How to change the PCV valve on your Subaru
excellent video! I've been told changing the PCV valve on a Subaru 2.5 is more important than usual due to high pressure build up causing head gaskets to fail. I have a 2007 Impreza OBS with 74,000 that now has an external head gasket leak. I didn't know where to find the PCV valve but thanks to your video I can change it on my own and hopefully prevent any future disasters.
Thank you Brian! Learning how to do basic upkeep and maintence with my 2002 Outback and I've making lists of projects and things to do just to monitor and observe adjustments and etc. I love learning all the different tips and tricks people have offered and watching this was cool to learn about teflon tape and how it works etc. For a dude that only knows how to do an oil change, it seems pretty fun fixing up and tuning my car. While I try to mend a weird CEL IACV issue, I plan on doing a number of tune ups while I'm operating and PCV valve is one of them and this video helped me out a lot. Thanks again!
Thank you! I used liquid teflon and let it dry for a day. Between the new air filter, new spark plugs/wires, new PCV valve, newer refurbished battery, dielectric greasing of everything I could/should, replacing all fuses, changing the fuel filter, restoring the headlights plastic, changing the oil/oil filter, oil drain plug and washer, cleaning the brakes, changing the inner and outer tie rods, cleaning the MAF sensor, and putting a bottle of engine/cat cleaner in gas tank and doing some long periods of highway driving, it's like a whole different car! Next I want to do the transmission fluid/filter, gear oil, then everything brake related, and cleaning of oxygen sensors after I get some crows foot wrenches. Then windshield replacement and repainting car. My first car repairs/maintenance, it's going really well. Just a note to random people, I didn't need to disconnect fuel pump connection to change fuel filter, I wore eye protection and had a drip pan but nothing sprayed out.
Thanks for the straight foward information! I'm very fed up with blasting music, long winded, gut wrenching idle talk which makes learning so freaking difficult!
For inexperienced mechanics, little tips such as the proper socket punch is great to know!
I just diagnosed and replaced a PCV hose with a huge hole for a customer of mine. It was on a 2003 Ford Focus. Engine was running horribly and I could hear the vacuum leak, but just couldn't see it. I found a small hole on a smaller hose (for the evap), but was pretty impressed to find the PCV hose with a collapsed portion right next to the intake manifold. Hose was just absolutely rotten.
Thank you so much! I like how you described the symptoms of a faulty PCV valve and what its purpose on the car.
Keep doing videos.
@DP02806 Common leaks include Cam and crank seals. Rear piston wrist pin access covers. Oil pan gasket. Valve cover gaskets. You can pull the transmission to get to the rear engine leaks. I've done that before.
Dude, love your laid-back style, and good flow. Very easy to follow, and makes things approachable. Thank you!
Thanks so much for this! It always makes me feel a little more confident in what I'm doing to watch someone do the same thing first.
Simple, concise, but still has exactly what I need to know. Perfect video, thanks a ton!
Huzzah! Thanks to your instruction, I got mine off though it still has some rattle to it. I might as well put the new one in and spray out the old with carb cleaner and keep it for backup. The spring clamp was quite a pain compared to yours as I needed pliers to clear the barb on the valve but it felt good to get it done. Next up, oil filter proving difficult to remove by hand and I cant find my claw...
For any newcomers, I am working on an 06 Tribeca and the valve is tucked under another tube running parallel and to get a ratchet in I had to remove the battery.
Your the best I put as much as I can to my GC8 WRX MY99 JDM it’s the only version we get here in Australia and I can’t find not much detailed videos like you and I have been binge watching you for weeks thank you heaps cheers from down under Sydney Australia 🇦🇺
I just plugged it up and ran the other side to a vented catch can. I could not believe how much blow by this thing catches. Glad this is not getting recycled into my manifold anymore.
thank you so much Brian from 11 years ago!!!
@scarhead8711 Thanks for subscribing- hope you enjoy the vids!
