- On this day in 1955, Hollywood megastar Julie Andrews gave an interview to ITN's Lynne Reid Banks. Having just returned from the US, Andrews was impressed with American commercial programming, and expressed an interest in seeing how the advent of commercial television in Britain would compare.

That’s quite remarkable. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen her so young.
Whilst Julie Andrews became a successful actress, ITN’s Lynne Reid-Banks became a rather successful writer and ended up with one of her books “The L Shaped Room” being turned into a film. Not bad for both of them!
There is a bit of history lesson here too...apparently commercials were not a thing in the UK in 1955. Interesting! She is always so sweet and a wealth of knowledge
Commercial television (ITV - independent) started long after the BBC (which started in fits and starts, for television anyway, during the 1930s, then stopped for the war lest the main transmitter be used as a homing beacon for enemy bombers). ITN - independent television news - who did this interview, were the news part of ITV. I'm sure Wikipedia has plenty about it - or UA-cam for that matter; search for ITV UK and similar.
