    I think he was always on them but when he gained all that weight and started becoming a big power hitter it hurt his legacy. I've watched baseball for 35 or so years and he's the best center fielder I ever saw in that time. Many of his contributions to the game didn't show up in the stats but he was unbelievable, the man could cover 2/3 of the outfield by himself. On defense alone he was a generational talent and with offense threw in he was definitely one of the best to do it for a period of time. However when he got big and started hitting homers he wasn't fooling anybody about his ped use. When your stats are borderline for the hall of fame and you take steroids it just removes you from consideration. It's a shame because he was definitely a hall of fame talent. Also when he got old he got old quickly. His production just stopped suddenly and his career was over. I think he's probably the best outfielder to not be in the hof.

    I'm a Brave homer to the bone, but I'll say this! If you want to put Jones in the HOF based purely on the fact that he might be the best defensive fielder of all time, I'm cool with that. But he IS NOT an HOFer offensively. There some glaring, and I mean GLARING problems with his numbers. There is simply no way to get around this! Andruw played 17 years, and averaged 130 games played per season. He played over 150 games in 11 straight seasons. Yet he is well short of even 2000 hits! Jones is not in the top 1200 of career RBIS or career runs scored. But HE IS in the top 30 all time in strike outs! There is simply no way to sweeten those numbers, they are simply wretched. There are literally 1200 dudes with more RBIs and runs scored than Andruw Jones, and a whole heap of them aren't in the hall of fame either. And we are talking about folks with significantly better career stat lines than Andruw. Hell, we just now got guys like Vlad Guerrero, Larry Walker and Fred McGriff in. I'm sorry, if you are not even in the top 1200 all time in RBIs and Runs, but are in the top 30 in strikeouts? Less than 200 hits and a .250 average? That's not a HOFer! But hey, that's my opinion, and I'm no expert.

      You know what your problem is? The same problem so many sports fans have. You are a stat head. Stats only tell part of the story. How many atheltes in any sport have had phenomenal stats but didn’t win shit? Didn’t show up in big moments? Your numbers can’t contradict what I saw. What I watched. Dude was big time. We all knew it when we watched him. Do you watch a quarterback play a great game and then say “yeah but he only threw for 220 yds and 1 TD.” Maybe YOU do but any knowledgeable fan knows there is more to it than stats. Stats do matter. They do tell part of the story. But your WHOLE story is based on stats. It’s like the dumbass modern managers who do everything the computer tells them to do. There are only so many factors that can be quantified numerically. Life and reality is not a math equation.
      Not to mention. One can interpret stats many different ways. You say Jones played 17 seasons. How many of those seasons was he completely washed and should have just retired? Or lost weight and got into shape? What penalty did him hanging on too long put onto his stats. Nobody gives a shit about what he did after he left Atlanta. Recalculate your numbers for those 11 seasons and see how those look.
      Even then….it’s called the “Hall of Fame”. Dude stood out and was respected in his time. He was a famously great baseball player.
      Maybe we should vote out PeeWee Reese?

    • @AlphanumericCharacters
      @AlphanumericCharacters Рік тому

      ….and another thing. RBI? How many seasons was dude hitting directly behind Chipper? Got a HOF dog eating before you there tends to be less meat on the bone. Hell, around late 90’s when they had Galarraga if memory serves they lead all of baseball with HRs. Had Chipper, Brian Jordan, and Andres hitting in front of him.

    • @donwhiteley3293
      @donwhiteley3293 4 місяці тому

      Dude, the first time you typed it I thought it was a typo, then you did it twice more which makes me wonder where you got your stats. He's well within the top 1200 in runs and RBI; he's 121st in RBI and 182nd in runs. You also failed to mention that he ranks in the top 50 in HRs (48th). I'm also not sure what you consider "well short of 2000 hits" but 67 hits shy of 2000 is not my definition of "well short". There are around 180 position players currently in the HOF, which makes those career rankings in line with the number of players in the HOF. Also, you are supposed to compare players to others at their position, not just overall. Among CF he ranks 6th in HRs and 14th in RBI. There are currently 19 CF in the HOF and most positions have at least 24 inductees. Even the numbers you mentioned show he belongs in Cooperstown. Edited for spelling.

Me and my dad called him mr double play because if he came up with guys on base you can bet he would see nothing but breaking balls and he would sure enough top one for an easy double play. If he struck out that was considered a small victory. Literally all these home runs are off of fastballs.