Right at the elbow on the drivers side front of the motor. Way to go!
Not really. It comes out pretty well- and besides teflon tape's properties won't hurt anything in the cylinder head or exhaust unless there's TONS of it going through.
Dittos! Great video..sound /voice good, and no goofy music. You make it look very doable. ..my afternoons business is replacing the upstream O2 sensor. I am pretty sure the engine you are working on is the same as my '06 forester. THANKS AGAIN!
I don't know. All I show is a part number of PCV1278 for it on the gas engine 3.7L. They are usually in the valve cover on most vehicles. You can find it by following an air hose from the air filter box to the valve cover. Some are integrated into the upper intake manifold.
It doesn't have a conventional disposable in line filter. It only has the strainer in the tank.
@transdetendal You know I meant to narrate that and forgot! It's P.ositive C.rankcase V.entilation. You're pistons are moving at a high rate of speed and there would otherwise be an imbalance in air flow within the motor. To balance that you have hoses from your valve covers and to the air filter box so air can rotate through the engine and not create aerodynamic drag from piston movement.
Confused how a one-way airflow threads into the intake manifold, usually the PCV Valve is near the crankcase. So my question is, is the PCV Valve on our Subaru's more like an inlet manifold valve? How can I be sure the valve airflow is the correct way. Other Subaru models have the PCV Valve threaded into the crankcase, while some others have it threaded into the intake manifold.
New subscriber here, gotta say, I love your teaching style. You make it easy and your humor is a great bonus. I am a
Hi Brian! Love your videos btw! I changed my pcv valve today, it was in a terrible condition. the condition of the cables was Scary, so much dirt is inside. Can you please show us how to clean manifold and how to clean pcv valve cables. btw, now my idle rpm wend down under 1K, before change it was over 1K. I think when i was trying to clean tubes ///I might have clogged them instead. Please enlight :) Thank you!
Just changed pcv valve on 09 forester. Thanks for your video! You're right, they're seized on there from the factory.
@transdetendal Wikipedia have a great description of the history of the PCV system and how it all works. It's basically a system designed to recycle blow-by gasses that get past rings and into the crankcase. Old (1950's) cars just had a breather tube that allowed those hydrocarbons to drip and vent to atmosphere. But those gasses account for almost a majority of pollution from vehicles, so GM invented the PCV system and shared it with all....
Hey Brians, I hope u can help me. Where is the PCV Valve on my JETTA 2000 Vr6 / 12v. I do a little of research, and some people that the PCV is with the AIR INTAKE TUBE, is this TRUE?. So if I want to change the PCV Valve, I have to Change all the AIR INTAKE TUBE?. Thanks for this Videos...
@R3dR1ot366 How many miles are on it?
What year is that Forester, Brian? All the other videos I'm seeing show the PCV valve located on the block, with the hose running from there to the intrake.
It may be different due to the different PCV design and additional emissions equipment.
Thank you for the video. It ended too soon though. do you put it back in and just hand-tighten or does it have to be torqued?
just put it thight
brian..u rvideos helped me alot..fuel filter on 2008 2.5 plain old impreza..is that in the tank??
Thanks for sharing your video.
I took the hose off and used the 19mm socket to unscrew the valve, but the base is turning instead of the valve unscrewing. Is there something special I have to do to get it to unscrew?
Appreciate the explanation of symptoms as I had oil vapors staining the air filter and could not figure why!
