If you were close to Dallas, I'd take a few or more lessons from you. Thanks.

Good demeanor. I like the 300' before pattern altitude before you make your crosswind (a lot of CFIs don't teach this), and right rudder during takeoff roll thru the entire climb, to compensate for Left Turning Tendencies. You remind me of my initial PPL CFI. Calm cool and collective. You explain the WHAT, WHY and HOW. Essential teaching method. Thanks for sharing this video.

Excellent job of explaining things in a calm manner and taking time to explain the important stuff. I've seen instructors that intimidate and frighten their students even yelling at them at times. That is not a way to promote aviation and to instruct with real learning and retention in mind. You have it down pat and I wish more instructors would follow this example of teaching. Well done Captain Scott.

Captain Scott, first time watching your videos, what an excellent video and you truly portray your experience in this video, I work for Boeing in Tukwila and at 49 I decided to fulfill my lifelong dream to learn how to fly, I’m a bit old but I never shook off the desire and the dream so here I go next week will start at Galvin in Seattle, I am very nervous but very excited, I will watch your videos and absorb as much as I can so I can be a good pilot, thank you for sharing your expertise thru your videos!.
    Cheers,

You're a wonderful instructor. Thoroughly enjoy how you're explaining the steps through a VFR flight. And you're so right, after my first flight lesson in a 172 I did feel like my head was going to explode. I came home and collapsed on my bed because my brain was overloaded with so much new information. Nothing on terra firma prepared me for flying an airplane. But with each lesson it gets better and better. And a great instructor is a big, big help. Yes, never stop learning. I've subscribed to FLYING magazine for 30 years. Lots of great tips and important safety lessons make for good reading and sage advice.
