I stood watching him for over 30mins on the practice ground at the 1984 Open before he went out for his 3rd round. I've never seen anyone who could consistently hit the ball so low since and what's more he was talking to the watching fans all the way through his routine. What a man.

Lee had a great line once. "I won two British Opens and what I was paid was pitiful and then I had expenses to get there. I lost money. If I had won any more British Opens, I would have gone bankrupt."

Hmm that’s odd thing to say though, especially as he only missed one open in a near 20 year span. Meaning he was already in Britain playing, and only won it twice. Perhaps he means playing it earlier in his career but after he won the US open in 68 and thus was a top contender and qualified to play the Open he almost always flew over and played it.

That is against the conventional wisdom - drive for show, putt for dough. It makes sense.

A good day driving sets the table for a great round, so I can see the importance of that.. But if you're not making some putts you won't beat anybody good. or enjoy your round much. Getting the first-pitch strike gives a pitcher a solid statistical and mental edge, but if he grooves a belt-high fastball or hangs a curve when he's ahead in the count, it's still gonna get whacked.