Brian - great site - i have subscribed. I have a 1996 Subaru legacy with only 130K. Body is starting to rot through and the engine, which has been leaking a bit of oil for the past 6 yrs, is now leaking furiously (1 qt/wk). My mechanic tells me "everything is leaking". While the oil pan gasket is out of my league (I can't pull the engine out), I can do the valve covers without much trouble. Are there any other gaskets that might be leaking that I can change without pulling the engine?
i watched the video.helped alot.i have 2008 impreza...follow hose down to bottom its located there...19mm deep sockets is needed....took me about 15 minutes to replace...
awesome vid very helpful. I am a novice at fixing cars and my 93 prizm is very straight forward. my moms subaru looks like a horrid scary mess to me. thanks for showing me where the pcv goes!
any ideas for what to do for this situation? 2005 Subaru Forester. Took it in for exhaust manifold gasket replacement....all good there, but car developed a crazy rough idle. Clean throttle body, new plugs/wires. Local Sub shop guy (different than the exhaust guy) pulled one of the new plugs and said it didn't look like that cylinder was getting any fuel. So...I am an idiot when it comes to cars.....should I change fuel filter and pcv. Why would one cylinder not be getting gas all of a sudden? Thanks for this video and for any help you might have for my question!
Really really helpful! You narrate this perfectly, thanks brother!
My recently purchased 98 subaru outback doesn't have that vacuum hose you moved out of the way at the beginning of this video....just an exposed "nipple." Can you provide any insight as to where that hose should connect to from there?
3000 / 4 (cylinders) =750 which is about right for idle speed. Is this for a racing tach or something? You have switch settings for # of cylinders. Select one. Like for a motorcycle.
Where do you get 3000
hey brian, I think I have diagnosed my WRX's problem to be the TPS. Would you be so kind as to post a video about replacing the Throttle Position Sensor on 2 liter turbo subaru motors?
Thanks in advance and keep up the good work.
Use heat to get it to let go. From there you can separate it in the vice.
great video thanks I just went through this with 09 Forrester I used spary carburetor and throttle body cleaner didn't even need a new one
Nice tutorial Brian.Would a failed pvc valve blow the seal on the oil seperator plate?
@texcali85 Of course it's possible. I don't know for sure. I wish I could tell you.
Hi just being helpful you should specify the year on this video, it is only in that location for up to 99 models, 2000 and up its on the block, the peice on the intake is just a straight tube :)
Hey Brian I own a 2002 Subaru Legacy and I wanted to know your thoughts about my problem. My car recently has had sluggish take-offs and sometimes at low rpm (seems to be occuring more often now) starts to jerk and act like it is not getting fuel or losing fuel pressure what do you suggest? I recently changed the plugs and the fuel filter thanks to your videos. any help you could give would be much appreciated.
@TheItsdima You're welcome
2011 Forester manual says to use red Three Bond, the equivalent of Permatex red thread bond. No way. Sounds like a good way to really cause a problem for future removal. High temperature silicone seal is a better recommendation.
Briansmobile/ thanks for the reply and the video. Its a shame how complicated engineers make theses newer cars....
Brian, show how to change out the engine air filter, please. My 2001 forester is hard to get the housing apart to even get the old filter out.
awesome vid man, love your work. will be doing this as a quickie project while having a beer for my 04 forester xt this weekend. just hoping its all in the same place as your vid. cheers.
@R3dR1ot366 Sounds like either a contaminated Mass Air Flow Sensor or a failing ignition coil.
Excellent video Brian. Have you ever worked on any Alfa Romeos? My 79 spider is a completely different ball game from any vehicle I've worked on. Odd vehicles!
absolute handy vid thanks my 15 yr old teenager said it was spot on👍🎸
Thanks for the how-to, got mine swapped out on my 98 Forester.
Hi i have question to You. I have problem with my PCV . I can't screw out this from my EJ251 .It's spinning. I stoped my job, becouse i was affraid about crushed pieces of PCV ,falling in to my engine. Do you know how i can screw out this PCV(pry little bit) ,very carefuly, and safe for my engine?
Brian, could the bad/dirty PCV cause a P0026 code? I have a 2005 Subaru Outback 3.0R with 173K miles. The check engine light came on yesterday, then 5 minutes later, the cruise control light came on, and now blinks. I cleared the code, but it came back today. Please let me know what you think. Great videos! Thanks.
I'm not sure if the PCV could trigger that code, but you can grab a PCV valve for under $10 from ebay and swap it out in around 10 minutes. Even if it's completely unrelated to your problem, it's a good idea to do.
I have the same problem, only I did not have this problem before I installed new pcv valve today. How did you fix it?
S L If you have the problem after the install, then you need to go back and verify the repair. Some aftermarket PCV under perform. Ericthecarguy won't install non Honda PCVs for example because they don't do the function right. Most people I've talked to have been fine with a cheap PCV, but maybe your car is an exception like Eric's experience with Honda. The other video I saw with an issue after a PCV install was because the owner didn't resecure the rubber hose. The problem was a vacuum leak. when the P in PCV or positive pressure isn't happening, it pulls vacuum on that same hose, so if it's not attached you'll have vacuum leak symptoms.Much higher LTFT at higher RPM will develop. It will nearly correct at lower RPM.
DE Nichols thsnk you fr your input. I have solved my problem by resetting ECU unit. Works just fine now.
Sometimes cars won't unlearn "the fix" or the compensation they're doing for what's wrong after it's fixed. Thank you for your input. My car want acting fixed after the last fix either until reset.
Fixed the shake I had at idle, and I'll have to check if it fixed my oil in the air intake tomorrow. Nice.
So many cars I've seen oil on air filters! Simple answers like this are the best. I think I'll be fixing this problem on my car and probably six others that come to mind. Family and friends, lol.
I'm not having any issues but have 180k miles on the car, burning 1qt every 5000. Worth replacing the valve since it's cheap?
Where is the Purge Control Solenoid on 1999 Subaru Outback. Is it under intake manifold?
Thanks for the vid, good stuff
Man I have a 2008 Impreza 2.5i. Even though I have the Service Manual, I can't for the love of god find a TORQUE SPEC for the PCV valve anywhere... Do you know the spec ?
@porsche558 Thanks for your kind words. Good luck!
so its right up there easy to get to on 2018 Legacy 2.5L ?
@briansmobile1 Hey Brians, I hope u can help me.
So when it's removed next time, there is no risk of the teflon breaking up and little bits falling in?
I have a question about the PCV valve system on a 2002 Saab 9-5, I found the actual part that goes into the valve cover but even new, its hollow. Is it possible that Saab makes an in line pcv valve?
If I was going to - I missed the boat today. I just put it all back together today. Sorry man. Bit too late.
Hi Brian just changed my pvc valve THANK YOU for the video GOD BLESS
@taza11659 You're most welcome!
Awesome video! Thanks for all these videos. I hope i can bother you with a question as i am sure many others do. A friend has a 95 impreza wagon that i am thinking of buying. It is very slow from the take off but when it gets up some rpms it runs great and speedy. (195,000 miles) It throws a knock sensor and EGR and cat converter. Do you think it is easy to fix the slow problem and is the car worth 1500ish?
The body is pretty good and interior is good enough.
Thanks again and i subbed :)
@chichobelo22 You're welcome- glad you thought so.
I own a 2009 impreza. Will it be located in the same place?
I took mine off but its just open you can see true there its other one down where that one connects but i cant take the tuba hose out
@ShoeManShoe68 I had a Catalytic Converter Code and a Knock Sensor code and replacing the Knock Sensor cleared both. The Catalytic Converter threw a code first P0420, the knock sensor showed up later P0325. I was really surprised how much better the car ran. This was on a 2000 Impreza 2.5rs (175k miles).
I think I would replace the Knock Sensor($80-130), PCV valve($2-10), and Front O2 sensor(~$150) on any used Subaru I pick up. As of now I've replaced all three and the car is running well.
Brendan Geiger I replaced my whole cat. Gears and everything improved to a magical level. Over the moon about it.
is this the same for a 2013 Subaru? My oil light keeps coming on and I hope the engine isn't burning it.
Hey this is a great video showing the process. Now when I was replacing my PCV valve the hose that connects to the other side broke(not the side with the PCV) but the one that goes into the intake lower on the engine. Do you know what that could be called and where I could get it. Thanks
Order a replacement vacum hose. If you want the specific OEM Subaru hose, the part number is 99071AD250 (for a 2008-2015 Impreza 2.5i). Just order it from Partsouq for 15$.
Thank you for this very articulate, detailed instruction!!
@Boasandpythons I have worked on a couple of them. They do things a bit different. It takes patience, but they're reasonable enough.
What is torque spec when tighting pvc value?
My Valve does Rattle, is a little bit dirty.
I have a Problem with Oil-Consumption. Should i change it?
@oreno11 I don't know man.
Thanks for information, specially the fact is a 19 mm Deep Socket. I will try using a regular open ended 19mm (I don't have the money for the other one). One advice (from experience: do not use your hand's palm to force like you showed. I developed (in both hands) the Duprei syndrome (Google it) and had to be surgically operated. Again, it would be nice to know - before the repair - the inner diameter of that hose, so it can be replaced with a larger one (to make for the right loop, without chocking it), but much cheaper than the Subaru's original one. Thanks, again.
Is dope tape rated to take the engine temp?
My 03 legacy L wagon 2.5 its been a little bit lazy on throttle response i change the saprk plug, spark plugs wires, ignition coil, o2 sensor bank 1 and still running a little bit lazy any help please?
I'm happy to do one.... when the opportunity comes.
The jdm ej205 on my 2004 wrx doesnt have PCV , is there a different thing i should maintain and service instead of PCV?
Im having trouble wording my question so im sorry about that.
Hey kkjellquist, can you give me a list of the parts you are doing for the tune up? Need to do the same on my 02 Legacy. Thanks.
Just replaced mine. Estimated 25ftlbs for torque since I couldn't find it online.
i know what you mean but your not that boring to watch,ha ha ,i quite injoy it but yesterday was a drag, out looking for a new ride cus my knee was busted almost 2 years ago and cant walk far ,so got a 93 peugeot cheap and hope it holds a while
Hi Brian, your videos are awesome. Brian I have a 2002 Subaru Forester, all of a sudden it idle rough, RPM from 1000 to 500, if I rev it hard then no problem but at low idle it looses power, shake etc. I cleaned the ISC, no changes. Any suggestion ?
Thanks
same thing. I have a 2005 outback and when I am coming to a stop it will sometimes shake as you said and then stall out, turning off the power steering. It is very dangerous and annoying. After the car warms up though, possibly from a hard rev, the problem stops. It also happens more in the winter...
What was it?
@@rhettpawlowski753 yea what was it? Your describing my problem exactly!
@@UnKnownrider720 changed coil pack and that helped a little. I’m on my 2nd 2005 Outback. My first one was a manual and my current one is automatic. The manual never got fixed. The automatic is not perfect, but coil pack helped quite a bit
@@UnKnownrider720 i also might have changed the fuel injector in the manual.
Nice way to change the PCV valve on subaru.
car help AND karate advice! great video as always!
hi, i have jeep liberty 2005 , how can i do that , i can not find it . can you tell me where it locate . thanks in advance
thanx! for video! Very helpful but still have check engine light on, i tough it was because PCV.
Hey, got legacy 4/1994 without tachometer, so problem is were i can find rpm signal? So is there any possible for it? Usually blue wire? Were can find it.. tryed in ignition coil wires but showed in idle rpm like 3 000 rpm
hi brian, I have a impreza wrx ej20k i was hopeing you might be able to help me out im having terrible idle problems as in my car wants to die, also it smokes on startup for a few seconds and goes away, and i get a bit of smoke blow out of my b.o.v and I found oil in my intercooler and my air filter, intake any help would be great, i took out the iacv while engine was warm and it stayed open so i think thats buggered just the oil/smoke issue i dont know about. oh and there is no water in my oil.
Hi just need to know where is located the pcv valve on a Subaru b9 tribeca
